Abstract:In the context of a classroom lesson, concepts must be visualized and organized in many ways depending on the needs of the teacher and students. Traditional presentation media such as the blackboard or electronic whiteboard allow for static hand-drawn images, and slideshow software may be used to generate linear sequences of text and pre-animated images. However, none of these media support the creation of dynamic visualizations that can be manipulated, combined, or re-animated in real-time, and so demonstrating new concepts or adapting to changes in the requirements of a presentation is a challenge. Thus, we propose Chalktalk as a solution. Chalktalk is an open-source presentation and visualization tool in which the user's drawings are recognized as animated and interactive "sketches," which the user controls via mouse gestures. Sketches help users demonstrate and experiment with complex ideas (e.g. computer graphics, procedural animation, logic) during a live presentation without needing to create and structure all content ahead of time. Because sketches can interoperate and be programmed to represent underlying data in multiple ways, Chalktalk presents the opportunity to visualize key concepts in computer science: especially data structures, whose data and form change over time due to the variety of interactions within a computer system. To show Chalktalk's capabilities, we have prototyped sketch implementations for binary search tree (BST) and stack (LIFO) data structures, which take advantage of sketches' ability to interact and change at run-time. We discuss these prototypes and conclude with considerations for future research using the Chalktalk platform.

Abstract:In busy clinical environments, educational opportunities must be designed to accommodate learner-specific needs. Many adult learners prefer short, relevant, technology-enhanced learning. As such, electronic learning (e-learning) experiences have become a prominent part of medical education. Yet, there remain challenges to e-learning experiences in the current educational landscape. To address these challenges, the authors developed the TinyTalks paradigm, which serves as the educational foundation for the TinyTalks curriculum.The TinyTalks paradigm was developed using the existing e-learning literature and foundational principles of adult learning and related theories. The TinyTalks paradigm includes 3 ground rules: (1) all TinyTalks videos must identify a category (approach to, explanation of, or application of) to clarify the focus of the topic, (2) all TinyTalks videos must be less than 7 minutes with all material presented on one virtual chalkboard screen, and (3) all TinyTalks videos must use the hook, frame, and delivery model, which guides the creation of the video. The resulting TinyTalks curriculum is an online repository of short, chalk talk-style educational videos, developed by interdisciplinary health professionals and targeted to the level of trainees, that is available to be used flexibly by learners for just-in-time learning, flipped classroom sessions, and/or self-study.The authors used Kern's 6-step approach to curriculum development as the conceptual framework for the development and implementation of the TinyTalks curriculum at Mass General for Children (June 2021-January 2023). While developing and implementing the curriculum, the authors focused on topic selection, stakeholder recruitment, establishing a process flow, and creating a virtual home.The authors believe the TinyTalks paradigm outlines an effective educational strategy that accommodates the unique needs of both learners and teachers in the medical education setting. The next steps are to scale the TinyTalks curriculum up by expanding the content library and to evaluate its efficacy.

Abstract:In the spring of 2023, stirred by reports that AI was radically transforming the writing industry (and "creating an epidemic of cheating"), I taught my Department of English senior capstone students how to use ChatGPT to write grants. In this brief write-up, I describe my rationale for teaching about the AI (to get students jobs); how it can fit into writing studies best practices (e.g., process pedagogy); ways to create assignments that might limit its use (localization and contextualization); as well as a few fast and messy activities and student process examples that evolved over thesemester. The students chose to offer their writing using a first name only and a pseudonym.

Abstract:Introduction: Trainees and faculty in academic medicine often struggle with self-promotion. Barriers may be more formidable for women and other groups underrepresented in medicine. Experience-based stories illustrating personal strengths are preferable when engaging in self-promotion activities. Methods: We developed a 90- to 120-minute workshop utilizing approaches such as iterative journaling and peer discussion to teach the development of problem-action-result (PAR) stories for self-promotion efforts in interviews and written applications to new positions. Participants provided Likert-scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) and free-response evaluations, which we analyzed for workshop strengths and areas for improvement. Results: We presented the workshop in person to 28 pediatric residents and subsequently to 22 residents, fellows, and faculty at an in-person national meeting. Sixty-one percent of the resident group and 100% of the national workshop group completed the evaluation. Both groups reported high satisfaction with the workshop's format (M = 4.7) and content (M = 4.7) and indicated intention to use the skills learned (M = 4.7). Strengths included the PAR format, interactivity, journaling, opportunity for reflection, and tips for interviewing and writing. Areas to improve included offering the workshop earlier in the academic year and providing more written examples of PAR stories. Discussion: This workshop used strategies of personal reflection, journaling, and peer feedback to help participants understand behavior-based recruiting practices and the PAR framework as a strategy for successful self-promotion. Learners can use these strategies to develop greater confidence and efficacy and to address barriers to effective self-promotion they encounter.

