Abstract:In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, electromagnetic (EM) radiation has been used as a sensitive probe of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties, owing to the smaller EM coupling relative to QCD coupling. To better understand the constraining power of EM emissions on transport properties of the QGP, a deeper understanding of both the theory and phenomenology of EM signals is required. A selection of recent developments in those two areas of QGP EM probes is discussed, with an outlook on how Bayesian model-to-data comparisons can help further quantify our understanding of QGP transport coefficients.

Abstract:The photon emission from the late stages of the dynamical evolution of heavy-ion reactions at the highest RHIC and LHC energies is investigated. A comparison between a calculation from hadronic rates from a fluid dynamic evolution down to temperatures of 120 MeV and a full non-equilibrium hadronic transport approach is performed. The photon yields are very similar in both cases while the elliptic flow is slightly smaller in the non-equilibrium scenario. This study is important, since it is crucial to apply the same dynamical evolution model for hadronic and electromagnetic observables.

Coherent Photons Induced High Energy Reactions in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:We review the recent progress in the studies of coherent photons induced high energy reactions in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. The strong electromagnetic field created by a fast moving charged heavy ion can be effectively viewed as a flux of quasi-real coherent photons. In this paper, we mainly discuss two different type processes that coherent photons take part in: lepton pair production via photon fusion and diffractive vector meson production in UPCs. We focus on investigating the impact parameter dependent effect and the final state soft radiation effect. On the other hand, a series of recent work have revealed that coherent photons are highly linearly polarized with its polarization vector being parallel to its transverse momentum. It has been shown that the linearly polarized photons can lead to \begin{document}$\cos 4\phi$\end{document} azimuthal asymmetries in di-lepton production. This theoretical predication soon has been confirmed by the STAR measurement. With this new development from both theory and experiment sides, the linearly polarized photons provide a new experimental avenue to explore novel QCD phenomenology. For example, the linearly polarized photons can give rise to various different azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive vector meson production. These observables provide us unique chance to study two source interference effect in high energy scatterings, Coulomb-Nuclear interference effect as well as extracting gluon Wigner distribution. We will discuss these novel phenomenology studies and the possible future developments.

Abstract:Heavy quarks are valuable probes of the electromagnetic field and the initial condition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Within an improved Langevin model that is coupled to a (3 + 1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, we explore the origin of the directed flow coefficient (v1) of heavy mesons and their decay leptons, and its splitting (Av1) between opposite charges. We find that while the rapidity dependence of the heavy flavor v1 is mainly driven by the tilted energy density profile of the QGP with respect to the longitudinal direction at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), it is dominated by the electromagnetic field at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Av1serves as a novel probe of the spacetime evolution profile of the electromagnetic field. Our results of D mesons and their decay electrons are consistent with the available data at RHIC and LHC, and our predictions on the heavy flavor decay muons can be further tested by future measurements.

Abstract:Ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are expected to produce the strongest electromagnetic fields in the known Universe. These highly-Lorentz contracted fields can manifest themselves as linearly polarized quasi-real photons that can interact via the Breit-Wheeler process to produce lepton anti-lepton pairs. The energy and momentum distribution of the produced dileptons carry information about the strength and spatial distribution of the colliding fields. Recently it has been demonstrated that photons from these fields can interact even in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap, providing a purely electromagnetic probe of the produced medium. In this review we discuss the recent theoretical progress and experimental advances for mapping the ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions via measurement of the Breit-Wheeler process.

Abstract:Ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions (UPCs) offer unique opportunities to study processes under strong electromagnetic fields. In these collisions, highly charged fast-moving ions carry strong electromagnetic fields that can be effectively treated as photon fluxes. The exchange of photons can induce photonuclear and two-photon interactions, and excite ions. This excitation of the ions results in Coulomb dissociation with the emission of photons, neutrons, and other particles. Additionally, the electromagnetic fields generated by the ions can be sufficiently strong to enforce mutual interactions between the two colliding ions. Consequently, the two colliding ions experienced an electromagnetic force that pushed them in opposite directions, causing a back-to-back correlation in the emitted neutrons. Using a Monte Carlo simulation, we qualitatively demonstrated that the above electromagnetic effect is large enough to be observed in UPCs, which would provide a clear means to study strong electromagnetic fields and their effects.

