Abstract:The fabrication of functional wound dressings to control skin bacterial infection is of vital importance. In this work, a silver (I) metal-organic framework Ag2[HBTC][im] (1) and polylactic acid composite fibrous mat (1-PLA) with efficient antimicrobial capability was prepared via an electrospinning process. 1 possesses three-dimensional framework assembled from rod-shaped molecular building blocks which consist of Ag (I) ions, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (HBTC) and imidazole (im) ligand. The as-prepared 1-PLA shows unique broad-spectrum antibiosis potency against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Mycobacterium smegmatis (M. smegmatis). Proteomic investigations enable to gain insight on the antimicrobial mechanism of 1-PLA composite indicating that the dissipation of proton motive force, destroying of energy metabolism, decreasing or losing of transport system may be associated with the antibacterial action. Furthermore, in vivo experiments indicate that the 1-PLA electrospun fibrous mat can significantly accelerate the healing rate of infection wounds in rats. This study demonstrated the electrospun fibrous mat with efficient on-demand antibacterial properties is promising for practical application in anti-infective therapy.

Abstract:This paper presented the composite antibacterial agent of nano-silver (Ag) and tea polyphenol (TP) by bioreduction method. Then polylactic acid (PLA) nanofiber membranes with different antibacterial content were prepared by electrostatic spinning method. The morphologies, structural characteristics and properties of electrostatic spun fiber membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electronic single fiber strength machine and flat colony counting method. The results showed that Ag@TP was loaded with silver nanoparticles with uniform particle size distribution. When the content of Ag@TP of electrospun fiber was less than 2.0%, the diameter of electrostatic spinning fiber was uniformly distributed and had smooth surface. It could be seen from the FTIR spectrum that Ag@TP and PLA were well compounded through valence bonds. As the content of antibacterial agent increased, the elongation at break of the fiber membrane first decreased and then increased. While the breaking strength was found to first decrease, then increase and decrease again. The water contact angle of the fiber membrane was gradually decreased with the increase of the antibacterial agent content. When the amount of Ag@TP was added 2.0%, the relative antibacterial rate of the electrospun fiber membrane to E.coli and S.aureus was as high as 95%, indicating an excellent antibacterial effect.

Abstract:Faced with the pollution caused by particulate matter (PM) in the air, the prevalence of infectious diseases, and the environmental burden by use of nondegradable polymers, the existing filter materials such as meltblown cloth of polypropylene cannot satisfactorily meet people's requirements. In this study, Ag nanoparticles were loaded onto ZIF-8 particles by impregnation reduction to prepare the positively charged Ag@ZIF-8. The porous fibrous membranes of Ag@ZIF-8 with polylactide (PLA) were manufactured by electrostatic spinning technology. Due to the inherently charged feature of Ag@ZIF-8 particles and the presence of pores on fibers, the prepared membranes showed a stable good filtration efficiency of over 97 % at different humidity (30-90%RH, relative humidity). Meanwhile, the presence of charge on Ag@ZIF-8 and the synergistic effects of Ag and ZIF-8 particles made the membranes exhibit good antibacterial effects. The width of the inhibition zone of 3 wt%Ag@ZIF-8/PLA membrane reached 1.33 mm for E. coli and 1.35 mm for S. aureus, respectively.

Abstract:With the continuous application of antibacterial materials, various problems have emerged, such as expensive prices and the potential development of resistance. Cationic antibacterial agents, due to their high solubility, reactivity, and antibacterial properties, are considered as environmentally friendly and cost-effective antibacterial agents. In addition, the electrospinning technique is recognized as a versatile and high-efficiency method to produce nanofibers with multifunctional properties and adjustable structures. In this work, we prepared a series of nanofiber membranes by electrospinning technology using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium Bromide (CTAB) and 5-Chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline (5-Cl8Q) as antibacterial agents and polylactic acid (PLA) as substrate. The antimicrobial performance of PLA/CTAB/5-Cl8Q was the highest among the prepared materials, which inhabited S. aureus and E. coli up to 99.9% and 95.9%, respectively, and the antibacterial properties were stable. In general, PLA/CTAB/5-Cl8Q has great development potential, and it can be applied to real life as a cost-effective, biodegradable and highly antibacterial material.

