Abstract:We investigate several topics of the geometry on real Cayley-Klein spaces. An important concern for us is to define a distance function on the projective space in such a way that the distance between two anisotropic subspaces of the same dimension can be easily calculated and case distinctions are avoided as far as possible.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.04625" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04625">arXiv:2008.04625</a>] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.

Abstract:We introduce a theory of relative tangency for projective algebraic varieties. The dual variety $X_Z^\vee$ of a variety $X$ relative to a subvariety $Z$ is the set of hyperplanes tangent to $X$ at a point of $Z$. We also introduce the concept of polar classes of $X$ relative to $Z$. We explore the duality of varieties of low rank matrices relative to special linear sections. In this framework, we study the critical points of the Euclidean Distance function from a data point to $X$, lying on $Z$. The locus where the number of such conditional critical points is positive is called the ED data locus of $X$ given $Z$. The generic number of such critical points defines the conditional ED degree of $X$ given $Z$. We show the irreducibility of ED data loci, and we compute their dimensions and degrees in terms of relative characteristic classes.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to study the geometry of the connected unit component of the real general linear Lie group $4$ dimensional $G_0$ as a Lorentzian and flat affine manifold. As the group $G_0$ is naturally equipped with a bi-invariant Hessian metric $k^+$, relative to a bi-invariant flat affine structure $\nabla$, we examine both structures and the relationships between them. Both structures are defined using the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the first one through the trace $k(u,v):=\mathrm{trace}(u\circ v)$ and the second by the composition $\nabla_{u^+}v^+:=(u\circ v)^+$, where $u,v\in\mathfrak{g}$. The curvatures, tidal force, and Jacobi vector fields of $(G_0, k^+)$ are determined in Section 1. Section 2 discusses the causal structure of $k^+$, while Section 3 focuses on the developed map relative to $\nabla$ in the sense of C. Ehresmann.

A Constructive Real Projective Plane

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a Kähler manifold with complex structure $J$ and Kähler metric $g$. A c-projective vector field is a vector field on $M$ whose flow sends $J$-planar curves to $J$-planar curves, where $J$-planar curves are analogs of what (unparametrised) geodesics are for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds (without complex structure). The c-projective symmetry algebras of Kähler surfaces with essential (i.e., non-affine) c-projective vector fields are computed.

Abstract:We show that the standard definitions of Sasaki structures have elegant and simplifying interpretations in terms of projective differential geometry. For Sasaki-Einstein structures we use projective geometry to provide a resolution of such structures into geometrically less rigid components; the latter elemental components are separately, complex, orthogonal, and symplectic holonomy reductions of the canonical projective tractor/Cartan connection. This leads to a characterisation of Sasaki-Einstein structures as projective structures with certain unitary holonomy reductions. As an immediate application, this is used to describe the projective compactification of indefinite (suitably) complete non-compact Sasaki-Einstein structures and to prove that the boundary at infinity is a Fefferman conformal manifold that thus fibres over a nondegenerate CR manifold (of hypersurface type). We prove that this CR manifold coincides with the boundary at infinity for the c-projective compactification of the Kähler-Einstein manifold that arises, in the usual way, as a leaf space for the defining Killing field of the given Sasaki-Einstein manifold. A procedure for constructing examples is given. The discussion of symplectic holonomy reductions of projective structures leads us moreover to a new and simplifying approach to contact projective geometry. This is of independent interest and is treated in some detail.

Abstract:In this paper we combine methods from projective geometry, Klein's model, and Clifford algebra. We develop a Clifford algebra whose Pin group is a double cover of the group of regular projective transformations. The Clifford algebra we use is constructed as homogeneous model for the five-dimensional real projective space $P^5(\mathbb{R})$ where Klein's quadric $M_2^4$ defines the quadratic form. We discuss all entities that can be represented naturally in this homogeneous Clifford algebra model. Projective automorphisms of Klein's quadric induce projective transformations of $P^3(\mathbb{R})$ and vice versa. Cayley-Klein geometries can be represented by Clifford algebras, where the group of Cayley-Klein isometries is given by the Pin group of the corresponding Clifford algebra. Therefore, we examine the versor group and study the correspondence between versors and regular projective transformations represented as $4\times 4$ matrices. Furthermore, we give methods to compute a versor corresponding to a given projective transformation.

A geometric take on Kostant's Convexity Theorem

Abstract:Given a compact Lie group $G$ and an orthogonal $G$-representation $V$, we give a purely metric criterion for a closed subset of the orbit space $V/G$ to have convex pre-image in $V$. In fact, this also holds with the natural quotient map $V\to V/G$ replaced with an arbitrary submetry $V\to X$. In this context, we introduce a notion of "fat section" which generalizes polar representations, representations of non-trivial copolarity, and isoparametric foliations. We show that Kostant's Convexity Theorem partially generalizes from polar representations to submetries with a fat section, and give examples illustrating that it does not fully generalize to this situation.

Abstract:Conics in the Euclidean space have been known for their geometrical beauty and also for their power to model several phenomena in real life. It usually happens that when thinking about the conics in a semi-Riemannian manifold, the equations and the graphs that come to mind are those of the quadratic Euclidean equations. For example, a circle is always perceived like a closed curve. We study the geometry of the conics in the semi-Riemannian Minkowski spacetime, and interpret each equation with Euclidean eyes. By defining an extended geometric completeness for conics, we will show that the conic completeness of conics can be changed through a Euclidean mirror.

Exploiting degeneracy in projective geometric algebra

Abstract:The last two decades, since the seminal work of Selig, has seen projective geometric algebra (PGA) gain popularity as a modern coordinate-free framework for doing classical Euclidean geometry and other Cayley-Klein geometries. This framework is based upon a degenerate Clifford algebra, and it is the purpose of this paper to delve deeper into its internal algebraic structure and extract meaningful information for the purposes of PGA. This includes exploiting the split extension structure to realise the natural decomposition of elements of this Clifford algebra into Euclidean and ideal parts. This leads to a beautiful demonstration of how Playfair's axiom for affine geometry arises from the ambient degenerate quadratic space. The highlighted split extension property of the Clifford algebra also corresponds to a splitting of the group of units and the Lie algebra of bivectors. Central to these results is that the degenerate Clifford algebra $\mathrm{Cl}(V)$ is isomorphic to the twisted trivial extension $\mathrm{Cl}(V/\langle e_0\rangle)\ltimes_\alpha\mathrm{Cl}(V/\langle e_0\rangle)$, where $e_0$ is a degenerate vector and $\alpha$ is the grade-involution.

Abstract:We study the limit geometry of complete projective special real manifolds. By limit geometry we mean the limit of the evolution of the defining polynomial and the centro-affine fundamental form along certain curves that leave every compact subset of the initial complete projective special real manifold. We obtain a list of possible limit geometries, which are themselves complete projective special real manifolds, and find a lower bound for the dimension of their respective symmetry groups. We further show that if the initial manifold has regular boundary behaviour, every possible limit geometry is isomorphic to $\mathbb{R}_{>0}\ltimes\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$.

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. On the geometry of some strata of uni-singular curves

Abstract:We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated. As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cases. Then we present some cases of enumeration of curves with two singular points, one of them being a node.

Abstract:We study the geometry of a weak Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of compact spacelike Cauchy hypersurfaces in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We show that the geodesic distance (i.e. the infimum of lengths of paths between two given points) is positive, and that the sectional curvature is well defined and non-positive.
