Abstract:Summary: Since high-throughput techniques became a staple in biological science laboratories, computational algorithms, and scientific software have boomed. However, the development of bioinformatics software usually lacks software development quality standards. The resulting software code is hard to test, reuse, and maintain. We believe that the root of inefficiency in implementing the best software development practices in academic settings is the individualistic approach, which has traditionally been the norm for recognizing scientific achievements and, by extension, for developing specialized software. Software development is a collective effort in most software-heavy endeavors. Indeed, the literature suggests teamwork directly impacts code quality through knowledge sharing, collective software development, and established coding standards. In our computational biology research groups, we sustainably involve all group members in learning, sharing, and discussing software development while maintaining the personal ownership of research projects and related software products. We found that group members involved in this endeavor improved their coding skills, became more efficient bioinformaticians, and obtained detailed knowledge about their peers' work, triggering new collaborative projects. We strongly advocate for improving software development culture within bioinformatics through collective effort in computational biology groups or institutes with three or more bioinformaticians. Abstract:As an alternative to traditional laser cutting, we present LaserLeast, a fabrication-oriented design system that produce 3D objects using a laser cutter to bridge the gaps in prototyping from software to hardware and further evoke energy-and resource-saving consciousness in rapid manufacturing context. The key idea behind our system is that it employs a line-based strategy to improve the original workflow at the 2D output arrangement stage by using two shapes sharing one cutting line, and create a line-based workflow without a 3D modeling stage using three customizable components (line shape, 2.5D technique, and assemble plug). We compare LaserLeast with the traditional strategy with two use cases to address the advantages and limitations and show that LaserLeast has the potential to stimulate the creativity of product designers and the human computer interaction community to enhance productivity in both design and laser cutting through the Internet.

Abstract:Contemporary IT project teams engage in creative problem solving to address increasingly complex business problems, which highlights the need to promote IT project team creativity. Collaboration technologies are widely used in IT project teams, but little is known about what collaboration technology features can be used to improve IT project team creativity and the underlying influencing mechanisms. To address this important gap, the current study builds on the extended team knowledge framework to identify collaboration technology features and decodes their influencing mechanisms on IT project team creativity by drawing on the novel creative synthesis theory originating in the management literature to the IT project team context. We identify three sets of collaboration technology support features, that of awareness knowledge supports, long-term knowledge supports, and transitional knowledge supports, and posit that their use can improve IT project team creativity via facilitating the creative synthesis process which includes three sub-constructs of collective attention, similarity building, and enacting ideas. The research model is supported in general by empirical data collected through a multi-sourced survey of over 500 team members and their leaders from 62 IT project teams. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Fireteam: a Small-Team Development Practice in Industry

Abstract:Software development is a collective undertaking, and the team’s efficiency is critical in development. In order to reduce project management overheads and improve productivity, a global information and communication technology enterprise institutionalizes an organization wide small-team practice, called fireteams, to tackle the problems arising from human and social aspects, such as amicability, talent, skill, and communications. This paper reports a mixed-method research, which combines archive analysis, interviews and survey, to empirically investigate the characteristics and impacts of fireteam in this industrial setting. We identify three categories of fireteam in terms of its demonstrated characteristics: ordinary agile team with extensions, single-function team, and entire life-cycle team; elaborate four key activities of fireteam, i.e. team formation, maintenance, communication, and meeting. Less communication and management overheads, higher agility & concurrency, and improved personal ability are the three important contributors that increase the productivity of fireteams. Whereas management & leadership effort, divergent understanding of fireteam, and self-organized team are discovered as the three major problems associated with fireteams. Although the benefits of fireteam can be observed from its adoption, this practice does not achieve the enterprise’s anticipations very well. Some considerations and recommendations are also discussed to improve this small-team practice.
Online Communication for Team Creativity in Tech Companies: Barriers and Tool Design.

Abstract:Teams in tech companies collaboratively solve creative problems, and this team creative process increasingly occurs online. Despite many innovative tool designs to support collaborative creativity, many teams did not adopt them. This study aimed to identify the barriers to adoption and teams’ needs for collaborative creativity support. We clarified the team creative process in practice by individual in-depth interviews with 15 employees in 12 different high-tech companies in China. The results suggested that the teams frequently shared information via communication tools or face to face, and many of them acknowledged the benefits of collaboration in team creativity. However, most of them ideated and evaluated ideas or solutions individually. The reasons for the low collaboration level included the features of their tasks, a lack of technical and managerial support for collaboration in the ideation and evaluation phase, and a lack of motivation for team creativity. Based on these findings, we outlined implications for designing tools to support team creativity and demonstrated a prototype of a communication tool with creative support features.

