Abstract:We present an analytical parametrization of the QCD description of the small x behaviour of parton distribution functions in the leading twist approximation of the Wilson operator product expansion, in the case of soft initial conditions. Abstract:Coherence phenomena, the increase with energy of coherence length and the non-universality of parton structure of the effective Pomeron are explained. New hard phenomena directly calculable in QCD such as diffractive electroproduction of states with $M^2\ll Q^2$ and the color transparency phenomenon as well as new options to measure the light-cone wave functions of various hadrons are considered. An analogue of Bjorken scaling is predicted for the diffractive electroproduction of $\rho$ mesons at large momentum transfers and for the production of large rapidity gap events, as observed at HERA. A phenomenological QCD evolution equation is suggested to calculate the basic characteristics of the large rapidity gap events. The increase of parton densities at small $x$ as well as new means to disentangle experimentally soft and hard physics are considered. We discuss constraints on the increase of deep inelastic amplitudes with $Q^2$ derived from the inconsistency of QCD predictions for inclusive and exclusive processes and from unitarity of the S matrix for collisions of wave packets. New ways to probe QCD physics of hard processes at large longitudinal distances and to answer the long standing problems on the origin of the Pomeron are suggested. Unresolved problems and perspectives of small $x$ physics are also outlined.

Abstract:Deep-inelastic scattering at small x is a new field of QCD phenomenology which HERA experiments started to explore. The data show the feature expected by the perturbative Regge asymptotics. We describe the parton picture of structure function evolution both for increasing $Q^2$ and for decreasing $x$ and discuss the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD on which this picture is based. The steep rise of the parton density towards smaller $x$ gets saturated by parton recombination. An essential improvement of the leading logarithmic approximation has to be worked out in order to satisfy the unitarity conditions and in this way to describe the parton recombination in perturbative QCD. We review some ideas of the perturbative Regge asymptotics and some recent theoretical results about multi-reggeon exchange in QCD. Talk at the Tennessee Intern. Symposium on Rad. Abstract:We study the small- x evolution equation for the gluon generalized parton distribution Eg of the nucleon. It is shown that Eg at vanishing skewness exhibits the Regge behavior identical to the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov pomeron despite its association with nucleon helicity-flip processes. We also consider the effect of gluon saturation and demonstrate that Eg gets saturated in the same way as its helicity-nonflip counterpart Hg . Soft-gluon resummation effects on parton distributions

Abstract:We gauge the impact of soft-gluon resummation on quark distributions by performing a simple fit of Deep Inelastic Scattering structure function data using next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL)-resummed coefficient functions. We make use of NuTeV charged-current data, as well as New Muon Collaboration (NMC) and Bologna-CERN-Dubna-Munich-Saclay (BCDMS) neutral-current results, which probe large values of x. Our results suggest that the inclusion of resummation effects in global fits of parton distributions is both feasible and desirable, in order to achieve at large x the accuracy goals of the LHC physics program.

Recent Developments of Small-$x$ Evolution for Quark and Gluon Helicity

Abstract:Helicity of quarks and gluons inside the proton at small Bjorken $x$ is one of the missing pieces of the proton spin puzzle, with limited experimental results due to various challenges. To address the problem, we derive under the framework of color glass condensate (CGC) effective theory a renormalization group equation in rapidity for the parton helicity distributions, which resums double-logarithmic factor, $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, with $\alpha_s$ being the strong coupling constant. With running coupling, the equation produces results at Bjorken $x\leq 0.1$ that are consistent with the world polarized scattering data. There is an evidence for a significant parton helicity contribution from the small-$x$ region. However, the helicity estimate still contains a large uncertainty that will dramatically reduce with the upcoming measurements from the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Ongoing attempts to reduce the uncertainty of our helicity prediction in the medium term will also be discussed.

Abstract:Using the colour dipole approach of the QCD perturbative (BFKL) Pomeron exchange in onium-onium scattering, we compute the cross section for small but hierarchically different onium sizes. A specific term dependent on the size-ratio is generated. In deep inelastic onium scattering it appears as a scaling violation contribution to the quark structure function near the BFKL singularity. We find that the extension of the formalism for deep inelastic onium scattering to the proton structure function provides a remarkably good 3-parameter fit to HERA data at small x with a simple physical interpretation in terms of the dipole formulation.

