Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of the theoretical and experimental progress in the investigation of novel high-temperature quantum chromodynamics phenomena in small systems at both the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with studying small systems, by which we generally mean collision systems that involve at least one light ion or even a photon projectile. We discuss perspectives on possible future research directions to better understand the underlying physics at work in the collisions of small systems.

Small $x$ Physics Beyond Eikonal Approximation: an Effective Hamiltonian Approach

Abstract:Understanding the spin structure of hadrons in the small $x$ regime is an important direction to unravel the spin puzzle in hadronic physics. To include spin degrees of freedom in the small $x$ regime requires going beyond the usual eikonal approximation in high energy QCD. We developed an effective Hamiltonian approach to study spin related observables in the small $x$ regime using the shockwave formalism. The small-$x$ effective Hamiltonian incorporates both quark and gluon propagators in the background fields and the background field induced interaction vertices up to next-to-eikonal order. A novel feature of sub-eikonal interactions is the background gluon field induced gluon radiation inside the shockwave. Its relation to chromo-electrically polarized Wilson line correlator is established both in small $x$ helicity evolution and in longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for gluon production.

Abstract:X-ray microscopy is a mature characterization tool routinely used to answer various questions of science, technology and engineering. The high penetration power of X-rays allows to utilize different characterization methods and reveal elemental composition, crystalline phases, strain distribution, oxidation states etc. in macroscopic and microscopic samples. To obtain comprehensive chemical and structural information at the nanometer scale an X-ray microscope must be equipped with adequate capabilities and allow acquisition of multiple datasets simultaneously. Full-field or scanning X-ray microscopes usually serve this purpose and complement each other. In the recent years, a number of X-ray microscopes have been designed, constructed and commissioned at NSLS-II. In this work we provide an overview of the microscopy instrumentation developments at NSLS-II. It includes the multilayer Laue Lens based nanoprobe optimized for 10 nm spatial resolution imaging, it’s current status and future upgrades; the zone plate based full-field imaging system capable of nano-tomography measurements in less than 1 minute; a laser scanning system optimized for ptychography measurements along with algorithms development, and a new Kirkpatrick-Baez based scanning microscope designed for sub-100 nm spatial resolution experiments.

Recent Developments of Small-$x$ Evolution for Quark and Gluon Helicity

Abstract:Helicity of quarks and gluons inside the proton at small Bjorken $x$ is one of the missing pieces of the proton spin puzzle, with limited experimental results due to various challenges. To address the problem, we derive under the framework of color glass condensate (CGC) effective theory a renormalization group equation in rapidity for the parton helicity distributions, which resums double-logarithmic factor, $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, with $\alpha_s$ being the strong coupling constant. With running coupling, the equation produces results at Bjorken $x\leq 0.1$ that are consistent with the world polarized scattering data. There is an evidence for a significant parton helicity contribution from the small-$x$ region. However, the helicity estimate still contains a large uncertainty that will dramatically reduce with the upcoming measurements from the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Ongoing attempts to reduce the uncertainty of our helicity prediction in the medium term will also be discussed.

Abstract:These are related, because the ideas involved in (1) form one of the main foundations for (2). More precisely, the proof of the Yau conjecture relies on an extension of the partial C estimate to metrics with conic singularities. Gang Tian has made claims to credit for these results. The purpose of this document is to rebut these claims on the grounds of originality, priority and correctness of the mathematical arguments. We acknowledge Tian’s many contributions to this field in the past and, partly for this reason, we have avoided raising our objections publicly over the last 15 months, but it seems now that this is the course we have to take in order to document the facts. In addition, this seems to us the responsible action to take and one we owe to our colleagues, especially those affected by these developments.

Abstract:In this proceeding, the xFitter project is presented. xFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution and fragmentation functions for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics. xFitter version 2.2.0 has recently been released and offers an expanded set of tools and options. xFitter has been used for a number of analyses performed recently. An emphasis is given on the recently published study performed by the xFitter Developers' team of the pion fragmentation functions.

