Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. A new series of high-temperature resistant bisphthalonitrile resins containing trifluoromethyl groups were prepared based on 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) bisphthalonitrile (BFPh), which was toughened by hexafluoroisopropylidene-containing poly (aryl ether nitrile) oligomer capped by phthalonitrile (FPEN-Ph) in the different content. In addition, glass fiber reinforced composites were prepared by hot pressing process. The structure of the oligomer was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR. The curing behavior of the blends was studied by DSC. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were also studied. The results showed that the introduction of appropriate content of FPEN-Ph could improve the reactivity of the curing reaction. TGA and DMA results showed that the cured polymers and composites had excellent thermal properties. The residual mass of FPEN-Ph content of 10% at 800°C was 72.4%, and the 5% thermal degradation temperature (T5%) under inert atmosphere was 530°C. The flexural strength of glass fiber reinforced composites was about 592.7 MPa, and the shear strength was about 61.6 MPa, showing excellent mechanical properties. The high-tech thermosetting resin was toughened and enhanced at the same time without reducing heat resistance.

Abstract:Phthalonitrile resins or its blends with high heat resistance are urgently demanded for spacecrafts that usually operate in extreme environment. Here, the heat resistance of phthalonitrile was significantly improved by introducing boron powders. The boron powders not only played a role in physically insulating oxygen from the matrix but also forming the boron oxide phase, which both retarded the thermal decomposition process of phthalonitrile resin at elevated temperatures. The results show that the as-prepared phthalonitrile/boron blend with 20.0 wt% boron exhibited high Td5% of 549 °C and 552 °C in air and N2 atmosphere, respectively. For the carbon fiber fabric reinforced phthalonitrile/boron composites, the flexural modulus and flexural strength were improved from 82.6 GPa to 778 MPa for phthalonitrile resin composite to 134.2 GPa and 978 MPa at 450 °C, respectively. This work demonstrates an efficient way to prepare phthalonitrile composites with excellent thermal stability and good mechanical performance.

Abstract:Biphenyl phthalonitrile (BPh) resins with good thermal and thermo-oxidative stability demonstrate great application potential in aerospace and national defense industries. However, BPh monomer has a high melting point, poor solubility, slow curing speed and high curing temperature. It is difficult to control the polymerization process to obtain the resins with high performance. Here, a BPh prepolymer (BPh-Q) was prepared by reacting 1,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane (QCB) with BPh monomers. The BPh-Q exhibited much better solubility, faster curing speed and lower curing temperature compared with pure BPh and BPh modified with bisphenol A (BPh-B, a common prepolymer of BPh). Thus, the polymerization process of BPh was greatly accelerated at a low temperature, resulting in a BPh resin with enhanced thermostability and oxidation resistance. The experimental and theoretical models revealed the promotion effect of B-H bond on the curing reaction of phthalonitrile via Markovnikov addition reaction due to the special steric structure of carborane. This study provided an efficient method to obtain low-temperature curing phthalonitrile resins with high thermal and thermo-oxidative resistance, which would be potentially useful for the preparation of high-performance cyanide resin-based composites.
Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Borazine-Type UV Photo-Induced Polymerization of Ceramic Precursors.

Abstract:A preceramic polymer of B,B′,B′′-(dimethyl)ethyl-acrylate-silyloxyethyl-borazine was synthesized by three steps from a molecular single-source precursor and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Six-member borazine rings and acrylate groups were effectively introduced into the preceramic polymer to activate UV photo-induced polymerization. Photo-Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Photo-DSC) and real-time FTIR techniques were adapted to investigate the photo-polymerization process. The results revealed that the borazine derivative exhibited dramatic activity by UV polymerization, the double-bond conversion of which reached a maximum in 40 s. Furthermore, the properties of the pyrogenetic products were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which proved the ceramic annealed at 1100 °C retained the amorphous phase.
Improved Thermal Stabilities, Ablation and Mechanical Properties for Carbon Fibers/Phenolic Resins Laminated Composites Modified by Silicon-containing Polyborazine

