Abstract:Given Tarski’s version of Euclidean straightedge and compass geometry, it is shown how to express construction theorems, and shown that for any purely existential theorem there is a construction theorem implying it. Some related results and open questions are then briefly described.

Abstract:In this paper we will develop an axiomatic foundation for the geometric study of straight edge, protractor, and compass constructions, which while being related to previous foundations, will be the first to have all axioms written and all proofs conducted in quantifier-free first order logic. All constructions within the system will be justified to be feasible by basic human faculties. No statement in the system will refer to infinitely many objects and one can posit an interpretation of the system which is in accordance to our free, creative process of geometric constructions. We are also able to capture analogous results to Euclid's work on non-planar geometry in Book XI of The Elements. This paper primarily builds on Suppes' paper Quantifier-Free Axioms for Constructive Affine Plane Geometry and draws from Beeson's article A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry. By further developing Suppes' work on parallel line segments, we are able to develop analogs to most theorems about parallel lines without assuming an equivalent to Euclid's Fifth Postulate which we deem as introducing non-feasible constructions. In A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry, Beeson defines the characteristics such a geometric foundation should have to called constructive. This work satisfies these characteristics. Additionally this work would be considered constructive as Suppes defined it.

Abstract:Of the great theories of classical mathematics, projective geometry, with its powerful concepts of symmetry and duality, has been exceptional in continuing to intrigue investigators. The challenge put forth by Errett Bishop (1928-1983), "Every theorem proved with nonconstructive methods presents a challenge: to find a constructive version, and to give it a constructive proof", motivates a large portion of current constructive work. This challenge can be answered by discovering the hidden constructive content of classical projective geometry. Here we briefly outline, with few details, recent constructive work on the real projective plane, and projective extensions of affine planes. Special note is taken of a number of interesting open problems that remain; these show that constructive projective geometry is still a theory very much in need of further effort. The Bishop-type constructive mathematics discussed in the present paper proceeds from a viewpoint well-nigh opposite that of either formal logic or recursive function theory.

Abstract:THE classical Euclidean constructions allow only the unmarked straightedge and a pair of compasses, now commonly called “a compass.” With these limited tools we can carry through the many beautiful constructions of elementary geometry. A lack of understanding of the “rules of the game” leads to such confused and incorrect statements as “It is impossible to trisect an angle.” But of course we can trisect a right angle; and as for trisecting any angle, there is a simple and elegant construction by Plato that does this very nicely, if we allow such a slight concession as two marks on the straightedge, or even one mark and the endpoint!

Abstract:Constructive-deductive method for plane Euclidean geometry is proposed and formalized within Coq Proof Assistant. This method includes both postulates that describe elementary constructions by idealized geometric tools (pencil, straightedge and compass), and axioms that describes properties of basic geometric figures (points, lines, circles and triangles). The proposed system of postulates and axioms can be considered as a constructive version of the Hilbert's formalization of plane Euclidean geometry.

Abstract:We use Herbrand's theorem to give a new proof that Euclid's parallel axiom is not derivable from the other axioms of first-order Euclidean geometry. Previous proofs involve constructing models of non-Euclidean geometry. This proof uses a very old and basic theorem of logic together with some simple properties of ruler-and-compass constructions to give a short, simple, and intuitively appealing proof.

Abstract:It is well known that several classical geometry problems (e.g., angle trisection) are unsolvable by compass and straightedge constructions. But what kind of object is proven to be non-existing by usual arguments? These arguments refer to an intuitive idea of a geometric construction as a special kind of an `algorithm' using restricted means (straightedge and/or compass). However, the formalization is not obvious, and different descriptions existing in the literature are far from being complete and clear. Abstract:The Sylvester-Gallai Theorem, stated as a problem by J. J. Sylvester in 1893, asserts that for any finite, noncollinear set of points on a plane, there exists a line passing through exactly two points of the set. First, it is shown that for the real plane, the theorem is constructively invalid. Then, a well-known classical proof is examined from a constructive standpoint, locating the nonconstructivities. Finally, a constructive version of the theorem is established for the plane; this reveals the hidden constructive content of the classical theorem. The constructive methods used are those proposed by Errett Bishop.

Abstract:In order to state the theorem in the title formally and to review its rigorous proof, we extend and make more precise the Uspenskiy-Shen-Akopyan-Fedorov model of Euclidean constructions with arbitrary points; we also introduce formalizations for infinite configurations and for the projective plane. We exemplify the proof method by simpler and not so well known results that it is impossible to construct the unit length, or a given point, by compass and straightedge from nothing by means of classical arbitrary points. On the other hand we construct any given point by compass and straightedge from nothing by means of arbitrary points determined by horizontal segments. We quote a "proof" of Hilbert's theorem from the literature and explain why it is problematic. We rigorously prove Hilbert's theorem and present three variants of it, the last one for the projective plane.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">The geometric constructions obtained with only straightedge and compass are famous and play a special role in the development of geometry. On the one hand, the constructibility of figures is a key ingredient in Euclid geometry and, on the other hand, unconstructibility gave birth to famous open problems of the ancient Greece which were unlocked only in the nineteenth century using discoveries in algebra. This paper discusses the mechanization of straightedge and compass constructions. It focuses on the algebraic approaches and presents two methods which are implemented; one is due to Lebesgue and the other one was jointly designed by Gao and Chou. Some links between the algebraic approach of constructions and synthetic geometry are described.</p>