Abstract:Deep-inelastic scattering at small x is a new field of QCD phenomenology which HERA experiments started to explore. The data show the feature expected by the perturbative Regge asymptotics. We describe the parton picture of structure function evolution both for increasing $Q^2$ and for decreasing $x$ and discuss the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD on which this picture is based. The steep rise of the parton density towards smaller $x$ gets saturated by parton recombination. An essential improvement of the leading logarithmic approximation has to be worked out in order to satisfy the unitarity conditions and in this way to describe the parton recombination in perturbative QCD. We review some ideas of the perturbative Regge asymptotics and some recent theoretical results about multi-reggeon exchange in QCD. Talk at the Tennessee Intern. Symposium on Rad. Abstract:The increase in luminosity, and consequent higher backgrounds, of the LHC upgrades require improved rejection of fake tracks in the forward region of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. The New Small Wheel upgrade of the Muon Spectrometer aims to reduce the large background of fake triggers from track segments that are not originated from the interaction point. The New Small Wheel employs two detector technologies, the resistive strip Micromegas detectors and the "small" Thin Gap Chambers, with a total of 2.45 Million electrodes to be sensed. The two technologies require the design of a complex electronics system given that it consists of two different detector technologies and is required to provide both precision readout and a fast trigger. It will operate in a high background radiation region up to about 20 kHz/cm$^{2}$ at the expected HL-LHC luminosity of $\mathcal{L}$=7.5$\times10^{34}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The architecture of the system is strongly defined by the GBTx data aggregation ASIC, the newly-introduced FELIX data router and the software based data handler of the ATLAS detector. The electronics complex of this new detector was designed and developed in the last ten years and consists of multiple radiation tolerant Application Specific Integrated Circuits, multiple front-end boards, dense boards with FPGA's and purpose-built Trigger Processor boards within the ATCA standard. The New Small Wheel has been installed in 2021 and is undergoing integration within ATLAS for LHC Run 3. It should operate through the end of Run 4 (December 2032). In this manuscript, the overall design of the New Small Wheel electronics is presented.

Abstract:We emphasize the importance of applying power counting to the small-xobservables, which introduces novel soft contributions usually missing andallows for a unified treatment of the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution andvarious Sudakov logarithms. We use pA → h(p_h⊥)X at forward rapidityto highlight how the power counting yields a partonic cross section withcollinear and soft sectors. We show how the kinematic constraints can beobtained in the soft sector without violating the power counting. We furthershow how one can resum the threshold Sudakov logarithms systematically to allorders in a re-factorized framework with additional collinear-softcontributions. Direct applications to other small-x processes involving heavyparticles, jet (sub-)observables and EIC physics are straightforward.

Abstract:Coherence phenomena, the increase with energy of coherence length and the non-universality of parton structure of the effective Pomeron are explained. New hard phenomena directly calculable in QCD such as diffractive electroproduction of states with $M^2\ll Q^2$ and the color transparency phenomenon as well as new options to measure the light-cone wave functions of various hadrons are considered. An analogue of Bjorken scaling is predicted for the diffractive electroproduction of $\rho$ mesons at large momentum transfers and for the production of large rapidity gap events, as observed at HERA. A phenomenological QCD evolution equation is suggested to calculate the basic characteristics of the large rapidity gap events. The increase of parton densities at small $x$ as well as new means to disentangle experimentally soft and hard physics are considered. We discuss constraints on the increase of deep inelastic amplitudes with $Q^2$ derived from the inconsistency of QCD predictions for inclusive and exclusive processes and from unitarity of the S matrix for collisions of wave packets. New ways to probe QCD physics of hard processes at large longitudinal distances and to answer the long standing problems on the origin of the Pomeron are suggested. Unresolved problems and perspectives of small $x$ physics are also outlined.

Low-$x$ physics at LHCb

Abstract:The LHCb detector's forward geometry provides unprecedented kinematic coverage at low Bjorken-$x$. LHCb's excellent momentum resolution, vertex reconstruction, and particle identification enable precision measurements at low transverse momentum and high rapidity in proton-lead collisions, probing $x$ as small as $10^{-6}$. In this contribution, we present recent studies of low-$x$ physics using the LHCb detector. These studies include charged hadron, neutral pion, and $D^0$ production in proton-lead collisions, as well as charmonium production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. Future prospects and implications for the understanding of low-$x$ nuclear PDFs and parton saturation are also discussed.

Abstract:New particles beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, such as axions, can be effectively searched through their interactions with electrons. We use the large liquid xenon detector PandaX-4T to search for novel electronic recoil signals induced by solar axions, neutrinos with anomalous magnetic moment, axion-like particles, dark photons, and light fermionic dark matter. A detailed background model is established with the latest datasets with 1.54 $\rm tonne \cdot year$ exposure. No significant excess above the background has been observed, and we have obtained competitive constraints for axion couplings, neutrino magnetic moment, and fermionic dark matter interactions.