Abstract:Nowadays, in some countries and regions the inhalable suspended particles in the air have caused irreversible harm to human health. The filtration performance of the material is the key to the application, meanwhile, the bacteria and viruses accumulated on the surface of the filter material have caused potential threats. And a large amount of discarded non-degradable filter materials caused secondary pollution of the environment. Therefore, filter material with high interception efficiency, antimicrobial and environmental friendliness properties is urgent needed. In this study, electrospinning was used to prepare an antibacterial fibrous membrane composed of an organic–inorganic composite whose continuous phase was polylactic acid (PLA), with quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) particles decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as the inorganic filler phase. Its filtration and antibacterial properties were investigated, and the results showed that the main factors affecting the filtration efficiency were the ratio of the filler particles to the continuous phase and the particle size of the filler. The addition of QMP endowed the membrane with antibacterial properties, which were further improved after decorating Ag NPs with QMP. The barrier rate of the membrane for PM 2.5 reached 95.6%, and the inactivation ratios of the fibrous membrane for Escherichia coli were 48% and 98% before and after decoration by Ag NPs, respectively.

Electrospun Multiscale Poly(lactic acid) Nanofiber Membranes with a Synergistic Antibacterial Effect for Air-Filtration Applications

Abstract:Pollution of particulate matter (PM) threatens human health and the environment. Owing to its tiny particle size, large specific surface area, and porous structure, PM readily adsorbs and retains airborne bacteria. Therefore, it is essential to develop nanofiber air-filtration materials with excellent antibacterial properties. This work reports a strategy to prepare multiscale poly(lactic acid) nanofiber membranes with antibacterial properties induced by the synergistic effects of quaternary ammonium salts and N-halamine via electrospinning. The membrane exhibited a long-lasting and excellent bactericidal effect (>99%) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; after 10 chlorination cycles, the membrane displayed a high bacteriostatic rate (>90%). Additionally, compared to unmodified PLA nanofiber membranes, the modified multiscale PLA nanofiber membranes prepared by mild modification possessed good antibacterial properties and had no impact on mechanical properties and filtration performance; the membrane's tensile strength also increased from 10.52 to 14.19 MPa. A filter prepared using the as-prepared membrane exhibited efficient interception of the PM0.3 performance (99.992%) and low air resistance (107 Pa). Notably, the as-prepared air filter exhibited a higher filtration performance than commercial filters. The materials developed in this work will have broad applications in air filtration, medical hygiene, and environmental protection.

Immobilization of Silver in Polypropylene Membrane for Anti-Biofouling Performance

Abstract:In this study, a method was developed to immobilize silver onto polypropylene (PP) membrane surfaces for improved anti-biofouling performance. A commercial PP membrane was first grafted with the thiol functional groups, and then silver ions were immobilized onto the PP membrane surface through coordinating with the thiol groups. The immobilized silver was found to be very stable, with only similar to 1.1% of the immobilized silver being leached out during a leaching test. The surface of the modified membrane (PPS-Ag) was examined with ATR-FTIR and XPS analysis, which verified the successful grafting of the thiol groups and the coordination of silver ions on the membrane surface. The surface properties of the membrane were also characterized by SEM, AFM and water contact angle measurements. The PPS-Ag membrane was found to have a smoother and more hydrophilic surface than the PP membrane. Both Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, and Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, were used to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-biofouling performance of the PPS-Ag membrane. From disk diffusion experiments, the PPS-Ag membrane exhibited the capability of inhibiting the growth of both the Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria tested. The anti-biofouling performance of the membrane was assessed by immersion in a mixed suspension of E. coli and S. aureus and filtration tests. The PPS-Ag membrane showed a stable and significantly enhanced anti-biofouling performance as compared with the PP membrane. The results in this study demonstrate that biofouling of a PP membrane can be sufficiently overcome through immobilizing silver onto the membrane surface.

