Abstract:Dimensionally stable and high level of conductivity is of importance for alkaline exchange membrane (AEM) applications. However, the main challenge for AEMs is to control swelling behavior and construct ion transport "high way" simultaneously. Here we report a series of self-crosslinked membranes using poly (aryl ether ketone) as rigid matrix and imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid as hydroxyl transporting groups. The obtained membranes possess anisotropic swelling behavior: no more than restricted 4% in-plane swelling ratio indicate excellent dimensional stability; while, obvious through-plane swelling guaranteed abundant water absorption in the hydrophilic domains, which benefited sufficient hydroxide ion dissociation and improved ion conductivity. The swelling ratio of through-plane can be more than tenfold of in-plane. This result quantifies the dramatic influence of flexible polymeric ionic liquid on specific swelling behavior of membranes for the first time. Moreover, the distinct microscopic phase separation endows the membranes possessing high ion conductivity (0.067 S cm(-1)). The introduction of long-chain polymeric ionic liquid not only facilitate continuous pathway, but also reduce the dependency on lambda (average hydration number vs. positive group). After treatment in alkaline conditions, the membranes still exhibit more than 8 MPa tensile strength.
Poly(olefin)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared Using Ziegler–Natta Polymerization

Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium (QA)-type polysulfone (PSf) anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with pendant carbonyl groups were synthesized by an environmentally friendly method. Low toxicity 3-chloro-2,2dimethylpropionyl chloride (CDPC) was chosen as an electrophilic reagent to introduce chloroalkyl groups to PSf, instead of highly toxic chloromethyl methyl ether. The experimental conditions were carefully optimized to avoid the Friedel-Crafts alkylation side reaction on the chloroalkyl group. After quaternizing with trimethylamine (TMA), AEMs were prepared by solution casting. The obtained AEMs showed good ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The alkaline stability of these AEMs was excellent; the AEMs can maintain 95% of their initial conductivity after immersion in a 1 M NaOH aqueous solution at 80 degrees C for 10 days. The reason for this outstanding alkaline stability was evaluated by NMR and density functional theory calculations. The most severe degradation pathway, the S(N)2 reaction, can be weakened by the competing reaction between OH- and carbonyl groups. The formed intermediate oxygen anion can decrease the possibility of SN2 by reducing the electro-static potential of the QA groups. Because of the reversibility of the reaction between OH- and carbonyl groups, QA groups can survive longer in strong alkaline conditions at high temperature. Also, the possibility of S(N)2 reaction on the aromatic polymer chain can be decreased because of the positive charge carrier, QA groups, which are not directly attached to benzyl groups. Hoffmann elimination can not happen because there was no hydrogen atom on the beta-position of QA group. These structural advantages of the synthesized AEMs suggest another strategy that the potential for generalisation to other AEM systems and to improve the alkaline stability of QA-type AEMs.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane (AEM) as a positively-charged polymer allows the transition of anions, block the cations, and has been widely used in the electro-desalination processes. Permselectivity, alkaline stability, and electric ohmic resistance on the AEM are critical issues determining the final desalination efficiency in an electro-desalination process. Here in this work, the AEM with sound desalination and alkaline stable character was fabricated from the aspect of functional group optimization, i.e., introduce into the 2, 6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene oxide (PPO) polymer matrix as the alternative of the conventional. The 1-naphthol derivatives, i.e., 2[dimethylaminomethyl] naphthalen-1-ol, and 2,7-bis [dimethylaminomethyl] naphthalen-1-ol as the functional groups provide conjugated pi-electron, which may increase the alkaline stability of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs), and thus guarantee its long-term stability when operating the electro-desalination process over the limiting current density condition. The innovative membranes perform lower area resistance 0.5-2.27 Omega cm(2) and well stability in the alkaline circumstance. In comparison to the commercial membranes (Neosepta AMX, standard grade), the obtained membrane presented comparable electro-desalination performance. The results indicate AEMs that functionalized by 1-naphthol derivatives can be a promising candidate for electro-desalination processes.

Abstract:Poly(alkyl-biphenyl pyridinium)-based anion exchange membranes with alkyl side chains were synthesized for permselective anion separation. By altering the length of the grafted side chain, the hydrophilicity and other attributes of the membranes could be controlled. The QDPAB-C5 membrane with the best comprehensive performance exhibited a Cl- ion flux of 3.72 mol m(-2) h(-1) and a Cl-/SO42- permselectivity of 15, which are significantly better than the commercial Neosepta ACS membrane. The QDPAB-C5 membranes with distinct microscopic phase separation structures formed interconnected hydrophilic/hydrophobic ion channels and exhibited excellent ion flux and permselectivity for other anionic systems (NO3-/SO42-, Br-/SO42-, F-/SO42-, NO3-/Cl-, Br-/Cl-, and F-/Cl-) as well. Furthermore, the influence of alkyl side chain length on the membranes' ion flux and permselectivity in electrodialysis was investigated, which may be attributed to the alterations in ion channels and hydrophobic regions of the membranes. This work provides an effective strategy for the development of monovalent anion permselective membranes.

