Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were hydrophilic modified with hydroxyl group terminated hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HPAE). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to study the chemical change of PVDF membranes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that some HPAE molecules were retained in PVDF membrane through polymer chain coiling. The presence of HPAE would improve the hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of different membranes. The thermodynamic stability for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was characterized by the determination of the gelation values. Precipitation kinetics for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was studied by precipitation time measurement. The water contact angle indicated that the hydrophilicity and the biocompatibility corresponding to protein adsorption of PVDF membrane were improved significantly after blending with hydrophilic HPAE molecules. Abstract:Porous poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) membranes were successfully prepared using dibutyl phthalate (DBP), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-K30), polyethylene glycol 200 (PF-G200) as templates. SEM was used to examine the morphology of the PVDF-HFP Porous membranes. It was found that these membranes have an asymmetric structure and the blends of PVDF-HFP/DBP formed nanoporous membranes, whereas the blends of PVDF-HFP/PVP-K30 formed "sponge-like" and microporous membranes. Moreover, the average pore size and porosity was about 0.3 mu m and 48.7%, respectively. The crystallinity, thermal stability and mechanical strength of membranes were characterized by XRD, DSC, TGA and stress-strain tests. The results showed that the membranes are a crystals with excellent thermal stability. It was in effective way to regulate pore size and morphology of the PVDF-HFP membranes.

Abstract:Porous membranes were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solution composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG). The membranes were characterized in terms of surface and bulk chemical compositions, morphology, water contact angle, porosity, and water flux. The effects of HPG content on membrane structures and properties were investigated. The effect of HPG addition on the hydrophilicity was discussed as well when the compositions of coagulation bath were changed. To better understand the special effects of HPG on the structures and properties of the membranes, PVDF membranes prepared using HPG as the additive were compared with those prepared using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the additive.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) microporous membrane was prepared by supercritical CO2 extraction of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) template from PVDF-HFP/DBP film. The effects of extraction conditions such as pressure, temperature, and extraction time on extraction efficiency and the porosity of membrane were studied. The extraction efficiency of DBP and size stability of polymer membrane during extraction was compared with those of solvent extraction process. The structure of the resulting membrane was characterized by scanning electron microphotograph (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). With increasing the extraction temperature, pressure and time, the extraction efficiency and the porosity increased. Maximum extraction efficiency is obtained at extraction pressure and temperature higher than 18MPa and 75 degrees C, respectively. The porosity of membranes depended on the extraction efficiency and shrinkage ratio of membranes. Compared with solvent extraction, supercritical CO2 extraction of the film generated the membrane with more uniform structure and higher porosity.

Abstract:Three kinds of amphiphilic polymers, including the tri-block copolymer of (polyethylene oxide)–(polypropylene oxide)–(polyethylene oxide) (I, EPTBP), the comb-like copolymer of polysiloxane with polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide side chains (II, ACPS) and the hyperbranched star copolymer of polyester-g-methoxyl polyethylene glycol (III, HPE-g-MPEG), were blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via a phase inversion process, respectively, and the effects of the different structures of the amphiphilic polymers on the properties of the blend membranes were compared. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, mercury porosimetry, water contact angle measurements, etc. The anti-fouling properties of the prepared membranes were evaluated by static and dynamic bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorptions. Specially, the stabilities of these amphiphilic polymers in the final membranes were estimated by continuous leaching tests. At the same time, the properties of the membranes using the amphiphilic polymers as modifiers were compared with those of the membrane using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as modifier.

