Abstract:Brown constructed a series of threefold flips given by the GIT quotient of a hypersurface in C5. In this article, we classify threefold flips and flops which are the GIT quotients of complete intersections in C6. We also show that there are no more new examples as GIT quotients of complete intersections in Cn with n >= 7.

Abstract:We study flops of Calabi-Yau threefolds realised as Kaehler-favourable complete intersections in products of projective spaces (CICYs) and identify two different types. The existence and the type of the flops can be recognised from the configuration matrix of the CICY, which also allows for constructing such examples. The first type corresponds to rows containing only 1s and 0s, while the second type corresponds to rows containing a single entry of 2, followed by 1s and 0s. We give explicit descriptions for the manifolds obtained after the flop and show that the second type of flop always leads to isomorphic manifolds, while the first type in general leads to non-isomorphic flops. The singular manifolds involved in the flops are determinantal varieties in the first case and more complicated in the second case. We also discuss manifolds admitting an infinite chain of flops and show how to identify these from the configuration matrix. Finally, we point out how to construct the divisor images and Picard group isomorphisms under both types of flops.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct and classify a new family of flips, called generalized Grassmannian flips, by generalizing the construction of standard flips for $\mathbb{P}^m\times \mathbb{P}^n$ to any generalized Grassmannian $G/P$, where $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup of a complex semi-simple algebraic group. In addition, we show that a 9-fold generalized Grassmannian flip for $Sp(6, \mathbb{C})$ satisfies the DK flip conjecture by Bondal-Orlov and Kawamata via mutation techniques by Kuznetsov and Thomas' chess game method.

Abstract:We shall investigate a flipping contraction g : X -> Y from a 4-fold X with at most isolated complete intersection singularities. If Y has an anti-bi-canonical divisor (=bi-elephant) with only rational singularities, then g carries an inductive structure chained up by blow-ups (La Torre Pendente), and in particular the flip exists. This naturally contains Miles Reid's `Pagoda' as an anti-canonical divisor (=elephant) and its proper transforms.

Abstract:This is a revised version of my paper which appeared in J. Math. Sci. Univ. Tokyo. We prove that for a flipping contraction from a Gorenstein terminal 4-fold, the pull back of a general hyperplane section of the down-stair has only canonical singularities. Based on this fact and using Siu-Kawamata-Nakayama's extension theorem [Si], [Kaw4], [Kaw5] and [Nak2], we prove the existence of the flip of such a flipping contraction. Furthermore we classify such flipping contractions and the flips under some additional assumptions.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of homological flips and homological flops. The former includes the class of all flips between Gorenstein normal varieties; while the latter includes the class of all flops between Cohen-Macaulay normal varieties whose contracted variety is quasi-Gorenstein. Our main theorem shows that certain local cohomology complexes are dual to each other under homological flips/flops. We give some preliminary applications of this duality to relate the derived categories under flip/flop. Further applications are in [Yeu20b].

Abstract:Recently Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman showed that for any finite subgroup G of SO(4) there exists a contractible 4-manifold with an effective G-action on its boundary so that the twists associated to the non-trivial elements of G do not extend to diffeomorphisms of the entire manifold. We use a Heegaard Floer theoretic argument originating in work of Akbulut-Karakurt to give a different proof of this phenomenon.

Abstract:Using pagoda flop transitions between smooth projective threefolds, a relation is derived between the Euler numbers of moduli spaces of stable pairs which are scheme-theoretically supported on a fixed singular space curve and Euler numbers of Flag Hilbert schemes associated to a plane curve singularity. When the space curve singularity is locally complete intersection, one obtains a relation between the latter and Euler numbers of Hilbert schemes of the space curve singularity. It is also shown that this relation yields explicit results for a class of torus-invariant locally complete intersection singularities.

GIT Constructions of Compactified Universal Jacobians over Stacks of Stable Maps

Abstract:We prove that any compactified universal Jacobian over any stack of stable maps, defined using torsion-free sheaves which are Gieseker semistable with respect to a relatively ample invertible sheaf over the universal curve, admits a projective good moduli space which can be constructed using GIT, and that the same is true for analogues parametrising semistable sheaves of higher rank. We also prove that for different choices of invertible sheaves, the corresponding good moduli spaces are related by a finite number of "Thaddeus flips". As a special case of our methods, we provide a new GIT construction of the universal Picard variety of Caporaso and Pandharipande.

