Abstract:This paper presents a new method of eccentric magnetic-abrasive finishing as applied to 316 stainless steel. The proposed solution is based on solid ferromagnetic abrasive grains (Fe-Si) held by an external magnetic field. A workpiece fixed in a holder with a certain eccentricity is inserted between the grains and the holder is rotated. The use of an additional eccentricity has a significant impact on the nature of the process, in particular, it increases the speed of the sample relative to the abrasive grains, makes it possible to use more abrasive grains, induces mixing abrasive grains, which can prolong their active life time. In this study, a three-factor, five-level design of experiment was conducted. The variable parameters were: machining time, eccentric value, and rotational speed. Samples in the form of rollers with a diameter of 3 mm were mounted in a special holder that allowed to obtain the assumed eccentricity. Based on the results obtained, regression equations were developed for selected roughness parameters Ra, Rz, Rq, Rt. The value of Ra roughness decreased from the initial value of 0.575 μm to a value below 0.1 μm (an 80% decrease) in 9.1 min. The results obtained provided the basis for further research in conducting eccentricity in magnetic-abrasive machining as an intensifying element of the process.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the quality and efficiency of the surface finishing of 316 stainless steel. Specifically, the author proposes a new eccentric magnetic - abrasive finishing method, aiming to enhance the effect of traditional magnetic - abrasive finishing by introducing eccentric motion. ### Main problems: 1. **Improve surface quality**: Although traditional magnetic - abrasive finishing can achieve a relatively low surface roughness, in some cases, it has low efficiency and limited effect. In this paper, by introducing eccentric motion, an attempt is made to further reduce the surface roughness, especially parameters such as Ra, Rz, Rq and Rt. 2. **Improve processing efficiency**: By increasing the speed of the sample relative to the abrasive particles, using more abrasive particles, and inducing the mixing of abrasive particles, thereby prolonging their effective service life and improving processing efficiency. 3. **Optimize process parameters**: Through the design of experiment (DoE), the effects of processing time, eccentricity value and rotational speed on surface roughness are studied, and corresponding regression equations are developed to guide parameter selection in practical applications. ### Specific improvement measures: - **Eccentric motion**: By introducing an eccentric design in the fixture, the workpiece generates an eccentric motion during rotation, thereby increasing the relative speed between the workpiece and the abrasive particles. - **Mixing of abrasive particles**: The eccentric motion leads to better mixing of abrasive particles, improves the utilization rate of abrasive particles and prolongs their service life. - **Experimental design**: A three - factor and five - level experimental design method is adopted to study the effects of processing time, eccentricity value and rotational speed on surface roughness, and corresponding regression equations are established. ### Experimental results: - The surface roughness Ra is reduced from the initial value of 0.575 μm to 0.111 μm, a reduction of 80%, and it only takes 9.1 minutes. - The Rz roughness is reduced from 3.74 μm to 0.843 μm, a reduction of 77%. - The Rt roughness is reduced from 4.469 μm to 1.057 μm, a reduction of 76%. ### Conclusions: Eccentric magnetic - abrasive finishing significantly improves the surface quality of 316 stainless steel, especially in reducing surface roughness. In addition, the eccentric motion also improves the processing efficiency and provides a basis for further research in the future. Future research can consider testing in a shorter time range and explore the possibility of moving the rotation axis to achieve more uniform surface treatment. ### Key formulas: - Ra: \( \text{Ra} = 0.4226+3.81\times 10^{- 4}\times t^{2}-3.35\times 10^{-4}\times n \) - Rq: \( \text{Rq} = 0.6014 + 2.954\times 10^{-3}\times a^{2}-4.41\times 10^{-4}\times n \) - Rz: \( \text{Rz} = 4.5201+2.062\times 10^{-2}\times a^{2}-5.056\times 10^{-1}\times a \) - Rt: \( \text{Rt} = 7.228+3.045\times 10^{-2}\times a^{2}-4.925\times 10^{-1}\times a - 4.928\times 10^{-3}\times n \) These formulas respectively describe the relationships between different roughness parameters and processing time \( t \), eccentricity value \( a \) and rotational speed \( n \).