Abstract:Managing the “fuzzy front-end” (FFE) of new product development (NPD) is critical for NPD success. To simulate this reality, we tasked self-selecting undergraduate teams of four to six students with developing a substantially innovative new product concept. Integrating Vygotskian and Piagetian perspectives on social constructivism and experiential learning, we designed an authentic assessment pushing students into the FFE of NPD, featuring a live pitch to an expert industry panel. Pre-and-post survey results suggest students prefer authentic assessment infused with real-world learning experiences such as the pitch. Encouragingly, students perceived less usefulness over time for animate (e.g., teaching staff) and inanimate (e.g., textbooks) resources, indicating increased reliance on oneself post-assessment. Qualitative characteristics noted by students were group work, academic success, and the degree of challenge. Our approach is relevant for educators seeking to infuse their teaching—and enthuse students—with authentic assessment, addressing limitations of teacher-centered andragogy.

Abstract:Typical business communication courses provide significantly more opportunities for students to hone their skills in writing compared with speaking. This article outlines an impromptu speech assignment and explains a course-level strategy for providing each student with more than 30 significant speaking opportunities during a term. This approach has proven to be surprisingly popular as students observe a remarkable transformation in their confidence and competence with presentational speaking. Teaching strategies, assignment guidelines, results, and additional resources are presented.

Abstract:Conversational agents promise conversational interaction but fail to deliver. Efforts often emulate functional rules from human speech, without considering key characteristics that conversation must encapsulate. Given its potential in supporting long-term human-agent relationships, it is paramount that HCI focuses efforts on delivering this promise. We aim to understand what people value in conversation and how this should manifest in agents. Findings from a series of semi-structured interviews show people make a clear dichotomy between social and functional roles of conversation, emphasising the long-term dynamics of bond and trust along with the importance of context and relationship stage in the types of conversations they have. People fundamentally questioned the need for bond and common ground in agent communication, shifting to more utilitarian definitions of conversational qualities. Drawing on these findings we discuss key challenges for conversational agent design, most notably the need to redefine the design parameters for conversational agent interaction.

Abstract:Introduction: There is increasing recognition that incoming interns benefit from formal training in teaching skills during UME. Many medical schools have capstone courses well suited for teacher-training content. Mini chalk talks (MCTs) are a common clinical teaching modality requiring a variety of teaching skills. We developed a session for our institution's capstone course in which students prepared and delivered MCTs. Methods: The voluntary flipped classroom session was offered virtually in 2021 and in person in 2022. Before the session, students reviewed materials on creating effective MCTs and developed and practiced their own MCT. During the 90-minute session, students presented their MCT to a group of students in the same or similar future specialties and received feedback from their peers and a facilitator. Results: Twenty-six percent of graduating students (95 of 370) in 16 specialties participated. Students had a statistically significant increase in confidence delivering effective MCTs (p < .01). On a 5-point Likert scale (1 = did not learn, 5 = a great amount), students' mean ratings of clinical knowledge and teaching skills gained from the session were 4.4 and 4.5, respectively. Qualitative feedback highlighted the benefits of receiving feedback on teaching (31 of 77 respondents, 40%), practicing teaching skills (21 of 77, 27%), and experiencing other students' MCTs (13 of 77, 17%). Discussion: Our MCT session provides a versatile, resource-efficient method of supporting students in transitioning to the role of resident educators. It also offers them an opportunity to receive valuable feedback on their teaching in a low-stakes environment.

Abstract:We've all heard how academia evaluates our work: papers, papers, and... more papers. While academic publishing is an essential part of disseminating research results, it is only one activity amongst many that make up a career (or for that matter, a life). The following essay is based on an invited talk for the NSF AAPF Symposium, given at the 2018 Winter AAS Meeting. Here, as in the original talk, I offer some practical advice for thinking about one's work within the larger frame of your personal values and goals. While I will draw examples from my own career, I hope to offer readers guidance in articulating what is important to them, aligning their career choices with those values, and establishing metrics that go beyond the h-index.

Abstract:In 2001, the ACS reported, “The Ph.D. in chemistry usually prepares individuals for careers in basic research. The degree does not typically prepare these highly skilled research professionals to be faculty members.†In 2004, a report of a workshop held at NSF noted that “the purpose of the postdoctoral experience should … prepare postdocs for professional careers that are not solely as faculty members at research-intensive universities.†For the past 10 years the UCLA Chemistry and Biochemistry department has addressed these issues through a Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) course for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars. To assess the long-term impact of the course, a questionnaire was sent to 91 people with whom we still had contact information and who had participated in the program between 1994 and 2002. From the 41% response rate, 86% (32) identified themselves as being in academic positions from the full range of types of higher education institutions. The survey revealed that all components of the seminar were helpful for the academic recruitment process and that some aspects continued to be useful for the respondents in their current faculty positions.
