In these proceedings, I discuss the kinematic requirements for the hadron and the prompt photon transverse momentum cuts. A case study at LHC energy, tagging on and photons, is then briefly examined.

Intensity interferometry of direct photons emitted in Au+Au collisions

Abstract:We calculate the two-body correlation function of direct photons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Our calculation includes contributions from the early pre-equilibrium phase in which photons are produced via hard parton scatterings as well as radiation of photons from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) and the subsequent expanding hadron gas. We find that high energy photon intensity interferometry provides a faithful probe of the details of the space-time evolution and of the early reaction stages of the system.

Prompt photon in association with a heavy-quark jet in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

Abstract:We present a phenomenological study of the associated production of a prompt photon and a heavy quark jet (charm or bottom) in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This channel allows for estimating the amount of energy loss experienced by the charm and bottom quarks propagating in the dense QCD medium produced in those collisions. Calculations are carried out at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy using the BDMPS-Z heavy-quark quenching weights. The quenching of the single heavy-quark jet spectrum reflects fairly the hierarchy in the heavy quark energy loss assumed in the perturbative calculation. On the contrary, the single photon spectrum in heavy-ion collisions is only modified at low momenta, for which less heavy-quark jets pass the kinematic cuts. On top of single particle spectra, the two-particle final state provides a range of observables (photon-jet pair momentum, jet asymmetry, among others) which are studied in detail. The comparison of the photon-jet pair momentum, from p-p to Pb-Pb collisions, is sensitive to the amount of energy lost by the heavy-quarks and could therefore be used in order to better understand parton energy loss processes in the heavy quark sector.

Measuring gluon shadowing with prompt photons at RHIC and LHC

Abstract:The possibility to observe the nuclear modification of the gluon distribution at small-x (gluon shadowing) using high-p_T prompt photon production at RHIC and at LHC is discussed. The per-nucleon ratio, sigma(p+A -> gamma+X) / A sigma(p+p -> gamma+X), is computed for both inclusive and isolated prompt photons in perturbative QCD at NLO using different parametrizations of nuclear parton densities, in order to assess the visibility of the shadowing signal. The production of isolated photons turns out to be a promising channel which allows for a reliable extraction of the gluon density, G^A/G^p, and the structure function, F_2^A/F_2^p, in a nucleus over that in a proton. Moreover, the production ratio of prompt photons at forward-over-backward rapidity in p-A collisions provides an estimate of G^A/G^p (at small x) over F_2^A/F_2^p (at large x), without the need of p-p reference data at the same energy.

Abstract:Prompt photons are a powerful tool to study heavy ion collisions. Their production rates provide access to the initial state parton distribution functions and also provide a means to calibrate the expected energy of jets that are produced in the medium. The ATLAS detector measures photons with its hermetic, longitudinally segmented calorimeter, which gives excellent spatial and energy resolutions, and detailed information about the shower shape of each measured photon. This provides significant rejection against the expected background from the decays of neutral pions in jets. Rejection against jet fragmentation products is further enhanced by requiring candidate photons to be isolated. First results on the spectra of isolated prompt photons from a dataset with an integrated luminosity of approximately 0.13 nb^-1 of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV are shown as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. The measured spectra are compared to expectations from perturbative QCD calculations.

Abstract:In high energy hadron collisions, direct photons can be produced in various processes and are of particular interest to study the hot QCD medium since they escape it without being affected. In these proceedings are presented the latest ALICE experiment results concerning direct photon production in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. All measurements agree with pQCD calculations at high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and show no direct photon excess at low $p_{\text{T}}$ in small systems while a low $p_{\text{T}}$ signal is found in central Pb-Pb collisions.

Abstract:The ALICE experiment at LHC will detect and identify prompt photons and light neutral-mesons with the PHOS detector and the additional EMCal electromagnetic calorimeter. Charged particles will be detected and identified by the central tracking system. In this article, the possibility of studying the interaction of jets with the nuclear medium, using prompt photons as a tool to tag jets, is investigated by simulations. New methods to identify prompt photon-jet events and to distinguish them from the jet–jet background are presented.

Abstract:The study of the dynamics of strong interactions in the high-energy regime is a core line of frontier researches at the LHC as well as at new-generation colliding facilities. Here, the enhancement of energy logarithms due to diffractive semihard final states spoils the convergence of the perturbative series in the QCD running coupling, thus calling for an improvement of the pure collinear factorization that accounts for an all-order resummation of these large logarithmic contributions. Motivated by the recent discovery that inclusive emissions of heavy-flavored particles allow for clear signals of a stabilization of high-energy resummed differential distributions under higher-order corrections and scale variations, we provide novel predictions of rapidity and azimuthal-angle observables for the inclusive hadroproduction of a light meson ( η or π± ) in association with a heavy-flavored hadron ( Λc or b -flavored hadron). We calculate our observables in a hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization framework, where next-to-leading Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov-resummed partonic cross sections are convoluted with collinear parton distributions and fragmentation functions. We consider kinematic ranges typically covered by acceptances of LHC detectors, and new ones coming from the combined tag of an ultra-forward particle at the future Forward Physics Facility and of a central one at ATLAS via a tight timing-coincidence setup. Inclusive photoproduction of vector quarkonium in ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC

