Abstract:Rare kaon decays offer a powerful tool for investigating new physics in s → d transitions. Currently, many of the interesting decay modes are either measured with rather large uncertainties compared to their theoretical predictions or have not yet been observed. The future HIKE programme at CERN will provide unprecedented sensitivity to rare kaon decays, allowing for strong constraints on new physics scenarios with lepton flavour universality violation. We present the overall picture that emerges from a study of the different decay modes with a global analysis considering projections based on the HIKE programme, both with and without KOTO-II future measurements. We also highlight the most relevant decays and identify that in addition to the "golden channel", , the rare decay, especially in the electron sector offers strong constraints on short-distance physics.

Abstract:In this write-up, we provide an overview of the existing theoretical framework concerning rare kaon decays, with a particular emphasis on flavour-changing neutral current processes. These decays offer crucial indirect pathways for investigating short-distance new physics. Our discussion will encompass standard model predictions for relevant observables, alongside an assessment of their capacity to probe new physics through a comparison with experimental data.

Abstract:Kaon physics has a glorious history. Parity violation, CP violation, GIM mechanism, CKM mechanism, Determination of Standard Model (SM) parameters, Hadronic physics all have imprints of kaon physics. Kaon physics still plays an important role in particle physics. Some of the main interests today in kaon physics are: The studies of CP violation and rare decays; Determination of SM parameters; Low energy tests of QCD, lattice QCD and low energy effective theories; New physics beyond the SM. There are also many studies of tests of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry in kaon decays. Some of the related work has been reported at this conference[1]. Since FPCP04 is a flavor and CP conference, I will mainly discuss flavor physics in kaon decays with emphases on: ǫK and ǫ ′ K/ǫK and related hadronic parameters; Rare kaon decays and the CKM parameters; And rare kaon decays and new physics beyond the SM. Abstract: The decays and mixing of $K$ mesons are remarkably sensitive to the weak interactions of quarks and leptons at high energies. They provide important tests of the standard model at both first and second order in the Fermi constant $G_F$ and offer a window into possible new phenomena at energies as high as 1,000 TeV. These possibilities become even more compelling as the growing capabilities of lattice QCD make high-precision standard model predictions possible. Here we discuss and attempt to forecast some of these capabilities.
The Renaissance of Kaon Flavour Physics

Abstract:There is no doubt that in the coming years we will witness the renaissance of kaon flavour physics with crucial measurements of the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ that are very sensitive to new physics (NP) and are theoretically very clean. Simultaneously the role of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $\Delta M_K$, $K_L\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ in searching for NP will significantly increase through their improved estimates within the SM. In fact the hints for NP contributing to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ have been signalled last year through improved estimates of hadronic matrix elements of QCD and electroweak penguin operators $Q_6$ and $Q_8$ by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach. Also recent increased tensions between $\varepsilon_K$ and $\Delta M_{s,d}$ mass differences in $B_{s,d}^0-\bar B_{s,d}^0$ mixing within the SM and models with constrained MFV tell us that we should have tremendous fun in chasing NP through all these observables. The present talk discusses the hinted anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$,and $\Delta F=2$ transitions and summarizes possible implications of simultaneous anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$ for $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ and $\Delta M_K$ in models with tree-level $Z$ and $Z^\prime$ exchanges. The anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$, if confirmed, would signal new sources of CP violation. This is in contrast to the recent anomalies in $B$ physics that signal lepton flavour non-universalities and NP in CP-conserving observables. Highlights from recent flavour analyses of 331 models are briefly described.

Abstract:During the last few years, new experimental and theoretical results have allowed ever more stringent tests of the Standard Model to be performed using kaon decays. This overview of recent progress includes an updated evaluation of the CKM matrix element Vus. Tests of CKM unitarity and gauge universality and lepton universality tests with Kl2 and Kl3 decays are discussed.

Kaon Theory: 50 Years Later

Abstract:We summarize the status of the Kaon Theory 50 years after the seminal paper of Kobayashi and Maskawa who pointed out that six quarks are necessary to have CP violation in the Standard Model (SM) and presented a parametrization of a $3\times 3$ unitary matrix that after the discovery of the charm quark in 1974 and the $b$ quark in 1977 dominated the field of flavour changing processes. One of the main goals of flavour physics since then was the determination of the four parameters of this matrix, which we will choose here to be $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and the two angles of the unitarity triangle, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ with $|V_{us}|$ introduced by Cabibbo in 1963. I will summarize recent strategy for determination of these parameters without new physics (NP) infection. It is based on the conjecture of the absence of relevant NP contributions to $\Delta F=2$ processes that indeed can be demonstrated by a negative rapid test: the $|V_{cb}|-\gamma$ plot. This in turn allows to obtain SM predictions for rare $K$ and $B$ decays that are most precise to date. We present strategies for the explanation of the anticipated anomaly in the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and the observed anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions that are consistent with our $\Delta F=2$ conjecture. In particular, the absence of NP in the parameter $\varepsilon_K$, still allows for significant NP effects in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and in rare Kaon decays, moreover in a correlated manner. Similar the absence of NP in $\Delta M_s$ combined with anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions hints for the presence of right-handed quark currents. We also discuss how the nature of neutrinos, Dirac vs. Majorana one, can be probed in $K\to\pi\nu\bar\nu$ and $B\to K(K^*)\nu\bar\nu$ decays. The present status of the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule and of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is summarized.

