Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.
Poly (aryl Ether Ketone)/polymeric Ionic Liquid with Anisotropic Swelling Behavior for Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:Dimensionally stable and high level of conductivity is of importance for alkaline exchange membrane (AEM) applications. However, the main challenge for AEMs is to control swelling behavior and construct ion transport "high way" simultaneously. Here we report a series of self-crosslinked membranes using poly (aryl ether ketone) as rigid matrix and imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid as hydroxyl transporting groups. The obtained membranes possess anisotropic swelling behavior: no more than restricted 4% in-plane swelling ratio indicate excellent dimensional stability; while, obvious through-plane swelling guaranteed abundant water absorption in the hydrophilic domains, which benefited sufficient hydroxide ion dissociation and improved ion conductivity. The swelling ratio of through-plane can be more than tenfold of in-plane. This result quantifies the dramatic influence of flexible polymeric ionic liquid on specific swelling behavior of membranes for the first time. Moreover, the distinct microscopic phase separation endows the membranes possessing high ion conductivity (0.067 S cm(-1)). The introduction of long-chain polymeric ionic liquid not only facilitate continuous pathway, but also reduce the dependency on lambda (average hydration number vs. positive group). After treatment in alkaline conditions, the membranes still exhibit more than 8 MPa tensile strength.
Facile Preparation of Novel Cardo Poly(oxindolebiphenylylene) with Pendent Quaternary Ammonium by Superacid-Catalysed Polyhydroxyalkylation Reaction for Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:Novel anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with C-C polymer backbones, cardo fragments, flexible alkyl side chains and cyclic quaternary ammonium (QA) groups were designed and synthesized. Cardo poly(oxindolebiphenylylene) polymers with pendent cyclic QAs of different length (PDXIA-Br) were prepared by a superacidcatalysed polyhydroxyalkylation reaction and subsequent quaternion functionalization. This preparation process has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, simple operation, low cost and environmental friendliness. The morphology, water uptake (WU), ion conductivity, stabilities and the fuel cell performance were all investigated thoroughly. With the extension of the side chain length, both the microphase separation scale and the ionic conductivity increased. AEMs with longer pendent QAs exhibited decreased WU and better alkaline stability performance than did AEMs with shorter pendent QAs. PDXIH-OH (in OH- form) with a hexyl side-chain spacer showed a maximal conductivity of 73.6 mS cm(-1) M 80 degrees C. There was no degradation observed for POXIH-OH except for loss of 9.5% of QA groups after 1200 h in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C. In addition, the AEM fuel cell test performed a high peak power density of 476 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C.

Abstract:Poly(alkyl-biphenyl pyridinium)-based anion exchange membranes with alkyl side chains were synthesized for permselective anion separation. By altering the length of the grafted side chain, the hydrophilicity and other attributes of the membranes could be controlled. The QDPAB-C5 membrane with the best comprehensive performance exhibited a Cl- ion flux of 3.72 mol m(-2) h(-1) and a Cl-/SO42- permselectivity of 15, which are significantly better than the commercial Neosepta ACS membrane. The QDPAB-C5 membranes with distinct microscopic phase separation structures formed interconnected hydrophilic/hydrophobic ion channels and exhibited excellent ion flux and permselectivity for other anionic systems (NO3-/SO42-, Br-/SO42-, F-/SO42-, NO3-/Cl-, Br-/Cl-, and F-/Cl-) as well. Furthermore, the influence of alkyl side chain length on the membranes' ion flux and permselectivity in electrodialysis was investigated, which may be attributed to the alterations in ion channels and hydrophobic regions of the membranes. This work provides an effective strategy for the development of monovalent anion permselective membranes.

