Abstract: The decays and mixing of $K$ mesons are remarkably sensitive to the weak interactions of quarks and leptons at high energies. They provide important tests of the standard model at both first and second order in the Fermi constant $G_F$ and offer a window into possible new phenomena at energies as high as 1,000 TeV. These possibilities become even more compelling as the growing capabilities of lattice QCD make high-precision standard model predictions possible. Here we discuss and attempt to forecast some of these capabilities.

Abstract:Rare kaon decays offer a powerful tool for investigating new physics in s → d transitions. Currently, many of the interesting decay modes are either measured with rather large uncertainties compared to their theoretical predictions or have not yet been observed. The future HIKE programme at CERN will provide unprecedented sensitivity to rare kaon decays, allowing for strong constraints on new physics scenarios with lepton flavour universality violation. We present the overall picture that emerges from a study of the different decay modes with a global analysis considering projections based on the HIKE programme, both with and without KOTO-II future measurements. We also highlight the most relevant decays and identify that in addition to the "golden channel", , the rare decay, especially in the electron sector offers strong constraints on short-distance physics.

Abstract:The rare kaon decays K -> pi l(+)l(-) and K -> pi nu(nu) over bar are flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes and hence promising channels with which to probe the limits of the standard model and to look for signs of new physics. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of lattice calculations of K -> pi l(+)l(-) decay amplitudes for which long-distance contributions are very significant. We show that the dominant finite-volume corrections (those decreasing as powers of the volume) are negligibly small and that, in the four-flavor theory, no new ultraviolet divergences appear as the electromagnetic current J and the effective weak Hamiltonian H-W approach each other. In addition, we demonstrate that one can remove the unphysical terms which grow exponentially with the range of the integration over the time separation between J and H-W. We will now proceed to exploratory numerical studies with the aim of motivating further experimental measurements of these decays. Our work extends the earlier study by Isidori et al. [1] which focused largely on the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences. In a companion paper [2] we discuss the evaluation of the long-distance contributions to K -> pi nu(nu) over bar decays; these contributions are expected to be at the level of a few percent for K+ decays.

Abstract:The importance of rare $K$ decays especially in the context of a kaon unitarity triangle (KUT) is emphasized. The decay $K_L \to \pi^0 \nu \bar \nu$ is theoretically very clean but experimentally extremely challenging. The Standard Model prediction $\mathcal{B}\sim 3 \times 10^{-11}$ is still about two orders of magnitude away from the current experimental upper bound. One way to continue to make progress towards the construction of a KUT is by improving the accuracy in the calculation of $\varepsilon'$. Another way which is the primary focus here is via studies of $K^0 \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \mu^-$. LHCb, J-PARC, the proposed HIKE project, phenomenology, and in fact precision studies on the lattice can all play a very important role in this context.

Abstract:As flavor changing neutral current processes, rare kaon decays K → πν ν are highly suppressed in the standard model and thus provide ideal probes for the observation of new physics effects.Given the importance of rare kaon decays, the CERN NA62 experiment aims at an observation of O(100) events of K + → π + ν ν decay and a 10%-precision measurement of the branching ratio in two years.Another experiment, J-PARC KOTO, is dedicated to search for the CP-violating K L → π 0 ν ν decay.Recognizing that the standard model predictions will soon be confronted with new experimental results, it is important to determine the long-distance contributions to K + → π + ν ν with a controlled error.Here I will present an exploratory calculation of the longdistance contributions to the K + → π + ν ν decay amplitude from first principles using lattice QCD.

Abstract:The rare decays of a kaon into a pion and a charged lepton/antilepton pair proceed via a flavour changing neutral current and therefore may only be induced beyond tree level in the Standard Model. This natural suppression makes these decays sensitive to the effects of potential New Physics. To discern such New Physics one must be able to control the errors on the Standard Model prediction of the decay amplitude. These particular decay channels however are dominated by a single photon exchange; this involves a sizeable long-distance hadronic contribution which represents the current major source of theoretical uncertainty. Here we outline our methodology for the computation of the long distance contributions to these rare decay amplitudes using lattice QCD, and present the numerical results of some exploratory studies using the Domain Wall Fermion ensembles of the RBC and UKQCD collaborations.

