Abstract:We present two new constructions in the usual euclidean plane. We only deal with 'Grecian Geometry', with this phrase we mean elementary geometry in the two-dimensional space R 2 . We describe and prove two propositions about 'projections'. The proofs need only elementary analytical knowledge.

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:Of the great theories of classical mathematics, projective geometry, with its powerful concepts of symmetry and duality, has been exceptional in continuing to intrigue investigators. The challenge put forth by Errett Bishop (1928-1983), "Every theorem proved with nonconstructive methods presents a challenge: to find a constructive version, and to give it a constructive proof", motivates a large portion of current constructive work. This challenge can be answered by discovering the hidden constructive content of classical projective geometry. Here we briefly outline, with few details, recent constructive work on the real projective plane, and projective extensions of affine planes. Special note is taken of a number of interesting open problems that remain; these show that constructive projective geometry is still a theory very much in need of further effort. The Bishop-type constructive mathematics discussed in the present paper proceeds from a viewpoint well-nigh opposite that of either formal logic or recursive function theory.

Abstract:Given Tarski’s version of Euclidean straightedge and compass geometry, it is shown how to express construction theorems, and shown that for any purely existential theorem there is a construction theorem implying it. Some related results and open questions are then briefly described.

Abstract:Constructive-deductive method for plane Euclidean geometry is proposed and formalized within Coq Proof Assistant. This method includes both postulates that describe elementary constructions by idealized geometric tools (pencil, straightedge and compass), and axioms that describes properties of basic geometric figures (points, lines, circles and triangles). The proposed system of postulates and axioms can be considered as a constructive version of the Hilbert's formalization of plane Euclidean geometry.

Abstract:The article presents a new approach to euclidean plane geometry based on projective geometric algebra (PGA). It is designed for anyone with an interest in plane geometry, or who wishes to familiarize themselves with PGA. After a brief review of PGA, the article focuses on P(R2,0,1∗)$$\mathbf {P}(\mathbb {R}^*_{2,0,1}) $$, the PGA for euclidean plane geometry. It first explores the geometric product involving pairs and triples of basic elements (points and lines), establishing a wealth of fundamental metric and non-metric properties. It then applies the algebra to a variety of familiar topics in plane euclidean geometry and shows that it compares favorably with other approaches in regard to completeness, compactness, practicality, and elegance. The seamless integration of euclidean and ideal (or “infinite”) elements forms an essential and novel feature of the treatment. Numerous figures accompany the text. For readers with the requisite mathematical background, a self-contained coordinate-free introduction to the algebra is provided in an appendix.

Abstract:THE classical Euclidean constructions allow only the unmarked straightedge and a pair of compasses, now commonly called “a compass.” With these limited tools we can carry through the many beautiful constructions of elementary geometry. A lack of understanding of the “rules of the game” leads to such confused and incorrect statements as “It is impossible to trisect an angle.” But of course we can trisect a right angle; and as for trisecting any angle, there is a simple and elegant construction by Plato that does this very nicely, if we allow such a slight concession as two marks on the straightedge, or even one mark and the endpoint!

Abstract:We present a new model of a non-Euclidean plane, in which angles in a triangle sum up to $\pi$. It is a subspace of the Cartesian plane over the field of hyperreal numbers $\mathbb{R}^*$. The model enables one to represent the negation of equivalent versions of the parallel axiom, such as the existence of the circumcircle of a triangle, and Wallis' or Lagendre's axioms, as well as the difference between non-Euclidean and hyperbolic planes. The model has unique educational advantages as expounding its crucial ideas requires only the basics of Cartesian geometry and non-Archimedean fields.
Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:We use Herbrand's theorem to give a new proof that Euclid's parallel axiom is not derivable from the other axioms of first-order Euclidean geometry. Previous proofs involve constructing models of non-Euclidean geometry. This proof uses a very old and basic theorem of logic together with some simple properties of ruler-and-compass constructions to give a short, simple, and intuitively appealing proof.

Abstract:Two geometric constructions are considered in the context of analytic complexity. Using the first construction, on the set of analytic functions, we build a metric invariant under the action of the gauge group. With the help of the second construction, we obtain a necessary differential algebraic condition for membership of a function in the tangent space to the class of bivariate functions of analytic complexity at the point . From this result we show that the polynomial of degree 5 has analytic complexity 3.