Phenomenology of photon and di-lepton production in relativistic nuclear collisions

Abstract:We discuss the latest theoretical results on direct photon and dilepton production from relativistic heavy-ion collisions. While the dilepton spectra at low invariant mass show in-medium effects like a collisional broadening of the vector meson spectral functions, the dilepton yield at high invariant masses (above 1.1 GeV) is dominated by QGP contributions for central heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies. The present status of the photon $v_2$ "puzzle" - a large elliptic flow $v_2$ of the direct photons experimentally observed at RHIC and LHC energies - is also addressed. The role of hadronic and partonic sources for the photon spectra and $v_2$ is considered as well as the possibility to subtract the QGP signal from the experimental observables.

Abstract:We discuss the recent status of some penetrating electromagnetic probes of relativistic nuclear collisions, and the information contained in their measurement. We concentrate in turn on sources that produce high p_T photons: those of purely thermal origin, those producing direct photons, those related to jet fragmentation, and those associated with the interaction of jets with the colored plasma. Whenever possible, we compare with RHIC data and in some cases we make predictions for the LHC.
Illuminating early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions through photons at RHIC BES energies

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} \sim 10$ GeV probe the QCD phase diagram at large baryon densities. Because the longitudinal Lorentz contraction is small at these collision energies, understanding the dynamics during the early phase of the collision is essential for the subsequent modeling of the system evolution and for constraining the QGP transport properties at finite baryon densities. Direct photons provide undistorted information on early-stage dynamics. We model relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan energies with a hybrid dynamical approach consisting of a 3D-Glauber initial state followed by viscous hydrodynamics and hadronic transport (MUSIC + UrQMD). The implemented thermal photon emission takes into account the enhancement from finite baryon chemical potentials. We show that direct photon spectra and their anisotropic flow coefficients have a strong sensitivity to the early stage of heavy-ion collisions. Thus, they provide constraints on QGP dynamics complementary to those obtained from hadronic observables.

Abstract:In the study of quark–gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, hard and electromagnetic (EM) processes can be used to probe a wide range of properties of the hot and dense medium, from space–time profiles of the bulk matter, bulk transport coefficients to EM responses and the jet transport parameter. Abstract:Real or virtual photons are excellent probes of nuclear structure, with a strong sensitivity to gluon distributions. Photonic reactions can be studied using ultra-peripheral collisions or at an electron-ion collider. Final states like dijets or open charm production are directly sensitive to the gluon distributions in nuclei. Exclusive reactions, like exclusive vector meson production or deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) go further, requiring at least two gluons. In the Good-Walker paradigm, coherent exclusive photoproduction is sensitive to the average nuclear configuration (including gluonic hot spots), and the Fourier transform of the differential cross-section $d\sigma/dt$ gives the transverse distribution of partonic targets in a nucleus. The incoherent photoproduction cross-section is sensitive to partonic fluctuations, including gluonic hot spots. Some reactions, such as dijet production, involve multiple momentum scales, and thus may be able to probe the Wigner distribution of nuclear targets. Finally, incoherent photoproduction is sensitive to partonic fluctuations; an analysis of $J/\psi$ photoproduction on proton targets found that the data clearly preferred a fluctuating lumpy proton.