Abstract:The new amphiphilic triblock copolymers of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone-b-methyl methacrylate-b-N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (P(VP-b-MMA-b-VP)) were synthesized via a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization route. Using these copolymers as additives in casting solutions, the porous blend membranes of poly (vinylidene fluoride) and P(VP-b-MMA-b-VP) were prepared following a typical nonsolvent induced phase separation process. The influences of P(VP-b-MMA-b-VP) on the morphologies of the blend membranes were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical compositions in membrane surface layers were measured by X-ray photoelectron measurement. Water contact angle and water flux experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and permeation properties of the blend membranes. It was found that the P(VP-b-MMA-b-VP) copolymers could be retained in membrane stably in membrane formation and application process. Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was irradiated by electron beam in vacuum at 20 KGy to produce living free radicals, and then reacted with acrylic acid (AA) in solution to obtain the PVC-g-AA copolymers. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Porous membranes were prepared from copolymers by the phase inversion technique. The morphology of PVC-g-AA membranes was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The mean pore size and pore size distribution were determined by a mercury porosimeter. The mean pore size was 0.19 mu m, and the bulk porosity was 56.02%. The apparent static water contact angle was 89.0 degrees. The water drop penetration rate was 2.35 times to the original membrane. The maximum stress was 4.10 MPa. Filtration experiments were carried out to evaluate the fouling resistance of the PVC-g-AA membrane. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were prepared via immersion precipitation process from PVDF/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water system. By manipulating precipitation temperature and PVDF concentration in casting solution, the polymorphism in the formed porous membranes was studied. Membrane morphologies were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermal behaviors of membranes were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) were employed to analyze the crystalline structures of the overall membranes and the surface layers. It was found that, for all the investigated cases, PVDF mainly crystallized into the α form crystalline structure in the overall membrane, while the α and β phases coexisted in the surface layers. The total crystallinity of the membrane and the β/α phase ratio in the surface layers increased simultaneously while raising PVDF concentration in casting solution or reducing precipitation temperature.

Abstract:Porous membranes were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solutions composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride), hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG), and N,N-dimethylacetamide. To seek a stable presence of HPG in the resulting membranes, it was crosslinked in the casting solutions using 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride as the crosslinking agent. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, surface and bulk chemical compositions, water contact angle, porosity, water flux, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption experiments. The effects of HPG content and crosslinking degree on the membrane structure and properties were investigated. The increasing of crosslinking degree resulted in a significant improvement in HPG stability in the membrane matrix, and a remarkable enrichment of the crosslinked HPG at the separation surface was observed when the membrane was shaken in water at a relatively high temperature (60 degrees C). This enrichment led to a decrease in the value of water contact angle and an improvement in fouling-resistance. To optimize the membrane performance, a small amount of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as an additive, and it was found that the addition of PVP led to a considerable increase in water flux. Abstract:An amphiphilic terpolymer P(MMA-BA-PEOM) was synthesized by free radical polymerization and used as the macromolecular additive in the preparation of PVDF blend membranes. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of terpolymers was controlled with a wide range from −6 to 40°C by adjusting the feed ratio of rigid monomer MMA to soft monomer BA. The increase of static contact angle of copolymer with PBA content indicated that softer chain can facilitate the hydrophobic parts of the additive segregation to the surface of a polymer film at the solid–air interface. The observation of morphology of the extracted PVDF blend membrane verified that P(MMA-BA-PEOM) could facilitate the surface segregation. Filtration experiment showed that PVDF membrane modified by terpolymer P(MMA-BA-PEOM) has a higher pure water flux (365Lm−2h−1) and relative flux recovery (71%) than that modified by bipolymer P(MMA-co-POEM).

Abstract:Amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymers (HPE-g-MPEG) with different arm length were synthesized by grafting methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)s (MPEGs, M¯n=350,750and2000, respectively) to the hyperbranched polyester (HPE) molecule using terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) as the coupling agent, and blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via phase inversion process. Membrane morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), and chemical composition changes of the membrane surfaces were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angle, static protein adsorption, and filtration experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties of the membranes. It was found that, with the increase in MPEG arm length, the MPEG segments of HPE-g-MPEG enriched at the membrane surfaces substantially, resulting in a significant decrease in water contact angle. Furthermore, the blend membranes containing longer arm HPE-g-MPEGs showed lower static protein adsorption, higher protein solution fluxes, and better protein solution flux recovery than the pure PVDF membrane.

Abstract:Amphiphilic brush-like copolymer P(MMA-r-PEGMA) was synthesized by a radical polymerization method. The copolymer was characterized by the nuclear magnetic resonance proton spectra (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane was then prepared by the phase inversion method using the copolymer as the macromolecular additive. The effect of P(MMA-r-PEGMA) on the phase inversion process was investigated using a light transmission experiment. The surface enrichment of amphiphilic copolymer in the PVDF hollow fiber was characterized by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Morphological structures of both dry and wet membranes were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrophilicity, water permeation flux, anti-fouling and carbon ink rejection performance of the hollow fiber were characterized respectively. All these results demonstrated that PVDF hollow fibers fabricated by the single-step method showed high permeation flux, good hydrophilicity and fouling resistance.

