Abstract:Optical systems benefit from the use of aspheric surfaces because aspherics provide additional degrees of freedom for aberration control, yielding higher performance while reducing system weight and complexity. But optical designers always avoid to use aspheres with larger asphericity in optical systems mainly for the reason that the test of the steep aspherics requires extraordinary skill of the experimenter and the technical means to reduce the asphericity of the wavefronts that detected by the digital camera. Even though null optics can be adopted to compensate the asphericity of the test wavefront, they are not suitable for many cases. Each aspheric surface requires a unique null optics, which greatly increases a project's complexity, cost and time delay. In this paper, a type of novel lens with large longitude aberration and simple structure is proposed to reduce the asphericity of the wavefronts. The characteristic and the design process of the simple lens are discussed in detail. A comparison between the simple lens and the aplanat with different focus setting is given. Computer simulation shows the simple lens has much more power in reducing asphericity.
Design of a Panoramic Annular Lens with a Horizontal Symmetric FOV

Abstract:A new improved design method of the panoramic annular lens (PAL) with aspheric surfaces is introduced. The structure is not only helpful to enlarge the field of view (FOV) of the system, but also help to make a horizontal symmetric field of view. The field of view reaches (-30 degrees-+30 degrees) x 360 degrees and was distortion controlled to reduce blind zone in the center. The field of view and distortion of PAL was investigated theoretically and method of aspheric surface design was also discussed. An aspheric PAL and its relay lens group were designed. The total length was 20.4mm, and the focal length was 0.3mm. To get bright and clear image, the aperture of the system was set to f/2.88, and the diameter was 16.6mm. The spectral range was from 0.486 similar to 0.656um. The relay lens group was consisted of 8 pieces of lenses, with a back focal length (BFL) of 2mm. MTF below 70 lp/mm of the system is above 0.5. The result shows that the aberrations are corrected well.

Abstract:Star tracker is a high-accuracy attitude determination device widely used in spacecraft. A traditional star tracker obtain the attitude angle by calculating the centroids of star spots on photo detector. However, the directional accuracy is limited to arc-second level. In this paper, we introduce an interferometric star tracker. The interferometric star tracker improve the attitude accuracy by using interferometric components, the interference components consist of two identical gratings and several wedge plates. Tiny change of incident angle can be sensed by detecting the relative intensity of spots divided by the wedge plates. Optical design and accuracy analysis of interferometric star tracker were illustrated in this paper. The theoretical analysis indicates that accuracy of interferometric star tracker depend on the grating distance, grating period and gray level. In the laboratory experiment, the results show that that the relationship between the light intensity of each spot and incident angle can be expressed as a sinusoidal function, and the gray level difference of each spot can reach 1500, which means the accuracy can reach 0.2 " or even higher.
Geometrical and physical optics analysis for mm-wavelength refractor telescopes designed to map the cosmic microwave background

Abstract:We present a compact two-lens HDPE f/1.6 refractor design that is capable of supporting a 28-deg diffraction-limited field of view at 1-mm wavelengths and contrast it to a similar two-lens refractor using silicon lenses. We compare the optical properties of these two systems as predicted by both geometrical and physical optics. The presented analysis suggests that by relaxing telecentricity requirements, a plastic two-lens refractor system can perform comparably to a similar silicon system across a wide field of view and wavelengths up to 1 mm. We show that for both telescope designs, cold stop spillover changes significantly across the field of view in a way that is somewhat inconsistent with Gaussian beam formalism and simple f-number scaling. We present results that highlight beam ellipticity dependence on both pixel location and pixel aperture size --- an effect that is challenging to reproduce in standard geometrical optics. We show that a silicon refractor design suffers from larger cross-polarization compared to the HDPE design. Our results address the limitations of solely relying on geometrical optics to assess relative performance of two optical systems. We discuss implications for future refractor designs.