Abstract:The development of high-performance filtration materials is essential for the effective removal of airborne particles, and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) anchored to organic polymer matrices are considered to be one of the most promising porous adsorbents for air pollutants. Nowadays, most air filters are generally based on synthetic fiber polymers derived from petroleum residues and have limited functionality, so the use of MOFs in combination with nanofiber air filters has received a lot of attention. Here, a conjugated electrostatic spinning method is demonstrated for the one-step preparation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibrous membranes with a bimodal diameter distribution and the anchoring of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) by the introduction of TiO2 and in situ generation to construct favorable multiscale fibers and rough structures. The prepared PLA/TZ maintained a good PM2.5 capture efficiency of 99.97%, a filtration efficiency of 96.43% for PM0.3, and a pressure drop of 96.0 Pa, with the highest quality factor being 0.08449 Pa−1. Additionally, ZIF-8 was uniformly generated on the surface of PLA and TiO2 nanofibers, obtaining a roughened structure and a larger specific surface area. An enhanced filtration retention effect and electrostatic interactions, as well as active free radicals, can be generated for the deep inactivation of bacteria. Compared with the unmodified membrane, PLA/TZ prepared antibacterial characteristics induced by photocatalysis and Zn2+ release, with excellent bactericidal effects against S. aureus and E. coli. Overall, this work may provide a promising approach for the development of efficient biomass-based filtration materials with antimicrobial properties.

Abstract:Stereo-complexed polylactide (sc-PLA) fibers with excellent heat resistance and antibacterial properties were prepared by electrospinning. Due to poor heat resistance, common poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) fibers have poor dimensional stability at high temperatures and cannot be sterilized and recycled as a medical filter material. In this research, PLLA/poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) blends doped with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were electrospun to obtain the sc-PLA fibers. The effect of thermal induction temperature on the crystalline structure and thermal properties of sc-PLA fibers was investigated. Moreover, the influence of the addition amount of AgNPs on the crystal structure of sc-PLA fibers was studied, and the antibacterial properties of the sc-PLA fibers with different addition amounts of AgNPs were analyzed. The thermal induction is beneficial to the formation of stereo-complexed crystals of sc-PLA fibers, and finally completely stereo-complexed PLA fibers were obtained. The melting temperature of the completely stereo-complexed PLA fibers was 50°C higher than that of the PLLA fibers; therefore, the sc-PLA fibers have better heat resistance. The addition of AgNPs was conducive to the formation of stereo-complexed crystals of sc-PLA fibers. In addition, the antibacterial rate of sc-PLA fibers against E. coli and S. aureus was 99.99 ± 0.01% when the addition amount of AgNPs was only 0.15 wt%. The fiber membrane obtained in this experiment can be used as a reusable filter material, and the sc-PLA fiber membrane has broad application prospects in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Nanofibers are some of the most attractive materials that can modify functionalities for developing new kinds of specific applications and are mainly used as a biomedical material. Herein, we designed and prepared antibacterial nonwoven fiber mats of PLA and PLA composited with Ag nanoparticles by electrospinning. The effects of varying filler contents on their chemical, surface morphology, thermal, water absorbency, and antibacterial properties were investigated using FTIR, SEM/EDS, DSC, swelling ratio, and qualitative and quantitative antibacterial tests. FTIR and EDS spectra indicated that Ag nanoparticles were incorporated in the PLA without chemical bonding. SEM revealed that the average diameter of the PLA nanofibers containing the Ag nanoparticles was more significant than those without those particles. In addition, fiber diameters are proportional to the amount of Ag nanoparticle contents. DSC indicated that the Ag nanoparticles can be incorporated within the PLA matrix without strongly affecting their thermal properties. Moreover, the crystallinity of the composite nonwoven fiber mats was higher than those of fiber mats in the neat PLA. However, TGA revealed that the loaded Ag can improve the thermal stability of the PLA electrospun fiber mats. Accordingly, the antibacterial activities revealed that all the composite nanofiber mats exhibited excellent resistance against S. aureus and E. coli bacterial strains. In addition, in the cell toxicity study, all produced hybrids of nonwoven fiber mats induced a reduction in cell viability for the L929 fibroblast cells. Our results suggest that the designed and prepared nonwoven fiber mats may have good potential for use in the biomedical field, particularly in wound dressing applications.