Abstract:Remote work settings have significantly increased in the current product development landscape. This change requires a reassessment of the operational, communication, and collaborative methodologies of cross-functional teams in order to guarantee successful product results. It is crucial to optimise these teams in distant environments in order to sustain production, creativity, and cohesiveness. This study investigates methods and optimal approaches to improve the effectiveness of cross-functional teams involved in remote product development.The first part analyses the distinct obstacles encountered by cross-functional teams operating remotely, such as deficiencies in communication, disparities in time zones, and the possibility of diminished team unity. This underscores the need of developing explicit procedures for virtual communication, including frequent video conferences, asynchronous updates, and collaborative platforms that enable immediate interactions and exchange of documents. This research subsequently examines the function of technology in enhancing the efficiency of distant cross-functional teams. It underscores the importance of implementation of strong project management tools and platforms that facilitate the monitoring of tasks, allocation of resources, and management of milestones. In addition, the use of sophisticated communication technologies, including as video conferencing, instant messaging, and virtual whiteboards, being explored as a method to improve immediate cooperation and collaborative problem-solving.

Abstract:The global workforce has witnessed a transformative shift towards remote work arrangements, accelerated by advancements in digital technology and the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This paradigm shift has necessitated a reevaluation of traditional workplace dynamics and a greater emphasis on leveraging digital tools to facilitate remote work. With the traditional office setting no longer the norm, organizations are increasingly turning to virtual collaboration platforms, communication tools, and digital solutions to enable remote work. The rise of remote work presents both opportunities and challenges for organizations. On one hand, it offers employees greater flexibility, reduces overhead costs associated with maintaining physical office spaces, and enables access to a wider talent pool. On the other hand, remote work can lead to feelings of isolation, communication barriers, and challenges in maintaining employee engagement and productivity. Employee engagement is not just about satisfaction with the job; it's about fostering a deep connection at the emotional between employees and their work and the organization they belong to. It encompasses enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment towards organizational goals, reflecting a sense of purpose and belonging within the company. As the modern workplace undergoes a seismic shift towards remote work arrangements, maintaining and nurturing this emotional connection poses a significant challenge. Remote work offers undeniable benefits, including flexibility and cost advantages, yet it also introduces unique hurdles to sustaining employee engagement. One such challenge is the preservation of a strong team spirit across geographically dispersed members. Without the physical proximity of a traditional office, communication can become fragmented, hindering team cohesion and leaving individuals feeling isolated and uninformed. Moreover, the absence of face-to-face interactions can obscure recognition of accomplishments, leading to diminished morale and motivation among remote workers. However, the digital landscape provides an array of tools to address these challenges and cultivate a thriving remote team environment. Communication platforms, such as chat features, video conferencing, and instant messaging, bridge the geographical divide, facilitating seamless interaction and information sharing among team members. Abstract:Organizations have a variety of options to help their software developers become their most productive selves, from modifying office layouts, to investing in better tools, to cleaning up the source code. But which options will have the biggest impact? Drawing from the literature in software engineering and industrial/organizational psychology to identify factors that correlate with productivity, we designed a survey that asked 622 developers across 3 companies about these productivity factors and about self-rated productivity. Our results suggest that the factors that most strongly correlate with self-rated productivity were non-technical factors, such as job enthusiasm, peer support for new ideas, and receiving useful feedback about job performance. Compared to other knowledge workers, our results also suggest that software developers’ self-rated productivity is more strongly related to task variety and ability to work remotely.

Abstract:Tool automation to reduce manual effort has been an active research area in various sub fields of software engineering such as software testing and analysis. To maximize the value of software testing and analysis, effective support for cooperation between engineers and tools is greatly needed and yet lacking in state-of-the-art research and practice. In particular, testing and analysis are in a great need of (1) effective ways for engineers to communicate their testing or analysis goals and guidance to tools and (2) tools with strong enough capabilities to accomplish the given testing or analysis goals and with effective ways to communicate challenges faced by them to engineers -- enabling a feedback loop between engineers and tools to refine and accomplish the testing or analysis goals. In addition, different tools have their respective strengths and weaknesses, and there is also a great need of allowing these tools to cooperate with each other. Similarly, there is a great need of allowing engineers (or even users) to cooperate to help tools such as in the form of crowd sourcing. A new research frontier on synergistic co operations between humans and tools, tools and tools, and humans and humans is yet to be explored. This paper presents recent example advances on cooperative testing and analysis.

Abstract:Modern software developers rely on an extensive set of social media tools and communication channels. The adoption of team communication platforms has led to the emergence of conversation-based tools and integrations, many of which are chatbots. Understanding how software developers manage their complex constellation of collaborators in conjunction with the practices and tools they use can bring valuable insights into socio-technical collaborative work in software development and other knowledge work domains. In this paper, we explore how chatbots can help reduce the friction points software developers face when working collaboratively. Using a socio-technical model for collaborative work, we identify three main areas for conflict: friction stemming from team interactions with each other, an individual's interactions with technology, and team interactions with technology. Finally, we provide a set of open questions for discussion within the research community.