This overview of recent progress includes an updated evaluation of the CKM matrix element Vus. Abstract:RBC and UKQCD CollaborationsThe rare kaon decay K + → π + νν is highly suppressed in the standard model and thus provides an ideal place to search for new physics beyond the standard model.These decays are the principal objective of a new experiment, NA62 at CERN.Another new experiment to search for K L → π 0 νν is now underway at J-PARC.Given the goal of 10% precision by NA62, it is important to determine the long-distance contributions to the K + → π + νν amplitude with a controlled uncertainty.In this talk we will report the progress on the lattice QCD calculation of the longdistance contributions to the K + → π + νν decay amplitude, with an emphasis on the treatment of the short-distance divergence in the bilocal operator product.

Abstract:Standard lattice calculations in kaon physics are based on the evaluation of matrix elements of local operators between two single-hadron states or a single-hadron state and the vacuum. Recent progress in lattice QCD has gone beyond these standard observables. Abstract:The rare decays of a kaon into a pion and a lepton/antilepton pair proceed via a flavour changing neutral current and therefore first arise in the Standard Model only as a second order electroweak interaction. This natural suppression makes these decays sensitive to the effects of potential New Physics. However the rare decay channels $K^+\to\pi^+\ell^+\ell^-$ are dominated by long-distance contributions, where the two electroweak processes are separated by distances over which non-perturbative QCD effects play a significant role. In this talk I provide an update on the progress of our exploratory calculations of the long-distance contributions to $K^+\to\pi^+\ell^+\ell^-$ amplitudes, which make use of the Domain Wall Fermion ensembles of the RBC and UKQCD collaborations, and outline the prospects for further progress of the calculation.

Abstract:Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Abstract:We review a new method in order to determine the parameter $\bar{\eta}$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix from $K\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ decays, using interference effects in the time-dependent decay rate. Furthermore, we discuss a new precision relation for the phase-shift of the time-dependent oscillation. The new methodology enables the discovery potential of future time-dependent measurements of $K\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ decays for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:The rare kaon decays K -> pi nu(nu) over bar are strongly suppressed in the standard model and widely regarded as processes in which new phenomena, not predicted by the standard model, may be observed. Recognizing such new phenomena requires a precise standard model prediction for the branching ratio of K -> pi nu(nu) over bar with controlled uncertainty for both short-distance and long-distance contributions. In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of lattice QCD calculation of the long-distance contribution to rare kaon decays with the emphasis on K+ -> pi(+)nu(nu) over bar Our methodology covers the calculation of both W-W and Z-exchange diagrams. We discuss the estimation of the power-law, finite-volume corrections and two methods to consistently combine the long-distance contribution determined by the lattice methods outlined here with the short-distance parts that can be reliably determined using perturbation theory. It is a subsequent work of our first methodology paper on K -> pi l(+)l(-), where the focus was made on the gamma-exchange diagrams.
The Renaissance of Kaon Flavour Physics

Abstract:There is no doubt that in the coming years we will witness the renaissance of kaon flavour physics with crucial measurements of the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ that are very sensitive to new physics (NP) and are theoretically very clean. Simultaneously the role of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $\Delta M_K$, $K_L\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ in searching for NP will significantly increase through their improved estimates within the SM. In fact the hints for NP contributing to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ have been signalled last year through improved estimates of hadronic matrix elements of QCD and electroweak penguin operators $Q_6$ and $Q_8$ by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach. Also recent increased tensions between $\varepsilon_K$ and $\Delta M_{s,d}$ mass differences in $B_{s,d}^0-\bar B_{s,d}^0$ mixing within the SM and models with constrained MFV tell us that we should have tremendous fun in chasing NP through all these observables. The present talk discusses the hinted anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$,and $\Delta F=2$ transitions and summarizes possible implications of simultaneous anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$ for $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ and $\Delta M_K$ in models with tree-level $Z$ and $Z^\prime$ exchanges. The anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$, if confirmed, would signal new sources of CP violation. This is in contrast to the recent anomalies in $B$ physics that signal lepton flavour non-universalities and NP in CP-conserving observables. Highlights from recent flavour analyses of 331 models are briefly described.
