Abstract:Scientific presentations, usually given with slide presentation software such as PowerPoint™, are the most common method for disseminating knowledge to students and peers. Unfortunately, many are boring, text-heavy, and bullet point-riddled data dumps, with animations or cartoons that obscure or distract rather than clarify the message. These presentations, which we have all sat through and/or delivered, are often so dull that they are referred to as "death by PowerPoint™." In this paper, the authors intend to impart basic techniques for organizing and communicating information in the most effective, engaging, and actionable ways possible. We focus on three processes: generating ideas and outlining a talk, creating visually appealing uncluttered slides, and delivering an inspiring, practice-changing presentation. We also discuss considerations for a virtual presentation. We believe that even experienced speakers could benefit from reflecting on these recommendations and editing their slide presentations for clarity and simplicity.

This monologic approach faces challenges and limited results as demonstrated by the education literature on active learning. In response to this research, this practitioner article explores the nature and effective execution of five universal Audience Engagement Techniques that provide opportunities for a speaker to turn their passively listening audience into active participants in a dialogue. Practical and theoretical implications of Audience Engagement Techniques generally are also discussed.

Abstract:Communication is essential for the advancement of Science. Technology advances and the proliferation of personal devices have changed the ways in which people communicate in all aspects of life. Scientific communication has also been profoundly affected by such changes, and thus it is important to reflect on effective ways to communicate scientific results to scientists that are flooded with information. This article advocates for receiver-oriented communication in Science, discusses how effective oral presentations should be prepared and delivered, provides advice on the thought process that can lead to scientific papers that communicate effectively, discusses suitable methodology to produce experimental data that is relevant and offers advice on how to present such data in ways that lead to the formulation of correct claims that are supported by the data.

Abstract:This article offers a trainee's perspective on how conferences can be better crafted to support emerging researchers, using the Canadian Society for Immunology (CSI) as a model. We hope this opinion piece evokes discussions about the actions organizing committees can take to foster the development of the next generation of scientists during conferences. Attending and presenting at conferences is a preeminent experience during scientific training. This article provides a trainee's perspective on strategies to promote trainee growth before, during and after scientific meetings, taking the initiatives implemented by the Canadian Society for Immunology (CSI) as an example. A foremost action was the establishment of the Trainee Engagement Committee (TEC) in 2020. The TEC members contribute to the annual symposia by participating in the local organizing committee meetings and organizing trainee‐directed events. We propose actions that conference organizers can take to foster the development of the next generation of scientists. In addition, we offer advice to conference presenters on how to craft talks with trainees in mind and to attendees on how to maximize the quality and longevity of conference interactions. We hope this opinion piece evokes reflections and discussions among scientific societies, organizing committees, conference presenters and trainees alike.

Abstract:A good scientific poster should capture the interest and imagination of the viewer and the overall aim should be to make the target audience want to know more about the topic. A well prepared poster will speak for itself and significantly aid the presenter in sharing the findings of their work. It can often lead to new and exciting collaborative opportunities. Although a well presented poster cannot make up for poor data, a poorly presented poster can lessen the impact of the work and cause it to be overlooked. This article emphasises some of the considerations that need to be borne in mind to make a poster scientifically valid, have visual impact and be attractive to the viewer. The key points are brevity, clarity, neatness and readability.

Abstract:The practice of oncology continues to evolve over time. Educators find themselves in a position where they are no longer able to teach a topic in its entirety. Moreover, the rapid expansion of information available through research and discovery in the field of oncology makes it difficult for learners to process the constant barrage of new content. Lecturers continue to impart knowledge using didactic techniques, often trying to include as much material as possible in the time permitted. The question becomes: In the face of an impossibly large field, how can one assist learners in learning, and retaining, what is most important? The science of learning continues to develop, and we now recognize that there are ways to teach that optimally facilitate the retention and application of knowledge. By using these strategies, educators can make it easier for learners to absorb and retain key information. This article will touch upon several such techniques: cognitive load optimization, analogy, contrasting cases, elaboration, and just-in-time telling. By applying these methods to didactic presentations, educators can ensure that their lessons are heard, understood, and ultimately transformed into something unforgettable.

Abstract:Background: Presentation at scientific conferences requires skills that may not be familiar among faculty members. Objective: To assess the knowledge and perceptions of faculty members before and after attending a workshop on making effective presentations at scientific conferences. Methodology: This was an intervention study among 31 faculty members who attended a workshop in April 2023. Data were collected using a Microsoft form. Results: Results: Eighteen (58.1%) carried first aid kits while travelling for conferences. Majority of the participants felt that the interaction with the audience was better in onsite conferences than in online conferences. Majority of them preferred oral presentations to reach a wider audience. Less than 10% of the participants indulged in post-conference activities. Self-perceived confidence level in attending conferences and self-perceived knowledge regarding activities to be performed before, during, and after attending conferences were reported to significantly improve (p<0.001) after attending the workshop by the participants. The median knowledge score of the participants in the pre-test was 12, IQR (11, 16), and in the post-test was 15, IQR (14, 18) (Z=3.422, p=0.001). Conclusion: The workshop was found to increase the participants’ knowledge and confidence level in essential aspects of conference presentations. Hence more such training programs are required among health care professionals.