Abstract:Computational and data-enabled science and engineering are revolutionizing advances throughout science and society, at all scales of computing. For example, teams in the U.S. DOE Exascale Computing Project have been tackling new frontiers in modeling, simulation, and analysis by exploiting unprecedented exascale computing capabilities-building an advanced software ecosystem that supports next-generation applications and addresses disruptive changes in computer architectures. However, concerns are growing about the productivity of the developers of scientific software, its sustainability, and the trustworthiness of the results that it produces. Members of the IDEAS project serve as catalysts to address these challenges through fostering software communities, incubating and curating methodologies and resources, and disseminating knowledge to advance developer productivity and software sustainability. This paper discusses how these synergistic activities are advancing scientific discovery-mitigating technical risks by building a firmer foundation for reproducible, sustainable science at all scales of computing, from laptops to clusters to exascale and beyond.

Abstract:This paper presents an empirical study on how self- organized software teams could attain high performance using agile and lean practices. In particular, the paper qualitatively examines characteristics of high performance and self- organization in one project team. The case under study is a customer-driven student project, carried out to develop an alpha-version prototype. The paper also studies how certain agile software practices aid in initialising self-organization in the team. The main results indicate that self-organization as supported by certain Agile and Lean practices helps teams in achieving higher performance.

A Software Engineering Capstone Course Facilitated By GitHub Templates

Abstract:How can instructors facilitate spreading out the work in a software engineering or computer science capstone course across time and among team members? Currently teams often compromise the quality of their learning experience by frantically working before each deliverable. Some team members further compromise their own learning, and that of their colleagues, by not contributing their fair share to the team effort. To mitigate these problems, we propose using a GitHub template that contains all the initial infrastructure a team needs, including the folder structure, text-based template documents and template issues. In addition, we propose each team begins the year by identifying specific quantifiable individual productivity metrics for monitoring, such as the count of meetings attended, issues closed and number of commits. Initial data suggests that these steps may have an impact. In 2022/23 we observed 24% of commits happening on the due dates. After partially introducing the above ideas in 2023/24, this number improved to 18%. To measure the fairness we introduce a fairness measure based on the disparity between number of commits between all pairs of teammates. Going forward we propose an experiment where commit data and interview data is compared between teams that use the proposed interventions and those that do not.

Abstract:A software system interacts with third-party libraries through various APIs. Insufficient documentation and constant refactorings of third-party libraries make API library reuse difficult and error prone. Using these library APIs often needs to follow certain usage patterns. These patterns aid developers in addressing commonly faced programming problems such as what checks should precede or follow API calls, how to use a given set of APIs for a given task, or what API method sequence should be used to obtain one object from another. Ordering rules (specifications) also exist between APIs, and these rules govern the secure and robust operation of the system using these APIs. These patterns and rules may not be well documented by the API developers. Furthermore, usage patterns and specifications might change with library refactorings, requiring changes in the software that reuse the library. To address these issues, we develop novel techniques (and their supporting tools) based on mining source code, assisting developers in productively reusing third party libraries to build reliable and secure software.
A comparative analysis of computer-aided design team performance with collaboration software

Abstract:For the past several years, the BYU CAD Lab has been developing collaborative computer-aided design (CAD) software. As this software is being developed, industry seeks to better understand the differences in performance between teams using multi-user CAD and single-user CAD to make informed decisions about implementing this new software into their engineering processes. In order to better understand the differences in performance between teams, an experimental study was conducted in which four multi-user teams and four single-user teams competed to create the best model of a hand drill. Key findings of this study were that multi-user CAD increases awareness of teammates’ activities as well as communication between team members. Performance, with respect to the metrics of quality and time for completion, could be improved with increased familiarity with the multi-user CAD software. Future research directions are suggested and discussed.

Abstract:Present-day software development faces three major challenges: complexity, time consumption, and high costs. Developing large software systems often requires battalions of teams and considerable time for meetings, which end without any action, resulting in unproductive cycles, delayed progress, and increased cost. What if, instead of large meetings with no immediate results, the software product is completed by the end of the meeting? In response, we present a vision for a system called TimeLess, designed to reshape the software development process by enabling immediate action during meetings. The goal is to shift meetings from planning discussions to productive, action-oriented sessions. This approach minimizes the time and effort required for development, allowing teams to focus on critical decision-making while AI agents execute development tasks based on the meeting discussions. We will employ multiple AI agents that work collaboratively to capture human discussions and execute development tasks in real time. This represents a step toward next-generation software development environments, where human expertise drives strategy and AI accelerates task execution.

Abstract:Software companies and startups often follow the idea of flourishing happiness among developers. Perks, playground rooms, free breakfast, remote office options, sports facilities near the companies, company retreats, you name it. The rationale is that happy developers should be more productive and also retained. But is it the case that happy software engineers are more productive? Moreover, are perks the way to go to make developers happy? Are developers happy at all? What are the consequences of unhappiness among software engineers? These questions are important to ask both from the perspective of productivity and from the perspective of sustainable software development and well-being in the workplace.
