Poly(olefin)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared Using Ziegler–Natta Polymerization

Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.

Abstract:Alkaline fuel cells suggest solution for the problems of low methanol oxidation kinetics and methanol crossover, which are limiting the development of direct methanol fuel cells. In this work, a novel anion exchange membrane, quaternized poly(aryl ether oxadiazole), was prepared through polycondensation, grafting and quaternization. The ionic conductivity of as-synthesized anion exchange membrane can reach up to 2.79 x 10(-2) S/cm at 70 degrees C. Abstract:Alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are attracting much attention because of their potential use of nonprecious electrocatalysts. The anion-exchange membrane (AEM) is one of the key components of AEMFCs. An ideal AEM should possess high hydroxide conductivity and sufficient long-term durability at elevated temperatures in high-pH solutions. Herein, recent progress in research into the alkaline stability behavior of cations (including quaternary ammonium, imidazolium, guanidinium, pyridinium, tertiary sulfonium, phosphonium, benzimidazolium, and pyrrolidinium) and their analogous AEMs, which have been investigated by both experimental studies and theoretical calculations, is reviewed. Effects, including conjugation, steric hindrance e, σ-π hyperconjugation, and electrons, on the alkaline stability of cations and their analogous AEMs have been discussed. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of some key factors for the future design of novel cations and their analogous AEMs with high alkaline stability.

Abstract:Solid anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolytes are an essential commodity considering their importance as separators in alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells (APEFC). Mechanical and thermal stability are distinguished by polymer matrix characteristics, whereas anion exchange capacity, transport number, and conductivities are governed by the anionic group. The physico-chemical stability is regulated mostly by the polymer matrix and, to a lesser extent, the cationic head framework. The quaternary ammonium (QA), phosphonium, guanidinium, benzimidazolium, pyrrolidinium, and spirocyclic cation-based AEMs are widely studied in the literature. In addition, ion solvating blends, hybrids, and interpenetrating networks still hold prominence in terms of membrane stability. To realize and enhance the performance of an alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cell (APEFC), it is also necessary to understand the transport processes for the hydroxyl (OH-) ion in anion exchange membranes. In the present review, the radiation grafting of the monomer and chemical modification to introduce cationic charges/moiety are emphasized. In follow-up, the recent advances in the synthesis of anion exchange membranes from poly(phenylene oxide) via chloromethylation and quaternization, and from aliphatic polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol) and chitosan via direct quaternization are highlighted. Overall, this review concisely provides an in-depth analysis of recent advances in anion exchange membrane (AEM) and its viability in APEFC.

Polyketone-Based Anion-Exchange Membranes for Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Abstract:Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) are involved in a wide range of applications, including fuel cells and water electrolysis. A straightforward method for the preparation of efficient AEMs consists of polymer functionalization with robust anion-exchange sites. In this work, an aliphatic polyketone was functionalized with 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole through the Paal–Knorr reaction, with a carbonyl (CCO %) conversion of 33%. The anion-exchange groups were generated by the imidazole quaternization by using two different types of alkyl halides, i.e., 1,4-iodobutane and 1-iodobutane, with the aim of modulating the degree of crosslinking of the derived membrane. All of the membranes were amorphous (Tg ∼ 30 °C), thermally resistant up to 130 °C, and had a minimum Young's modulus of 372 ± 30 MPa and a maximum of 86 ± 5 % for the elongation at break for the least-crosslinked system. The ionic conductivity of the AEMs was determined at 25 °C by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), with a maximum of 9.69 mS/cm, i.e., comparable with that of 9.66 mS/cm measured using a commercially available AEM (Fumasep-PK-130). Future efforts will be directed toward increasing the robustness of these PK-based AEMs to meet all the requirements needed for their application in electrolytic cells.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane (AEM) is the heart of alkali electrolyte membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). To achieve high performance of AEMFC, high conductivity and alkaline stability of AEMs are highly desired. In the present work, we report the synthesis of ether-free polymers with different degrees of Y-shaped branching as AEM materials. Our investigations reveal that incorporating bulky, rigid, and Y-branching units into the polymer backbone can increase the free volume of the AEM and thus help build ion channels with lower hydroxide ion transport resistance. The resultant AEM showed a markedly improved ionic conductivity (116.92 mS/cm at 80 degrees C), while the simple linear type of the AEM only showed an ion conductivity of 63.63 mS/cm at a similar ion exchange capacity. With such an AEM, the peak power density of the H-2/O-2 single cell at 60 degrees C reaches 275 mW/cm(2).

