Abstract:Many important QCD tests with jets and prompt photons have been performed with the experiments H1 and ZEUS at the HERA ep collider. This contribution focuses on results from jet and prompt photon photoproduction. In particular, the concept of resolved photon interactions and various jet cross sections and their sensitivity to the photon (and proton) PDFs will be discussed. In addition, recent results from prompt photon production will be shown. Finally results on multi-parton interactions and the underlying event will be presented.

Prompt photon production with two jets in POWHEG

Abstract:Prompt photon production is highly sensitive to the distribution of quarks and gluons in free protons and nuclei and an important baseline for phenomenological studies of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. In this paper, we present a new calculation of the production of prompt photons in association with two jets at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics matched to parton showers with the POWHEG method. This calculation extends our previous analysis of prompt photon production in association with one jet using \texttt{POWHEG+PYTHIA}. We investigate the role of the parton shower as an alternative description of the parton-to-photon fragmentation process and analyse correlations between the photon and the jets. In addition, we compare \texttt{POWHEG+PYTHIA} with \texttt{POWHEG+HERWIG} predictions, experimental ATLAS data for isolated photons, and a perturbative calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. Both parton shower models bring the next-to-leading order prediction into good agreement with the experimental data and the next-to-next-to-leading order calculation.

Abstract:Prompt-gamma imaging has been a source of intensive research over the years since its first proposal in 2003. Several detection approaches have been researched and developed, and many studies on prompt-gamma imaging have been conducted on its feasibility, detection systems optimisation, and possible workflows. Now, this form of particle therapy monitoring is finally arriving in clinical settings and showing impressive results. Prompt-gamma imaging may be the key to enabling crucial improvements in particle therapy, namely when considering more complex workflow scenarios, like adaptive radiotherapy using ion beams. Herein, several aspects related to prompt-gamma imaging are introduced, covering both its advantages and limitations. The need for particle therapy monitoring, the different prompt-gamma radiation detection systems, the difficulties with dealing with low emission yields and with the tools used to simulate it, the prediction tools for prompt-gamma radiation, and the translation into clinical applications are presented and discussed. Finally, some considerations are also made on the future of prompt-gamma imaging and what it may bring into particle therapy, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide.

Abstract:The tremendous progress in high-intensity laser technology and the establishment of dedicated high-field laboratories in recent years have paved the way towards a first observation of quantum vacuum nonlinearities at the high-intensity frontier. We advocate a particularly prospective scenario, where three synchronized high-intensity laser pulses are brought into collision, giving rise to signal photons, whose frequency and propagation direction differ from the driving laser pulses, thus providing various means to achieve an excellent signal to background separation. Based on the theoretical concept of vacuum emission, we employ an efficient numerical algorithm which allows us to model the collision of focused high-intensity laser pulses in unprecedented detail. We provide accurate predictions for the numbers of signal photons accessible in experiment. Our study paves the way for a first verification of quantum vacuum nonlinearity in a well-controlled laboratory experiment at one of the many high-intensity laser facilities currently coming online.

Prompt photon in association with a heavy-quark jet in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

Abstract:We present a phenomenological study of the associated production of a prompt photon and a heavy quark jet (charm or bottom) in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This channel allows for estimating the amount of energy loss experienced by the charm and bottom quarks propagating in the dense QCD medium produced in those collisions. Calculations are carried out at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy using the BDMPS-Z heavy-quark quenching weights. The quenching of the single heavy-quark jet spectrum reflects fairly the hierarchy in the heavy quark energy loss assumed in the perturbative calculation. On the contrary, the single photon spectrum in heavy-ion collisions is only modified at low momenta, for which less heavy-quark jets pass the kinematic cuts. On top of single particle spectra, the two-particle final state provides a range of observables (photon-jet pair momentum, jet asymmetry, among others) which are studied in detail. The comparison of the photon-jet pair momentum, from p-p to Pb-Pb collisions, is sensitive to the amount of energy lost by the heavy-quarks and could therefore be used in order to better understand parton energy loss processes in the heavy quark sector.

Abstract:Chiral Lagrangians are used to compute the production rate of photons from the hadronic phase of relativistic nuclear collisions. Special attention is paid to the role of the pseudovector a_1 meson. Calculations that include reactions with strange mesons, hadronic form factors and vector spectral densities consistent with dilepton production, as well as the emission from a quark-gluon plasma and primordial nucleon-nucleon collisions, reproduce the photon spectra measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Predictions for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are made.

