Abstract:Many important QCD tests with jets and prompt photons have been performed with the experiments H1 and ZEUS at the HERA ep collider. This contribution focuses on results from jet and prompt photon photoproduction. In particular, the concept of resolved photon interactions and various jet cross sections and their sensitivity to the photon (and proton) PDFs will be discussed. In addition, recent results from prompt photon production will be shown. Finally results on multi-parton interactions and the underlying event will be presented.

Abstract:The study of hadronic structure has been carried out for many years. Generalized parton distribution functions (GPDs) give broad information on the internal structure of hadrons. Combining GPDs and high-energy scattering experiments, we expect yielding three-dimensional physical quantities from experiments. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) process is a powerful tool to study GPDs. It is one of the important experiments of Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and Electron ion collider at China (EicC) in the future. In the initial stage, the proposed EicC will have $3 \sim 5$ GeV polarized electrons on $12 \sim 25$ GeV polarized protons, with luminosity up to $1 \sim 2 \times 10^{33}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. EIC will be constructed in coming years, which will cover the variable c.m. energies from 30 to 50 GeV, with the luminosity about $10^{33} \sim 10^{34}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. In this work we present a detailed simulation of DVCS to study the feasibility of experiments at EicC and EIC. Referring the method used by HERMES Collaboration, and comparing the model calculations with pseudo data of asymmetries attributed to the DVCS, we obtained a model-dependent constraint on the total angular momentum of up and down quarks in the proton.

Abstract:In this prize talk, I recall some of the history surrounding the discovery of deeply virtual Compton scattering, and explain why it is an exciting experimental tool to obtain novel tomographic pictures of the nucleons at Jefferson Lab 12 GeV facility and the planned Electron-Ion Collider in the United States.

Abstract:Based on the two-gluon-exchange dynamical mechanism for deeply inelastic scattering at low x ~= Q^2/W^2 <<1, we stress the intimate connection between the total virtual photoabsorption cross section, deeply virtual Compton scattering and vector-meson electroproduction. A simple expression for the cross section for deeply virtual Compton scattering is derived. Parameter-free predictions are obtained for deeply-virtual Compton forward scattering and vector-meson forward production, once the parameters in the total virtual photoabsorption cross section are determined in a fit to the experimental data on deeply inelastic scattering. Our predictions are compared with the experimental data from HERA.

Abstract:Measurements sensitive to the structure of both real and virtual photons are presented and compared to theoretical models with various photon parton distribution functions (PDFs). Measurements for real photons show a tendency for the available photon PDFs to be too small to describe the data. For virtual photons, the photon PDF is seen to decrease with increasing photon virtuality. In order to describe the data, resolved photon processes are required up to a photon virtuality of at least 4.5 GeV^2.

Abstract:The first observation of an azimuthal cross section asymmetry with respect to the charge of the incoming lepton beam is reported from a study of hard exclusive electroproduction of real photons.The data have been accumulated by the HERMES experiment at DESY, in which the HERA 27.6 GeV electron or positron beam scattered off an unpolarized hydrogen gas target.The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between the Bethe-Heitler process and the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process.The interference term is sensitive to DVCS amplitudes, which provide the most direct access to generalized parton distributions.

Abstract:Measurements of the structure of the virtual photon in the transition region between quasi-real photons and those far from mass-shell have been made with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 38pb-1. Dijet final states are identified, and differential cross sections are presented in terms of xgo, an estimator of the fraction of the photon energy which takes part in the QCD subprocess. Comparison is made to theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)-a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting the distinct energy dependences of the DVCS and BH amplitudes. In the regime where the scattering is expected to occur off a single quark, measurements show an intriguing sensitivity to gluons, the carriers of the strong interaction.
The Tensor Pomeron and Low-x Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

Abstract:The two-tensor-pomeron model is applied to deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on a proton. A good description of the DVCS HERA data at small Bjorken-$x$ is achieved due to a sizeable interference of soft and hard pomeron contributions. We present two fits which differ somewhat in the strength of the hard pomeron contribution. We describe, in the same framework, both the low $Q^{2}$ and high $Q^{2}$ regimes and the transition between them. We find that the soft-pomeron contribution is considerable up to $Q^{2} \sim 20$ GeV$^{2}$. The reggeon exchange term is particularly relevant for describing the scattering of a real photon on a proton measured at lower $\gamma p$ energies at FNAL. We find that the ratio of $\gamma^{*} p \to \gamma p$ cross-sections for longitudinally and transversely polarized virtual photons strongly increases with $t$. Our findings may be checked in future lepton-nucleon scattering experiments in the low-$x$ regime, for instance, at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at the BNL and LHeC at the LHC.