Abstract:A graft copolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with a glucose-carrying methacrylate, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose, was synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization technique with commercial PVDF as the macroinitiator. After a treatment with 88% formic acid, the isopropylidenyl groups of the precursor graft copolymer [poly(vinylidene fluoride)-g-poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose)] were converted into hydroxyl groups, and this produced an amphiphilic graft copolymer (PVDF-g-PMAG) [poly(vinylidene fluoride)-g-poly(3-O-methacryloyl-alpha,beta-D-glucopyranose)] with glycopolymer side chains and a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight <1.29). This glucose-carrying graft copolymer was characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. A novel porous membrane prepared from blends of PVDF with PVDF-g-PMAG via an immersion-precipitation technique exhibited significantly enhanced hydrophilicity and an anti-protein-adsorption property. Abstract:Crosslinked hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HPAE) membranes were prepared by crosslinking its terminal hydroxyl groups with glutaraldehyde (GA). The crosslinked HPAE membranes showed high reactivity and good hydrophilicity. The crosslinking degree was investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectra (FT-IR). Atom force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) reveals that the crosslinked HPAE films have smooth surfaces, dense and homogenous matrices. The swelling degree of the membrane was higher in water than that in isopropanol. From the permeation of pure water through the HPAE membrane, the effect of hydroxyl/aldehyde group ratio on the permeation flux and separation factor was investigated. The results indicated that the permeation flux increase was accompanied with the separation factor decrease if the water concentration increased in the feed solution.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes were prepared by dry/wet and wet phase inversion methods. In spinning these PVDF hollow fibers, dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a solvent and an additive, respectively. Water was used as the external coagulant. Water or ethanol was used as the internal coagulants. The membranes were characterized in terms of water flux, molecular weight cut-off for the wet membranes. Gas permeation fluxes and effective surface porosity were determined by a gas permeation method for the dried membranes. The cross-sectional structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of polymer concentration, air-gap, PVP molecular weight, PVP content in the polymer dope, and the internal coagulant on the permeation properties and membrane structures were examined. Highly permeable PVDF hollow fiber membranes could be prepared from a polymer dope containing low molecular weight PVP and using ethanol as the internal coagulant.

Abstract:To endow hydrophobic poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with reliable hydrophilicity and protein resistance, hyperbranched poly (amine-ester) functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTHPAE) were prepared to develop MWNTHPAE/PVDF nanocomposite membrane. Various techniques such as transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle goniometry, as well as static protein adsorption and permeability experiments were applied to characterize the effect of MWNTHPAE on the morphology, permeability and anti-fouling performance of the nanocomposite membranes. The results showed that MWNTHPAE were randomly dispersed at the individual nanotube levels in the membrane without obvious agglomerations. The hydrophilicity of nanocomposite membrane was enhanced due to the surface coverage of hydrophilic hyperbranched poly (amine-ester) (HPAE) groups. Consequently, protein adsorption was significantly inhibited due to the hydrogen bonding interactions between hydrophilic groups and water molecules. This was also indicated by the higher flux recovery ratio of nanocomposite membranes in the protein filtration experiment. In addition, high water transport was obtained by the dual effect of hydrophilic MWNTHPAE and the pore structure of membrane.

Abstract:The preparation of very hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes was explored by using two methods. The first one was the modified phase inversion method using a water/N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) mixture instead of pure water as a soft precipitation bath. The second method was a precipitation-bath free method, that is, the PVDF/DMAc casting solution underwent gelation in the open air instead of being immersed into a precipitation bath. The morphology of the surface and cross section of the membranes was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the membranes exhibited certain micro- and nanoscale hierarchical roughness on the surface, which brought about an enhanced hydrophobicity of the membrane. The contact angle (CA) of the samples obtained by the second method was as high as 150 degrees with water. The conventional phase inversion method preparing PVDF porous membrane using pure water as precipitation bath usually results in an asymmetric membrane with a dense skin layer having a CA close to that of a smooth PVDF surface. The modified approach avoided the formation of a skin-layer and resulted in a porous and highly hydrophobic surface of PVDF. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