Abstract:This article describes the preparation of cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) using a solvent free strategy. A novel casting solution is formed by dissolving cardo polyetherketone (PEK-C) as an essential polymer intensifier in a mixture of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and divinylbenzene (DVB) monomers without any organic solvent. Tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) is added to act as a cross-linker between VBC and PKE-C. Polymerization and quaternization are successively implemented to obtain the cross-linked AEMs, whose properties are found to compare well to many referenced AEMs. Apart from improving the compatibility of PEK-C with poly(VBC-co-DVB), TEPA also effectively enhances the charge density, ionic conductivity and alkaline stabilities of the resulting AEMs, whilst simultaneously inhibiting the swelling ratio. The optimal membrane shows an ionic conductivity of 76 mS cm−1 at 70 °C and 100% relative humidity and can remain stable after immersing in 2 mol dm−3 KOH solution for 168 h. A power density of 6 mW cm−2 is achieved in a H2/O2 fuel cell test at 50 °C with an optimal AEM but a non-optimized membrane electrode fabrication process. Generally, the novel method herein highlights an environmentally friendly and economically attractive method for the preparation of AEMs used in alkaline fuel cells.

Abstract:Development of anion exchange membranes with good dimension, chemical stability, high conductivity and long life-time simultaneously is still a challenge for practical application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, a mechanically and chemically stable poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) triblock copolymer based crosslinked membranes are designed, prepared and characterized. N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine is introduced into the membranes as the crosslinker and functional reagent, which exhibits the significant improvement in water uptake (less than 7%), swelling ratio (8–5%, greatly smaller than uncrosslinked membranes) and tensile strength (higher than 18MPa). The hydroxide conductivity (14.9mScm−1 at 30°C) of the obtained membrane is obtained due to hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation formed between the structure of crosslinking and quaternary ammonium groups. It demonstrates that incorporating stable crosslinking structure to polymer backbone greatly improves the chemical stability under Fenton and alkaline long-term tests. Furthermore, the peak power density of an H2/O2 single fuel cells reaches high peak power density of 416mWcm−2 at 0.514V. Based on these outstanding properties, the developed crosslinked membranes will be a promising candidate material for anion exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:Novel alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) containing pendant guanidinium groups are synthesized from poly(2, 6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) by benzyl bromination and subsequent reaction with 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylguanidine (PMG). The performances of the resultant guanidinium-functionalized-PPO (GPPO) AAEMs are controlled by tailoring the amount of guanidinium groups in the membrane matrix. The AAEMs exhibit high ionic conductivities (up to 71 mS cm−1 at room temperature); this stems from the high alkalinity (high pKa) of guanidinium hydroxide, which leads to an augmentation of both the number of dissociated hydroxides and water molecules. Furthermore, the GPPO AAEMs exhibit excellent thermal and alkali stabilities due to the presence of the π electron conjugated systems of the pendant guanidinium head-groups permitting the positive charge to be delocalized over one carbon and three nitrogen atoms. Specifically, the initial decomposition temperatures, from thermogravimmetric analyses of the GPPO AAEMs, are high at 270 °C, while the hydroxide conductivity of the AAEM with the most optimal properties remains stable in aqueous KOH (1 mol dm−3) solution for 192 h at 25 °C. A H2/O2 fuel cell test at 50 °C with a GPPO AAEM yielded a beginning-of-life peak power density of 16 mW cm−2.

Abstract:Novel self-crosslinked alkaline electrolyte membranes with high hydroxide ion conductivity, excellent dimensional stability and extraordinary solvent resistance stability are synthesized successfully without using any catalyst or separate crosslinker. Monitored by H-1 NMR analysis, the synthetic process of trimethyl poly (ether sulfone)-methylene quaternary ammonium hydroxide (TPQAOH) is found to be simple and efficient. The chemical and thermal stability of the synthetic SCL-TPQAOH-x membranes are better than other anion exchange membranes. At the same time, the hydroxide ion conductivity of SCL-TPQAOH-0.67 membrane reaches 33 mS cm(-1) with an IEC value of 1.07 mmol g(-1) at 80 degrees C, which complies with the requirements of alkaline fuel cells. This investigation also proves that self-crosslinking technology is a very simple and effective approach in improving the performance of alkaline electrolyte membranes. Abstract:Highly conductive anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are urgently desired for various electro-chemical technologies like fuel cells, flow batteries and electro-dialysis. Available strategies for enhancing the hydroxide conductivity of AEMs commonly focus on increasing the concentration of cationic sites, which, in turn, causes undesirable, excessive dimensional swelling and poor alkaline stability. To overcome this problem, a novel AEM with flexible branched ionic clusters was developed in this study. The improved cation density and cation mobility in the branched ionic clusters have resulted in highly ordered nano-scale channels for hydroxide ion transport and an excellent fuel cell performance of 266 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C. Low water uptake and restricted swelling ratio as well as good alkaline stability were also observed benifiting from its unique polymer architecture.