Abstract:We explore the possibility of using ultra-peripheral proton-lead collisions at the LHC to study inclusive vector-quarkonium photoproduction, that occurs when a quasi-real photon emitted by a fully stripped lead ion breaks a proton to produce a vector quarkonium. Owing to the extremely large energies of the colliding hadrons circulating in the LHC, the range of accessible photon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies, W_gamma+p, largely exceeds what has been and will be studied at lepton-hadron colliders, HERA and the EIC. We perform a tune to HERA photoproduction data, use this tune to predict the yields of photoproduced J/psi, and estimate the corresponding transverse-momentum reach at LHC experiments. We also model the hadroproduction background and demonstrate that inclusive photoproduction can be isolated at the LHC from such background by imposing constraints on the hadronic activity in the lead-going direction at mid, forward, or far-forward rapidities depending on the capability of the detector under consideration. We find that the resulting cross sections are large enough to be measured by ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb. We estimate the background-to-signal ratio after isolation to be of the order of 0.001 and 0.1 in the low and large transverse-momentum regions, respectively. In addition, we propose and assess the Jacquet-Blondel method to reconstruct the photon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy and the fractional energy of the quarkonium with respect to the photon.

Probing parton distributions in ep/eA and ultra-peripheral collisions

Abstract:Real or virtual photons are excellent probes of nuclear structure, with a strong sensitivity to gluon distributions. Photonic reactions can be studied using ultra-peripheral collisions or at an electron-ion collider. Final states like dijets or open charm production are directly sensitive to the gluon distributions in nuclei. Exclusive reactions, like exclusive vector meson production or deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) go further, requiring at least two gluons. In the Good-Walker paradigm, coherent exclusive photoproduction is sensitive to the average nuclear configuration (including gluonic hot spots), and the Fourier transform of the differential cross-section $d\sigma/dt$ gives the transverse distribution of partonic targets in a nucleus. The incoherent photoproduction cross-section is sensitive to partonic fluctuations, including gluonic hot spots. Some reactions, such as dijet production, involve multiple momentum scales, and thus may be able to probe the Wigner distribution of nuclear targets. Finally, incoherent photoproduction is sensitive to partonic fluctuations; an analysis of $J/\psi$ photoproduction on proton targets found that the data clearly preferred a fluctuating lumpy proton.

Probing the photon flux in the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction at LHC

Abstract:In this paper we propose the study of the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies to probe the photon flux associated to a ultrarelativistic proton. The total photon distribution is expected to be given in terms of the elastic and inelastic components. Distinctly from the elastic photon component which can be determined from the elastic form factors, the magnitude of the inelastic component still is an open question. We consider the current parametrizations for the photon distribution of a proton and estimate the rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the production of $J/\Psi$, $\Psi^{\prime}$ and $\Upsilon$ at LHC energies. We demonstrate that the predictions associated to the inelastic contribution are of the same order than those associated to the elastic one. Our results implies that a dedicated experimental analysis of diffractive quarkonium photoproduction with the tagging of the two protons in the final state can be useful to constrain the magnitude of the inelastic component of the photon distribution.

Single Photon Production in Relativisitic Heavy Ion Collisions and Quark Hadron Phase Transition

Abstract:We discuss the recent developments in the study of single photon production in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In particular their production at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies is re-examined in view of the results of Aurenche et al which show that the rate of photon production from quark gluon plasma, evaluated at the order of two loops far exceeds the rates evaluated at one-loop level which have formed the basis of all the estimates of photons so far. We find that the production of photons from quark matter could easily out-shine those from the hadronic matter in certain ideal conditions. We further show that the earlier results lending support to the possibility of quark-hadron phase transition from the measured yield of single photons in $S+Au$ collisions at CERN SPS remain valid when an account is made for these developments, though they leave a scope for the formation of (chemically) non-equilibrated plasma.
Illuminating early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions through photons at RHIC BES energies

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} \sim 10$ GeV probe the QCD phase diagram at large baryon densities. Because the longitudinal Lorentz contraction is small at these collision energies, understanding the dynamics during the early phase of the collision is essential for the subsequent modeling of the system evolution and for constraining the QGP transport properties at finite baryon densities. Direct photons provide undistorted information on early-stage dynamics. We model relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan energies with a hybrid dynamical approach consisting of a 3D-Glauber initial state followed by viscous hydrodynamics and hadronic transport (MUSIC + UrQMD). The implemented thermal photon emission takes into account the enhancement from finite baryon chemical potentials. We show that direct photon spectra and their anisotropic flow coefficients have a strong sensitivity to the early stage of heavy-ion collisions. Thus, they provide constraints on QGP dynamics complementary to those obtained from hadronic observables.

