Abstract:We've all heard how academia evaluates our work: papers, papers, and... more papers. While academic publishing is an essential part of disseminating research results, it is only one activity amongst many that make up a career (or for that matter, a life). The following essay is based on an invited talk for the NSF AAPF Symposium, given at the 2018 Winter AAS Meeting. Here, as in the original talk, I offer some practical advice for thinking about one's work within the larger frame of your personal values and goals. While I will draw examples from my own career, I hope to offer readers guidance in articulating what is important to them, aligning their career choices with those values, and establishing metrics that go beyond the h-index.

Abstract:Journal of Career Development, Ahead of Print. The opportunity to construct a career and the prevalence of virtual work are hallmarks of the extant environment that makes career decisions and workforce recruitment increasingly complex. We seek to understand jobseekers' choices in this context, which allows for great personal control and independence. We draw on the career self-management stream of social-cognitive career theory to inform our examination of the influences of certain applicant work preferences and individual characteristics on preferences for gig or traditional work and related job-seeking behaviors. Findings from this study indicate that a sense of agency and need for affiliation are significantly related to new and transitional job seekers' willingness to pursue face-to-face versus gig work opportunities. Additionally, this work revealed a positive relationship between a preference for face-to-face and gig work options, indicating that incorporating a combination of the two may be optimal for employees and employers.

Abstract:Our study presents the career trajectories of engineering Ph.D.s from the perspectives of both industry and academia. In this report, we identified approximately 34 engineering Ph. D. graduates from U.S. programs who: (1) worked only in academia; (2) worked only in industry; (3) worked in academia first and now work in industry; or (4) worked in industry first and now work on academia. Using curricula vitae (CVs) as a main data source, we mapped out the detailed career trajectories of each participant. The comparisons within and across different groups characterized the particular career developmental models for each group. Both academia-only and industry-only groups demonstrate a relative linear developmental career path. However, it is notable that participants in the academia-only group tend to hold multiple appointments when compared to their industry-only peers. Participants from groups (3) and (4) showed much more complex career patterns than the first two groups. Also, all of our participants in the last two groups hold leadership positions currently. This observation emphasized the importance of leadership skills training for engineering Ph. D. s. Overall, this reports summarized pilot findings on career trajectories of engineering Ph.D.s. It provides unique insights for both the career planning of recent engineering Ph.D. graduates and the training and preparation of current engineering Ph.D.s.

Abstract:This study contributes to the current research in career and professional identity development in that it developed a validated competency-based framework to enhance professional and self-awareness of future engineers. Through a mixed-method design, key competencies were identified for three professional roles for early career engineers. Ninety-six engineers and HR experts from different fields were involved. This resulted in three portraits of early career engineers in practice (engineers in a role focusing on radical innovation, on process optimisation and/or on customised solutions) and what it requires to be successful in these roles. For example, perseverance and creativity were deemed essential for engineers in an innovative role, whereas positive critical attitude and stress resistance were indicated essential for engineers focusing on optimisation. The competency profiles with an aspiration to career perspectives can be a valuable instrument in creating more diversity in engineering. Implications for education, industry, and future research are discussed.

Abstract:Background Engineering curricula are built around faculty and accreditors' perceptions of what knowledge, skills, and abilities graduates will need in engineering careers. However, the people making these decisions may not be fully aware of what industry employers require for engineering graduates. Purpose/Hypothesis The purpose of this study is to determine how industry employer‐sought professional and technical skills vary among engineering disciplines and levels of education. Design/Method Using a large sample (n = 26,103) of mined job advertisements, we use the O*NET skills database to determine the frequencies of different professional and technical skills for biomedical, civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineers with bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees. Results The most frequently sought professional skill is problem‐solving; the most frequently sought technical skills across disciplines are Microsoft Office software and computer‐aided design software. Although not the most frequently requested skills, job advertisements including the Python and MATLAB programming languages paid significantly higher salaries than those without. Conclusions The findings of this study have important implications for engineering program leaders and curriculum designers choosing which skills to teach students so that they are best prepared to get and excel in engineering jobs. The results also show which skills students can prioritize investing their time in so that they receive the largest financial return on their investment.