Abstract:High throughput optical system is defined to possess the features of both large field of view (FOV) and high resolution. However, it is full of challenge to design such a telescope with the two conflicting specifications at the same time. In this paper, we propose a method to design a high throughput telescope based on the classical off-axis Three-Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) configuration by introducing a scanning mechanism. We derive the optimum initial design for the TMA system with no primary aberrations through characteristic ray tracing. During the design process, a real exit pupil is necessitated to accommodate the scanning mirror. By gradually increasing the system's FOV during the optimization procedure, we finally obtained a high throughput telescope design with an F-number of 6, a FOV of 60$^{\circ}$*1.5$^{\circ}$, and a long focal length of 876mm. In addition, the tolerance analysis is also conducted to demonstrate the instrumentation feasibility. We believe that this kind of large rectangle FOV telescope with high resolution has broad future applications in the optical remote sensing field.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the optics design for a 3 x 3 millimeter-wave focal plane array for the Delingha 13.7-m telescope. Three optical schemes, such as that with relay optics consisting of focusing mirrors or lenses, or that without relay optics, have been evaluated using ZEMAX, with a comparison to that from GRASP9. The conclusion drawn from the two software tools agree well with each other.

Abstract:The linear astigmatism balance condition of the off-axis three-mirror optical system was deduced, on that base the off-axis three-mirror reflective system for astigmatism correction with large relative aperture and large field of view was proposed by tilting the optical axis. The field of view is 5 degrees X 5 degrees, relative aperture is 1/3.1, entrance pupil diameter is 250 mm and spectral range is 400 similar to 2 500 nm. The proposed system was compared with the off-axis three-mirror reflective system of coaxial quadratic aspheric surface and the off-axis three-mirror reflective system of coaxial high-order even aspheric surface with the same optical parameters. The results show that the optical transfer function of off-axis three mirror reflective system with tilted optical axis is greater than 0.73 at 17 1p/mm in all field of view. It uses conical surfaces and shows obvious advantages in imaging quality. In addition, the processing and adjustment of off-axis three-mirror reflective system with tilted optical axis are analyzed, the tolerance is relatively loose and the structure can be realized.

Abstract:This paper presents a distortion correction method for designing a wide field of view (FOV) lens for an imaging system. The lens is composed of two aspheric surfaces and several spheres. In the preliminary design, profiles of the aspheric surfaces can be obtained according to aplanatism, refraction law, and polynomial fitting methods, where the numeric computation, the differential geometry computation, and the polynomial fitting algorithm are stated in detail. Then the lens is optimized by the damped least squares method. Theoretically, this method cannot eliminate aberrations absolutely but can balance some kinds of aberrations to the image well. Furthermore, a projector lens with a wide FOV, low distortion, and low throw ratio [TR = (projection distance)/(image diagonal size)] is designed successfully by this method.

Abstract:We report on the design of an off-axis three-mirror freeform telescope with a large field of view (FOV) based on an integration mirror (IM). This design is the continuation of the authors' previous work. Based on aberration theory, we established a suitable nonrelayed three-mirror-anastigmat initial configuration for integration mirror design. For an optical freeform surface, we analyzed the qualitative aberration correction ability of a x-y polynomial surface that can provide a simple, convenient, and user-friendly relationship between freeform surface term coefficients and aberrations and then applied the x-y polynomial surface on the tertiary mirror to improve the system optimization degrees of freedom. In an example with a focal length of 1200 mm, an F-number of 12, and a FOV of 1°×30°, the tolerance performance was analyzed, and the system presented a good imaging performance. In addition, the IM structure and opto-mechanics support structure were designed and analyzed. The confirmatory design results showed that the integration of the primary mirror and tertiary mirror can improve opto-mechanical properties judged by multiple criteria. In conclusion, the integration of the primary mirror and tertiary mirror not only offers alignment convenience as described previously but also improves system opto-mechanical properties in multiple perspectives. We believe this large linear FOV system based on IM has broad future applications in the optical remote sensing field.

Abstract:A four-mirror Nasmyth-focus configuration with a 3-min of arc field of diffraction-limited imagery has been developed utilizing an f/0.6 spherical-primary mirror. Limitations were found when a traditional polynomial was used to describe the aspheric surfaces. To get the desired imagery, eleven aspheric terms were necessary. Exponential series were explored, but they gave no significant improvement.