Abstract:The measurement of the direct-photon spectrum from Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV is presented by the PHENIX Collaboration using the external-photon-conversion technique for 0%–93% central collisions in a transverse-momentum ( pT ) range of 0.8–10 GeV/c . An excess of direct photons, above prompt-photon production from hard-scattering processes, is observed for pT<6GeV/c . Nonprompt direct photons are measured by subtracting the prompt component, which is estimated as Ncoll -scaled direct photons from p+p collisions at 200 GeV, from the direct-photon spectrum. Results are obtained for 0.8<pt<6.0gev c and suggest that the spectrum has an increasing inverse slope from ≈0.2 to 0.4 GeV/c with increasing pT , which indicates a possible sensitivity of the measurement to photons from earlier stages of the evolution of the collision. In addition, like the direct-photon production, the pT -integrated nonprompt direct-photon yields also follow a power-law scaling behavior as a function of collision-system size. Prompt optical emission from residual collisions in GRB outflows

Abstract:The prompt gamma-ray emission in gamma-ray bursts is believed to be produced by internal shocks within a relativistic unsteady outflow. The recent detection of prompt optical emission accompanying the prompt gamma-ray emission appears to be inconsistent with this model since the out flowing plasma is expected to be highly optically thick to optical photons. We show here that fluctuations in flow properties on short, ~ 1 ms, time scale, which drive the gamma-ray producing collisions at small radii, are expected to lead to "residual" collisions at much larger radii, where the optical depth to optical photons is low. The late residual collisions naturally account for the relatively bright optical emission. The apparent simultaneity of gamma-ray and optical emission is due to the highly relativistic speed with which the plasma expands. Residual collisions may also account for the X-ray emission during the early "steep decline" phase, where the radius is inferred to be larger than the gamma-ray emission radius. Finally, we point out that inverse-Compton emission from residual collisions at large radii is expected to contribute significantly to the emission at high energy, and may therefore "smear" the pair production spectral cut-off.

Abstract:We have implemented leading order photon production processes in nonequilibrium partonic transport simulations. These include Compton scattering, quark-antiquark annihilation and bremsstrahlung. We use BAMPS (Boltzmann Approach To Multi-Parton Scatterings), a numerical code which solves the 3+1d ultrarelativistic Boltzmann equation for massless on-shell quarks and gluons with Monte-Carlo methods. It allows us to study photon production microscopically, including strong nonequilibrium effects. BAMPS is applicable for the whole evolution of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in RHIC and LHC heavy-ion collisions, where the photon production is influenced by the chemical and thermal non-equilibrium state in the early phase. Highly energetic quark- and gluon jets will convert into or radiate photons, effects we include by default. We show results for photon spectra from the QGP and investigate its role for the elliptic flow of photons. The yield is smaller than results from other groups, the reason is the slow quark chemical equilibration. Photons induced by jet-like particles show very different momentum anisotropies compared to a hydrodynamically flowing medium.
Timing Estimation and Limits in TOF-PET Detectors Producing Prompt Photons

Abstract:The production of prompt photons providing high photon time densities is a promising avenue to reach ultrahigh coincidence time resolution (CTR) in time-of-flight PET. Detectors producing prompt photons are receiving high interest experimentally, ignited by past exploratory theoretical studies that have anchored some guiding principles. Here, we aim to consolidate and extend the foundations for the analytical modeling of prompt generating detectors. We extend the current models to a larger range of prompt emission kinetics where more stringent requirements on the prompt photon yield rapidly emerge as a limiting factor. Lower bound and estimator evaluations are investigated with different underlying models, notably by merging or keeping separate the prompt and scintillation photon populations. We further show the potential benefits of knowing the proportion of prompt photons within a detection set to improve the CTR by mitigating the detrimental effect of population (prompt vs scintillation) mixing. Taking into account the fluctuations on the average number of detected prompt photons in the model reveals a limited influence when prompt photons are accompanied by fast scintillation (e.g., LSO:Ce:Ca) but a more significant effect when accompanied by slower scintillation (e.g., BGO). Establishing performance characteristics and limitations of prompt generating detectors is paramount to gauging and targeting the best possible timing capabilities they can offer.
Limits on Anomalous Couplings of Quarks from Prompt Photon Data

