Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.
Anion exchange membranes with branched ionic clusters for fuel cells

Abstract:Highly conductive anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are urgently desired for various electro-chemical technologies like fuel cells, flow batteries and electro-dialysis. Available strategies for enhancing the hydroxide conductivity of AEMs commonly focus on increasing the concentration of cationic sites, which, in turn, causes undesirable, excessive dimensional swelling and poor alkaline stability. To overcome this problem, a novel AEM with flexible branched ionic clusters was developed in this study. The improved cation density and cation mobility in the branched ionic clusters have resulted in highly ordered nano-scale channels for hydroxide ion transport and an excellent fuel cell performance of 266 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C. Low water uptake and restricted swelling ratio as well as good alkaline stability were also observed benifiting from its unique polymer architecture.

Abstract:Alkaline polyelectrolyte fuel cell now receives growing attention as a promising candidate to serve as the next generation energy-generating device by enabling the use of non-precious metal catalysts (silver, cobalt, nickel et al. ). However, the development and application of alkaline polyelectrolyte fuel cell is still blocked by the poor hydroxide conductivity of anion exchange membranes. In order to solve this problem, we demonstrate a methodology for the preparation of highly OH − conductive anion exchange polyelectrolytes with good alkaline tolerance and excellent dimensional stability. Polymer backbones were grafted with flexible aliphatic chains containing two or three quaternized ammonium groups. The highly flexible and hydrophilic multi-functionalized side chains prefer to aggregate together to facilitate the formation of well-defined hydrophilic-hydrophobic microphase separation, which is crucial for the superior OH − conductivity of 69 mS/cm at room temperature. Besides, the as-prepared AEMs also exhibit excellent alkaline tolerance as well as improved dimensional stability due to their carefully designed polymer architecture, which provide new directions to pursue high performance AEMs and are promising to serve as a candidate for fuel cell technology.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane (AEM) is the heart of alkali electrolyte membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). To achieve high performance of AEMFC, high conductivity and alkaline stability of AEMs are highly desired. In the present work, we report the synthesis of ether-free polymers with different degrees of Y-shaped branching as AEM materials. Our investigations reveal that incorporating bulky, rigid, and Y-branching units into the polymer backbone can increase the free volume of the AEM and thus help build ion channels with lower hydroxide ion transport resistance. The resultant AEM showed a markedly improved ionic conductivity (116.92 mS/cm at 80 degrees C), while the simple linear type of the AEM only showed an ion conductivity of 63.63 mS/cm at a similar ion exchange capacity. With such an AEM, the peak power density of the H-2/O-2 single cell at 60 degrees C reaches 275 mW/cm(2).

Abstract:To ameliorate the trade-off effect between ionic conductivity and water swelling of anion exchange membranes (AEMs), a crosslinked, hyperbranched membrane (C-HBM) combining the advantages of densely functionalization architecture and crosslinking structure was fabricated by the quaternization of the hyperbranched poly(4-vinylbenzyl chloride) (HB-PVBC) with a multiamine oligomer poly(N,N-Dimethylbenzylamine). The membrane displayed well-developed microphase separation morphology, as confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the corresponding high ionic conductivity, strongly depressed water swelling, high thermal stability, and acceptable alkaline stability were achieved. Of special note is the much higher ratio of hydroxide conductivity to water swelling (33.0) than that of most published side-chain type, block, and densely functionalized AEMs, implying its higher potential for application in fuel cells.

Abstract:Alkaline exchange membrane (AEM)-based fuel cells have emerged as a promising technology for clean energy conversion. In contrast to acidic proton exchange membrane in fuel cells, AEM fuel cells utilize an alkaline membrane AEM to facilitate the migration of hydroxide ions, offering advantages of economic earth-abundant catalysts and enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics. However, AEMs that possess all characters of high ion conductivity, good chemical stability under high pH and temperature, robust mechanical properties, scalable synthesis, and low manufacturing costs are rare until now. Herein, we present quaternary ammonium-functionalized cyclic olefin copolymers (COCs) as a new class of alkaline stable and low-cost AEMs. Furthermore, we developed reinforced composite AEM by impregnating the quaternary ammonium-functionalized COC into a mechanically robust matrix. The prepared COC-reinforced membrane exhibits outstanding hydroxide conductivity of 127 mS/cm at 80°C and low swelling ratio in liquid water, and excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength > 50 MPa, and elongation at break > 248%. The H2-O2 fuel cell test exhibited a maximum peak power density of >1.2 W cm-2 at 80°C with a low high-frequency resistance (HFR) under 0.1 Ohm cm2.

