Abstract:Dimensionally stable and high level of conductivity is of importance for alkaline exchange membrane (AEM) applications. However, the main challenge for AEMs is to control swelling behavior and construct ion transport "high way" simultaneously. Here we report a series of self-crosslinked membranes using poly (aryl ether ketone) as rigid matrix and imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid as hydroxyl transporting groups. The obtained membranes possess anisotropic swelling behavior: no more than restricted 4% in-plane swelling ratio indicate excellent dimensional stability; while, obvious through-plane swelling guaranteed abundant water absorption in the hydrophilic domains, which benefited sufficient hydroxide ion dissociation and improved ion conductivity. The swelling ratio of through-plane can be more than tenfold of in-plane. This result quantifies the dramatic influence of flexible polymeric ionic liquid on specific swelling behavior of membranes for the first time. Moreover, the distinct microscopic phase separation endows the membranes possessing high ion conductivity (0.067 S cm(-1)). The introduction of long-chain polymeric ionic liquid not only facilitate continuous pathway, but also reduce the dependency on lambda (average hydration number vs. positive group). After treatment in alkaline conditions, the membranes still exhibit more than 8 MPa tensile strength.
Poly(olefin)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared Using Ziegler–Natta Polymerization

Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.
A general strategy to enhance the alkaline stability of anion exchange membranes

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium (QA)-type polysulfone (PSf) anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with pendant carbonyl groups were synthesized by an environmentally friendly method. Low toxicity 3-chloro-2,2dimethylpropionyl chloride (CDPC) was chosen as an electrophilic reagent to introduce chloroalkyl groups to PSf, instead of highly toxic chloromethyl methyl ether. The experimental conditions were carefully optimized to avoid the Friedel-Crafts alkylation side reaction on the chloroalkyl group. After quaternizing with trimethylamine (TMA), AEMs were prepared by solution casting. The obtained AEMs showed good ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The alkaline stability of these AEMs was excellent; the AEMs can maintain 95% of their initial conductivity after immersion in a 1 M NaOH aqueous solution at 80 degrees C for 10 days. The reason for this outstanding alkaline stability was evaluated by NMR and density functional theory calculations. The most severe degradation pathway, the S(N)2 reaction, can be weakened by the competing reaction between OH- and carbonyl groups. The formed intermediate oxygen anion can decrease the possibility of SN2 by reducing the electro-static potential of the QA groups. Because of the reversibility of the reaction between OH- and carbonyl groups, QA groups can survive longer in strong alkaline conditions at high temperature. Also, the possibility of S(N)2 reaction on the aromatic polymer chain can be decreased because of the positive charge carrier, QA groups, which are not directly attached to benzyl groups. Hoffmann elimination can not happen because there was no hydrogen atom on the beta-position of QA group. These structural advantages of the synthesized AEMs suggest another strategy that the potential for generalisation to other AEM systems and to improve the alkaline stability of QA-type AEMs.

Abstract:A novel approach is proposed to design anion exchange membranes (AEMs) containing pendent imidazolium side chains with flexible ether-containing spacer by the Williamson etherification between chloromethylated polysulfone and as-synthesized hydroxyl-bearing imidazolium. The introduction of long flexible ether-containing spacer chains enhances the mobility of terminated imidazolium groups and ion interactions. It facilitates the formation of a good hydrophilic/hydrophobic micro-phase separation structure, which is confirmed by the scattering peak of SAXS. As a result, the membranes exhibit high conductivity and excellent anti-swelling ability. The membrane with IEC of 1.55mmolg−1 shows considerable hydroxide conductivity (72 mS cm−1, 60°C), low swelling ratio (7.3%, 60°C), and great tensile strength in hydrated state (43.4MPa, 20°C). The existence of long spacer chain also improved the alkaline stability. After immersion in 60°C, 1M KOH solution for 168h, hydroxide conductivity and tensile strength of the membrane remain constant. The ether-containing side chains fabricated in this work provides a universal promising method to balance hydroxide conductivity and dimensional and alkaline stability.