Abstract:Synthesized ceramic precursor of silicon-containing polyborazine (SPBZ) was introduced to fabricate the modified phenolic resins (SPBZ-PR), which was then performed as resin matrix to obtain carbon fibers reinforced SPBZ-PR (CF/SPBZ-PR) laminated composites via hot-compression. The incorporation of SPBZ could improve the thermal stabilities of PR, and the optimal decomposition temperature at 5% weight loss (T5) of the SPBZ15-PR (15 wt% of phenol to SPBZ) was increased to 406.8C and the char yield at 1200C still retained 70.3%, owing to borazine ring and formed SiOx structure during pyrolysis process. Furthermore, the CF/SPBZ15-PR laminated composites presented relatively higher ILSS, more excellent ablation properties and shape retention abilities than that of CF/PR laminated composites. The corresponding linear and mass ablation rate were both decreased from 0.013 mm/s and 0.033 g/s for CF/PR laminated composites to 0.0079 mm/s and 0.025 g/s, decreased by 39.2% and 24.2%, respectively.

Abstract:A new kind of polymeric zirconium as a Zr-based ceramic precursor has been synthesized by trichloro-ethylene,phenylacetylene,n-butyllithium and ZrCl4 .The structure of the polymer containing zirconium and al-kyne(PZA)was characterized by molecular weight,FT-IR.The heat-resistant property under nitrogen was studied by TGA and the ceramic transformation was studied by XRD.Results show that PZA polymer have great heat-resistant property,the T d1 0 (10% mass loss temperature)was up to 600 ℃,the mass retention was 61.9% after 1 000 ℃,the ceramic conversion was ZrC after 1 450 ℃.

Abstract:Phthalonitrile resins as a unique class of high-performance materials have attracted increasing interest in a wide application fields including aerospace, electronic packaging and flame-retardant materials. In this manuscript, boron element was incorporated in phthalonitrile resins to improve the processibility and thermal stability. The synthetic borate and aryl borate-modified resorcinol-based phthalonitrile monomers (BPN, PBPN) showed lower melting points than that of traditionally employed RPN. The presence of hydroxyl groups leads to autocatalytic curing behavior of BPN and PBPN. Due to the presence of the boron-branched structures in the polymer backbone of the modified phthalonitrile resins, these resins exhibited better thermal stability than that of traditionally investigated RPN and their mechanical properties are stable over a wide temperature range, which is crucial in service under harsh environments. The results suggest that boron-modified phthalonitrile resins possess great potential in the field of high-temperature resistant materials.

Abstract:Simultaneously improving the heat resistance and mechanical properties for phthalonitrile resin using inorganic filler with high melt-point remains a challenge owing to the difficult formation of a ceramic protective layer to enhance the heat resistance of phthalonitrile resin. Here, heat resistance and mechanical performance of the phthalonitrile resin were both improved by introducing low melt-point molten oxide with temperature-adaptable geometry. The as-prepare phthalonitrile/molten oxide blend exhibited high temperature of 5% mass loss of 525.2 o C and 554.6 o C at air and N 2 atmosphere, respectively, and high mass residue of 81.9% at 900 o C (in N 2 ). The enhanced thermal stability of blend was attributed to the formation of protective layer from temperature-adaptable capacity of oxide. For the carbon fiber fabric reinforced blend composite, the flexural strength was improved by 29.1%, 59.6%, and 54.6% compared with pristine carbon fiber fabric reinforced phthalonitrile composites at room temperature, 400 o C and 500 o C, respectively.

