Abstract:Editorial: In this changing society, numerous intellectuals have made bold forecasting about tomorrow’s education. As Dr. Zane L. Berge mentioned in this interview, mode of industrial production within our society is being replaced with models that rely on the rapid growth in technology, an increase in the accessibility of information, a more critically aware population, and a shift from the production of goods to a service economy. These factors are causing significant change in education as well. Technology is allowing non-traditional organizations involved in higher education to meet the curricular challenges many students are presenting.However, how best to utilize technology to meet the changing demands is a big challenging facing today’s educators. Dr. Berge has accumulated abundant experiences in applying technologies in education and training arenas. Abstract:Today, corporate companies spend a lot of time on and attach importance to job interviews in recruitment. In job interviews, they select or eliminate many of the candidates using interview techniques. This poses a serious problem, especially for candidates who have not had job interview experience, even though they meet sufficient requirements. Because these candidates do not have previous interview experience, they experience more difficulties in this process. In this regard, the study is about a system created in a virtual environment that allows a job interview experience through a user interface. The system subject of the study is a model consisting of a user interface unit, server, interview information database, language processing unit, behavior analysis unit, virtual interview unit, reporting unit, and social media integration unit. This proposed model has been detailed modularly through the web-based system.

Abstract:Technology trends play an important role in the hiring process for software and IT professionals. In a recent study of 591 software professionals in both hiring (130) and technical (558) roles, we found empirical support for a tendency to overemphasize technology trends in résumés and the application process. 60% of the hiring professionals agreed that such trends would influence their job advertisements. Among the software professionals, 82% believed that using trending technologies in their daily work would make them more attractive for potential future employers. This phenomenon has previously been reported anecdotally and somewhat humorously under the label Résumé-Driven Development (RDD). Our article seeks to initiate a more serious debate about the consequences of RDD on software development practice. We explain how the phenomenon may constitute a harmful self-sustaining dynamic, and provide practical recommendations for both the hiring and applicant perspectives to change the current situation for the better.

Abstract:Job interviews are usually high-stakes social situations where professional and behavioral skills are required for a satisfactory outcome. Professional job interview trainers give educative feedback about the shown behavior according to common standards. This feedback can be helpful concerning the improvement of behavioral skills needed for job interviews. A technological approach for generating such feedback might be a playful and low-key starting point for job interview training. Therefore, we extended an interactive virtual job interview training system with a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based approach that first detects behavioral weaknesses and subsequently generates personalized feedback. To evaluate the usefulness of the generated feedback, we conducted a mixed-methods pilot study using mock-ups from the job interview training system. The overall study results indicate that the GAN-based generated behavioral feedback is helpful. Moreover, participants assessed that the feedback would improve their job interview performance.

Abstract:Since its inception, humanity has depended on the skills of individuals and groups. Over millennia, humanity and skills evolved, differentiating those who would prosper from those who did not. From gatherers to hunters, from agriculture to industry, and from IT to AI, the complexity and rate of change have increased exponentially, driven by language, curiosity, and communication. IT skills and a variety of IT professions have dominated the past 25 years. At this juncture, advances in AI have altered the technology landscape, causing tectonic shifts in many professions. How will IT professions evolve, and how should IT professionals adapt? We contend that, first, required skill sets will rapidly change, increasing the importance of continuing education. Second, with the increased adoption of AI, the importance of data will also increase, demanding an ever-growing need for data science skills. Finally, many IT activities will be automated, requiring IT professionals to collaborate with AI assistants and take more strategic roles.

EZInterviewer: to Improve Job Interview Performance with Mock Interview Generator

Abstract:Interview has been regarded as one of the most crucial step for recruitment. To fully prepare for the interview with the recruiters, job seekers usually practice with mock interviews between each other. However, such a mock interview with peers is generally far away from the real interview experience: the mock interviewers are not guaranteed to be professional and are not likely to behave like a real interviewer. Due to the rapid growth of online recruitment in recent years, recruiters tend to have online interviews, which make it possible to collect real interview data from real interviewers. In this paper, we propose a novel application named EZInterviewer, which aims to learn from the online interview data and provides mock interview services to the job seekers. The task is challenging in two ways: (1) the interview data are now available but still of low-resource; (2) to generate meaningful and relevant interview dialogs requires thorough understanding of both resumes and job descriptions. To address the low-resource challenge, EZInterviewer is trained on a very small set of interview dialogs. The key idea is to reduce the number of parameters that rely on interview dialogs by disentangling the knowledge selector and dialog generator so that most parameters can be trained with ungrounded dialogs as well as the resume data that are not low-resource. Specifically, to keep the dialog on track for professional interviews, we pre-train a knowledge selector module to extract information from resume in the job-resume matching. A dialog generator is also pre-trained with ungrounded dialogs, learning to generate fluent responses. Then, a decoding manager is finetuned to combine information from the two pre-trained modules to generate the interview question. Evaluation results on a real-world job interview dialog dataset indicate that we achieve promising results to generate mock interviews. With the help of EZInterviewer, we hope to make mock interview practice become easier for job seekers.

Abstract:On May 7, 2020, the Coalition for Physician Accountability's released "Medical Students in the Class of 2021: Moving Across Institutions for Post Graduate Training," which comprises official recommendations on keeping programs and medical students safe during the upcoming match cycle with the challenges posed by COVID-19. In these recommendations, away rotations are discouraged, and all programs are compelled to commit to virtual interviews. Unlike employers and applicants in other industries, orthopaedic residency/fellowship programs and candidates seeking those positions have not routinely conducted virtual interviews. Without in-person interviews, applicants may perceive a limited ability to demonstrate their qualifications, judge program culture, and gauge ultimate program compatibility. Likewise, programs may perceive the inability to evaluate a candidate in real time, physically show program strengths, and ultimately judge applicant compatibility. Careful preparation and execution of a virtual interview can overcome these perceived limitations, whereas benefits, such as decreased cost for both programs and applicants, can make virtual interviews appealing. The purpose of this review was to help define a virtual interview, illustrate the benefits, and offer tips to both programs and applicants on how to prepare and perform optimally on an interview day.