Abstract:In this review we address the dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion reactions and in particular the information obtained from electromagnetic probes that stem from the partonic and hadronic phases. The out-of-equilibrium description of strongly interacting relativistic fields is based on the theory of Kadanoff and Baym. For the modeling of the partonic phase we introduce an effective dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) for QCD in equilibrium. In the DQPM, the widths and masses of the dynamical quasiparticles are controlled by transport coefficients that can be compared to the corresponding quantities from lattice QCD. The resulting off-shell transport approach is denoted by Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics (PHSD) and includes covariant dynamical transition rates for hadronization and keeps track of the hadronic interactions in the final phase. It is shown that the PHSD captures the bulk dynamics of heavy-ion collisions from lower SPS to LHC energies and thus provides a solid basis for the evaluation of the electromagnetic emissivity, which is calculated on the basis of the same dynamical parton propagators that are employed for the dynamical evolution of the partonic system. The production of direct photons in elementary processes and heavy-ion reactions is discussed and the present status of the photon v2 “puzzle”–a large elliptic flow v2 of the direct photons experimentally observed in heavy-ion collisions–is addressed for nucleus–nucleus reactions at RHIC and LHC energies. The role of hadronic and partonic sources for the photon spectra and the flow coefficients v2 and v3 is considered as well as the possibility to subtract the QGP signal from the experimental observables. Furthermore, the production of e+e− or μ+μ− pairs in elementary processes and A + A reactions is addressed. The calculations within the PHSD from SIS to LHC energies show an increase of the low mass dilepton yield essentially due to the in-medium modification of the ρ-meson and at the lowest energy also due to a multiple regeneration of Δ-resonances. Furthermore, pronounced traces of the partonic degrees-of-freedom are found in the intermediate dilepton mass regime (1.2GeV<M<3GeV) at relativistic energies, which will also shed light on the nature of the very early degrees-of-freedom in nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Probing the photon flux in the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction at LHC

Abstract:In this paper we propose the study of the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies to probe the photon flux associated to a ultrarelativistic proton. The total photon distribution is expected to be given in terms of the elastic and inelastic components. Distinctly from the elastic photon component which can be determined from the elastic form factors, the magnitude of the inelastic component still is an open question. We consider the current parametrizations for the photon distribution of a proton and estimate the rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the production of $J/\Psi$, $\Psi^{\prime}$ and $\Upsilon$ at LHC energies. We demonstrate that the predictions associated to the inelastic contribution are of the same order than those associated to the elastic one. Our results implies that a dedicated experimental analysis of diffractive quarkonium photoproduction with the tagging of the two protons in the final state can be useful to constrain the magnitude of the inelastic component of the photon distribution.

Abstract:Ultra-peripheral collisions are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions, reaching, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), γ−p center of mass energies five to ten times higher than at HERA and reaching γγ energies higher than at LEP. Photoproduction of heavy quarkonium and dijets in pp and pA collisions probes the gluon distribution in protons at Bjorken-x values down to 3×10−6, far smaller than can be otherwise studied. In AA collisions, these reactions probe the gluon distributions in heavy ions, down to x values of a few 10−5. Although more theoretical work is needed to nail down all of the uncertainties, inclusion of these data in current parton distribution function fits would greatly improve the accuracy of the gluon distributions at low Bjorken-x and low/moderate Q2. High-statistics ρ0 data probe the spatial distribution of the interaction sites; the site distribution is given by the Fourier transform of dσ/dt. After introducing UPCs, this review presents recent measurements of dilepton production and light-by-light scattering and recent data on proton and heavy nuclei structure, emphasizing results presented at Quark Matter 2017 (QM2017).

Abstract:In high energy hadron collisions, direct photons can be produced in various processes and are of particular interest to study the hot QCD medium since they escape it without being affected. In these proceedings are presented the latest ALICE experiment results concerning direct photon production in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. All measurements agree with pQCD calculations at high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and show no direct photon excess at low $p_{\text{T}}$ in small systems while a low $p_{\text{T}}$ signal is found in central Pb-Pb collisions.

Neutron emission from the photon-induced reactions in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The ultraperipheral collisions are the source of various interesting phenomena based on photon-induced reactions. We calculate cross sections for single and any number of n, p, $\alpha$, $\gamma$-rays in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collision for LHC energies. We analyze the production of a given number of neutrons relevant for a recent ALICE experiment, for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. In our approach, we include both single and multiple photon exchanges as well as the fact that not all photon energies are used in the process of equilibration of the residual nucleus. We propose a simple two-component model in which only part of photon energy $E_\gamma$ is changed into the excitation energy of the nucleus ($E_{exc} \neq E_{\gamma}$) and compare its results with outcomes of HIPSE and EMPIRE codes. The role of high photon energies for small neutron multiplicities is discussed. Emission of a small number of neutrons at high photon energies seems to be crucial to understand the new ALICE data. All effects work in the desired direction, but the description of the cross section of four- and five-neutron emission cross sections from first principles is rather demanding. The estimated emission of charged particles such as protons, deuterons and $\alpha$ is shortly discussed and confronted with very recent ALICE data, obtained with the proton Zero Degree Calorimeter.