Abstract:Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-grafted imidazolium-containing flexible-side-chain type anion exchange membrane (AEM) has been designed and fabricated for efficient anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). The cation-dipole interactions between electronegative alkoxy and imidazolium drive the spontaneous self-assembly of the cationic side chains, thus boosting the formation of continuous ion-conducting channels with enhanced OH− conduction kinetic. The PEG's H-bonding with H2O molecules improves the hydrophilicity of the AEMs, thereby reducing the dependence of OH− transport on relative humidity (RH). Meanwhile, the alkaline stability of PEG-grafted AEMs has been improved since the electrostatic interactions reduce the electrophilicity of imidazolium for potential hydroxide attack. Compared with OBImPPO26-PEG0, the designed OBImPPO26-PEG0.5 (with 0.5% PEG grafts) membrane exhibits higher OH− conductivity (93.8 mS cm−1 vs. 80.9 mS cm−1, 80 °C) and conductivity remaining (80.4% vs. 51.0%, treated by 2 mol L−1 aqueous NaOH for 216 h at 60 °C). The peak power density of an H2/O2 single-cell employing OBImPPO26-PEG0.5 membrane reaches up to 407 mW cm−2 at 60 °C.

Abstract:Poly (terphenylene-methyl piperidine-biphenyl) was synthesized using biphenyl, terphenyl, and N-methyl-4-piperidone as raw materials to prepare anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Biphenyl and terphenyl as the copolymer monomers were used to regulate the morphology and properties of the AEMs. The flexible copolymer backbone promoted efficient transport of hydroxyl ions. The obtained AEMs show a high ion conductivity of 49.16 mS/cm at 80(o)C. Furthermore, the stable piperidine cation and polyarylene chain contributed to the excellent alkaline stability of AEMs that showed only 0.63% deterioration in ion conductivity after soaking in 1 M KOH at 80(o)C for 720 h. The peak of single cell power density of 54 mW cm(-2) was obtained at a load current density of 150.1 mA cm(-2) using an aqueous solution containing 1 M methanol and 1 M potassium hydroxide as the anode fuel, and pure oxygen gases as the cathode fuel at 30(o)C.

Abstract:Abstract As a key component of low‐cost anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are far from commercial application, because of dissatisfactory alkaline stability and conductivity. Herein, a new insight is proposed to prepare high performance AEMs by constructing of confined ion channel. With an intermediate oligomer produced before the main copolymerization, novel poly(vinyl‐carbazolyl aryl piperidinium) AEMs with confined sub‐2‐nm ion channel are successfully prepared. The unique sub‐2‐nm ion channel enable membranes ultrahigh hydroxide conductivity of 261.6 mS cm −1 , and the state‐of‐the‐art chemical stability over 5000 h. Moreover, the AEMs also exhibit good mechanical stability with lower water uptake and dimensional swelling. Based on the as‐prepared AEMs and ionomer, fuel cells exhibit outstanding peak power density of 1.8 and 0.2 W cm −2 with Pt‐based catalysts and completely non‐precious metal catalysts, respectively.