Choice Architecture and the Potential to Nudge Career Development at Scale

Abstract:Journal of Career Assessment, Ahead of Print. Choice architecture refers to features of the psychological, social, and physical environment that can affect the process and outcome of human decisions. With roots in cognitive psychology and behavioral economics, it has become a fertile topic of inquiry in a wide range of behavioral domains. Thaler and Sunstein (2008) popularized choice architecture and its concept of nudges, which are small environmental adjustments that can facilitate behavioral choices without limiting personal autonomy. Nudge interventions have been studied intensely in relation to health, financial, ecological, and consumer outcomes. In this article, I consider how the strategic use of digital nudges might be used in career interventions, particularly in the context of a proactive, large-scale service delivery model. After overviewing the efficacy of nudge interventions in other literatures (e.g., educational decision-making), I suggest an agenda for designing and testing career development nudges. Though they often yield modest effect sizes, nudges may have potential as a cost-effective addition to the career intervention repertoire, providing both a means of assisting those who have been underserved by traditional career services and an outreach bridge between technology- and counselor-based interventions.

Abstract:Individuals are looking for ways to continue to contribute their skills, to gain value, and to improve their employment prospects. On the other hand, employers face important choices as to whether to use technological advances to drive efficiency and reduce costs or to explore how to harness technology to reshape jobs in ways that deliver more value and meaning. This has resulted in educators and policy makers facing calls to rethink how we should prepare and train people for a changing workplace and what paths people can take to gain skills over a longer career with multiple chapters of career re-engineering. The objective of this chapter is to outline the dimensions of the future of work and the corresponding questions that they pose. An analysis of current extant literature was explored, and practical answers to the questions were used to develop a theoretical framework for teaching how to work with people (in person and remotely) and technology (artificial intelligence and robots) using creativity and innovation in a post-pandemic society.

Abstract:Background A perceived fit between personal values and what a career offers is critical for college students pursuing and persisting in that career. Purpose/Hypothesis(es) We, therefore, investigated the career values of engineering undergraduates through language in two different studies. Study 1 (N = 35) examined students' written postgraduation plans for agentic and communal career value themes. Drawing on Study 1 themes, Study 2 (N = 918) examined the association of achievement‐related and interpersonal word categories in written narratives to surveyed career values. Design/Method In Study 1, inductive and deductive approaches were used to identify agentic and communal career values. In Study 2, regressions were conducted using achievement‐related and interpersonal words as outcomes. Results Study 1 found agentic and communal value themes. Agentic value themes included career, personal development, and financial gains. Communal value themes included helping others and being family‐oriented. Results from Study 2 showed that students' language use in the discussion of their careers was associated with surveyed career values. Conclusion Although engineering students hold more agentic than communal values, they hold both career values, which may have implications for supporting students from diverse backgrounds.

Abstract:More and more scholars have attempted to explore the real-world scenarios from the industry view so as to deepen the understanding of the engineering practice and improve engineering education accordingly.Currently, relevant international research has been increasing on this topic, but empirical research from industry perspective in China is still scarce.This work-in-progress focuses on understanding early-career engineers' perspective in China using the theoretical framework of Cognitive Apprenticeship (CA), which describes the learning environment in four aspects: the content taught/learnt, the teaching/learning methods employed, the sequencing of learning activities, and the sociology of learning.Moreover, this study employs semistructured interview to collect data from different industries.Preliminary findings suggested that the content that new engineers learnt included both the technical and non-technical aspects.The engineers learned through multiple venues, including such as learning by themselves and learning from their mentors.This study will provide practical suggestions for improving engineering education in both China and other similar contexts.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the causes, impacts, and varying perspectives of how two years of education can alter a person's ambitions. A qualitative research design, specifically the case study approach was used in this study. It focused on why the participants enrolled in a college program that was not aligned with their SHS Strand. The responses are subsequently transcribed and themes are identified. Students whose college courses do not correspond to their Senior High School strands have questioned their previous strand selection. This is due to difficulties they encountered as a result of the misalignment. According to the general findings, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a career is one's interest. It was also evident within the data presented that the finances and practicality of the predetermined college courses that the students chose were weighed into their decision-making. It also shows that the majority of the participants agreed that their families have an impact on their career choices. The study also discovered that doing things that are not one's passion in the first place can be difficult, but it can help people challenge their abilities. The study concludes that indeed, pre-coaching strategies and guidance provided by schools play a large factor in students' awareness of their strengths and weaknesses. Also, setting goals may make the desired changes more difficult; however, the participants rediscovered their inclination and satisfaction with what they have pursued now, which motivated them to continue.

Abstract:Career decision-making is arguably at its most complex within professions where work is precarious and career calling is strong. This article reports from a study that examined the career decision-making of creative industries workers, for whom career decisions can impact psychological well-being and identity just as much as they impact individuals’ work and career. The respondents were 693 creative industries workers who used a largely open-ended survey to create in-depth reflections on formative moments and career decision-making. Analysis involved the theoretical model of self-authorship, which provides a way of understanding how people employ their sense of self to make meaning of their experiences. The self-authorship process emerged as a complex, non-linear and consistent feature of career decision-making. Theoretical contributions include a non-linear view of self-authorship that exposes the authorship of visible and covert multiple selves prompted by both proactive and reactive identity work.

