Abstract:Kaon physics has a glorious history. Parity violation, CP violation, GIM mechanism, CKM mechanism, Determination of Standard Model (SM) parameters, Hadronic physics all have imprints of kaon physics. Kaon physics still plays an important role in particle physics. Some of the main interests today in kaon physics are: The studies of CP violation and rare decays; Determination of SM parameters; Low energy tests of QCD, lattice QCD and low energy effective theories; New physics beyond the SM. There are also many studies of tests of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry in kaon decays. Some of the related work has been reported at this conference[1]. Since FPCP04 is a flavor and CP conference, I will mainly discuss flavor physics in kaon decays with emphases on: ǫK and ǫ ′ K/ǫK and related hadronic parameters; Rare kaon decays and the CKM parameters; And rare kaon decays and new physics beyond the SM. In the SM, flavor changing neutral current and CP violating phenomena are all related to the CKM matrix in the charged current interaction of the W-boson with quarks,

Abstract:The Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) hypothesis about the existence of a third generation of quarks represents a cornerstone of the Standard Model (SM). Fifty years after this seminal paper, flavor physics continues to represent a privileged observatory on physics occurring at high energy scales. In this paper I first review this statement using general effective-theory arguments, highlighting some interesting modern lessons from the KM paper. I then discuss some novel extensions of the SM based on the concept of flavor deconstruction: the hypothesis that gauge interactions are manifestly flavor non universal in the ultraviolet. The phenomenological consequences of this class of models are also briefly illustrated.

Abstract: The decays and mixing of $K$ mesons are remarkably sensitive to the weak interactions of quarks and leptons at high energies. They provide important tests of the standard model at both first and second order in the Fermi constant $G_F$ and offer a window into possible new phenomena at energies as high as 1,000 TeV. These possibilities become even more compelling as the growing capabilities of lattice QCD make high-precision standard model predictions possible. Here we discuss and attempt to forecast some of these capabilities.

Abstract:This is an overview of quark flavor physics as presented in a plenary talk at Lattice 2023. In the first part, I discuss the main processes and lattice-QCD inputs used to determine the Wolfenstein parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. In the second part, I review selected further processes that are being used to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. New results presented at Lattice 2023 are referenced throughout, but detailed discussions are limited to selected work published prior to the conference. QED corrections, inclusive decays on the lattice, and processes involving hadronic resonances are not discussed in detail here, as they were covered in other plenary talks at Lattice 2023 and Lattice 2022.

The Renaissance of Kaon Flavour Physics

Abstract:There is no doubt that in the coming years we will witness the renaissance of kaon flavour physics with crucial measurements of the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ that are very sensitive to new physics (NP) and are theoretically very clean. Simultaneously the role of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $\Delta M_K$, $K_L\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ in searching for NP will significantly increase through their improved estimates within the SM. In fact the hints for NP contributing to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ have been signalled last year through improved estimates of hadronic matrix elements of QCD and electroweak penguin operators $Q_6$ and $Q_8$ by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach. Also recent increased tensions between $\varepsilon_K$ and $\Delta M_{s,d}$ mass differences in $B_{s,d}^0-\bar B_{s,d}^0$ mixing within the SM and models with constrained MFV tell us that we should have tremendous fun in chasing NP through all these observables. The present talk discusses the hinted anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$,and $\Delta F=2$ transitions and summarizes possible implications of simultaneous anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$ for $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_{L}\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ and $\Delta M_K$ in models with tree-level $Z$ and $Z^\prime$ exchanges. The anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$, if confirmed, would signal new sources of CP violation. This is in contrast to the recent anomalies in $B$ physics that signal lepton flavour non-universalities and NP in CP-conserving observables. Highlights from recent flavour analyses of 331 models are briefly described.

Abstract:We review theoretical approaches to form factors that arise in heavy-meson decays and are hadronic expressions of non-perturbative QCD. After motivating their origin in QCD factorisation, we retrace their evolution from quark-model calculations to non-perturbative QCD techniques with an emphasis on formulations of truncated heavy-light amplitudes based upon Dyson-Schwinger equations. We compare model predictions exemplarily for the F-B ->pi (q(2)) transition form factor and discuss new results for the (gD center dot D pi) coupling in the hadronic D* decay.