Abstract:Standard lattice calculations in kaon physics are based on the evaluation of matrix elements of local operators between two single-hadron states or a single-hadron state and the vacuum. Recent progress in lattice QCD has gone beyond these standard observables. I will review the status and prospects of lattice kaon physics with an emphasis on non-leptonic K → ππ decay and long-distance processes including K0-K0 mixing and rare kaon decays.
Prospects for a Lattice Computation of Rare Kaon Decay Amplitudes:K→πℓ+ℓ−decays

Abstract:The rare kaon decays K -> pi l(+)l(-) and K -> pi nu(nu) over bar are flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes and hence promising channels with which to probe the limits of the standard model and to look for signs of new physics. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of lattice calculations of K -> pi l(+)l(-) decay amplitudes for which long-distance contributions are very significant. We show that the dominant finite-volume corrections (those decreasing as powers of the volume) are negligibly small and that, in the four-flavor theory, no new ultraviolet divergences appear as the electromagnetic current J and the effective weak Hamiltonian H-W approach each other. In addition, we demonstrate that one can remove the unphysical terms which grow exponentially with the range of the integration over the time separation between J and H-W. We will now proceed to exploratory numerical studies with the aim of motivating further experimental measurements of these decays. Our work extends the earlier study by Isidori et al. [1] which focused largely on the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences. In a companion paper [2] we discuss the evaluation of the long-distance contributions to K -> pi nu(nu) over bar decays; these contributions are expected to be at the level of a few percent for K+ decays.

Abstract:Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop.

Abstract:An overview of KAON 99 with commentary is presented. Emphasis is placed on the state of CKM mixing and CP violation. The Jarlskog invariant, J_{CP}, is shown to provide a useful quantitative comparison of K and B phenomenology. The potential of future rare and ``forbidden'' decay experiments to probe O(3000 TeV) ``New Physics'' is also described.

Abstract:Quark flavour physics is the study of hadrons, their properties, and their decays into other particles. As a discipline it simultaneously catalogues the nature of physical states within the Standard Model of particle physics, and in doing so tests the consistency and completeness of the Standard Model's description of reality. Following the discovery of the Higgs field, it is more essential than ever to critically examine the Standard Model's own coherence. Precision studies of quark flavour are one of the most sensitive experimental instruments for this task. I give a brief and necessarily selective overview of recent developments in quark flavour physics and discuss prospects for the next generation of experiments and facilities, with an emphasis on the energy scales of beyond Standard Model physics probed by these types of measurements.

Abstract:Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Abstract:As flavor changing neutral current processes, rare kaon decays K → πν ν are highly suppressed in the standard model and thus provide ideal probes for the observation of new physics effects.Given the importance of rare kaon decays, the CERN NA62 experiment aims at an observation of O(100) events of K + → π + ν ν decay and a 10%-precision measurement of the branching ratio in two years.Another experiment, J-PARC KOTO, is dedicated to search for the CP-violating K L → π 0 ν ν decay.Recognizing that the standard model predictions will soon be confronted with new experimental results, it is important to determine the long-distance contributions to K + → π + ν ν with a controlled error.Here I will present an exploratory calculation of the longdistance contributions to the K + → π + ν ν decay amplitude from first principles using lattice QCD.

Abstract:Hyperon nonleptonic decays that change strangeness by two units, such as Ξ→Nπ and Ω−→nK−,Λπ−,Σ(*)π , are highly suppressed in the standard model. Only a few of them have been searched for to date, leading to experimental upper bounds that are many orders of magnitude above the expectations of the standard model. This leaves ample opportunity to look for indications of new physics in these processes. At the same time, most, but not all, ΔS=2 interactions beyond the standard model are severely constrained by kaon-mixing data. We present two scenarios where new physics satisfying the kaon-mixing constraints can enhance the hyperon decay rates to levels that can be probed in future searches by BESIII and LHCb and at the proposed Super Tau-Charm Factory.
