Abstract:This book is a regular textbook of analytical geometry covering vector algebra and its applications to describing straight lines, planes, and quadrics in two and three dimensions. The stress is made on vector algebra by using skew-angular coordinates and by introducing some notations and prerequisites for understanding tensors. The book is addressed to students specializing in mathematics, physics, engineering, and technologies and to students of other specialities where educational standards require learning this subject.

Abstract:The book is a unique phenomenon in Russian geometry education. It was first published in 1892; there have been more than 40 revised editions, and dozens of millions of copies (by these parameters it is trailing only Euclid's Elements). Our edition is based on 41st edition (the stable edition of Nil Aleksandrovich Glagolev; it's been in public domain since 2015). At a few places we reverted changes to the earlier editions; we also made more accurate historical remarks.

Having proposed the projects come from actual engineering requirement to the students, teachers instruct them to study on their own initiative, find the solution to the subject using all existing information, cooperate with others to take part in the research actively, describe their schemes and discuss with other group. This instructional mode has taken very important part in cultivating the capabilities of studying and development, analyzing and resolving into engineering questions in creative ways of the students.

I try to demonstrate that relativity does not contradict common sense; on the contrary, it follows from common sense logically. I discuss Minkowski space-time geometry in some detail. Geometrical approach, with few simple formulas but many pictures, makes results of the theory intuitively obvious.

Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

Abstract:This book is expository and is in Russian (sample English translation of two pages is given). It is shown how in the course of solution of interesting geometric problems (close to applications) naturally appear different notions of curvature, which distinguish given geometry from the 'ordinary' one. Direct elementary definitions of these notions are presented. The book is accessible for students familiar with analysis of several variables, and could be an interesting easy reading for professional mathematicians. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to serious mathematical education.

Abstract:TEXT-BOOKS in this country which deal with the practical applications of geometry naturally follow the South Kensington division of the Board of Education, a department of the public service which has always taken a leading part in the spread of this branch of knowledge. The department has two distinct syllabuses, one for the guidance of art classes, the other for science. Both syllabuses have quite recently been revised and considerably extended, and are well abreast of the times. Although the two schemes have parts in common, there is an increasing tendency for them to develop along divergent lines. Thus for art students one section of geometry to which great attention is paid is that relating to decorative geometrical designs, the study of which requires the drawing of many inscribed and circumscribed figures, patterns, &c. For science students this branch is of comparatively little interest. On the other hand, the geometry of vectors, a subject of first importance in science, has little attraction for the artist. Again, a student of science finds great use for his graphical constructions in the making of numerical computations, and the subject for him is becoming more quantitative in character. It is thus inadvisable to compile a textbook which shall endeavour to meet the wants of both classes of students; the first two books under review are written for science classes, and are adapted to the first stage of the revised South Kensington syllabus in Science Subject I.

Abstract:The following is an exposition of a course of algebra that Prof. Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Zykov (1922-2013) distributed among the participants of his seminar in graph theory not far away from Odessa, Ukraine, on September, 1991. It is a privilege for me to be able to reproduce, with some good additions, the English version of this remarkable course that he designed carefully over several years with the help of other colleagues and with the only purpose of making the science of algebra more accessible to the less gifted student. Prof. Zykov was an admirable person and a very clever mathematician and scientist. His scientific interests were wide: from the mathematical sciences at any level and in any of their branches to the theory of relativity as I recall. He kindly wrote a review recommending the results of my doctoral dissertation, which was necessary for the approval to obtain a Ph.D. degree during the meeting of my defense. In that meeting, I was very nervous because I had in front of me fifteen professors all of them doctors of technical or mathematical sciences asking all sort of questions and whom I had to convince of the fact that my results were true. I am sure this algebra course played the role that Prof. Zykov, with his deepness of thought, had primarily intended, that is, one course designed with the right approach to help out many of his students.

Abstract:Computing education and computational thinking have gained increasing attention in education both as means to support the learning of other subjects, such as mathematics, science, and humanities, and as outcomes by themselves. This chapter proposes a focus on teacher knowledge of geometry for computer graphics used for virtual image manipulation and coding in the context of an online graduate course for teachers. Teachers were required to design tasks for their classrooms that incorporated the content of the course and to participate in an online discussion forum. These tasks, along with the discussion entries, are analyzed, and suggestions are provided for how to incorporate relevant geometrical content used in computer graphics. Teacher challenges to learn and incorporate this content in the classroom are addressed, along with recommendations for teacher education. The findings of this study are discussed in terms of teachers' knowledge for teaching geometry for computer graphics.