Abstract:Prior to entering the workforce, engineering students are expected to be highly skilled and contribute to decision-making with confidence in their abilities. Despite this, most students are lacking in these areas. Engineering students typically have a hard time finding work because they lack the necessary skills and are unable to take decisions with confidence. Accordingly, the Washington accord created job-ready features for engineering students that contain core knowledge and design (FKD), project management and finance (PMF), communication (C), modern tool use (MTU), teamwork (TW), engineers' society and environment (ESE), ethics (E), and lifetime learning (LL). Work readiness (WR) literature will be examined in this study in an effort to promote decision-making self-efficacy (DMSE), which in turn leads to more successful career exploration (CE). Career discovery is then examined as a two-step process, with work readiness influencing decision-making self-efficacy and decision-making self-efficacy influencing career exploration. Malaysian private engineering universities were surveyed using a quantitative way to acquire the data. Results found a strong correlation between work readiness and decision-making self-efficacy, according to scientific evidence. Decision-making self-efficacy was also found to have a significant impact on career exploration. This study is to be useful to curtail unemployment by adopting the required skill set, which will help universities to produce engineers who are able to contribute to decision making with confidence towards exploring their careers. Overall, the results of this study might provide significant information to the related institutions and policymakers on the scarcity of decision-making of talented engineering students in Malaysia.

Abstract:The landscape of graduate science education is changing as efforts to diversify the professoriate have increased because academic faculty jobs at universities have grown scarce and more competitive. With this context as a backdrop, the present research examines the perceptions and career goals of advisors and advisees through surveys of PhD students (Study 1, N = 195) and faculty mentors (Study 2, N = 272) in science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines. Study 1 examined actual preferences and career goals of PhD students among three options: research careers, teaching careers, and non-academic careers in industry, and compared the actual preferences of students with what they perceived as being the normative preferences of faculty. Overall, students had mixed preferences but perceived that their advisors had a strong normative preference for research careers for them. Moreover, students who ranked research positions as most desirable felt the most belonging in their academic departments. Further analyses revealed no differences in career preferences as a function of underrepresented minority (URM) student status or first-generation (FG) status, but URM and FG students felt less belonging in their academic departments. Study 2 examined faculty preferences for different careers for their advisees, both in general and for current students in particular. While faculty advisors preferred students to go into research in general, when focusing on specific students, they saw their preferences as being closely aligned with the career preference of each PhD student. Faculty advisors did not perceive any difference in belonging between their students as a function of their URM status. Discrepancies between student and faculty perceptions may occur, in part, because faculty and students do not engage in sufficient discussions about the wider range of career options beyond academic research. Supporting this possibility, PhD students and faculty advisors reported feeling more comfortable discussing research careers with each other than either non-academic industry positions or teaching positions. Discussion centers on the implications of these findings for interpersonal and institutional efforts to foster diversity in the professoriate and to create open communication about career development.

Abstract:College students increasingly use digital information resources to help them make academic and career decisions, but the effects of digital information tools on students' career exploration outcomes are not well understood. We investigate the impact of an online tool that shows the full sequence of course enrollments and the first career destination of recent graduates with matched interests. We conducted a randomized controlled experiment with 234 undergraduate students at a U.S. university to examine the tool's impact on students' career exploration outcomes, specifically their self-efficacy in academic planning for career exploration and behavioral intentions for career exploration. We did not find clear evidence that the tool increased students' self-efficacy and behavioral intentions. However, our exploratory analysis shows that the tool benefited students who were at a later stage in their career decision-making process. We also found that students' awareness of official information sources from archival student records and awareness of holistic information that combines academic and career decisions are important predictors of self-efficacy and behavioral intentions. Abstract:Faced with tremendous employment pressure, how to enhance effective career exploration and career adaptability is crucial for college students’ career. This study uses self-assessed data from 840 undergraduate students at three time points to reveal the formation mechanism of career adaptability from a dual perspective of teacher support and students’ effective part-time behavior. In particular, the mediating role of career exploration is introduced based on self-regulation theory, and the moderating role of teacher support and students’ effective part-time work is introduced based on social cognitive career theory. The results show that (1) Future work self-salience positively influences career adaptability; (2) future work self-salience indirectly influences career adaptability through career exploration; (3) both teacher support and students’ effective part-time behavior positively moderate the indirect relationship between future work self-salience and career adaptability through career exploration. This study attempts to provide practical guidance for college graduates to engage in career exploration and career construction.