Abstract:The behavior of the charm and bottom structure functions ($F_{k}^{i}(x,Q^{2})$, i=c,b; k=2,L) at small-$x$ is considered with respect to the hard-Pomeron and saturation models. Having checked that this behavior predicate the heavy flavor reduced cross sections concerning the unshadowed and shadowed corrections. We will show that the effective exponents for the unshadowed and saturation corrections are independent of $x$ and $Q^{2}$, and also the effective coefficients are dependent to $\ln{Q^{2}}$ compared to Donnachie-Landshoff (DL) and color dipole (CD) models.

Abstract:The Parton Branching (PB) method describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions, covering all kinematic regions from small to large transverse momenta kT. The small kT-region is very sensitive both to the contribution of the intrinsic motion of partons (intrinsic kT) and to the resummation of soft gluons taken into account by the PB TMD evolution equations. We study the role of soft-gluon emissions in TMD as well as integrated parton distributions. We perform a detailed investigation of the PB TMD methodology at next-to-leading order (NLO) in Drell-Yan (DY) production for low transverse momenta. We present the extraction of the nonperturbative "intrinsic-kT" distribution from recent measurements of DY transverse momentum distributions at the LHC across a wide range in DY masses, including a detailed treatment of statistical, correlated and uncorrelated uncertainties. We comment on the (in)dependence of intrinsic transverse momentum on DY mass and center-of-mass energy, and on the comparison with other approaches.

Abstract:The recently revised small-$x$ helicity evolution, resumming the double-logarithmic factor, $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken $x$, corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate-$x$ initial conditions in the regime, $\alpha_s \ln^2(1/x)\sim 1$, for the small-$x$ helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models. Consequently, the predictive power of small-$x$ helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated.

Abstract:We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. Initial-state and final-state effects on hadron production in small collision systems

Abstract:Heavy meson production in reactions with nuclei is an active new frontier to understand QCD dynamics and the process of hadronization in nuclear matter. Measurements in various colliding systems at RHIC and LHC, including Pb-Pb, Xe-Xe, O-O, p-Pb, and p-O, enable precision tests of the medium-size, temperature, and mass dependencies of the in-medium parton propagation and shower formation. We employ a coupled DGLAP evolution framework that takes advantage of splitting functions recently obtained in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons (SCET$_{\rm G}$) and hard thermal loop (HTL) motivated collisional energy loss effects. With jet quenching effects constrained to the nuclear modification factor of charged hadrons in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV, we present predictions for light and heavy-meson in Xe-Xe, O-O and p-Pb collisions at the LHC. We find that the nuclear modification scales non-trivially with the quark mass and medium properties. In particular, there can be sizeable collision-induced attenuation of heavy mesons in small systems such as oxygen-oxygen and high-multiplicity p-Pb events. Finally, we analyze the impact of different models of initial-state parton dynamics on the search for QGP signatures in small colliding systems.

Abstract:We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions at small-x in a consistent framework that takes into account the TMD evolution and small-x evolution simultaneously. The small-x evolution effects are included by computing the TMDs at appropriate scales in terms of the dipole scattering amplitudes, which obey the relevant Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. Meanwhile, the TMD evolution is obtained by resumming the Collins–Soper type large logarithms emerged from the calculations in small-x formalism into Sudakov factors.

Small $x$ Physics Beyond Eikonal Approximation: an Effective Hamiltonian Approach

Abstract:Understanding the spin structure of hadrons in the small $x$ regime is an important direction to unravel the spin puzzle in hadronic physics. To include spin degrees of freedom in the small $x$ regime requires going beyond the usual eikonal approximation in high energy QCD. We developed an effective Hamiltonian approach to study spin related observables in the small $x$ regime using the shockwave formalism. The small-$x$ effective Hamiltonian incorporates both quark and gluon propagators in the background fields and the background field induced interaction vertices up to next-to-eikonal order. A novel feature of sub-eikonal interactions is the background gluon field induced gluon radiation inside the shockwave. Its relation to chromo-electrically polarized Wilson line correlator is established both in small $x$ helicity evolution and in longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for gluon production.