Abstract:A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) composite anion exchange membranes were fabricated depending on immobilized linear PVDF and cross-linked polyepichlorohydrin (PECH), 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, (DABCO) network through in situ synthetic pathway. A cyclic diamine (DABCO) was used as cross-linking agent and simultaneously improved the ion-exchange capacity by amination. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the composite membranes exhibited a dense and homogeneous structure. Successful formation of PECH-DABCO copolymer within the sIPN membranes was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The PVDF percentage and inherent properties of membranes such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake (WR), thermal stability, mechanical property, and area resistance were investigated to evaluate their applicability in electrodialysis (ED). The experimental results showed that the composite membrane maintained a good perspective for ED application.
Pyrrolidinium-functionalized Poly(arylene Ether Sulfone)s for Anion Exchange Membranes: Using Densely Concentrated Ionic Groups and Block Design to Improve Membrane Performance

Abstract:To design and construct high ionic conductive anion exchange membranes (AEMs), tetra-pyrrolidinium-based block poly(arylene ether sulfone)s were synthesized. Pyrrolidinium groups were densely and controllably introduced into the polymer scaffold using a novel tetra-functionalized monomer, 4, 4′-oxybis (2,6-bis(pyrrolidinyl-1-methyl) phenol) (OBBPYP), which was synthesized via the Mannich reaction. To obtain chemically stable pyrrolidinium cations, the alkaline stabilities of pyrrolidinium-based cationic model compounds with various N-substituted alkyl chains (methyl, ethyl, butyl) were studied using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, in which methyl as the N-substituent group exhibited the highest alkaline stability. Based on the results above, a targeted, well-controlled, multiblock structure AEM (QQBPES-2.4OH) with densely concentrated pyrrolidinium cations was obtained via an iodomethane quaternization reaction. The densely concentrated ionic groups provide ionic nanochannels for hydroxide conduction, and the hydrophobic polymer backbone is responsible for the critical membrane mechanical support. As confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), the QQBPES-2.4OH membrane exhibited a more obvious hydrophilic-hydrophobic microphase structure, compared to the random di-pyrrolidinium cation-based AEM (DQRPES-2.4OH) and tetra-pyrrolidinium cation-based AEM (QQRPES-2.4OH). Moreover, the QQBPES-2.4OH membrane exhibited considerably higher hydroxide conductivity, up to 68.0mScm−1 at 80°C, better flexibility and lower water swelling. The results of this work suggest a novel and scalable approach to the functionalization of polymers for AEMs.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.

Abstract:A well‐designed architecture which originated from Stiff Bottle‐brush is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes. A well‐designed architecture is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs). A series of quaternized fluorene‐containing block poly(arylene ether sulfone ketone)s (QFPESK‐m‐n) is synthesized as the main chains, and grafted with comb‐shaped C8 long alkyl chains for the AEMs. By varying the hydrophilic segment' length, there has been a significant change in the microstructure as well as phase separation morphology of the membranes, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Hence the as‐prepared AEMs with moderate ion exchange capacities (IECs) show enhanced hydroxide conductivities in the range of 28.8―94.7 mS⋅cm−1 from 30 to 80°C. Furthermore, based on the block backbones and hydrophobic comb‐shaped alkyl chains, the AEMs show low‐level swelling ratios of 4.3% to 9.2% at 30°C and from 6.2% to 13.2% at 80°C, and superior ratios of conductivity to swelling. In addition, the QFPESK‐m‐n AEMs also depict acceptable mechanical properties, good thermal stability and an optimizable alkaline stability.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane (AEM) materials were prepared from commercial polysulfone (PSf) by functionalization with tertiary amines via lithiation chemistry. By optimizing the reaction conditions, a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.81 could be achieved without evident polymer decomposition or cross-linking. The PSf containing pendent bis(phenyldimethylamine) substituents were then quatemized with CH3I and ion exchange reaction to provide bis(phenyltrimethylammonium) (PTMA) polymer with hydroxide-conductive properties. Flexible and tough membranes with various ion exchange capacities (IEC)s could be prepared by casting the polymers from DMAc solutions. The ionomeric membranes showed considerably lower water uptake (less than 20%), and thus dimensional swelling in water, compared with many reported AEMs. The hydroxide conductivities of the membranes were above 10 mS/cm at room temperature. The unusually low water uptake and good hydroxide conductivity may be attributed to the "side-chain-type" structures of pendent functional groups, which facilitate ion transport. Although the PTMA substituents on the AEM were found to have insufficient long-term stability for alkaline fuel cell application, the investigation gives some insight and directions for polymeric designs by postfunctionalization.
Side-chain-type Imidazolium-Functionalized Anion Exchange Membranes: the Effects of Additional Hydrophobic Side Chains and Their Hydrophobicity