Abstract:We prove the crepant transformation conjecture for relative Grassmann flops over a smooth base $B$. We show that the $I$-functions of the respective GIT quotients are related by analytic continuation and a symplectic transformation. We verify that the symplectic transformation is compatible with Iritani's integral structure, that is, that it is induced by a Fourier-Mukai transform in $K$-theory.

Abstract:We prove that for any two minimal models of an lc algebraically integrable foliated triple on potentially klt varieties, there exist small birational models that are connected by a sequence of flops. In particular, any two minimal models of lc algebraically integrable foliated triples on $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt varieties are connected by a sequence of flops. We also discuss the connection between minimal models for possibly non-algebraically integrable foliations on threefolds, assuming the minimal model program for generalized foliated quadruples.

Abstract:We prove that every simple flop of type $D_5$, i.e. resolved by blowups with exceptional divisor isomorphic to a generalized Grassmann bundle with fiber $OG(4, 10)$, induces a derived equivalence. This provides new evidence for the DK conjecture of Bondal--Orlov and Kawamata. The proof is based on a sequence of mutations of exceptional objects: we use the same argument to prove derived equivalence for some pairs of non birational Calabi--Yau fivefolds in $OG(5, 10)$, related to Manivel's double--spinor Calabi--Yau varieties. We extend the construction to prove derived equivalence of Calabi--Yau fibrations which are described as zero loci in some generalized Grassmann bundles.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the linear quotient singularity for the exceptional subgroup G in Sp(4,C) of order 32 is isomorphic to an affine quiver variety for a 5-pointed star-shaped quiver. This allows us to construct uniformly all 81 projective crepant resolutions of the quotient singularity C4/G as hyperpolygon spaces by variation of GIT quotient, and we describe both the movable cone and the Namikawa Weyl group action via an explicit hyperplane arrangement. More generally, for the n-pointed star shaped quiver, we describe completely the birational geometry for the corresponding hyperpolygon spaces in dimension 2n - 6; for example, we show that there are 1684 projective crepant resolutions when n = 6. We also prove that the resulting affine cones are not quotient singularities for n >= 6.

Components of domino tilings under flips in quadriculated tori

Abstract:In a region R consisting of unit squares, a (domino) tiling is a collection of dominoes (the union of two adjacent squares) which pave fully the region. The flip graph of R is defined on the set of all tilings of R where two tilings are adjacent if we change one from the other by a flip (a 90-degree rotation of a pair of side-by-side dominoes). If R is simply-connected, then its flip graph is connected. By using homology and cohomology, Saldanha, Tomei, Casarin and Romualdo obtained a criterion to decide if two tilings are in the same component of flip graph of quadriculated surface. By a graph-theoretic method, we obtain that the flip graph of a non-bipartite quadriculated torus consists of two isomorphic components. As an application, we obtain that the forcing numbers of all perfect matchings of each non-bipartite quadriculated torus form an integer-interval. For a bipartite quadriculated torus, the components of the flip graph is more complicated, and we use homology to obtain a general lower bound for the number of components of its flip graph.

Abstract:Flip graphs of combinatorial and geometric objects are at the heart of many deep structural insights and connections between different branches of discrete mathematics and computer science. They also provide a natural framework for the study of reconfiguration problems. We study flip graphs of arrangements of pseudolines and of arrangements of pseudocircles, which are combinatorial generalizations of lines and circles, respectively. In both cases we consider triangle flips as local transformation and prove conjectures regarding their connectivity. In the case of $n$ pseudolines we show that the connectivity of the flip graph equals its minimum degree, which is exactly $n-2$. For the proof we introduce the class of shellable line arrangements, which serve as reference objects for the construction of disjoint paths. In fact, shellable arrangements are elements of a flip graph of line arrangements which are vertices of a polytope (Felsner and Ziegler; DM 241 (2001), 301--312). This polytope forms a cluster of good connectivity in the flip graph of pseudolines. In the case of pseudocircles we show that triangle flips induce a connected flip graph on \emph{intersecting} arrangements and also on cylindrical intersecting arrangements. The result for cylindrical arrangements is used in the proof for intersecting arrangements. We also show that in both settings the diameter of the flip graph is in $\Theta(n^3)$. Our constructions make essential use of variants of the sweeping lemma for pseudocircle arrangements (Snoeyink and Hershberger; Proc.\ SoCG 1989: 354--363). We finally study cylindrical arrangements in their own right and provide new combinatorial characterizations of this class.