Abstract:Pendant type anion exchange membranes are currently believed to the state of the art membrane due to enhanced stability. Yet, challenge lies in the limited strategy to construct such structure. Herein, pendant type anion exchange membranes with flexible quaternary ammonium groups attached to poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) backbone via length-tunable spacers were successfully prepared by mild and one-pot Wittig reaction. The as-prepared membranes show restricted water swelling, high hydroxide conductivity and low methanol permeability at low ion exchange capacity due to spacer induced microphase separation. Among them, QPPO-SC6 exhibits highest hydroxide conductivity (from 37.6 mS/cm at 20°C to 99.5mS/cm at 80°C) and good chemical stability in alkaline environment at 80°C. The mechanical and thermal properties of these membranes were also investigated. Results prove that our strategy in preparing anion exchange membranes with flexible spacers has great application potential in anion exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.
Electron-Donating C-NH2 Link Backbone for Highly Alkaline and Mechanical Stable Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:Aryl-ether cleavage and benzylic quaternary ammonium (QA) group degradation are promoted by C═O groups in most commercial anion exchange membrane materials. Herein, a novel strategy of converting C═O groups to the electron-donating C-NH2 linkages in conventional poly(arylene ether ketone)s is proposed by reductive amination via Leuckart reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the model compound containing C-NH2 linkage exhibits much higher barrier heights for aryl-ether cleavage and QA group degradation by enhancing the electronic cloud density on both the ether-connected carbon and the benzylic carbon. The C-NH2 linkages also induce hydrogen bond networks in the membranes, which enhance intermolecular interaction and provide additional hydroxide transport sites. As a result, the C-NH2 linkage membranes exhibit excellent hydroxide conductivity (108.2 mS cm-1 at 80 °C) and tensile strength (48.4 MPa) with high elongation at break (50.8%). The C-NH2 linkage membranes also show outstanding alkaline stability with no detectable backbone degradation even in 4 M KOH at 80 °C for 400 h, which is at the top-level among the state-of-the-art main chain architecture AEMs. This study proposes a new strategy for the synthesis of highly stable AEMs based on electron-donating C-NH2 link backbone.
Side-chain Manipulation of Poly (phenylene Oxide) Based Anion Exchange Membrane: Alkoxyl Extender Integrated with Flexible Spacer