Abstract:Ionic-conducive polymers with highly ordered, phase-separated structure are the promising materials used as anion exchange membranes (AEMs), thanks to their pronounced ion mobility. In this study, apart from imidazolium-functionalized hydrophilic pendants, additional octyl and perfluorooctyl-containing grafts were tethered to the polymer backbone and the resultant structure-morphology relationships were systemically investigated. The results revealed that the introduction of hydrophobic side chains as well as the corresponding hydrophobicity plays an important role in the formation of a phase-separated morphology in the membrane. AEMs containing perfluorooctyl-containing pendants (PPO-x-Im(y)8F(z)) exhibited a pronounced microphase-separated morphology with ion clusters of about 2-5 nm size and a spacing of similar to 6 nm, while the membranes with octyl pendants (PPO-x-Im(y)8C(z)) or no additional hydrophobic side chains (PPO-x-Im) only showed indistinct or no phase separation. In addition, PPO-x-Im(y)8F(z) AEMs showed better ion conductivity and suppressed water absorption, thereby exhibiting a good balance between water uptake and ion conductivity. The results of this study provide an efficient strategy to guide the architectural design of high-performance AEMs.
Base Stable Pyrrolidinium Cations for Alkaline Anion Exchange Membrane Applications

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of pyrrolidinium cation based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are reported. Pyrrolidinium cations with various N-substituents (including methyl, ethyl, butyl, octyl, isopropyl, 2-hydroxylethyl, benzyl, and cyclohexylmethyl groups) were synthesized and investigated with respect to their chemical stability in alkaline media. The influence of substitutions on alkaline stability of pyrrolidinium cations was investigated by quantitative H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and theoretical approaches. N,N-Ethylmethyl-substituted pyrrolidinium cation ([EMPy](+)) exhibited the highest alkaline stability in this study. The synthesized AEMs based on [EMPy](+) show promising alkaline stability in strongly basic solution. The study of this work should provide a feasible way for improving the alkaline stability of pyrrolidinium cation based AEMs.
Poly(fluorenyl alkylene)-based anion exchange membranes for high-performance water electrolysis

Abstract:Durable and high-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are a pivotal issue for the industrial application of AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE). In this study, a series of poly(fluorenyl alkylene) copolymers with different contents of biphenyls and p-terphenyls are synthesized for the high-performance AEMWE. The resulting AEM with an appropriate content of p-terphenyl well facilitates the microphase separation to get a well-defined microstructure that effectively improves the ionic conductivity and reduces the swelling ratio. The AEM with 20% p-terphenyl possesses an OH– conductivity of 155.7 mS cm−1, a water uptake of 128.7%, and a swelling ratio of 33.8% at 80 °C. Moreover, it also shows durable alkaline stability and retains 83.5% of cationic groups after immersing in 5 M NaOH at 80 °C for 1440 h. The assembled AEMWE cell achieves an excellent current density of 4.9 A cm−2 at 2 V in 1 M KOH (80 °C) and 2200 h of long-term constant current (1 A cm−2) operation with a low voltage rising rate of 77 μV h−1. After this long-term operation, only 13.7% of cationic groups are degraded in the AEM, showing excellent in-situ durability. Therefore, the developed AEMs should have great potential for applications in the AEMWE.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are employed as the gas separator and hydroxide ion conductor between the anode and the cathode of alkaline polyelectrolyte fuel cell (APEFC). Highly conductive and stable AEMs are urgently needed in order to achieve satisfactory fuel cell performance. Nevertheless, the low hydroxide conductivity remains major challenge that limits the development and application of APEFC. In order to improve the hydroxide conductivity of AEMs, highly ordered ion conducting channels must be constructed within the membrane matrix. In this study, an AEM with particular polymer structure was designed to achieve fine ion conducting channels by facilitating the hydrophilic-hydrophobic phase separation. Concretely, the side chain of this polyelectrolyte contains two quaternary ammonium groups and terminates with one long hydrophobic tail. Ascribing to the enhanced nano-phase separation ability, inter-connected ion conducting channels were observed by AFM as well as SAXS. A high hydroxide conductivity of 47mS/cm at 25°C and 85mS/cm at 80°C was achieved. In addition, when applied in an APEFC system, the synthesized AEM showed an outstanding peak power density of 369.3mW/cm2. Good alkaline tolerance, lowered water uptake and swelling ratio were also observed attributing to its carefully designed polymer structure.
A stable anion exchange membrane based on imidazolium salt for alkaline fuel cell