Abstract:Prompt photon production has been known to be a sensitive probe to the gluon luminosity inside a hadron because it is mainly produced by quark-gluon scattering. For the same reason prompt photon production should also be sensitive to the anomalous couplings of gluons to quarks. We will examine the effects of two specific anomalous couplings -- chromoelectric and chromomagnetic dipole moments of quarks -- on the prompt photon production. Using the data collected by CDF and D0 at the Tevatron we put a bound on the these anomalous couplings.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the production of high energy synchrotron gamma photons in laser-plasma interaction for a laser intensity in 10 22 −5·10 23 W/cm 2 and a near-critical density target using 2D Particle-in-Cell simulations. In the optimum configuration to maximize the conversion efficiency of the laser energy to γ-photons, we studied the production of electron-positron pairs by the linear Breit-Wheeler process in the collision of two identical γ-photon beams using a dedicated photon-photon collision simulation code. A maximum laser energy conversion coefficient of 33% in high energy photons was obtained and a photon beam intensity, with energies above 1 MeV, of 2·10 20 W/cm 2 at 150 μm distance from the initial position of the target (for the highest laser intensity considered). We show that the optimum case to detect the linear Breit-Wheeler pairs corresponds to a laser intensity of 10 23 W/cm 2 . Our results can be used for the preparation of experimental campaigns for the detection of linear Breit-Wheeler pairs at the Apollon and ELI laser facilities.

Abstract:This report summarizes the work of the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force on "Real and Virtual Photon Production at Ultra-Low Transverse Momentum and Low Mass at the LHC". We provide an overview of the soft-photon puzzle, i.e., of the long-standing discrepancy between experimental data and predictions based on Low's soft-photon theorem, also referred to as "anomalous" soft photon production, and we review the current theoretical understanding of soft radiation and soft theorems. We also focus on low-mass dileptons as a tool for determining the electrical conductivity of the medium produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. We discuss how both topics can be addressed with the planned ALICE 3 detector at the LHC.

Abstract:We present the complete next-to-leading order calculation of isolated prompt photon production in association with a jet in deep-inelastic scattering. The calculation involves, direct, resolved, and fragmentation contributions. It is shown that defining the transverse momenta in the proton virtual-photon frame (CM∗$$^{*}$$), as usually done, or in the laboratory frame, as done in some experiments, is not equivalent and leads to important differences concerning the perturbative approach. In fact, using the latter frame may preclude, under certain conditions, the calculation of the next-to-leading order correction to the important resolved component. A comparison with the latest ZEUS data is performed and good agreement is found in the perturbatively stable regions.

Abstract:We discuss the isolation of prompt photons in hadronic collisions by means of narrow isolation cones and the QCD computation of the corresponding cross sections. We reconsider the occurence of large perturbative terms with logarithmic dependence on the cone size and their impact on the fragmentation scale dependence. We cure the apparent perturbative violation of unitarity for small cone sizes, which had been noticed earlier in next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations, by resumming the leading logarithmic dependence on the cone size. We discuss possible implications regarding the implementation of some hollow cone variants of the cone criterion, which simulate the experimental difficulty to impose isolation inside the region filled by the electromagnetic shower that develops in the calorimeter.

Abstract:We discuss the implementation of leading-order photon production in nonequilibrium partonic transport simulations. In this framework photons are produced by microscopic scatterings, where we include the exact matrix elements of Compton scattering, quark-antiquark annihilation, and bremsstrahlung processes. We show how the hard-thermal loop inspired screening of propagators has to be modified such that the microscopic production rate agrees well with the analytically known resummed leading-order rate. We model the complete quark-gluon plasma phase of heavy-ion collisions by using the partonic transport approach called the Boltzmann approach to multiparton scatterings (BAMPS), which solves the ultrarelativistic Boltzmann equation with Monte Carlo methods. We show photon spectra and elliptic flow of photons from BAMPS and discuss nonequilibrium effects. Due to the slow quark chemical equilibration in BAMPS, the yield is lower than the results from other groups; in turn we see a strong effect from scatterings of energetic jet-like partons with the medium. This nonequilibrium photon production can dominate the thermal emission, such that the spectra are harder and the photonic elliptic flow of the quark-gluon plasma becomes negative.