Abstract:Novel alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) containing pendant guanidinium groups are synthesized from poly(2, 6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) by benzyl bromination and subsequent reaction with 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylguanidine (PMG). The performances of the resultant guanidinium-functionalized-PPO (GPPO) AAEMs are controlled by tailoring the amount of guanidinium groups in the membrane matrix. The AAEMs exhibit high ionic conductivities (up to 71 mS cm−1 at room temperature); this stems from the high alkalinity (high pKa) of guanidinium hydroxide, which leads to an augmentation of both the number of dissociated hydroxides and water molecules. Furthermore, the GPPO AAEMs exhibit excellent thermal and alkali stabilities due to the presence of the π electron conjugated systems of the pendant guanidinium head-groups permitting the positive charge to be delocalized over one carbon and three nitrogen atoms. Specifically, the initial decomposition temperatures, from thermogravimmetric analyses of the GPPO AAEMs, are high at 270 °C, while the hydroxide conductivity of the AAEM with the most optimal properties remains stable in aqueous KOH (1 mol dm−3) solution for 192 h at 25 °C. A H2/O2 fuel cell test at 50 °C with a GPPO AAEM yielded a beginning-of-life peak power density of 16 mW cm−2.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) present an economically efficient alternative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells because of the use of non-precious metals. The development of high-performance and durable AEMFCs necessitates the use of highly conductive and robust anion exchange membranes (AEMs). In this study, a novel organic-organic composite AEM was synthesized by preparing poly(arylene piperidinium) polymer through Friedel-Crafts acid condensation and incorporating one-dimensional organic tubes as reinforcing materials. The composite AEM exhibits high conductivity (235 mS cm −1 at 80 °C) due to the chain orientation within the organic tubes and the availability of abundant transport sites. Furthermore, in contrast to the incompatibility of inorganic materials with polymers, the flexible nature of organic tubes enhanced polymer entanglement, significantly boosting the mechanical strength (120 MPa) of the AEM. Crosslinking the polymer backbone with the organic tubes facilitated simultaneous swelling, effectively mitigating interfacial compatibility issues, result in high dimensional stability. The H 2 –O 2 fuel cell employing the developed AEM demonstrated a peak power density of 1018 mW cm −2 at 80 °C. This study provides a comprehensive synthetic strategy for producing stable AEMs with high hydroxide ion conductivity and outstanding mechanical properties tailored for alkaline membrane fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Low-cost anion exchange membrane fuel cells have been investigated as a promising alternative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells for the last decade. The major barriers to the viability of anion exchange membrane fuel cells are their unsatisfactory key components—anion exchange ionomers and membranes. Here, we present a series of durable poly(fluorenyl aryl piperidinium) ionomers and membranes where the membranes possess high OH − conductivity of 208 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, low H 2 permeability, excellent mechanical properties (84.5 MPa TS), and 2000 h ex-situ durability in 1 M NaOH at 80 °C, while the ionomers have high water vapor permeability and low phenyl adsorption. Based on our rational design of poly(fluorenyl aryl piperidinium) membranes and ionomers, we demonstrate alkaline fuel cell performances of 2.34 W cm −2 in H 2 -O 2 and 1.25 W cm −2 in H 2 -air (CO 2 -free) at 80 °C. The present cells can be operated stably under a 0.2 A cm −2 current density for ~200 h.

Abstract:To overcome alkali-resistant and synthetic hurdles to alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) for alkaline fuel cells, the polyacylation of pre-quaternized monomers as a straightforward and versatile approach has been proposed for the first time. Via this approach, novel aromatic anion-exchange polyelectrolytes featuring a long pendent spacer (i.e., -O-(CH2)(4)-) instead of a conventional benzyl-type spacer (i.e., -CH2-) are successfully synthesized, and exhibit not only high OH- and CO32- conductivity (91 mS cm(-1) and 51 mS cm(-1) at 60 degrees C, respectively) but also outstanding alkaline stability (e.g., no degradation of ammonium groups after aging in 6 mol dm(-3) NaOH at 60 degrees C for 40 days). Using this kind of AAEM, a promising peak power density of 120 mW cm(-2) is obtained on a preliminary H-2/O-2 single cell at 50 degrees C. This powerful synthetic approach together with exceptional membrane properties should pave the way to the practical application of this kind of AAEMs in alkaline fuel cells.
Enhanced Performance and Stability of Poly(carbazole)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes via Synergistic Dual Side Chains for Fuel Cell Applications