Abstract:A series of poly(arylene ether sulfone) containing bulky imidazole groups (PSf-Im-x) have been successfully synthesized based on a novel monomer 2,2′-bis-(2-ethyl-4-methyl-imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-biphenyl-4,4′-diol (EMIPO). After quaternized by n-bromobutane, these polymers are evaluated for alkaline anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The functional group, 2-ethyl-3-butyl-4-methyl-imidazolium, is employed in these new polymers for reason that attaching bulky groups around the imidazolium ring reduces the access of OH− to imidazolium, which enhances the alkaline stability of the membranes. The membrane with an IEC value of 2.07 possesses ionic (OH−) conductivity of 0.014Scm−1 at 30°C and 80% of the ionic conductivity is maintained after treatment in 1M KOH at 60°C for 144h.

Abstract:Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) are involved in a wide range of applications, including fuel cells and water electrolysis. A straightforward method for the preparation of efficient AEMs consists of polymer functionalization with robust anion-exchange sites. In this work, an aliphatic polyketone was functionalized with 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole through the Paal–Knorr reaction, with a carbonyl (CCO %) conversion of 33%. The anion-exchange groups were generated by the imidazole quaternization by using two different types of alkyl halides, i.e., 1,4-iodobutane and 1-iodobutane, with the aim of modulating the degree of crosslinking of the derived membrane. All of the membranes were amorphous (Tg ∼ 30 °C), thermally resistant up to 130 °C, and had a minimum Young's modulus of 372 ± 30 MPa and a maximum of 86 ± 5 % for the elongation at break for the least-crosslinked system. The ionic conductivity of the AEMs was determined at 25 °C by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), with a maximum of 9.69 mS/cm, i.e., comparable with that of 9.66 mS/cm measured using a commercially available AEM (Fumasep-PK-130). Future efforts will be directed toward increasing the robustness of these PK-based AEMs to meet all the requirements needed for their application in electrolytic cells.

Abstract:Fabrication of Porous Anion Exchange Membranes for ion transport and ionic selectivity has gained tremendous attention as a prospect for broad application in separation and energy conversion. In this work, we developed a novel strategy to fabricate highly charged hierarchical porous anion exchange membranes (AEM) with high performance. The membranes were prepared by coupling quaternized poly (2-dimethylaminoethanol-N-2,3-dimethylphenyl oxide) (QDAPPO) and an organosilane ionic liquid (IL). The electrostatic ionic interactions provide the porous system. When applied in acid recovery, the obtained membranes achieved a high separation factor of 86.5 with proton dialysis coefficient of 0.027mh−1 at 25°C. This unique efficiency is about 4.7 times that of commercial membrane. More interestingly, the strategy presents in this work tackle the great challenge of fabricating highly charged, thinner and dimensional stable AEM.
Dual-Side-Chain-Grafted Poly(phenylene oxide) Anion Exchange Membranes for Fuel-Cell and Electrodialysis Applications

