Abstract:Many important QCD tests with jets and prompt photons have been performed with the experiments H1 and ZEUS at the HERA ep collider. This contribution focuses on results from jet and prompt photon photoproduction. In particular, the concept of resolved photon interactions and various jet cross sections and their sensitivity to the photon (and proton) PDFs will be discussed. In addition, recent results from prompt photon production will be shown. Finally results on multi-parton interactions and the underlying event will be presented.
High Energy Physics - Experiment
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly explores the research on high - transverse - momentum photon processes and their structures carried out on HERA (the world's only proton - electron collider), especially the photoproduction of jets and prompt photons. The focus of the paper lies in the results obtained from the H1 and ZEUS experiments, which are centered on the research of the photoproduction of jets and prompt photons. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following key issues: 1. **Interpret the concept of photon - photon interactions**: The paper discusses the concept of resolved photon - photon interactions. This type of interaction involves the behavior of photons as sources of quarks and gluons, where only a part of the photon's momentum participates in the hard - scattering process. This is in contrast to the direct process, in which the entire photon and its momentum participate in the hard - scattering. Through these studies, the photon's PDF (parton distribution function) can be further constrained. 2. **Jet cross - sections and their sensitivity to photon and proton PDFs**: The paper analyzes different types of jet cross - sections and explores their sensitivity to photon and proton PDFs. Through these measurements, the concepts of QCD (quantum chromodynamics) factorization, perturbative expansion, and the universality of PDFs can be tested. 3. **Multi - parton interactions and underlying events**: The paper also discusses the effects of multi - parton interactions (MPI) and underlying events. These effects are particularly important in resolved photon - photon interactions because the hadronic structure of photons makes photon - proton collisions similar to hadron - hadron collisions in some respects. Through these studies, these effects can be better understood and the MPI model in Monte Carlo simulations can be improved. 4. **Production of prompt photons**: The paper also explores the production of prompt photons, which are photons radiated from the final - state hadron system. The production of prompt photons provides another way to test QCD dynamics, with different systematic errors and reduced hadronization effects. Studies show that NLO (next - to - leading - order) theoretical calculations are crucial for describing prompt - photon data. In summary, through detailed experimental data and theoretical analysis, this paper aims to verify and improve the QCD theory, especially in the aspects of resolved photon - photon interactions and multi - parton interactions, thereby providing more accurate theoretical support for future high - energy physics experiments.
