Abstract:Solid-to-solid diffusion bond between ferritic SA508 low alloy steel (LAS) and austenitic 316L stainless steel (SS) via hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was evaluated. This study investigated the microstructural and mechanical evolutions of the bimetallic interface before and after heat treatment. The interfacial region between two materials demonstrated uniform microstructure, no visible manufacturing defects, and higher interfacial hardness and tensile strength. The joint interface was stronger than for both 316L SS and SA508 LAS. The interfacial hardening was attributed to the significant grain refinement at the interface region and dislocation hardening under as-HIP'ed condition. Post-HIP heat treatment considerably reduced the interfacial strength, attributed to dislocation recovery and grain growth. From the mechanical perspective, the work confirmed utilizing HIP capsules during HIP manufacturing provides adequate interfacial strength between 316L SS HIP capsule and SA508 LAS for cladding purposes. The 316L SS HIP capsule may be used as the cladding layer for corrosion protection.