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are an important component in anion exchange membrane fuel cells, and their side chain structures have a significant impact on membrane performance. Here, we construct a series of poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO)-based AEMs with varied side chain structures and investigate the effects of alkyl or alkoxyl extenders (or "tail" of the cation) and spacers (or the link between backbone and cation head group) on AEM performance. Our investigations demonstrate that the simultaneous introduction of alkoxyl extender and spacer can significantly improve water absorption and ion conductivity of membrane; this is attributed to the good hydrophilicity of alkoxyl group and flexibility of spacer that benefit the formation hydrophilic domains. At an IEC (ion exchange capacity) of 1.13 mmol/g, the AEM containing both spacer and alkoxyl extender exhibits a hydroxide conductivity of 87.3 mS/cm (80 degrees C), which is much higher than that of other spacer-containing membranes at similar IECs. The H-2/O-2 single cell constructed with this membrane exhibits a good peak power density of 292 mW/cm(2) at 60 degrees C. In addition, the steric hindrance of the extender gives rise to higher alkali stability of the AEM than that of the membrane which does not have the extender. Our work provides a meaningful direction of side chain design which can effectively improve conductivity and alkaline stability of AEMs.
Fabrication of Dual-Functional Bacterial-Cellulose-Based Composite Anion Exchange Membranes with High Dimensional Stability and Ionic Conductivity.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are increasingly becoming a popular research area due to their ability to function with nonprecious metals in electrochemical devices. Nevertheless, there is a challenge to simultaneously optimize the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of AEMs due to the "trade-off" effect. Herein, we adopted a novel strategy of combining filling and cross-linking using functionalized bacterial cellulose (PBC) as a dual-functional porous support and brominated poly(phenylene oxide) (Br-PPO) as the cross-linking agent and filler. The PBC nanofiber framework together with cross-linking can provide a reliable mechanical support for the subsequent filled polymer, thus improving the mechanical properties and effectively limiting the size change of the final quaternized-PPO (QPPO)-filled PBC composite membrane. The composite membrane showed a very low swelling ratio of only 10.35%, even at a high water uptake (81.83% at 20 degrees C). Moreover, the existence of multiple -NR3+ groups in the cross-link bonds between BC and Br-PPO can provide extra OH- ion transport sites, contributing to the increase in ionic conductivity. The final membrane demonstrated a hydroxide ion conductivity of 62.58 mS cm(-1), which was remarkably higher than that of the pure QPPO membrane by up to 235.93% (80 degrees C). The successful preparation of the PBC3/QPPO membrane provides an effective avenue to tackle the trade-off effect through a dual-functional strategy.
Ether Spaced N-spirocyclic Quaternary Ammonium Functionalized Crosslinked Polysulfone for High Alkaline Stable Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:N-spirocyclic cations containing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) possess excellent alkaline stability, but poor mechanical and conductive properties due to the rigid N-spirocyclic structure and lack of flexible side chain structural design. In this work, a flexible ether spaced N-spirocyclic quaternary ammonium functionalized side chain is proposed, in which hydroxyl substituted N-spirocyclic cation provides active grafting site with chloromethylated polysulfone through Williamson etherification. The flexible ether-oxygen spacer promotes aggregation of the rigid spirocyclic cations and thus significantly improves conductivity. The uniformly in-situ thermal crosslinking between benzene rings and the residue chloromethyl groups in polysulfone greatly enhances mechanical properties of the membranes. Constrained ring conformation of N-spirocyclic cation, ether spaced benzyl-free side chain, as well as the OH- blocking crosslinked networks endow an excellent alkaline stability to the membranes. The ether spaced N-spirocyclic containing membranes exhibit well micro-phase separation structure, up to around 85.7 mS cm(-1) of hydroxide conductivity at 80 degrees C, around 10.5 MPa of tensile strength in hydrated state and around 95.6% conductivity retention after immersion in 1 M KOH at 80 degrees C for 720 h. The performance is among the best N-spirocyclic functionalized AEMs reported in the literature.
Hydroxide Conducting Membranes with Quaternary Ammonium Cations Tethered to Poly(arylene alkylene)s via Flexible Phenylpropyl Spacers

Abstract:Durable and high-performing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are central components in alkaline water electrolyzers and fuel cells. Here, we have pursued a synthetic strategy where heteroatom-free polymer backbones are functionalized with alkali-stable dimethyl piperidinium (DMP) cations via flexible spacers. We achieved this design by synthesizing a trifluorobenzophenone monomer carrying a piperidine group in the 4-position via a straightforward Friedel–Crafts acylation of 4-(3-phenylpropyl)piperidine. Polyhydroxyalkylation of this ketone and p-terphenyl, followed by N-methylation, generated a DMP-functionalized poly(p-terphenyl alkylene) (PpT-DMP) with excellent alkaline stability, e.g., less than 7% ionic loss after treatment in 7 M aq. NaOH solution at 90 °C for 240 h. A high OH– conductivity, up to 104 mS cm–1 at 80 °C, was reached at an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.79 mequiv g–1 and 53% water uptake. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed a distinct microphase separation into ionic and nonionic nano-domains. The Friedel–Crafts acylation method proved very versatile and was also employed to synthesize a bromoalkylated trifluorobenzophenone monomer from 1-bromo-3-phenylpropane, which gives access to a diverse range of AEM materials. Poly(arylene alkylene)s based on this monomer and p-terphenyl and dimethylfluorene, respectively, were prepared in polyhydroxyalkylation and subsequently functionalized with alkyltrimethylammonium and N-methyl-N-alkyl piperidinium cations, respectively. Especially, AEMs based on the former material showed a remarkably high conductivity, up to 175 mS cm–1 at 80 °C. In summary, we present a straightforward approach to synthesize trifluorobenzophenone monomers substituted with 4-propylpiperidine and propyl bromide groups, respectively, which enables the preparation of various heteroatom-free poly(arylene alkylene)s tethered with alkali-stable cations for high-performance AEMs.