Abstract:In this paper, a construction method through forward and reverse ray tracing for a design of ultra-wide linear field-of-view (FOV) off-axis freeform systems is proposed. The freeform initial system is numerically constructed by a point-by-point calculation. This method begins with a spherical system solved by the paraxial optical theory. In this method, the primary mirror is calculated through the reverse ray tracing; hence, the size and position of the aperture stop is not affected by the changes of mirrors. The fields in the reverse system are selected to cause certain beam overlaps on the primary mirror between adjacent fields. These overlaps offer a more uniform distribution of data points, improving the calculation of this mirror. As an example, an off-axis freeform system with an ultra-wide linear field-of-view of 70 degrees is designed by this method. The effective focal length of the system is 75 mm, and the F-number is 5.8. The diffraction-limited performance of this freeform system in the visible band and the near infrared and near ultraviolet bands validate the construction method presented in this paper.
Panopticon: a telescope for our times

Abstract:We present a design for a wide-field spectroscopic telescope. The only large powered mirror is spherical, the resulting spherical aberration is corrected for each target separately, giving exceptional image quality. The telescope is a transit design, but still allows all-sky coverage. Three simultaneous modes are proposed: (a) natural seeing multi-object spectroscopy with 12m aperture over 3dg FoV with ~25,000 targets; (b) multi-object AO with 12m aperture over 3dg FoV with ~100 AO-corrected Integral Field Units each with 4 arcsec FoV; (c) ground layer AO-corrected integral field spectroscopy with 15m aperture and 13 arcmin FoV. Such a telescope would be uniquely powerful for large-area follow-up of imaging surveys; in each mode, the AOmega and survey speed exceed all existing facilities combined. The expected cost of this design is relatively modest, much closer to $500M than $1000M.

Abstract:Large-aperture ground-based astronomical telescopes are expected to have a large field of view (FoV) and a wide working wave band. We design two coaxial reflective telescopes based on a low-order even asphere and a high-order Q-con polynomial. Both telescopes have a primary mirror with a diameter of 6.5 m, a focal length of 24 m, and a working wavelength that stretches from ultraviolet to near-infrared (0.365-2.4 µm). The telescopes using an asphere and a Q-con polynomial have spectroscopic-survey fields of 3° and 3.4°, respectively. In these fields, the EE80D (diameter of 80%-enclosed light energy) values that can characterize the telescope image quality is less than 0.58'', and the spectral data can be obtained using fibers at the focal surface of the telescopes. Additionally, the two reflective telescopes can image celestial targets in a 0.4° FoV, and the root mean square diameters of the standard spot diagrams are less than 27 µm. By combining precise imaging measurements with the spectral data, the properties of celestial bodies can be better analyzed. The designed telescopes could enable the realization of astronomical spectroscopic surveys with both a large FoV and a wide waveband.

Abstract:This paper described an off-axis five-mirror-anastigmatic telescope. It is composed of three aspheric surfaces and one spherical surface while the third mirror and fifth mirror have the same parameters at the same place. This configuration is useful for having wide field of view. The strip full field of view for the near infrared telescope is 20 degrees x0.2 degrees. The entrance pupil is located in front of the first mirror. There is an intermediate image between the second mirror and the third mirror. The entrance pupil diameter is 100 mm and the effective focal length is 250 mm. The spectral range is 0.85 -1.75 mu m. The pixel pitch is 15 mu m. The image quality is near the diffraction limit. Some methods were used to restrain the stray light such as a field stop near the intermediate image, the baffle, the narrow-band pass filter and a stop in front of the focal plane.

Abstract:In this paper, a low F-number freeform off-axis three-mirror system with rectangular field-of-view (FOV) is presented, and the system has an integrated configuration that can be aligned with ordinary methods. The initial structure is solved analytically, and the optimization process is described in detail. This F/1.38 freeform system with a 4 degrees x 5 degrees FOV provides good imaging performance, especially in middle-wave and long-wave infrared bands. The primary mirror and the tertiary mirror are approximately tangent, so these two freeform mirrors can be fabricated on a single substrate. This configuration provides a solution to the practical application of freeform off-axis three-mirror systems. Additionally, a prototype of this system is demonstrated, and the imaging performance of the prototype is tested experimentally. The actual performance of the prototype is discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:We present a practical wide-field optical design for a 60 m aperture submillimeter telescope, which is currently under conceptual design study in China. The telescope is specified to operate over a wavelength range of 0.65-3 mm and provide a wide field of view (FOV) of 1° in diameter. We designed an F/6 Ritchey Chrétien (RC) system with a quasi-planar tertiary corrector, which cancels all spherical, coma, and astigmatism aberrations. It also achieves a good balance among the mirror sizes, central obscuration, and focal-plane curvature. The problems of focal surface curvature and nontelecentricity are treated in the subfield instrumental design, which employs a simple silicon wedge prism to obtain flat and telecentric focal planes for each subfield instrument module. Our studies show that by such a design, more than ${{10}^5}$105 detector pixels can be efficiently and uniformly fed at the shortest wavelength band with Strehl ratios above 0.85 across the entire 1° FOV. Several practical issues related to the telescope optics are also discussed.