Abstract:This study investigates the integration of Ti3C2Tx (MX) and Ag/Ti3C2Tx (Ag/MX) nanocomposites into polylactic acid membranes to enhance hydrophilicity and impart antibacterial properties, targeting hospital wastewater treatment. MX and silver nanoparticles are known for their hydrophilicity and antimicrobial capabilities, were synthesized and incorporated into PLA; a green polymer. The impact of nanocomposite concentration on the membrane's chemical structure, morphology, and overall performance were characterized using various PLA membrane properties and to evaluate the nanocomposite's performance in enhancing pure water flux and antibacterial efficacy. The pure water permeability increased from 1512 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 to 3108 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 in PLA/AgMX4 compared to PLA. Furthermore, a total bacteria count (TBC) rejection of up to 97 % was obtained using the PLA/AgMX4 membrane. The results demonstrated significant improvements in PLA/AgMX membranes compared to pristine PLA, showing a large potential for hospital wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Bacterial infections occur frequently during the implantation of medical devices, and functional coating is one of the effective means to prevent and remove biofilms. In this study, three different hydrophilic polyoxazolines with carboxyl groups (aPOx: PT1, PT2 and PT3) and bactericidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized successfully, and an aPOx-AgNP multilayer film was prepared by electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly. The effect of charge density and assembly solution concentration was explored, and the optimal self-assembly parameters were established (PT2 1 mg/mL and AgNPs 3 mg/mL). The hydrophilicity of the surface can be enhanced to resist protein adhesion if the outermost layer is aPOx, and AgNPs can be loaded to kill bacteria, thereby realizing the bactericidal anti-adhesion potential integration of the aPOx-AgNP multilayer film. In addition, the aPOx-AgNP multilayer film was found to have the characteristic of intelligent and efficient pH-responsive silver release, which is expected to be used as a targeted anti-biofilm surface of implantable medical devices.

Abstract:The polylactic acid (PLA)/tea polyphenol (TP) nanofiber membranes were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The physical properties, antibacterial agent release, degradation, and antibacterial properties were investigated. Results demonstrated that stepwise and controlled antibacterial agent release profiles were achieved based on the core-shell configuration and disparate degradation rate of PLA and TP. The mechanical performance decreased with the increase of the TP content in the shell layer. The cumulative antibacterial agent release rate of nanofiber membranes with different TP content was different, while the antibacterial agent release trend was the same. The antibacterial agent release rate of the sample was the fastest at the initial stage from 2 h to 8 h, and then gradually slowed down after 24 h. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the PLA/TP nanofiber membranes was confirmed by the inhibition zone method against both Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli). Results showed that the antibacterial performance of PLA/TP nanofiber was intensified with the increasing content of TP, especially had better antibacterial performance against S. aureus.

Abstract:Biofouling was a considerable issue in the water treatment by membrane technology. In this study, high anti-bacterial property Ag-MOF was synthesized followed by embedding into polyamide layer with vacuum-assisted interfacial polymerization process to prepare an Ag-MOF incorporated membrane. The successful preparation of Ag-MOF and membranes was verified by FT-IR, FESEM, XPS, XRD, BET, zeta potential and contact angle test. On account to the strong hydrophility, porous structure, electronegativity and antibacterial property of Ag-MOF, modified membranes showed excellent performance for dyes, salts and bacteria. The water permeability of modified membranes was increased from 9.2 to 14.3 L m-2h−1 bar−1 and the rejection rate of MO, MB and RB of the optimum membranes were 95.4%, 87.8% and 99.3%, respectively. The rejection rate of Na2SO4 and MgSO4 were increased from 54.0% and 36.6% to 84.1% and 73.1%. The sterilization rate of modified membranes to E. coli and S. aureus both exceeded 99%. The leaching test of Ag+ evaluated the potential mechanism of anti-bacterial property. Moreover, dynamic bio-fouling test were used to detect the actual status in the filtration process. Those results suggested that modified membranes showed a strong resistance to bio-foulants thus enlarged the scope of application of membranes for water treatment.