Additional viewers tune-in to the same presentation through their iPhone screens, likewise mesmerized by the rhythm of the speech. The use of a captivating tone, open body language, and consistent eye contact has seemingly been perfected by individuals such as Steve Jobs and Barack Obama, each an example of a masterful public speaker. Their on-stage charisma and eloquence keep the audience enthralled.

Abstract:Healthcare professionals frequently communicate complex medical information among colleagues and students. This paper aims to determine gaps in healthcare professionals' presentation skills and identify barriers to improving. Eighty-eight individuals at a Midwest Academic Medical Center completed a survey that consisted of three parts: (1) respondents' current presentation slide deck, (2) respondents' perceptions of their current presentation skills, and (3) barriers to and motivations for improving their presentation skills. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect and analyze data. Respondents used bullet points and text the most (74%), and videos the least in their presentations (51%). When assessing respondents' perceptions of their current presentation skills, they rated themselves the lowest as a storyteller (median = 6/10) and as an overall presenter (median = 6/10). The biggest barrier reported was "lack of training on best practices" (58%). Respondents reported "interested in improving" and "enhance opportunities" as their main motivations for improving presentation skills. Four themes emerged from the open-ended survey items: Practical tips and best practices, Ability to communicate effectively, Professional development, and Practice opportunities. Effective presentation skills should be included in every healthcare professionals faculty development curriculum. This is especially crucial for junior faculty members to ensure their continued success.

Abstract:In the paper "Constructively Aligned Instructional Design for Oral Presentations," the authors explore the implementation and outcomes of the 'General, Particular Specific' (GPS) model as a framework for curriculum instructional design for oral presentations within STEM education at an R1 Polytechnic University. Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of the 'General, Particular Specific' (GPS) model on the enhancement of constructive alignment in curriculum instructional design for oral presentations in STEM education to improve students' oral communication skills and their effectiveness in technical communication. Theoretical Framework: Constructive alignment, curriculum-based Assessment, and curriculum and instructional design stand out, providing a solid basis for understanding the context of the investigation. The literature includes foundational texts on marketing management, center-based engineering research, Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives, and the principles of enhancing teaching through constructive alignment. Additionally, it acknowledges the multifaceted nature of instructional design, emphasizing the widespread adoption of the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), showcasing a structured, comprehensive approach to educational planning and execution. Method: The methodology adopted for this research comprises a qualitative study design, utilizing case study approaches within the Humanities and Social Science department at an R1 Polytechnic University. Data was collected through classroom observations, instructor interviews, and analysis of student presentation outcomes before and after implementing the GPS model. Results and Discussion: The results revealed significant improvements in students' abilities to think critically about content alignment with audience expectations and effectively communicate technical information. In the discussion section, these results are contextualized in light of the theoretical framework, underscoring the effectiveness of the GPS model in fostering clear, explicit instruction and scaffolding in oral presentation skills. The study acknowledges possible limitations, including its scope within a single institution and the need for broader empirical validation. Research Implications: This research's practical and theoretical implications are discussed, providing insights into how the results can be applied or influence practices in STEM education. These implications could encompass curriculum development, pedagogical strategies, and enhancing communication skills in STEM fields. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the originality of applying the GPS model within the context of oral presentation instruction, marking a significant shift from traditional, less structured approaches to a more scaffolded and constructively aligned methodology. The relevance and value of this research are evidenced by its potential to impact pedagogical practices, particularly in enhancing the oral presentation capabilities of STEM students, thereby addressing a critical gap in STEM education and communication training.

Abstract:Public speaking is an essential skill in everyone's professional or academic career. Nevertheless, honing this skill is often tricky because training in front of a mirror does not give feedback or inspire the same anxiety as present-ing in front of an audience. Further, most people do not always have access to the place where the presentation will happen. In this research, we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) environment to assist in improving people's presentation skills. Our system uses 3D scanned people to create more realistic scenarios. We conducted a study with twelve participants who had no prior experience with VR. We validated our virtual environment by analyzing whether it was preferred to no VR system and accepted regardless of the existence of a virtual audience. Our results show that users overwhelmingly prefer to use the VR system as a tool to help them improve their public speaking skills than training in an empty environment. However, the preference for an audience is mixed.