Abstract:We compare coronagraph concepts and investigate their behavior and suitability for planet finder projects with Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs, 30-42 meters class telescopes). For this task, we analyze the impact of major error sources that occur in a coronagraphic telescope (central obscuration, secondary support, low-order segment aberrations, segment reflectivity variations, pointing errors) for phase, amplitude and interferometric type coronagraphs. This analysis is performed at two different levels of the detection process: under residual phase left uncorrected by an eXtreme Adaptive Optics system (XAO) for a large range of Strehl ratio and after a general and simple model of speckle calibration, assuming common phase aberrations between the XAO and the coronagraph (static phase aberrations of the instrument) and non-common phase aberrations downstream of the coronagraph (differential aberrations provided by the calibration unit). We derive critical parameters that each concept will have to cope with by order of importance. We evidence three coronagraph categories as function of the accessible angular separation and proposed optimal one in each case. Most of the time amplitude concepts appear more favorable and specifically, the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph gathers the adequate characteristics to be a baseline design for ELTs.

Abstract:An off-axis four-mirror-anastigmatic telescope is presented here which is composed of two aspheric surfaces and two spherical surfaces. The entrance pupil diameter is 290 mm and the stop is located at the primary mirror. The effective focal length is 900 mm. The strip field of view for the telescope is 15 degrees x 0.2 degrees and if the telescope is launched into an orbit about 400 km altitude, the observed range width will be more than 105 km within a scene without any other auxiliary scanning instrument. The spectral range can be as wide as from visual wave band to infrared wave band in the mirror system. This telescope can be used for environmental monitoring with different detectors whose pixel is adapted to the optical resolution. In this paper, the spectral range is chosen as 3.0 -5.0 mu m, and center distance of the pixel is 30 mu m. And the image quality is near the diffraction limit.

Abstract:An off-axis optical design is proposed as a possible optical bench setup for the next generation gravity and geodesy mission. In place of the triple mirror assembly of the GRACE Follow on mission, a more compact, light weight new layout of an off-axis optical design which adopts an assembly of mirrors and lens systems is studied. The lens systems serve on one hand to achieve laser retro-reflection between two satellites and on the other hand, to optimize the receiving, local, and transmitting beam parameters. The receiving (RX) and transmitting (TX) beam are enforced to be anti-parallel by means of a control loop with the differential wavefront sensing (DWS) signals as controller. A simulation model is then built using IfoCAD to verify the feasibility of the optical design. Preliminary simulation results indicate that, with the proposed optical layout, the tilt to length coupling noises originated both locally and that from attitude jitter of spacecrafts are efficiently suppressed. Thermal stability of the optical bench is also briefly considered.

Abstract:We present the development of a compact f/7.3 (D=35 mm) three-mirror reflective telescope for the atmospheric-research microsatellite Mesospheric Airglow/Aerosol Tomography Spectroscopy (MATS). The telescope design was driven by the end users' need for a reflective wide-field (5.67°×0.91°) optic with high stray light rejection and six detection channels with separate image sensors, operating at wavelengths 270-772 nm. For the first time, a design method for wide-field off-axis telescopes-in which linear astigmatism is eliminated-was applied and tested in practice. Single-point diamond turning was used to produce two sets of 37-110 mm large free-form aluminum mirrors with surface figure errors and roughness values of 34-62 nm (RMS)/193-497 nm (PV) and 2.8-3.5 nm (RMS), respectively. A method that combines precise machining and geometry measurements (using a coordinate measuring machine) was employed to fabricate an aluminum structure to accurately position the mirrors without the need for manual alignment. The telescope was tested with a network of plate beamsplitters and filters, which define the spectral selection for the six detection channels. Imaging performance measurements were carried out using a reflective off-axis collimator, which projects imaging targets at infinite focus. A modulation transfer function (MTF) value of 0.45 at 20 lp/mm was measured at ∼760 nm (diffraction limit: 0.85) using a slanted edge target. By modeling the measured mirror surfaces in optical design software, a reoptimization of the mirror positions could be performed and an improved MTF of ∼0.75 at 20 lp/mm was predicted. The results demonstrate design- and building methods that can be utilized to make off-axis telescopes for a vast range of applications.
