Abstract:Deep-inelastic scattering at small x is a new field of QCD phenomenology which HERA experiments started to explore. The data show the feature expected by the perturbative Regge asymptotics. We describe the parton picture of structure function evolution both for increasing $Q^2$ and for decreasing $x$ and discuss the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD on which this picture is based. The steep rise of the parton density towards smaller $x$ gets saturated by parton recombination. An essential improvement of the leading logarithmic approximation has to be worked out in order to satisfy the unitarity conditions and in this way to describe the parton recombination in perturbative QCD. We review some ideas of the perturbative Regge asymptotics and some recent theoretical results about multi-reggeon exchange in QCD. Talk at the Tennessee Intern. Symposium on Rad. Low-$x$ physics at LHCb

Abstract:The LHCb detector's forward geometry provides unprecedented kinematic coverage at low Bjorken-$x$. LHCb's excellent momentum resolution, vertex reconstruction, and particle identification enable precision measurements at low transverse momentum and high rapidity in proton-lead collisions, probing $x$ as small as $10^{-6}$. In this contribution, we present recent studies of low-$x$ physics using the LHCb detector. These studies include charged hadron, neutral pion, and $D^0$ production in proton-lead collisions, as well as charmonium production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. Future prospects and implications for the understanding of low-$x$ nuclear PDFs and parton saturation are also discussed.

Abstract:We show how the formulations of low x physics involving Wilson line operators can be fully rewritten into an infinite twist TMD or GTMD framework, respectively for inclusive and exclusive observables. This leads to a perfect match between low x physics and moderate x formulations of QCD in terms of GTMDs, TMDs, GPDs or PDFs. We derive the BFKL limit as a kinematic limit and argue that beyond the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, 3-body and 4-body unintegrated PFDs should be taken into account even in this regime. Finally we analyse how saturation should be understood as 3 distinct effects: saturation through non-linearities in the evolution equations at small x, saturation through multiple interactions with slow gluons as TMD gauge links, and saturation as the enhancement of genuine twist corrections.

Abstract:In a planetary or satellite system, idealized as n small bodies in initially coplanar, concentric orbits around a large central body, obeying Newtonian point-particle mechanics, resonant perturbations will cause dynamical evolution of the orbital radii except under highly specific mutual relationships, here derived analytically apparently for the first time. In particular, the most stable situation is achieved (in this idealized model) only when each planetary orbit is roughly twice as far from the Sun as the preceding one, as observed empirically already by Titius (1766) and Bode (1778) and used in both the discoveries of Uranus (1781) and the Asteroid Belt (1801). Abstract:Familiar factorized descriptions of classic QCD processes such as deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) apply in the limit of very large hard scales, much larger than nonperturbative mass scales and other nonperturbative physical properties like intrinsic transverse momentum. Since many interesting DIS studies occur at kinematic regions where the hard scale, $Q \sim$ 1-2 GeV, is not very much greater than the hadron masses involved, and the Bjorken scaling variable $x_{bj}$ is large, $x_{bj} \gtrsim 0.5$, it is important to examine the boundaries of the most basic factorization assumptions and assess whether improved starting points are needed. Using an idealized field-theoretic model that contains most of the essential elements that a factorization derivation must confront, we retrace the steps of factorization approximations and compare with calculations that keep all kinematics exact. We examine the relative importance of such quantities as the target mass, light quark masses, and intrinsic parton transverse momentum, and argue that a careful accounting of parton virtuality is essential for treating power corrections to collinear factorization. We use our observations to motivate searches for new or enhanced factorization theorems specifically designed to deal with moderately low-$Q$ and large-$x_{bj}$ physics.

Abstract:We revisit the high energy semi-classical description of the exclusive processes DVCS, TCS, and Double DVCS by explicitly keeping track of the Feynman x dependence in both the hard and the hadronic matrix elements. This is achieved by a modification of the standard shock wave approximation to derive the effective Feynman rules, which leads to a generic expression on which we then perform a partial twist expansion to get rid of quantities suppressed by the proper physical scales. We obtain a compact factorized master formula that can be used to investigate the Bjorken limit at leading twist. In particular, we recover the full one-loop result in the collinear limit for pure gluon exchange with the target. Finally, we discuss the subtleties in taking the simultaneous collinear and small x limit.

Abstract:Coherence phenomena, the increase with energy of coherence length and the non-universality of parton structure of the effective Pomeron are explained. New hard phenomena directly calculable in QCD such as diffractive electroproduction of states with $M^2\ll Q^2$ and the color transparency phenomenon as well as new options to measure the light-cone wave functions of various hadrons are considered. An analogue of Bjorken scaling is predicted for the diffractive electroproduction of $\rho$ mesons at large momentum transfers and for the production of large rapidity gap events, as observed at HERA. A phenomenological QCD evolution equation is suggested to calculate the basic characteristics of the large rapidity gap events. The increase of parton densities at small $x$ as well as new means to disentangle experimentally soft and hard physics are considered. We discuss constraints on the increase of deep inelastic amplitudes with $Q^2$ derived from the inconsistency of QCD predictions for inclusive and exclusive processes and from unitarity of the S matrix for collisions of wave packets. New ways to probe QCD physics of hard processes at large longitudinal distances and to answer the long standing problems on the origin of the Pomeron are suggested. Unresolved problems and perspectives of small $x$ physics are also outlined.

Abstract:We summarise existing experimental and theoretical knowledge on the structure function $F_2$ in the region of low $Q^2$ and low $x$. The constraints on the behaviour of structure functions in the limit $Q^2=0$ are listed. Phenomenological low $Q^2$ parametrisations of the $F_2$ are collected and their dynamical content is discussed. The high energy photoproduction and nuclear shadowing are also briefly described. Recent update of the low $Q^2$, low $x$ experimental data is given.

The limits of QGP-like effects towards smaller systems: from Pb-Pb down to pp and fixed-target collisions

Abstract:Experimental findings of recent years blurred the frontier between large and small systems. The features attributed to the Quark Gluon Plasma formation have also been found in smaller systems when measuring particle production in high multiplicity events. These common features arise in multiple sectors, namely the particle dynamics (known as collective flow) and also when considering hadrochemistry (e.g., strangeness enhancement). The limit in small systems where this non-trivial behaviour occurs, is of very high interest in the field and is actively being investigated. This is carried out by performing multi-differential analyses and by selecting collision systems that are smaller than pp collisions. The current experimental contour of the limits between large and small systems is discussed in these proceedings.

Abstract:Low-energy tests of fundamental symmetries and studies of neutrino properties provide a powerful window on physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this article, we provide a basic theoretical framework for a subsequent set of articles that review the progress and opportunities in various aspects of the low-energy program. We illustrate the physics reach of different low-energy probes in terms of an effective BSM mass scale and illustrate how this reach matches and, in some cases, even exceeds that accessible at the high energy frontier.

Abstract:This presentation briefly addresses three basic issues of low-energy QCD: first, whether the Nambu-Goldstone scenario of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is well established; secondly, whether there is a dynamical entanglement of the chiral and deconfinement crossover transitions in QCD; and thirdly, what is the status of knowledge about the phase diagram of QCD at low temperature and non-zero baryon density. These three topics were injected as key words into a panel discussion at the Schladming school on Challenges in QCD. The following exposition reflects the style and character of the discussions, with no claim of completeness.

Abstract:We apply the optimization procedure based on the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity to the third-order calculation of $\R$. The effective couplant remains finite, freezing to a value $\alpha_s/\pi = 0.26$ at low energies. Using Poggio-Quinn-Weinberg smearing we find good agreement between theory and experiment right down to zero energy.