Abstract:Oral presentation is a popular type of assessment in undergraduate degree programs. However, presentation delivery and grading pose considerable challenges to students and faculty alike. For the former, many students who learn English as an additional language may fear giving oral presentations in English due to a lack of confidence. For the latter, faculty who teach multiple classes and have many students may find it difficult to spend adequate time helping students refine their communication skills. This study examines an AI-assisted presentation platform that was built to offer students more opportunities for presentation training without the need for faculty intervention. Surveys with students and teachers were conducted to inform the design of the platform. After a preliminary platform was developed, two methods were employed to evaluate its reliability: a beta test with 24 students and a comparison of AI and human scoring of the presentation performance of 36 students. It was found that students are highly receptive to the platform, but there are noticeable differences between AI and human scoring abilities. The results reveal some limitations of AI and human raters, and emphasize the potential benefit of exploring collaborative AI–human intelligence.

Abstract:Objectives: Posters are a common way to present results of a statistical analysis, program evaluation, or other project at professional conferences. Often, researchers fail to recognize the unique nature of the format, which is a hybrid of a published paper and an oral presentation. This methods note demonstrates how to design research posters to convey study objectives, methods, findings, and implications effectively to varied professional audiences. Methods: A review of existing literature on research communication and poster design is used to identify and demonstrate important considerations for poster content and layout. Guidelines on how to write about statistical methods, results, and statistical significance are illustrated with samples of ineffective writing annotated to point out weaknesses, accompanied by concrete examples and explanations of improved presentation. A comparison of the content and format of papers, speeches, and posters is also provided. Findings: Each component of a research poster about a quantitative analysis should be adapted to the audience and format, with complex statistical results translated into simplified charts, tables, and bulleted text to convey findings as part of a clear, focused story line. Conclusions: Effective research posters should be designed around two or three key findings with accompanying handouts and narrative description to supply additional technical detail and encourage dialog with poster viewers.

Abstract:Abstract. Classroom oral presentation is one of the techniques that has been used in any language classroom to provide an opportunity for language practice. This research investigates EFL students' challenges in classroom oral presentation and their strategies to face the challenges. The presentations covered group and individual presentations. Using a qualitative research approach and a descriptive design, authors collected data through in-dept interviews. Participants were four students of the English department of one private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, who had multiple experiences performing oral presentations in the classrooms that they had been attending for at least three years. The study found nervousness, group dynamics, audience, missing points, challenging content, language boundaries, and high self-expectation as the challenges the participants faced in classroom oral presentations. In addition, the study also discovered that strategies used to overcome the challenges were self-assurance, better preparation, peer discussions, directed eye contact, direct communication, backups, self-isolation, and presentation aids use. The implication is that in EFL classroom contexts, all factors surrounding the students might play a part in the way students view their experience and their success in an oral presentations. It also implied that eventually, students will have the ability to utilize the resources around them to solve their issues in an oral presentation. This gives an insight to how teachers can provide the environment that enables students to independently solve their problems. Public speaking training in front of a supportive audience in Virtual Reality improves performance in real-life

Abstract:Public speaking is a challenging task that requires practice. Virtual Reality allows to present realistic public speaking scenarios in this regard, however, the role of the virtual audience during practice remains unknown. In the present study, 73 participants completed a Virtual Reality practice session while audience was manipulated to be supportive or unsupportive or presentations were practiced without audience. Importantly, following the virtual practice, participants held the presentation during a real university course via Zoom. We measured emotional experience, self-efficacy, and the subjective evaluation of performance at baseline, after VR practice, and after the real presentation. Additionally, participants' performance in the real presentation was evaluated by instructors (blinded to condition). Supportive in contrast to unsupportive audiences led to more positive believes about one's own performance, while there were no changes in beliefs in the group without audience. Importantly, practice in front of a supportive compared to unsupportive audience resulted in a more positive evaluation of speaker confidence in real-life public speaking as rated by the instructors. These results demonstrate an impact of virtual social feedback during public speaking on subsequent subjective performance evaluation. This may increase self-confidence resulting in actual improved public speaking performance in real-life.

Abstract:Both scientists and the public would benefit from improved communication of basic scientific research and from integrating scientists into education outreach, but opportunities to support these efforts are limited. We have developed two low-cost programs--"Present Your PhD Thesis to a 12-Year-Old" and "Shadow a Scientist"--that combine training in science communication with outreach to area middle schools. We assessed the outcomes of these programs and found a 2-fold benefit: scientists improve their communication skills by explaining basic science research to a general audience, and students' enthusiasm for science and their scientific knowledge are increased. Here we present details about both programs, along with our assessment of them, and discuss the feasibility of exporting these programs to other universities.