Abstract:After pointing out the amazing success of the CKM description in accommodating the phenomenology of flavour changing neutral currents I review the status of theoretical technologies for extracting CKM parameters from data. I sketch novel directions, namely attempts to deal with quark-hadron duality in a (semi)quantitative way and to develop a QCD description of two-body modes of $B$ mesons. After commenting on predictions for $\epsilon ^{\prime}/\epsilon$ and CP asymmetries in B decays I address indirect probes for New Physics in $D^0$ oscillations and CP violation, in $K_{\mu 3}$ decays and electric dipole moments. I describe in which way searching for New Physics in B decays provides an exciting adventure with novel challenges not encountered before.

Flavor Dependence of Annihilation Parameters in QCD Factorization

Abstract:For B-d,B-s -> pi K--/+(+/-) and (KK(*))-K-(*) decays, the flavor symmetry-breaking effects may be particularly small since the final-state interactions should be the same between the corresponding B-d and B-s decays due to the charge conjugation symmetry of the final states. This is consistent with the newly measured direct CP asymmetry of Bs -> pi K-+(-). These decays are thus supposed to be important in testing the Standard Model and in probing new physics effects. However, the observation of pure annihilation decay Bs -> pi(+)pi(-) appears to imply a large annihilation scenario with rho(A) similar to 3, in contrast to the case of rho(A) similar to 1 in B-u,B-d decays in the framework of QCD factorization. This seems to indicate unexpectedly large flavor symmetry-breaking effects between the annihilation amplitudes of B-s and B-u,B-d decays. This apparent contradiction could be resolved by noticing that there is a priori no reason to justify the common practice of assuming the universality of annihilation parameters for different Dirac structures of effective operators. We then argue that, for B-d,B-s -> pi K--/+(+/-) decays, the flavor symmetry-breaking effects of annihilation amplitudes have all been included in the initial-state decay constants and are thus small. But the flavor symmetry-breaking effects in B-d,B-s -> (KK(*))-K-(*) decays are likely to be much larger, as part of the annihilation topologies of B-s -> KK decay could be related to B-s -> pi(+)pi(-) decay. Therefore when new physics effects are searched for in these decay channels, care must be taken to consider the potentially large flavor symmetry-breaking effects in more detail.
Flavor phenomenology of an extended 2HDM with inverse seesaw mechanism

Abstract:We perform a detailed and comprehensive study of several flavor physics observables in both lepton and quark sectors within the framework of an extended 2HDM theory where the inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented to generate the SM fermion mass hierarchy. In that theory, the SM gauge symmetry is supplemented by the local $U(1)_X$ and discrete $Z_4\times Z_2$ groups. In particular, we find that the leptonic flavor observables specifically, the branching ratios of LFV decays $\mu\to e\gamma, \tau\to e(\mu)\gamma$ and the anomalous magnetic moments $\Delta a_{e(\mu)}$ strongly depend on the couplings of the neutral CP even(odd) Higgses with exotic charged lepton $E_1$, whereas other observables involving BR($l\to 3l'$), Mu-$\overline{\text{Mu}}$ transition and coherent conversion $\mu \to e $ in a muonic atom are predicted to be less than several orders of magnitude compared to the corresponding experimental limits. Regarding the quark sector, the most stringent limits arising from the FCNC process involving the down-type quark $d_a\to d_b$ ($a=1,2,3$) transitions such as BR($\bar{B}\to X_s \gamma$), BR$(B_s\to \mu^+\mu^-)$, and meson mixing $ \Delta m_{K,B_s, B_d}$. Considering the obtained constraints from these observables, the new physics contributions to other observables namely BR$(B_s\to \tau^+\mu^-)$, BR$(B^+\to K^+\tau^+\tau^-)$, BR$(B^+\to K^+\tau^+\mu^-)$, and FCCC $b\to c$ transition LFUV ratios $R_{D^{(*)}}$ are shown to be remarkably small. Regarding the observables in the up-type quark transitions, the FCNC top quark processes $t\to u(c)\gamma$ and $t\to u(c)h$ have branching ratios consistent with the experimental limits. Additionally, observables related to SM-like Higgs boson decays BR$(h\to \bar{l}'l)$ and modified couplings $a_{h\bar{f}f}$ are also discussed.