Abstract:Minding's most celebrated result is his namesake theorem of 1839 which established that all surfaces having the same constant curvature must be locally isometric. Today, Minding's theorem is a staple in differential geometry textbooks. But, to the best of our knowledge, all published proofs of it, inclusive of Minding's original argument are existential in nature. In this note, we give a constructive proof of Minding's theorem in the flat case. The proof requires only some basic facts about harmonic functions and complex analytic functions.

Towards an Independent Version of Tarski's System of Geometry

Abstract:In 1926-1927, Tarski designed a set of axioms for Euclidean geometry which reached its final form in a manuscript by Schwabhäuser, Szmielew and Tarski in 1983. The differences amount to simplifications obtained by Tarski and Gupta. Gupta presented an independent version of Tarski's system of geometry, thus establishing that his version could not be further simplified without modifying the axioms. To obtain the independence of one of his axioms, namely Pasch's axiom, he proved the independence of one of its consequences: the previously eliminated symmetry of betweenness. However, an independence model for the non-degenerate part of Pasch's axiom was provided by Szczerba for another version of Tarski's system of geometry in which the symmetry of betweenness holds. This independence proof cannot be directly used for Gupta's version as the statements of the parallel postulate differ.

Abstract:This book is an introductory course to basic commutative algebra with a particular emphasis on finitely generated projective modules. We adopt the constructive point of view, with which all existence theorems have an explicit algorithmic content content. In particular, when a theorem affirms the existence of an object -- the solution of a problem -- a construction algorithm of the object can always be extracted from the given proof. We revisit with a new and often simplifying eye several abstract classical theories. In particular, we review theories which did not have any algorithmic content in their general natural framework, such as Galois theory, the Dedekind domains, the finitely generated projective modules or the Krull dimension.

A Machine-Checked Direct Proof of the Steiner-Lehmus Theorem

Abstract:A direct proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem has eluded geometers for over 170 years. The challenge has been that a proof is only considered direct if it does not rely on reductio ad absurdum. Thus, any proof that claims to be direct must show, going back to the axioms, that all of the auxiliary theorems used are also proved directly. In this paper, we give a proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem that is guaranteed to be direct. The evidence for this claim is derived from our methodology: we have formalized a constructive axiom set for Euclidean plane geometry in a proof assistant that implements a constructive logic and have built the proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem on this constructive foundation.

Abstract:The constructive approach to mathematics has the advantage that witnesses can be extracted from statements of existence and theorems can be unwound to give algorithms. Even better, constructive theorems can be interpreted in any topos, giving many different results for the price of one. On the other hand, you might have heard that fundamental results from topology such as Tychonoff's theorem or even the intermediate value theorem do not hold constructively, which can make the price of constructive theorems seem rather steep. However, almost all of these pathologies disappear if we take the pointfree approach to topology, in which spaces are studied algebraically and logically through their lattices of opens without reference to a predefined underlying set of points. In fact, this perspective also sheds light on aspects of constructive mathematics that might at first appear to have little to do with topology. These notes provide a gentle introduction to the main aspects of constructive pointfree topology and some of its applications.

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:We give an analysis and generalizations of some long-established constructive completeness results in terms of categorical logic and pre-sheaf and sheaf semantics. The purpose is in no small part conceptual and organizational: from a few basic ingredients arises a more unified picture connecting constructive completeness with respect to Tarski semantics, to the extent that it is available, with various completeness theorems in terms of presheaf and sheaf semantics (and thus with Kripke and Beth semantics). From this picture are obtained both ("reverse mathematical") equivalence results and new constructive completeness theorems; in particular, the basic set-up is flexible enough to obtain strong constructive completeness results for languages of arbitrary size and languages for which equality between the elements of the signature is not decidable.

Abstract:Abstract From a sociological point of view, pre-Modern “non-theoretical geometry” is not adequately,described,as merely,“practical”. The “practical geometry” we find in written treatises is mostly that of “scribal” environments, and aims at calculating lengths, areas or volumes from already performed measurements. As a rule it is not interested in geometrical construction, nor in the making of measurements – the fields, broadly speaking, of master builders/architects and,surveyors. The paper discusses two cases – one fairly well-established, another more conjectural,– where,none,the less “scribal” practical geometry,does reveal traces of (very simple) geometrical,construction. Both of these concern,the “long run”, connecting Old Babylonian, classical ancient and late medieval material. A final instance,of weak,communication,between,“scribal” and “surveying” geometry,is located in thirteenth-fourteenth33-century France.