Abstract:The shortcomings of the resin matrix often limit the application of composite materials in advanced equipment. The scope of use of phthalonitrile resins as composite matrices needs to consider factors such as the mechanical defects of the material, which can be called “Cannikin’s Law” of phthalonitrile resins. “Cannikin’s Law” of materials has garnered significant attention, and resin matrices with excellent mechanical properties, high heat resistances, and multifunctionalities are in demand in the aerospace field. Herein, we report a molecular modification design of high-temperature-resistant phthalonitrile resins modified by customized polyarylene ether nitrile fillers, which optimize the comprehensive performance of phthalonitrile resins from multiple perspectives. Specifically, nitrile groups are introduced into polyarylene ether nitrile and subjected to silicon hybridization, leading to the formation of a silicon ether-containing poly(arylene ether nitrile) oligomer (BPSiPEN); BPSiPEN is added to the phthalonitrile resins as a filler, and carbon fiber-reinforced phthalonitrile resin-based composites are prepared. The comprehensive performance of the modified composites with different additive amounts is systematically investigated and characterized. The results show that the introduction of BPSiPEN significantly improves the comprehensive performance of the phthalonitrile resin. Specifically, when 7% BPSiPEN is added, an ultralow dielectric coefficient, extremely smaller than those of other resins, is realized. The dielectric constant and loss are stabilized at 2.07 and 0.0058, which are 39.12 and 31.68% lower than those of the unmodified sample, respectively. The resin’s high-temperature resistance and mechanical properties are also tested, and the dynamic mechanical properties, water absorption characteristics, and flame retardancy of the composites are analyzed.

Abstract:Phthalonitrile resins are one of the high temperature resistant polymers which can be potentially used for harsh environments in both military and domestic fields. The high melting points of the monomers led to short processing windows and made processing procedure challenging and energy intensive. To solve this problem, liquid phthalonitrile monomers containing flexible siloxane segments were designed and synthesized. The long bond length and large bond angle of Si-O-Si chain segments introduced flexibility into the monomers and effectively reduced the melting point to -35.9 °C. Meanwhile, the high bond energy preserved the thermal stability of the resulting cured resin. The high fluidity (viscosity of ∼2 Pa·s at 30 ̊C) allows the monomers to be processed at room temperature without additional heating. In addition, the monomers can be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as ethyl acetate and ethanol. The resins cured at 250 ̊C demonstrated good thermal and thermal oxygen stability. The weight loss of 5% in argon and air at temperatures of 428.6 °C and 434.9 °C, respectively. Furthermore, blending this liquid monomer blended with powdered monomers improved both the processibility of the high melting monomers and the overall temperature resistance of the cured resin. The resin showed a weight loss of 5% in argon and air of 534.4 °C and 532.3 °C, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, a novel phthalonitrile monomer containing a pyridazine ring, 3,6-bis[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenoxy]pyridazine (BCPD) with a low melting point (74 °C) and wide processing window (178 °C), was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The molecular structure of the BCPD monomer was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Poly(BCPD) resins were derived from the formulations by curing at 350 and 370 °C. The thermoset that was post-cured at 370 °C demonstrated outstanding high heat-resistant (glass transition temperature (Tg) > 400 °C, 5% weight loss temperature (T5%) = 501 °C, Yc at 900 °C > 74%) and was flame-retardant (limiting oxygen index (LOI) = 48)). Further, the poly(BCPD) resin simultaneously exhibited a superior storage modulus, which could reach up to 3.8 Gpa at room temperature. Excellent processability and heat resistance were found for phthalonitrile thermosets containing the pyridazine ring, indicating poly(BCPD) resin could be potentially applied as high-temperature structural composite matrices.

Abstract:Linear carborane-carbosilane-phenylacetylene polymers have been synthesized as precursors for ceramic and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR), and carbon-nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 C-NMR). Novel linear polymers have the advantage of being extremely easy to process and convert into ceramics, since they are either viscous liquids or low melting solids at room temperature and are soluble in most organic solvents. Ceramic conversion reaction of the polymers was studied, and the conversion mechanism using thermogravimetric analyzer, FT-IR, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was proposed. During the early heating period in the mechanism, the precursor polymer is cured and oligomer is formed. Then the degradation of oligomer takes place at higher temperatures with the weak bond cleaved and cross-linked simultaneously. Ceramic yield of the polymer after heating up to 1000°C in nitrogen (N 2 ) was 77.6%. The derived ceramics exhibit excellent thermal and thermo-oxidative stability, whose 5% mass loss temperature was identified to be 650°C in N 2 and 665°C in air, respectively. Boron appears to be the key element to achieve the outstanding thermo-oxidative stability. The relevant kinetic data were obtained by two kinds of model-free-kinetic algorithms, differential Friedman and integral Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose. These two methods were combined to give the energy profile, which has been identified to be a function of the transformation degree ( α), since the energy demand at each degradation stage is different depending on α.