Abstract:In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes containing Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by electrospinning and grafted copolymerization with 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid (BPTA) to provide better mechanical properties, lower water vapor transmittance, and higher antibacterial activity (against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) than the PVA/AgNPs membrane. The PVA/AgNPs/BPTA membrane showed higher antibacterial activity than the other membranes, and it produced inhibition zones with diameters of 18.12 ± 0.08 and 16.41 ± 0.05 mm against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. The PVA/AgNPs/BPTA membrane was found to be capable of promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation under both light and dark conditions. Cycling experiments performed following ROS quenching showed that the best-performing composite membrane retained >70% of its original OH⋅ radical and H2O2 charging capacity after seven cycles. In the filtration test, the electrospun nanofibrous membranes showed high filtration efficiencies of 99.98% for sodium chloride (NaCl). In addition, these membranes maintained a relatively low pressure drop of 168 Pa with a basis weight of 2.1 g m-2. Thus, the PVA/AgNPs/BPTA membrane was concluded to be a promising medical protective material offering the benefits of structural stability and reusability.

Abstract:For several decades, urinary tract infections caused by catheter-associated devices have negatively impacted not only medical device utilization, but also patient health . As such, the creation of catheter materials with both superior biocompatibility and antibacterial properties has become necessary. This study aimed to produce electrospun membranes based on polylactic acid (PLA) with the incorporation of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) and nano-zinc oxide (nZnO) particles, as well as a mixture of both, in order to design bifunctional membranes with enhanced bioactivity and antibacterial features. The optimum spinning process was determined through examination of various PLA mass concentrations, spinning solution propelling speeds, and receiving drum rotating speeds, with emphasis on the mechanical properties of PLA membranes. Additionally, the antibacterial properties and cytocompatibility of the ZnO-BP/PLA antibacterial membranes were explored. Results demonstrated that the ZnO-BP/PLA antibacterial membranes displayed a rich porous structure, with uniform distribution of nZnO particles and BPNS. With the increase of polylactic acid concentration and the decrease of spinning solution advancing and drum rotation speeds, the mechanical properties of the fiber membrane were significantly improved. Furthermore, the composite membranes exhibited remarkable photothermal therapy (PTT) capabilities when aided by the synergistic effect of BP nanosheets and ZnO. This was achieved through near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which not only dissipated the biofilm but also enhanced the release capability of Zn 2+ . Consequently, the composite membrane demonstrated an improved inhibitory effect on both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The results of cytotoxicity and adhesion experiments also indicated good cytocompatibility, with cells growing normally on the surface of the ZnO-BP/PLA antibacterial membrane. Overall, these findings validate the utilization of both BPNS and n-ZnO fillers in the creation of novel bifunctional PLA-based membranes, which possess both biocompatibility and antibacterial properties for interventional catheter materials.