Anion Exchange Membranes with Clusters of Alkyl Ammonium Group for Mitigating Water Swelling but Not Ionic Conductivity

Abstract:Crosslinked ionomers containing clusters of alkyl ammonium group at side chain was synthesized by attaching an unique amine (tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine) on poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) polymer backbone. These molecular structures show a dramatic enhancement in water resistance (low water uptake (9–13%) and dimensional swelling (4–6%) in water at room temperature) compared with non-cluster-shaped PPOs. Moreover, the temperature had less of an influence on the water uptake and swelling ratio of the membranes. The resulting anion exchange membranes exhibit good ionic (OH-) conductivities in water (up to 25.4mScm−1 at 25°C) and represent a new class of anion exchange membranes. A test of the alkaline stability of membranes (in 1M KOH at 60°C for 480h) showed hydroxide conductivity about 51% of the original conductivity and indicated that these membranes are good candidates for application in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). Membrane electrode assembly made from the as-fabricated membrane showed moderate fuel cell performance reaching peak power density 77mWcm−2 at 60°C in a H2/O2 alkaline fuel cell. This simplistic synthetic tactic enables the preparation of densely functionalized materials with the potential to meet the demands of AFCs.

Abstract:Poor alkali resistance and low ionic conductivity are the crux of the matter that hinder the commercialization applications of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, we designed and synthesized a range of poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO)-based AEMs with benzyl free side-chain type. After that, the influences of different cationic functional groups, such as quaternary ammonium, imidazole and piperidine, on the membrane performances were examined systemically. The introduction of ether bond-containing side chains to build micro-phase separation structures enhanced the conductivity of AEMs (64 mS·cm−1 at 80 °C). At the same time, the side-chain without benzyl structures effectively avoids the influence of electron withdrawing groups on PPO main chains. Moreover, the steric hindrance effect of the benzene ring can further alleviate the attack of OH−, thereby improving the alkali resistance of the membrane. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that a well-developed hydrogen bonding network was formed between ether linkages and water molecules in the side-chain structures, which enhanced the electrical conductivity of the membrane. Meanwhile, the prepared membranes owned a good water uptake and a certain dimensional stability. These results provide a basis for the subsequent enhancement of membrane performances.

Abstract:The cross-linked imidazolium functionalized anion-exchange membranes are in-situ prepared via reaction of chloromethylated poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) with 1,1'-(1,6-hexanediyl)bisimidazole and N-methylimidazole. The composite membranes of cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) with a small amount of modified graphene oxide grafted with octadecyl and propyl phenyl imidazolium could be further prepared. These membranes exhibit significantly high chemical stability and ionic conductivity (σ), marked by low methanol permeability, together with improved dynamic mechanical properties. The ionic conductivity of cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) reaches 2.09×10-2 S·cm-1 at 80 oC by introduction of 0.5 wt% loading of modified graphene oxide. This membrane also behaves an excellent chemical stability and σ can remain ca. 82% of the original value after immerged in strong alkaline medium (2M NaOH) at 60 °C for 500 h, which is almost the same as that (ca. 82%) of commercial Nafion 115 in acid medium (2M H2SO4) at 60 °C for 500 h. The cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) was characterized as a promising anion exchange membrane materials in fuel cell for its high ionic conductivity, chemical stability and low methanol permeability.

Abstract:A series of cross‐linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) base on poly (aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKS) with different contents of trimethylamine and 1‐vinylimidazole by brominating and grafting was prepared. The designed structures of PAEKS and AEMs were demonstrated by the 1H‐NMR and FT‐IR spectrum, respectively. TEM pictures confirmed that there are obvious microphase‐separated morphologies in CImTPAEKS membranes, which provided a mass of efficient ionic transport channels. The OH− conductivity of the CImTPAEKS membranes had 0.070 to 0.083 S/cm at 80°C. The 1‐vinylimidazole played a cross‐linked role in AEMs, improving the dimensional stability and alkaline stability of AEMs. The OH− conductivity of the CImTPAEKS membranes still had 0.051 to 0.058 S/cm after the alkaline test (2 M NaOH at 80°C for 15 days). Moreover, the cross‐linked membrane had prominent thermal stability. Based on these results, we are reasonable to believe that ClmTPAEKS membranes with excellent hydroxide conductivity and alkaline stability will be of great significance for the development of alkaline fuel cells.

