Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:TEXT-BOOKS in this country which deal with the practical applications of geometry naturally follow the South Kensington division of the Board of Education, a department of the public service which has always taken a leading part in the spread of this branch of knowledge. The department has two distinct syllabuses, one for the guidance of art classes, the other for science. Both syllabuses have quite recently been revised and considerably extended, and are well abreast of the times. Although the two schemes have parts in common, there is an increasing tendency for them to develop along divergent lines. Thus for art students one section of geometry to which great attention is paid is that relating to decorative geometrical designs, the study of which requires the drawing of many inscribed and circumscribed figures, patterns, &c. For science students this branch is of comparatively little interest. On the other hand, the geometry of vectors, a subject of first importance in science, has little attraction for the artist. Again, a student of science finds great use for his graphical constructions in the making of numerical computations, and the subject for him is becoming more quantitative in character. It is thus inadvisable to compile a textbook which shall endeavour to meet the wants of both classes of students; the first two books under review are written for science classes, and are adapted to the first stage of the revised South Kensington syllabus in Science Subject I.

Abstract:To sum up, we have examined the various difficulties-mathematical, conceptual, and logical-involved in learning and teaching axiomatic geometry. Taking as a typical axiomatic approach one that couples Emil Artin's treatment of affine geometry with Choquet's handling of the basic order and orthogonality phenomena of Euclidean geometry, we have tried to identify these difficulties in some detail. We have noted that this particular approach isolates the graver difficulties, separating them from one another in such a way that they can be mastered by comparatively simple techniques. For both student and teacher the burden is shifted to the fuller understanding of certain fundamental concepts, such as that of a geometrical transformation, which permit making an early contact with algebra-specifically, with group theory-in the spirit of Descartes and Felix Klein. We have proposed an organization of the school program in geometry from grade K or grade 1 through grade 12 aimed at gradually acquainting the student with these basic concepts and their technical uses as they emerge from the persistent contemplation of the physical, mathematical, and logical facts. We have stated our conviction that by the 10th grade students should be prepared to understand the strategy and the significance of the axiomatic approach, and by the 11th and 12th grades to carry through that approach in adequate detail. We have taken explicitly into account the need to arrange the school geometry program in such a way that students can reach terminal points appropriate to their capacities, needs, and interests. We must emphasize that what has been presented here is no more than a rough outline, to be filled out on the basis of further psychological, mathematical and curricular investigations. I am confident that these suggestions can mature into a school geometry program not only far more significant intellectually and technically than those now commonly offered but also one easier to learn and to teach. This is not just a matter of personal belief, because many elements of the proposed program have actually been tried out in one form or another with success. What is now needed is a grand effort to assemble the tested and untested parts into an experimental whole.

Abstract:This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical geometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a "true" geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Such a basic understanding of the status of geometry around 1870 enables one to study the geometric works of Sophus Lie and Felix Klein at the beginning of their career in the appropriate historical perspective.

Abstract:Teaching mathematics as a STEM subject in this 21 st century must be challenging enough to inspire learning, especially in the basic schools. This also depends on the pedagogical content knowledge and skills of the teachers handling the subject. Therefore, there is a need to design modern instructional strategies for training future teachers handling the pupils at the primary schools. Flipped classroom approach is one of the emerging pedagogical strategies that has proven to be very efficacious in teaching almost all subjects. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the impact of flipped classrooms as a pedagogy in equipping the pre-service teachers with the knowledge and concepts of plane geometry, which happens to be one of the main branches of mathematics. A sample of 101 basic school pre-service teachers was purposively sampled for the study. A pre- and post-test design were used to gather quantitative data for analysis using a quasi-experimental approach. Based on the analysis of the results, the null hypothesis was rejected since there was a statistically significant difference in the pre-service teachers’ performance before and after the intervention. The study concluded that there was an improvement in performance due to the intervention. Therefore, the researcher recommends the flipped classroom approach as a formidable pedagogy for teaching pre-service teachers.

Abstract:Use of mathematics‐related literature can engage students' interest and increase their understanding of mathematical concepts. A quasi‐experimental study of two second‐grade classrooms assessed whether daily inclusion of geometry‐related literature in the classroom improved attitudes toward geometry and achievement in geometry. Consistent with the hypothesis, only the students in the classroom with a strong emphasis on geometry‐related children's literature showed a significant improvement in their attitudes about geometry over time. While both classes improved their geometry performance over the 4 weeks of the study, the class with a strong emphasis on geometry‐related literature improved significantly more (51.2%) than the control class (33.47%). Children's literature can provide a useful and interesting context in which students can develop their understanding of geometry.

Abstract:We consider the mathematical theory of geographical maps, with an emphasis on the eighteenth century works of Euler, Lagrange and Delisle. This period is characterized by the frequent use of maps that are no more obtained by the stereographic projection or its variations, but by much more general maps from the sphere to the plane. More especially, the characteristics of the desired geographical maps were formulated in terms of an appropriate choice of the images of the parallels and meridians, and the mathematical properties required by the map concern the distortion of the maps restricted to these lines. The paper also contains some notes on the general use of mathematical methods in cartography in Greek Antiquity and in the modern period, and on the mutual influence of the two fields, mathematics and geography. The final version of this paper will appear in Ganita Bharati (Indian mathematics).

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:Computing education and computational thinking have gained increasing attention in education both as means to support the learning of other subjects, such as mathematics, science, and humanities, and as outcomes by themselves. This chapter proposes a focus on teacher knowledge of geometry for computer graphics used for virtual image manipulation and coding in the context of an online graduate course for teachers. Teachers were required to design tasks for their classrooms that incorporated the content of the course and to participate in an online discussion forum. These tasks, along with the discussion entries, are analyzed, and suggestions are provided for how to incorporate relevant geometrical content used in computer graphics. Teacher challenges to learn and incorporate this content in the classroom are addressed, along with recommendations for teacher education. The findings of this study are discussed in terms of teachers' knowledge for teaching geometry for computer graphics.