Study on Resin and Its Composites of a Novel Bisphthalonirile Containing Benzoxazine Units

Abstract:A novel bisphthalonitrile containing benzoxazine units(BZ-BPH)was synthesized via a solventless method from 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl,paraformaldehyde and 4-aminophenoxylphthalonitrile.The chemical structure of BZ-BPH was confirmed by 1H NMR,13C NMR and DSC analyses.BZ-BPH/glass fiber prepregs formulated by solution impregnation process and the composites was fabricated via the hot pressing technology.The mechanical property,water absorption were tested.TGA and DMA were used to characterize the thermal property of the composite.The fracture morphology was investigated by SEM.The result indicated that the composite exhibited excellent thermal property.The 5%loss temperature in air and nitrogen was 542 and 482,respectively.The flexural strength retention was 91%after treated at 400 ℃ for 30 min and the water absorption was less than 1.4%after soaking in boiling water for 24 hours.

Abstract:The high strength,high modulus,high thermal stable properties,and special functionalized methods of bisphthalonitrile polymers are discussed.The functional design on chemical reaction of polymer systhesis is mainly studied through some special bisphthalonitrile monomer.The thermosetting resin which is easy to process and convenient to cure could be supplied as the high performance matrix resin.The ferrocene group was bonded to bisphthalonitrile resin by molecure structure design methods.The cured polymer exhibits good electrochemistry properties.The polymer magnetic materials with courier temperature beyond 300oC was obtained.The magnetic functional composites containing organic-inorganic hybrid materials were obtained according to the reactivity between bisphthalonitrile and metal or metal salt.The nano functional composite materials were prepared by the surface nitrilized of carbon nanotubes.The hyperbranch Cu-phthalocyanine with high permittivity and PEN dielectric film with high strength were realized by the chemical control systhesis.The electric,magnetic,and shear stress field influences of polymer microstructure are studied.These functionalized research efforts broad the research,development and application region of the bisphthalonitrile polymer.

Abstract:Boron-containing organosilicon polymers are widely used under harsh environments as preceramic polymers for advanced ceramics fabrication. However, harmful chemicals released during synthesis and the complex synthesis routes have limited their applications. To solve the problems, a two-component route was adopted to synthesize cross-linked boron-containing silicone polymer (CPBCS) via a solventless process. The boron content and CPBCSs’ polymeric structures could be readily tuned through controlling the ratio of multifunctional boron hybrid silazane monomers (BSZ12) and poly[imino(methylsilylene)]. The CPBCSs showed high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The CPBCS with Si-H/C=C ratio of 10:1 showed 75 wt% char yields at 1000 °C in argon, and the heat release capacity (HRC) and total heat release (THR) are determined to be 37.9 J/g K and 6.2 KJ/g, demonstrating high thermal stability and flame retardancy. The reduced modulus and hardness of CPBCS are 0.30 GPa and 2.32 GPa, respectively. The novel polysilazanes can be potentially used under harsh environments, such as high temperatures or fire hazards.

Abstract:A novel vinylpyridine-based phthalonitrile monomer, 2,6-bis[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)styryl]pyridine (BDSP), was resoundingly produced by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2,6-bis(3-hydroxystyryl)pyridine with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in the presence of potassium carbonate. The chemical structure of the synthesized BDSP was confirmed by proton ( 1 H) and carbon ( 12 C) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The curing behavior of BDSP was investigated by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The resin showed a low complex viscosity in the wide processing window between the monomer melting temperature and the curing temperature of the polymer, as discovered by rheological analysis. In addition, the properties of the polymer were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Based on the test results, the BDSP polymer demonstrated superior processing performance, excellent thermal stability, outstanding mechanical properties, and low water uptake, and these advanced performance characteristics are critical to many fields.