Abstract:In this study, poly(styrene-co-vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) with different styrene to vinyl benzyl chloride ratio (3:1, 1:1, 1:2) have been synthesized. The formation ofproducts was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (1H NMR). Then, anion exchange membranes were prepared by combination of poly(styrene-co-vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide) and poly (vinyl alcohol) The obtained membranes were evaluated for their own conductivity, anion exchange capacity, and thermal decomposition. The results showed that the anion exchange membrane produced from copolymer with styrene to vinyl benzyl chloride ratio 1: 2 exhibited good hydroxide conductivity of 7 mS/cm, ion exchange capacity was 0.65mmol/g and stability to 200oC. Abstract:Using the method of polysulfone chloromethylation followed by quaternization, an anion-exchange membrane is synthesized for water electrolyzers with alkaline electrolyte. The characteristics of this membrane such as porosity, electrical conductivity, and gas-tightness are determined. A comparative analysis of characteristics of this membrane as compared with a porous diaphragm (analog of ZifronPerl) is carried out. The results of tests of the membrane within an alkaline electrolyzer battery are compared with the results for the porous diaphragm based on unmodified polysulfone with a hydrophilic filler (TiO 2 ) and synthesized by phase inversion. The possible mechanism of the degradation of the main chain in quaternized polysulfone is presented. The ways are proposed for the further development of the technology of anion-exchange membranes based on polysulfone.

Abstract:Alkaline polyelectrolyte fuel cell now receives growing attention as a promising candidate to serve as the next generation energy-generating device by enabling the use of non-precious metal catalysts (silver, cobalt, nickel et al. ). However, the development and application of alkaline polyelectrolyte fuel cell is still blocked by the poor hydroxide conductivity of anion exchange membranes. In order to solve this problem, we demonstrate a methodology for the preparation of highly OH − conductive anion exchange polyelectrolytes with good alkaline tolerance and excellent dimensional stability. Polymer backbones were grafted with flexible aliphatic chains containing two or three quaternized ammonium groups. The highly flexible and hydrophilic multi-functionalized side chains prefer to aggregate together to facilitate the formation of well-defined hydrophilic-hydrophobic microphase separation, which is crucial for the superior OH − conductivity of 69 mS/cm at room temperature. Besides, the as-prepared AEMs also exhibit excellent alkaline tolerance as well as improved dimensional stability due to their carefully designed polymer architecture, which provide new directions to pursue high performance AEMs and are promising to serve as a candidate for fuel cell technology.

Abstract:This article provides an up-to-date perspective on the use of anion-exchange membranes in fuel cells, electrolysers, redox flow batteries, reverse electrodialysis cells, and bioelectrochemical systems (e.g. microbial fuel cells). The aim is to highlight key concepts, misconceptions, the current state-of-the-art, technological and scientific limitations, and the future challenges (research priorities) related to the use of anion-exchange membranes in these energy technologies. All the references that the authors deemed relevant, and were available on the web by the manuscript submission date (30th April 2014), are included.

Abstract:Abstract As a key component of low‐cost anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are far from commercial application, because of dissatisfactory alkaline stability and conductivity. Herein, a new insight is proposed to prepare high performance AEMs by constructing of confined ion channel. With an intermediate oligomer produced before the main copolymerization, novel poly(vinyl‐carbazolyl aryl piperidinium) AEMs with confined sub‐2‐nm ion channel are successfully prepared. The unique sub‐2‐nm ion channel enable membranes ultrahigh hydroxide conductivity of 261.6 mS cm −1 , and the state‐of‐the‐art chemical stability over 5000 h. Moreover, the AEMs also exhibit good mechanical stability with lower water uptake and dimensional swelling. Based on the as‐prepared AEMs and ionomer, fuel cells exhibit outstanding peak power density of 1.8 and 0.2 W cm −2 with Pt‐based catalysts and completely non‐precious metal catalysts, respectively.