Abstract:Automated recruitment tools are proliferating. While having the promise of improving efficiency, various risks, including bias, challenges the potential of these tools. An in-depth understanding of the perceived risk factors and needs from the perspective of both recruiters and job seekers is needed. We address this through an interview study in the high-tech industry to compare and contrast the concerns of these two roles. We found that the importance of clarifying position requirements and assessing candidates as "whole individuals" are commonly discussed by both recruiters and job seekers. In contrast, while recruiters tended to be more aware of cognitive bias and desired more tool support during interviews, job seekers voiced more desire towards a healthy candidate-company relationship. Additionally, both roles considered the uncertainty of the current technology capability and reduced human contact as concerns for using automated tools. Based on these results, we provided design implications for automated recruitment tools and related decision-support technologies.

Abstract:Conducting efficient and effective user experience (UX) interviews often poses challenges, such as maintaining focus on key topics and managing the duration of interviews and post-interview analyses. To address these issues, this paper introduces InsightPulse, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based hardware and software system designed to streamline and enhance the UX interview process through speech analysis and Artificial Intelligence. InsightPulse provides real-time support during user interviews by automatically identifying and highlighting key discussion points, proactively suggesting follow-up questions, and generating thematic summaries. These features enable more insightful discoveries and help to manage interview duration effectively. Abstract:Despite having predictive validity above other selection methods, structured interviews are not always used. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework, this study examines the role of interview training in increasing structured interview acceptance (SIA). Based on a survey of 190 practitioners in the fields of Human Resources, I‐O Psychology, and other professionals who conduct employment interviews, our results show that not all interviewer training programs are equally effective in increasing SIA. While participation in formal interviewer training is related to SIA, SIA could be influenced more by incorporating certain training components, including training on how to avoid rating errors (r = .21), learning how to evaluate interview answers (r = .19), interview practice/roleplaying (r = .17), training on job analysis (r = .15), legal issues (r = .15), background and purpose of the interview (r = .13), job requirements for the position(s) being filled (r = .13), and a discussion about interview verbal and nonverbal behaviors to avoid (r = .13). Additionally, we found that training components display different relationship with SIA across our two sub‐samples. For example, in the MTurk sample (i.e., composed primarily from a managerial population) including job analysis, how to evaluate answers, and how to avoid rating errors correlated significantly with SIA. However, in the non‐MTurk sample (i.e., composed primarily from a HR professional population), interview practice/role playing, rapport building, use of a videotaped interview to guide instructions, and how to make decisions from interview data correlated significantly with SIA. This highlights the importance of training needs analysis to better understand the audience before training. We suggest that organizations incorporate the identified components into interviewer training to enhance the structured interviews acceptance and ensure that interviewers are more likely to implement structured interview techniques in practice.

Pharmacy Student Perceptions of Using AI-Based Interview Software (Big Interview) for Career Preparation

Abstract:Objective: The goal of this project was to understand the use of artificial intelligence-based interview software (Big Interview) for job interview preparation and its impact on pharmacy students' self-confidence and interview preparedness. Methods: Two classes of third-year pharmacy students (n = 234) enrolled in Professional Development Seminar were assigned to use Big Interview after attending lectures regarding interview best practices. After the activity, students were assigned to reflect on their experience using the software. Those responses were deidentified and retrospectively reviewed for analysis. Results: Of the 234 students, 229 completed the activity, and 55.0% indicated they had increased self-confidence after the experience, 79.9% thought the activity increased their preparedness for interviews, and 34.5% and 38.9% had high or moderate self-confidence in their ability to earn a second interview or job offer, respectively. Thematic analysis identified positive themes of self-awareness and preparation for future interviews, whereas negative themes included lack of authenticity and lack of job descriptions. Conclusion: The data suggest that the use of Big Interview increases student confidence and preparedness for future interviews.

Abstract:Virtual reality interview simulator (VRIS) is an effective and valid tool that uses virtual reality technology to train people's interview skills. Typically, it offers candidates prone to being very nervous during interviews the opportunity to practice interviews in a safe and manageable virtual environment and realistic settings, providing real-time feedback from a virtual interviewer on their performance. It helps interviewees improve their skills, reduce their fears, gain confidence, and minimize the cost and time associated with traditional interview preparation. Yet, the major anxiety-inducing elements remain unknown. During an interview, the anxiety levels, overall experience, and performance of interviewees might be affected by various circumstances. By analyzing electrodermal activity and questionnaire, we investigated the influence of five variables: (I) Realism ; (II) Question type ; (III) Interviewer attitude ; (IV) Timing ; and (V) Preparation . As such, an orthogonal design with eight experiments ( matrix) was implemented, in which 19 college students took part in the experiments. Considering the anxiety, overall experience, and performance of the interviewees, we found that Question type plays a major role; secondly, Realism , Preparation , and Interviewer attitude all have middle influence; lastly, Timing has little to no impact. Specifically, professional interview questions elicited a greater degree of anxiety than personal ones among the categories of interview questions. This work contributes to our understanding of anxiety-stimulating factors during job interviews in virtual reality and provides cues for designing future VRIS.