Abstract:Enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal stability of phthalonitrile polymers by hybrid modification holds significant importance in broadening their thermal-structural applications within high-temperature environments. Herein, fumed silica nanoparticles were considered as modifiers for a class of phenolic-type phthalonitrile resin, i.e., PN75, and their effects on mechanical properties and thermal stability were explored. First, contact angle tests (CA) were employed to show that the PN75 melt had good wettability on hydrophilic fumed silica (FS) and poor wettability on hydrophobic fumed silica (RFS). FS had a relatively satisfactory dispersion within PN75, which was indicated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), followed by FS/PN75 nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending under vacuum, with maximum FS addition 3 wt% of PN75. Second, the flexural strength and modulus of nanocomposites were increased by 23.5% and 11.9%. Finally, thermal stability of the FS/PN75 was promoted from 21.6% to 25.6% in char residue at 800 C in the air atmosphere by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which was contributed by the high heat-resistance and the shielding effect of FS. This work would inspire in-depth studies on modification and design of phthalonitrile-based hybrid composites for extreme thermal environment.

Abstract:The heat resistance of existing phenolic resins cannot meet the requirements of the increasingly harsh spaceflight environment. Boron and silicon have been added to phenolic resins to improve the char yields. However, achieving both a high initial decomposition temperature and an outstanding char yield remains challenging. This study presented a strategy to regulate the methylene types of boron -containing phenolic resin (TBPR) by trisilanolphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (TPOSS) and NaOH. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in nitrogen of cured TBPR displayed remarkable thermal stability with an initial decomposition temperature of 450.0 degrees C and a char yield of 75.8 %. The effect of TPOSS and NaOH on the TBPR structure were further investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results indicated that TPOSS could attract sodium phenate and formaldehyde through hydrogen bonds, and greatly reduced the energy barrier of the phenol-formaldehyde resin para -addition. The formation of more p -p' type methylene structures of phenolic resin profoundly contributed to the outstanding initial decomposition temperatures and char yield. TBPR matrix transformed into a stronger protective char layer, forming an effective thermal protection barrier. As a result, the mechanical strength and ablative resistance of the fiber -reinforced CF/TBPR composites were enhanced by the excellent thermal stability of TBPR matrix.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a novel heat-resistant boron-silicon hybrid polymer containing acetylene (PBSA) and its conversion to a highly crosslinked thermoset were discussed. The polymer was synthesized from phenylboron dichloride using Grignard reagent method. The structure of PBSA was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectra, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. PBSA was thermosetting, highly heat-resistant, high-viscous, orange liquid at room temperature and good solubility in common organic solvents. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis analyses showed that the PBSA had excellent thermal and oxidative stability and the temperature of 5% weight loss (Td5) were 650 and 638 degrees C under nitrogen and air, respectively, and the residue at 1000 degrees C were 93.3 and 91.3%, respectively, which indicated that the incorporation of boron and silicon into polymeric backbone was found to improve thermal and oxidative properties. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope were also used to analyze the formation of pyrolytic products. Abstract:A series of bisphenol A (BPA)-based 2,2-bis-[4-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenyl]propane (BAPh) prepolymers and polymers were prepared using BPA as a novel curing agent. Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum were used to study the polymerization reaction mechanism of the BAPh/BPA polymers. The curing behaviors were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic rheological analysis, the results indicated that the BAPh/BPA prepolymers exhibit large processing windows (109.5-148.5 degrees C) and low complex viscosity (0.1-1 Pa center dot s) at moderate temperature, respectively. Additionally, the BAPh/BPA/glass fiber (GF) composite laminates were manufactured and investigated. The flexural strength and modulus of the composite laminates are 548.7-632.8 MPa and 25.7-33.2 GPa, respectively. The thermal stabilities of BAPh/BPA/GF composite laminates were studied by thermogravimetry analysis. The temperatures at 5% weight loss (T5%) of the composite laminates are 508.5-528.7 degrees C in nitrogen and 508.1-543.2 degrees C in air.