Abstract:A new class of alkaline anion-exchange membranes containing mobile ion shuttles is developed. It is achieved by threading ionic linear guests into poly(crown ether) hosts via host-guest molecular interaction. The thermal- and pH-triggered shuttling of ionic linear guests remarkably increases the solvation-shell fluctuations in inactive hydrated hydroxide ion complexes (OH(-) (H2 O)4 ) and accelerates the OH(-) transport.

Abstract:To find the way to construct an ionic highway in anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), a series of side-chain-type alkaline polymer electrolytes (APEs) based on poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) polymer backbones were synthesized via Cu(I)-catalyzed click chemistry. The resulting triazole groups and quaternary ammonium (QA) groups facilitate the formation of a continuous hydrogen bond network, which will lead to high hydroxide conductivity according to Grotthuss-type mechanism. Microphase separation induced by long alkyl side chains contributes at the same time to further improving the hydroxide conductivity of the resultant AEMs. Hydroxide conductivity as high as 52.8 mS/cm is obtained for membrane TA-14C-1.21 (IEC = 1.21 mmol/g) with the longest pendant chain at 30 °C, and the conductivity can be increased to 140 mS/cm when the temperature was increased to 80 °C. Moreover, the corresponding water uptake is only 8.6 wt % at 30 °C. In the meantime, the membrane properties can be tuned by precisely regulating the hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio in the cationic head groups. Compared with AEMs containing triazole and quaternized trimethylammonium head groups, enhanced dimensional stability and mechanical properties are obtained by tuning side-chain chemistry. However, the alkaline stability of the membrane is not as stable as anticipated, probably because of the existence of the triazole ring. Further study will be focused on increasing the alkali stability of the membrane. We envisage that the side-chain-type APEs meditated by click chemistry bearing long hydrophobic side chains pendant to the cationic head groups hold promise as a novel AEMs material.
High-Performance Anion Exchange Membranes with Para-Type Cations on Electron-Withdrawing C═O Links Free Backbone

Abstract:As critical triggers, both the electron-withdrawing links and neighboring cationic groups induce and accelerate the aryl ether cleavage in the widely used aryl ether containing anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Herein, a novel alkaline stable polyelectrolyte is proposed by converting the electron-withdrawing C=O links in the widely used poly(aryl ether ketone) backbone into the electron-donating C-NH2 links, and then grafting faraway para-type cations by Leuckart-Menshutkin reaction without using noble metal catalysts. Contributions of the elimination of electron-withdrawing C=O links and graft of para-type cations to the excellent alkaline stability of the aryl ether containing polyelectrolytes are demonstrated through density functional theory, as the increasing electron cloud density on the ether-connected carbon atom elevates the activation energy barrier to OH- initiated aryl ether cleavage, and the para-type cation is more stable than the conventional ortho-type cation due to the sterical protection and low electrophilicity to benzylic carbon. By converting C=O to C-NH2 groups and then tuning the quaternization degree, the remaining C-NH2 groups in the polymer backbone could form hydrogen bonding networks to reinforce the membranes. The novel quaternized poly(aryl ether amine) membrane exhibits high conductivity (92.2 mS cm(-1) at 80 degrees C), excellent mechanical properties (48.2 MPa, 51.3%), and suppressed swelling ratio (12.8% at 80 degrees C). Excellent alkaline stability is also confirmed experimentally with no polymer backbone degradation even in harsh conditions (4 M KOH, 80 degrees C, 400 h), which is at the top level among the state-ofthe-art side chain and aryl ether-free types of AEMs.