Abstract:Heavy flavor hadrons have long been considered as a probe of the quark–gluon plasma created in high energy nuclear collisions. In this paper, we review the heavy flavor properties under extreme conditions and the realization in heavy ion experiments. After a short introduction on heavy flavor properties in vacuum, we emphasize the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on heavy flavors, including shadowing effect, Cronin effect, and nuclear absorption for the former and Debye screening and regeneration for the latter. Then we discuss, in the frame of transport and coalescence models, these medium induced changes in open and closed heavy flavors in nuclear collisions and the comparison with nucleon–nucleon collisions. Considering the extremely strong electromagnetic and rotational fields generated in non-central nuclear collisions, which are widely studied in recent years, we finally investigate their effects on heavy flavor production and evolution in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:Analyses of heavy mesons and baryons hadronic charmless decays using the flavor SU(3) symemtry can be formulated in two different forms. One is to construct the SU(3) irreducible representation amplitude (IRA) by decomposing effective Hamiltonian, and the other is to draw the topological diagrams (TDA). In the flavor SU(3) limit, we study various $B/D\to PP,VP,VV$, $B_c\to DP/DV$ decays, and two-body nonleptonic decays of beauty/charm baryons, and demonstrate that when all terms are included these two ways of analyzing the decay amplitudes are completely equivalent. Furthermore we clarify some confusions in drawing topological diagrams using different ways of describing beauty/charm baryons.

Abstract:Standard lattice calculations in kaon physics are based on the evaluation of matrix elements of local operators between two single-hadron states or a single-hadron state and the vacuum. Recent progress in lattice QCD has gone beyond these standard observables. I will review the status and prospects of lattice kaon physics with an emphasis on non-leptonic K → ππ decay and long-distance processes including K0-K0 mixing and rare kaon decays.
The Flavor of QCD Axion Dark Matter

Abstract:We argue that demanding a consistent cosmological history, including the absence of domain walls and strongly interacting relics at the Peccei-Quinn scale, singles out two concrete realizations of hadronic QCD axions as viable dark matter models. These realizations generally feature flavor-violating axion couplings to Standard Model quarks that are unsuppressed at low energies. As a consequence, experiments looking for flavor-violating hadronic processes involving the axion can be sensitive probes of QCD axion dark matter models. In particular, we show that the NA62 and KOTO experiments could detect the $K\rightarrow\pi + a$ decay for axions consistent with the observed dark matter abundance via the post-inflationary misalignment mechanism.

Abstract:We compute the kaon's valence-quark (twist-two parton) distribution amplitude (PDA) by projecting its Poincaré-covariant Bethe–Salpeter wave-function onto the light-front. At a scale ζ=2GeV, the PDA is a broad, concave and asymmetric function, whose peak is shifted 12–16% away from its position in QCD's conformal limit. These features are a clear expression of SU(3)-flavour-symmetry breaking. They show that the heavier quark in the kaon carries more of the bound-state's momentum than the lighter quark and also that emergent phenomena in QCD modulate the magnitude of flavour-symmetry breaking: it is markedly smaller than one might expect based on the difference between light-quark current masses. Our results add to a body of evidence which indicates that at any energy scale accessible with existing or foreseeable facilities, a reliable guide to the interpretation of experiment requires the use of such nonperturbatively broadened PDAs in leading-order, leading-twist formulae for hard exclusive processes instead of the asymptotic PDA associated with QCD's conformal limit. We illustrate this via the ratio of kaon and pion electromagnetic form factors: using our nonperturbative PDAs in the appropriate formulae, FK/Fπ=1.23 at spacelike-Q2=17GeV2, which compares satisfactorily with the value of 0.92(5) inferred in e+e− annihilation at s=17GeV2.

Abstract:Low-energy experiments involving kaon, B-meson, D-meson, and hyperon flavor-changing neutral transitions have confirmed the loop-induced flavor-changing neutral current picture of the standard model. The continuing study of these processes is essential to further refine this picture and ultimately understand the flavor dynamics. In this paper we consider deviations from the standard model in the charm sector and their effect on flavor-changing neutral current processes. Specifically, we parametrize new physics in terms of left- and right-handed anomalous couplings of the W boson to the charm quark. We present a comprehensive study of existing constraints and point out those measurements that are most sensitive to new physics of this type.

Abstract:We critically review the validity of heavy-quark spin and flavor symmetries in heavy-light decay constants, form factors and effective couplings obtained within a nonperturbative framework, the ingredients of which are all motivated by Dyson-Schwinger equations studies of QCD.Along the way, we make new predictions for two effective nonphysical couplings: g D s DK = 24.1 +2.5 -1.6 and g B s BK = 33.3+4.0 -3.7 .