Abstract:Measuring Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the neutron is one of the necessary steps to understand the structure of the nucleon in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). Neutron targets play a complementary role to transversely polarized proton targets in the determination of the GPD $E$. This poorly known and poorly constrained GPD is essential to obtain the contribution of the quarks' angular momentum to the spin of the nucleon. DVCS on the neutron was measured for the first time selecting the exclusive final state by detecting the neutron, using the Jefferson Lab longitudinally polarized electron beam, with energies up to 10.6 GeV, and the CLAS12 detector. The extracted beam-spin asymmetries, combined with DVCS observables measured on the proton, allow a clean quark-flavor separation of the imaginary parts of the GPDs $H$ and $E$.

Abstract:High-resolution measurements of angular scattering distributions provide a sensitive test for theoretical descriptions of collision processes. Crossed beam experiments employing a decelerator and velocity map imaging have proven successful to probe collision cross sections with extraordinary resolution. However, a prerequisite to exploit these possibilities is the availability of a near-threshold state-selective ionization scheme to detect the collision products, which for many species is either absent or inefficient. We present the first implementation of recoil-free vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) based detection in scattering experiments involving a decelerator and velocity map imaging. This allowed for high-resolution measurements of state-resolved angular scattering distributions for inelastic collisions between Zeeman-decelerated carbon C($^3P_1$) atoms and helium atoms. We fully resolved diffraction oscillations in the angular distributions, which showed excellent agreement with the distributions predicted by quantum scattering calculations. Our approach offers exciting prospects to investigate a large range of scattering processes with unprecedented precision.

Abstract:Hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarized proton target is studied in an effort to elucidate generalized parton distributions. The data accumulated during the years 1996-2005 with the HERMES spectrometer are analyzed to yield asymmetries with respect to the combined dependence of the cross section on beam helicity and charge, thereby revealing previously unseparated contributions from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The integrated luminosity is sufficient to show correlated dependences on two kinematic variables, and provides the most precise determination of the dependence on only the beam charge.

Abstract:We present the complete next-to-leading order calculation of isolated prompt photon production in association with a jet in deep-inelastic scattering. The calculation involves, direct, resolved, and fragmentation contributions. It is shown that defining the transverse momenta in the proton virtual-photon frame (CM∗$$^{*}$$), as usually done, or in the laboratory frame, as done in some experiments, is not equivalent and leads to important differences concerning the perturbative approach. In fact, using the latter frame may preclude, under certain conditions, the calculation of the next-to-leading order correction to the important resolved component. A comparison with the latest ZEUS data is performed and good agreement is found in the perturbatively stable regions.

Abstract:Double deeply virtual Compton scattering (DDVCS) is the process where an electron scatters off a nucleon and produces a lepton pair. The main advantage of this process in contrast with deeply virtual and timelike Compton scatterings (DVCS and TCS) is the possibility of directly measuring GPDs for $x\neq\pm\xi$ at leading order in $\alpha_s$ (LO). We present a new calculation of the DDVCS amplitude based on spinor techniques which produce expressions for amplitudes that are perfectly suited for their implementation in numerical simulations. Elements of impact studies, including predictions for experiments at JLab12, JLab20+ and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), are studied by means of the PARTONS software and the EpIC Monte Carlo event generator.

Abstract:Di-jet and inclusive charged hadron production cross-sections measured in photon-photon collisions by OPAL are compared to NLO pQCD calculations. Jet shapes measured in photon-photon scattering by OPAL, in deep-inelastic ep scattering by H1 and in photon-proton scattering by ZEUS are shown to be consistent in similar kinematic ranges. New results from TOPAZ on prompt photon production in photon-photon interactions are presented.

Abstract:The no-longer-eclipsing system SS Lac in the young open cluster NGC 7209 has been recently announced to show a constant radial velocity. Puzzled by this finding, we have monitored the system during 1997 obtaining 24 Echelle+CCD spectra over 8 orbital revolutions. Our spectra reveal a nice orbital motion with periodic splitting and merging of spectral lines from both components. An accurate orbit has been derived, together with individual masses of the stars. SS Lac presents a moderately eccentric orbit and a probably full synchronization between stellar rotation and orbital revolution.

Its measurement requires high luminosity electron beams and precise dedicated detectors, since its amplitude is quite small in the interesting kinematical domain where collinear QCD factorization allows the extraction of quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We analyze the prospects for its study in the JLab energy domain as well as in higher energy electron-ion colliders. Our results are very encouraging for various observables both with an unpolarized and polarized lepton beam. Using various realistic models for GPDs, we demonstrate that DDVCS measurements are indeed very sensitive to their behaviour. Implementing our lowest order cross-section formulae in the EpIC Monte Carlo generator, we estimate the expected number of interesting events.