Abstract:We discuss possible future studies of photon-photon (light-by-light) scattering using a planned FoCal and ALICE 3 detectors. We include different mechanisms of γγ→γγ scattering such as double-hadronic photon fluctuations, t/u-channel neutral pion exchange or resonance excitations (γγ→R) and deexcitation (R→γγ). The broad range of (pseudo)rapidities and lower cuts on transverse momenta open a necessity to consider not only dominant box contributions but also other subleading contributions. Here we include low mass resonant R=π0, η, η′ contributions. The resonance contributions give intermediate photon transverse momenta. However, these contributions can be eliminated by imposing windows on diphoton invariant mass. We study and quantify individual box contributions (leptonic, quarkish). The electron/positron boxes dominate at low Mγγ<1 GeV diphoton invariant masses. The PbPb→PbPbγγ cross section is calculated within equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. Several differential distributions are presented and discussed. We consider four different kinematic regions. We predict a cross section in the (mb-b) range for typical ALICE 3 cuts, a few orders of magnitude larger than for the current ATLAS or CMS experiments. We also consider the two-π0 background which can, in principle, be eliminated at the new kinematical range for the ALICE 3 measurements by imposing dedicated cuts on diphoton transverse momentum and/or so-called vector asymmetry.

Measuring the Photon Fragmentation Function at HERA

Abstract:The production of final state photons in deep inelastic scattering originates from photon radiation off leptons or quarks involved in the scattering process. Photon radiation off quarks involves a contribution from the quark-to-photon fragmentation function, corresponding to the non-perturbative transition of a hadronic jet into a single, highly energetic photon accompanied by some limited hadronic activity. Up to now, this fragmentation function was measured only in electron-positron annihilation at LEP. We demonstrate by a dedicated parton-level calculation that a competitive measurement of the quark-to-photon fragmentation function can be obtained in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. Such a measurement can be obtained by studying the photon energy spectra in $\gamma + (0+1)$-jet events, where $\gamma$ denotes a hadronic jet containing a highly energetic photon (the photon jet). Isolated photons are then defined from the photon jet by imposing a minimal photon energy fraction. For this so-called democratic clustering approach, we study the cross sections for isolated $\gamma + (0+1)$-jet and $\gamma + (1+1)$-jet production as well as for the inclusive isolated photon production in deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract:Highly energetic jets and photons are complementary probes for the kinematics and the topology of nuclear collisions. Jets are collimated sprays of charged and neutral particles, which are produced in the fragmentation of hard scattered partons in an early stage of the collision. While traversing the medium formed in nuclear collisions, they lose energy and therefore carry information about the interaction of partons with the medium. The jet substructure is particularly interesting to learn about in-medium modification of the jets and several observables exists to probe it. In contrast to jets, photons are created in all collision stages. There are prompt photons from the initial collision, thermal photons produced in the medium, and decay- and fragmentation photons from later collision stages. Photons escape the medium essentially unaffected after their creation. This article presents recent ALICE results on jet substructure and direct photon measurements in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions.

Thermal Photons As a Sensitive Probe of $$\alpha $$-Cluster in C + Au Collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Abstract:Different orientations of α-clustered carbon nuclei colliding with heavy ions can result in a large variation in the value of anisotropic flow. Thus, photon flow observables from clustered ^12C and ^197Au collisions could be a potential probe to study the `direct photon puzzle'. We calculate the transverse momentum spectra and anisotropic flow coefficients (v_n) of thermal photons from collisions of triangular α-clustered carbon and gold at √(s_ NN)=200 GeV at RHIC using a hydrodynamic model framework and compare the results with those obtained from unclustered carbon and gold collisions. The slope of the thermal photon spectra is found to vary moderately for different orientations of collisions. However, we find that the elliptic (v_2) and triangular flow (v_3) coefficients of direct photons for specific configurations are significantly larger and predominantly formed by the QGP radiation. A strong anti-correlation between initial spatial ellipticity and triangularity is observed in an event-by-event framework of α-clustered C+Au collisions. These special features provide us an opportunity to detect the exotic nature of cluster structure inside carbon nucleus using the photon probe in the future experiments.

Abstract:Several LHC experiments exploit the high acceptance in the forward region. Most of them use the possibility of measuring the intact proton in an elastic event. This approach can enhance the purity of selecting jet-gap-jet events, leading to refined limits on photon-induced processes or to a better study of pion pair production. Diffraction and elastic scattering plays also the main role when measuring the rho-parameter or the nuclear slope in total cross-section measurements.