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) usually suffer from the "trade-off" between ion conduction and stability. In this work, a series of dual-side-chain-grafted poly(phenylene oxide) AEMs were synthesized to explore how the side-chain architectures influence membrane performance. Our investigations suggest that the AEM containing both a long hydrophobic extender (attached to the cation's central atom) and a hydrophilic additional side chain (beside the cation) show high hydroxide conductivity (21.3 mS/cm at 30 °C) and good chemical and dimensional stability (90.5% conductivity retention after 1 M NaOH treatment at 60 °C for 528 h). In addition, when a tri-cation side chain and a hydrophobic side chain are incorporated simultaneously, the resulting AEM shows further improved conductivity and stability (50.0 mS/cm at 30 °C; 90.6% conductivity retention after 1 M NaOH treatment at 60 °C for 528 h); it also shows excellent electrochemical performance when applied in a fuel cell and an electrodialyzer, accomplishing a peak power density of 506 mW/cm2 and a current efficiency of 96.11%, respectively. Abstract:Novel aryl‐ether‐free polyaromatics anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with various cationic headgroups are synthesized. The study explored their effects on AEM properties, including hydroxide conductivity, water uptake, swelling ratios, and alkaline stability. Thin films prepared showed high conductivity, excellent stability, and dimensional stability, making them promising for electrolysis applications. Novel aryl‐ether‐free polyaromatics with different‐sized cationic headgroups tethered to the backbone are synthesized via superacid‐catalyzed polycondensations and subsequent Menshutkin quaternization reactions for potential application as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrolysis. Experimentally, the effect of four different heterocycloaliphatic quaternary ammonium cationic headgroups on the AEM properties, such as the hydroxide conductivity, water uptake, swelling ratios and alkaline stability, is fully explored. Thin films are prepared by spin‐coating these AEMs onto porous polytetrafluoroethylene substrates. With a high degree of quaternization, these new aryl‐ether free polyaromatic thin film AEMs achieved high conductivities and good mechanical stability. The highest hydroxide conductivity of 45 mS cm−1 is achieved with excellent alkaline stability and conductivity retention of 96% after 30 days in 1 m KOH at 80 °C. Due to the polytetrafluoroethylene substrates, the swelling ratios and water uptake are relatively small, which ensured the astute dimensional stability of these thin film AEMs. The combined effect of alkaline‐stable cationic headgroups, an aromatic backbone and a robust substrate led to a promising thin‐film AEM.

Abstract:Developing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior chemical stability and high conductivity is a considerable challenge for the practical application in AEM fuel cells. Herein, novel ionic crosslinked AEMs from methylpyrrolidinium functionalized poly (vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC-MPy) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) were fabricated through a facile and gentle method. The PVBC-MPy ionomer with a superior alkaline stability is used as the hydroxide conductor, while the sPEEK polymer plays the role as a macromolecular crosslinker. The PVBC-MPy exhibited good compatibility with sPEEK without phase separation. The obtained PVBC-MPy/x%sPEEK membranes displayed excellent oxidative resistance toward the attack of radicals as demonstrated by Fenton test. Meanwhile, AEMs also exhibited low dimensional swellings, improved mechanical strength, high conductivity and superior alkaline stability simultaneously. The PVBC-MPy/10%sPEEK membrane exhibited a weight retention rate of 86% after the Fenton test for 180 h, a volume swelling of 45%, a tensile strength of 25.6 MPa at room temperature, an anion conductivity of 28 mS cm−1 at 80°C, and retained its initial conductivity of 86.4% after immersing in 1 M KOH at 80°C for 410 h.

Abstract:Durable and high-performing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are central components in alkaline water electrolyzers and fuel cells. Here, we have pursued a synthetic strategy where heteroatom-free polymer backbones are functionalized with alkali-stable dimethyl piperidinium (DMP) cations via flexible spacers. We achieved this design by synthesizing a trifluorobenzophenone monomer carrying a piperidine group in the 4-position via a straightforward Friedel–Crafts acylation of 4-(3-phenylpropyl)piperidine. Polyhydroxyalkylation of this ketone and p-terphenyl, followed by N-methylation, generated a DMP-functionalized poly(p-terphenyl alkylene) (PpT-DMP) with excellent alkaline stability, e.g., less than 7% ionic loss after treatment in 7 M aq. NaOH solution at 90 °C for 240 h. A high OH– conductivity, up to 104 mS cm–1 at 80 °C, was reached at an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.79 mequiv g–1 and 53% water uptake. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed a distinct microphase separation into ionic and nonionic nano-domains. The Friedel–Crafts acylation method proved very versatile and was also employed to synthesize a bromoalkylated trifluorobenzophenone monomer from 1-bromo-3-phenylpropane, which gives access to a diverse range of AEM materials. Poly(arylene alkylene)s based on this monomer and p-terphenyl and dimethylfluorene, respectively, were prepared in polyhydroxyalkylation and subsequently functionalized with alkyltrimethylammonium and N-methyl-N-alkyl piperidinium cations, respectively. Especially, AEMs based on the former material showed a remarkably high conductivity, up to 175 mS cm–1 at 80 °C. In summary, we present a straightforward approach to synthesize trifluorobenzophenone monomers substituted with 4-propylpiperidine and propyl bromide groups, respectively, which enables the preparation of various heteroatom-free poly(arylene alkylene)s tethered with alkali-stable cations for high-performance AEMs.