Abstract:In this paper, the electronspun Polylactic acid (PLA)/TiO2 nanofluids (nfs) fibrous membrane with good toughness, hydrophilicity and antibacterial activities are fabricated by taking full advantages of solvent-free TiO2 nfs with amphiphilicity and ionic conductivity. The resulting PLA/TiO2 nfs fibrous membrane exhibits excellent mechanical performance with a tensile strength and elongation at break of 3.68 MPa and 97.32 MPa at 5 wt% loading, respectively, which is 4 and 8 times higher than that of pure PLA, respectively. Additionally, TiO2 nfs can migrate onto the surface of PLA fibers during electrospun process, which significantly enhanced hydrophilicity, antistatic property, moisture sorption capacity and wicking properties of PLA fabrics. Meanwhile, the membrane also showed ultrafast water filtration of 3500 L m−2 h−1 driven by gravity force, which is 10–12 times higher than that of commercial ultrafiltration membrane. After ion-exchange reaction with salt solution, excellent antibacterial activity (against E. coli and S. aureus was 95% and 99.9%, respectively) and separation efficiency (above 90% on E. coli) of the obtained fabrics are also achieved. Overall, organic nfs are an idea candidate for fabricating hydrophilic PLA based biodegradable fabric that can be applied in contaminated water treatment, antibacterial textiles and biodegradable absorption materials.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, with the continuous understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of bacterium, the demand for antibacterial plastic products had significantly increased. Besides that, many counties issued mandatory standards for plastic products, which imposed strict requirements on ash content to prevent the addition of excessive inorganic matter to plastics in order to avoid weakening the properties of plastics and deteriorating the recyclable property. Based on this, the development of composites with organic fiber-loaded antibacterial agents is of practicable value and urgency. We used an open-ring addition reaction to modified aramid fiber (AF) by utilizing epoxypropyltrimethoxysilane to react with the reactive groups on the surface of AFs. Subsequently, the modified fibers were surface loaded with silver ionic glass beads. After that, a series of high-density polyethylene composites with excellent mechanical properties and antibacterial properties were prepared using melt mixing method. It was shown that the composite had a low ash value (1.88 wt%) even at a higher filling concentration (7 wt%) and the fibers could change the crystalline properties and morphology of the composite. Because of the fiber reinforcement and crystallization induction effects, the tensile strength and elasticity module of the composites could be improved by 141% and 136%, respectively. In addition, the composites had excellent long-lasting contact antibacterial effects against the inhibition of E. coli . The proposed organic fiber loading technique and antibacterial composites will provide a method for designing and preparing eco-friendly and high-performance plastic products.

Abstract:Objective: In order to investigate the potential biomedical applications of silver nanoparticle (Ag NP)-immobilized electrospun nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Methods: Silver nanoparticles were immobilized within water-stable electrospun polyethylenimine (PEI)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers by an in-situ reduction method after complexing Ag + . ions with the free PEI amine groups. The obtained Ag NP-incorporated PEI/PVA nanofibers were then hydroxylated, carboxylated, and acetylated to generate different surface functionalities. Different techniques were employed to characterize the Ag NP-containing nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Results: In vitro antibacterial activity tests show that Ag NP-containing nanofibrous mats have high antibacterial activity and are capable of inhibiting the growth of both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Cell viability assay data show that the Ag NP-containing nanofibers are cytocompatible, and those treated by hydroxylation and acetylation display better cytocompatibility than those treated by carboxylation and the pristine non-modified fibers to promote cell adhesion and proliferation. Conclusion: Therefore, the hydroxylated or acetylated Ag NP-containing PEI/PVA nanofibers have a great potential for wound dressing, biological protection and tissue engineering applications.

Abstract:Abstract Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a non-toxic, biocompatible degradable polymer material with excellent mechanical properties after moulding. However, it faces challenges in the use of biomedical materials because of its intolerance to bacteria. Here, we use an easy-to-operate method to prepare a composite multilayer membrane: PLLA membrane was used as substrates to assemble positively charged chitosan and negatively charged Ag@MXene on the surface using the layer-by-layer (LBL) method. The assembly process was detected by fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled chitosan and the thickness of the coating multilayer was also detected as 210.0 ± 12.1 nm for P-M membrane and 460.5 ± 26.5 nm for P-Ag@M membrane. The surface self-assembled multilayers exhibited 91.27% and 96.11% growth inhibition ratio against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains under 808 nm near-infrared laser radiation with a synergistic photothermal antibacterial effect. Furthermore, best biocompatibility of P-M and P-Ag@M membranes compare to PLLA membrane motivated us to further explore its application in biomedical materials.