AEMs serve a critical component in various electrochemical systems/devices [1-5]. Currently, increasing the hydroxide conductivity and enhancing the chemical stability of AEMs are the most challenging. Herein, I want to highlight endeavors in fabricating chemically stable and highly conductive AEMs to bring this discussion to a deeper level.

Abstract:A new class of alkaline anion-exchange membranes containing mobile ion shuttles is developed. It is achieved by threading ionic linear guests into poly(crown ether) hosts via host-guest molecular interaction. The thermal- and pH-triggered shuttling of ionic linear guests remarkably increases the solvation-shell fluctuations in inactive hydrated hydroxide ion complexes (OH(-) (H2 O)4 ) and accelerates the OH(-) transport.

Abstract:Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) are involved in a wide range of applications, including fuel cells and water electrolysis. A straightforward method for the preparation of efficient AEMs consists of polymer functionalization with robust anion-exchange sites. In this work, an aliphatic polyketone was functionalized with 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole through the Paal–Knorr reaction, with a carbonyl (CCO %) conversion of 33%. The anion-exchange groups were generated by the imidazole quaternization by using two different types of alkyl halides, i.e., 1,4-iodobutane and 1-iodobutane, with the aim of modulating the degree of crosslinking of the derived membrane. All of the membranes were amorphous (Tg ∼ 30 °C), thermally resistant up to 130 °C, and had a minimum Young's modulus of 372 ± 30 MPa and a maximum of 86 ± 5 % for the elongation at break for the least-crosslinked system. The ionic conductivity of the AEMs was determined at 25 °C by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), with a maximum of 9.69 mS/cm, i.e., comparable with that of 9.66 mS/cm measured using a commercially available AEM (Fumasep-PK-130). Future efforts will be directed toward increasing the robustness of these PK-based AEMs to meet all the requirements needed for their application in electrolytic cells.

Abstract:Chemical cross-linking anion exchange series membranes were prepared from linear engineering plastics poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) by conducting the processes of bromination and amination at both benzyl and aryl positions. Compared with the traditional technologies, the membrane route described in this paper has cancelled the chloromethylation process and thus, given up the use of chloromethyl methyl ether, which has been considered as a potential harmful toxicity material. The ion exchange capacity, water content, membrane potential and transport number of membranes were studied. The results show that the membrane properties are significantly affected by the bromination processes: benzyl-substitution will enhance the ion exchange capacity and water content, while the aryl-substitution will decrease the water content with approximately unchanged ion exchange capacity. By properly balancing them, a series of membranes can be obtained to comply with different industrial requirements, such as diffusional dialysis, electrodialysis, and water splitting processes.

Abstract:A major hindrance in the commercialization of alkaline polyelectrolyte‐based electrochemical energy conversion devices is the development of durable anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Despite many alkali‐stable cations that have been explored, the stability of these cationic moieties at the membrane scale is in the blind. Herein, we present a molecularly designed polyaromatic AEM with cationic moieties in an alternating manner to unbiasedly compare the alkaline stability of piperidinium and ammonium groups at the membrane state. Using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the pentyltrimethyl group is about 2‐fold more stable than piperidinium within a polyaromatic scaffold, either in ex‐situ alkaline soaking or in‐situ cell operation. This finding challenges the judgment extrapolated from the stability trend of cations, that is, the piperidinium‐functionalized AEM is more alkali‐stable than the counterparts based on quaternary ammoniums. Moreover, the deterioration mechanism of piperidinium moiety after being embedded in polyaromatic backbone is rationalized by density functional theory.

Abstract:A well‐designed architecture which originated from Stiff Bottle‐brush is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes. A well‐designed architecture is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs). A series of quaternized fluorene‐containing block poly(arylene ether sulfone ketone)s (QFPESK‐m‐n) is synthesized as the main chains, and grafted with comb‐shaped C8 long alkyl chains for the AEMs. By varying the hydrophilic segment' length, there has been a significant change in the microstructure as well as phase separation morphology of the membranes, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Hence the as‐prepared AEMs with moderate ion exchange capacities (IECs) show enhanced hydroxide conductivities in the range of 28.8―94.7 mS⋅cm−1 from 30 to 80°C. Furthermore, based on the block backbones and hydrophobic comb‐shaped alkyl chains, the AEMs show low‐level swelling ratios of 4.3% to 9.2% at 30°C and from 6.2% to 13.2% at 80°C, and superior ratios of conductivity to swelling. In addition, the QFPESK‐m‐n AEMs also depict acceptable mechanical properties, good thermal stability and an optimizable alkaline stability.