Abstract:The Sylvester-Gallai Theorem, stated as a problem by J. J. Sylvester in 1893, asserts that for any finite, noncollinear set of points on a plane, there exists a line passing through exactly two points of the set. First, it is shown that for the real plane, the theorem is constructively invalid. Then, a well-known classical proof is examined from a constructive standpoint, locating the nonconstructivities. Finally, a constructive version of the theorem is established for the plane; this reveals the hidden constructive content of the classical theorem. The constructive methods used are those proposed by Errett Bishop.

Constructive projective extension of an incidence plane

Abstract:A standard procedure in classical projective geometry, using pencils of lines to extend an incidence plane to a projective plane, is examined from a constructive viewpoint. Brouwerian counterexamples reveal the limitations of traditional pencils. Generalized definitions are adopted to construct a projective extension. The main axioms of projective geometry are verified. The methods used are in accord with Bishop-type modern constructivism.

Abstract:The real projective plane has three well know isomorphic constructions: the extended euclidean plane, unit (hemi)sphere, and three dimensional vector space over the reals. In this paper we find the isomorphisms that map between these three constructions. Additionally we investigate their relationship to direction-sensitive photosensors which use lens(es) to transform light's direction to a position on a local plane. This transformation, done by lenses is a physical version of an isomorphism between projective plane constructions

Abstract:In this paper we will develop an axiomatic foundation for the geometric study of straight edge, protractor, and compass constructions, which while being related to previous foundations, will be the first to have all axioms written and all proofs conducted in quantifier-free first order logic. All constructions within the system will be justified to be feasible by basic human faculties. No statement in the system will refer to infinitely many objects and one can posit an interpretation of the system which is in accordance to our free, creative process of geometric constructions. We are also able to capture analogous results to Euclid's work on non-planar geometry in Book XI of The Elements. This paper primarily builds on Suppes' paper Quantifier-Free Axioms for Constructive Affine Plane Geometry and draws from Beeson's article A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry. By further developing Suppes' work on parallel line segments, we are able to develop analogs to most theorems about parallel lines without assuming an equivalent to Euclid's Fifth Postulate which we deem as introducing non-feasible constructions. In A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry, Beeson defines the characteristics such a geometric foundation should have to called constructive. This work satisfies these characteristics. Additionally this work would be considered constructive as Suppes defined it.

Abstract:Using concepts and techniques of bilinear algebra, we construct hyperbolic planes over a euclidean ordered field that satisfy all the Hilbert axioms of incidence, order and congruence for a basic plane geometry, but for which the hyperbolic version of the parallel axiom holds rather than the classical Euclidean parallel postulate.

Abstract:Kippenhahn discovered that the numerical range of a complex square matrix is the convex hull of a plane real algebraic curve. Here, we present an example of a convex set, which has a similar algebraic description as the numerical range, whereas the analogue of Kippenhahn's construction fails regarding isolated, singular points of the curve. This example prompted us to carefully review Kippenhahn's assertion and to highlight aspects of a complete proof that was achieved with methods of convex geometry and real algebraic geometry.

Abstract:The Newton line and the associated theorems by Newton and Gauss for tetragons and quadrilaterals are closely linked to some other theorems of Euclidean geometry: a theorem by Bocher on the existence of a nine-point conic of a quadrangle, a theorem by Shatunov and Tokarev, and a theorem by Anne. Abstract:For f : R 2 → R , let Γ R( f ) be a two‐dimensional algebraically defined graph, that is, a bipartite graph where each partite set is a copy of R 2 and two vertices (a , a 2 ) and [x , x 2 ] are adjacent if and only if a 2 + x 2 = f(a , x ) . It is known that Γ R(X Y ) has girth 6 and can be extended to the point‐line incidence graph of the classical real projective plane. However, it was unknown whether there exists f ∈ R[X , Y ] such that Γ R( f ) has girth 6 and is nonisomorphic to Γ R(X Y ) . This paper answers this question affirmatively and thus provides a construction of a nonclassical real projective plane. This paper also studies the diameter and girth of Γ R( f ) for families of bivariate functions f .