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are crucial components of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), and the development of highly efficient and stable AEMs is fundamental for advancing the practicality of AEMFCs. In this study, we propose the concept of “combining rigidity and flexibility” to design a series of poly(carbazole)-based AEMs with unique dual side chains. One side chain is a flexible dialkoxy chain, while the other consists of a rigid aromatic structure attached to two flexible alkyl chains. The resulting AEMs exhibit a remarkably high ionic conductivity, ranging from 120.2 to 175.7 mS cm–1 at 80 °C, along with an ion exchange capacity of 1.64–2.19 mequiv g–1. These properties are attributed to significant microphase separation facilitated by the strong interaction between the dual side chains. Furthermore, these AEMs demonstrated excellent alkaline stability. Even after being immersed in NaOH solution for 1080 h, their conductivity remains above 92%. This exceptional stability against hydroxide ions is attributed to the large electrostatic potential of the dialkoxy side chain, as verified by density functional theory calculations. Importantly, when incorporated into a hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell, the AEMs enable the fuel cell to achieve a large power density of 605 mW cm–2 at 70% relative humidity. This remarkable performance underscores their potential application prospects in the field of alkaline fuel cells. As a result, our findings contribute to the ongoing advancement of the AEMFC technology.

Pulsed Plasma-Polymerized Alkaline Anion-Exchange Membranes for Potential Application in Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells

Abstract:Alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) are becoming significant materials for application in fuel cells. Considering the mobility of hydroxide ions is inherently slower than that of proton in dilute solution, AAEMs with high ion conductivity and several microns thickness are promising. In this study, ultra-thin AAEMs are successfully synthesized by plasma polymerization. The attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermo gravimetric analysis demonstrate that the benzyltrimethylammonium cationic groups are successfully introduced into the polymer matrix via plasma polymerization, quaternization, and alkalization. The physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics, including ionic exchange capacity, water uptake, thermal stability, chemical stability, and ionic conductivity, are measured. The plasma-polymerized AAEMs exhibit a satisfactory thermal stability, chemical stability, ionic exchange capacity (1.29mmol . g(-1)), ionic conductivity (0.0331 S . cm(-1)), and activation energy (7.632 kJ . mol(-1)), suggesting a great potential for application in direct alcohol fuel cells.
Cross-linked anion exchange membranes for alkaline fuel cells synthesized using a solvent free strategy

Abstract:This article describes the preparation of cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) using a solvent free strategy. A novel casting solution is formed by dissolving cardo polyetherketone (PEK-C) as an essential polymer intensifier in a mixture of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and divinylbenzene (DVB) monomers without any organic solvent. Tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) is added to act as a cross-linker between VBC and PKE-C. Polymerization and quaternization are successively implemented to obtain the cross-linked AEMs, whose properties are found to compare well to many referenced AEMs. Apart from improving the compatibility of PEK-C with poly(VBC-co-DVB), TEPA also effectively enhances the charge density, ionic conductivity and alkaline stabilities of the resulting AEMs, whilst simultaneously inhibiting the swelling ratio. The optimal membrane shows an ionic conductivity of 76 mS cm−1 at 70 °C and 100% relative humidity and can remain stable after immersing in 2 mol dm−3 KOH solution for 168 h. A power density of 6 mW cm−2 is achieved in a H2/O2 fuel cell test at 50 °C with an optimal AEM but a non-optimized membrane electrode fabrication process. Generally, the novel method herein highlights an environmentally friendly and economically attractive method for the preparation of AEMs used in alkaline fuel cells.
Branched Poly(Aryl Piperidinium) Membranes for Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are a promising, next-generation fuel cell technology. AEMFCs require highly conductive and robust anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), which are challenging to develop due to the tradeoff between conductivity and water uptake. Here we report a method to prepare high-molecular-weight branched poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs. We show that branching reduces water uptake, leading to improved dimensional stability. The optimized membrane, b-PTP-2.5, exhibits simultaneously high OH- conductivity (>145 mS cm-1 at 80 °C), high mechanical strength and dimensional stability, good processability, and excellent alkaline stability (>1500 h) in 1 M KOH at 80 °C. AEMFCs based on b-PTP-2.5 reached peak power densities of 2.3 W cm-2 in H2 -O2 and 1.3 W cm-2 in H2 -air at 80 °C. The AEMFCs can run stably under a constant current of 0.2 A cm-2 over 500 h, during which the b-PTP-2.5 membrane remains stable.
