Abstract:Pollution of particulate matter (PM) threatens human health and the environment. Owing to its tiny particle size, large specific surface area, and porous structure, PM readily adsorbs and retains airborne bacteria. Therefore, it is essential to develop nanofiber air-filtration materials with excellent antibacterial properties. This work reports a strategy to prepare multiscale poly(lactic acid) nanofiber membranes with antibacterial properties induced by the synergistic effects of quaternary ammonium salts and N-halamine via electrospinning. The membrane exhibited a long-lasting and excellent bactericidal effect (>99%) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; after 10 chlorination cycles, the membrane displayed a high bacteriostatic rate (>90%). Additionally, compared to unmodified PLA nanofiber membranes, the modified multiscale PLA nanofiber membranes prepared by mild modification possessed good antibacterial properties and had no impact on mechanical properties and filtration performance; the membrane's tensile strength also increased from 10.52 to 14.19 MPa. A filter prepared using the as-prepared membrane exhibited efficient interception of the PM0.3 performance (99.992%) and low air resistance (107 Pa). Notably, the as-prepared air filter exhibited a higher filtration performance than commercial filters. Abstract:In this study, poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/zein/Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) fibrous membranes were prepared by ultrasonication-assisted electrospinning. The effects of the AgNP content and ultrasonication time on the membrane morphology, chemical structure, biodegradability, mechanical properties, antibacterial/antiviral activity, and air filtration performance were studied. The best-performing membrane (AgNP content = 1% (w/v), sonication time = 30 min) exhibited a bead-on-string morphology, an air permeability of 93.6 ± 1.5 mm s−1, and the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus removal efficiencies of 98.1 ± 1.2% and 97.4 ± 2.5%, respectively. In an experiment with E. coli phage, the above-mentioned membrane exhibited a 97.1 ± 2.1% virus removal efficiency after 60 min. The high performance of this bead-on-string membrane for air filtration was ascribed to the low packing density due to the presence of open interconnected beaded airflow channels and small beads.

Abstract:Nowadays, in some countries and regions the inhalable suspended particles in the air have caused irreversible harm to human health. The filtration performance of the material is the key to the application, meanwhile, the bacteria and viruses accumulated on the surface of the filter material have caused potential threats. And a large amount of discarded non-degradable filter materials caused secondary pollution of the environment. Therefore, filter material with high interception efficiency, antimicrobial and environmental friendliness properties is urgent needed. In this study, electrospinning was used to prepare an antibacterial fibrous membrane composed of an organic–inorganic composite whose continuous phase was polylactic acid (PLA), with quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) particles decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as the inorganic filler phase. Its filtration and antibacterial properties were investigated, and the results showed that the main factors affecting the filtration efficiency were the ratio of the filler particles to the continuous phase and the particle size of the filler. The addition of QMP endowed the membrane with antibacterial properties, which were further improved after decorating Ag NPs with QMP. The barrier rate of the membrane for PM 2.5 reached 95.6%, and the inactivation ratios of the fibrous membrane for Escherichia coli were 48% and 98% before and after decoration by Ag NPs, respectively.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Aerosols are prone to breed bacteria on air filtration materials so as to cause secondary air pollution, especially carrying bacteria and viruses. This paper utilized coaxial electrospinning technology with traditional Chinese medicine Physalis alkekengi Linn as the core layer antibacterial material and polyvinylidene fluoride/polyacrylonitrile mixed solution as the shell layer material. Nonsolvent phase separation technology was employed to prepare the porous shell layer, achieving sustained slow-release and long-lasting antibacterial effects from the core P. alkekengi Linn. In addition, an in-situ polarization technology from high voltage in electrospinning process was adopted to achieve permanent polarization of polyvinylidene fluoride, which changed from α-crystal to β-crystal. Using the electrostatic charge adsorption effect and the ultra-fine pore size screening of the nanofiber membrane, high-efficiency and low-resistance filtration of aerosols above 0.3 μm was achieved (99.98% filtration efficiency and filtration resistance less than 25 Pa). It can be widely used in the field of air filtration and protection in high-risk environments such as stations, schools, and hospitals, achieving long-lasting antibacterial, high-efficiency, and low-resistance air filtration and protection.

Abstract:The demand for air filtration products has increased significantly with the aggravation of air pollution and the pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). It is urgently needed to develop an air filtration membrane that exhibits lasting filtration performance and antibacterial activity. Herein, we report a large-scale blow spinning technique to produce polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membranes for highly efficient air mechanical filtration and its antibacterial modification by adding the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The PVDF nanofiber membrane with an area density of only 1.0 g/m2 exhibits the highest filtration efficiency of 98.63% for the particle with a size of 0.3 μm. After eliminating static electricity, there is almost no reduction in the filtration efficiency of particulate matter with a size larger than 1 μm and only 4.69% decrease in the particulate matter with a size of 0.5 μm. Hence, the PVDF nanofiber membrane with nanostructures for air filtration works mainly by the means of mechanical filtration. To inhibit the survival or growth of the intercepted bacteria on the membrane, the PVDF/AgNPs nanofiber membrane was fabricated by adding AgNPs to PVDF nanofibers, which exhibits the strongest antibacterial activity of more than 99% and an excellent filtration efficiency similar to that without adding AgNPs. The nanofiber membrane with antibacterial activity is expected to extend the service or storage time or be reused without loss of filtration performance. Additionally, large-scale production of nanofiber filtration membranes has been realized using a multi-needle blow spinning machine.

Abstract:Microfiltration membrane with antifouling surface for efficient sterilization is of significance to improve the service performance of membrane system in water treatment engineering. Antibacterial property is beneficial for improving the anti-biofouling performance of membrane. Hence, in this work, citrate-capped Ag NPs were decorated on the surface of PVA-co-PE nanofibrous membrane through charge adsorption by the grafted TC-PEI (tricyanogen chloride-polyethyleneimine) on the nanofiber surface. As indicated by the result of morphology and chemical structure analysis, PVA-co-PE nanofibrous membrane with Ag NPs decorated surface has been successfully prepared. The composite membrane presents a stable water permeability with an absolute rejection efficiency of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) cells. In addition, after attached with the membrane, above bacteria were inactivated effectively with rate of 99.99%. Compared to control samples, the composite membrane presents excellent repetitive-use filtration performance after back-washing test indicating its superior anti-biofouling properties. This can be assigned to the negatively charged surface of citrate-capped Ag NPs, which is beneficial for the penetration of BSA without obvious adhesion behavior to the surface of the membrane. The comprehensive microfiltration performance mentioned above has been attributed to the optimized surface of porous composite membranes synergistically determined by the network nanofiber scaffold and the stably functional surface of citrate-capped Ag NPs, which will bring a new approach in the treatment processing of water body full of microbes.

Abstract:Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibrous membranes combining both thick and thin nanofibers have been fabricated by the method of multi-jet electrospinning with sheath gas to realize high-efficiency air filtration under a low pressure drop. The thin PAN nanofibers form a dense membrane, with a strong capturing ability on the ultra-fine particles, while the thick PVDF nanofibers play a 3D supporting effect on the thin PAN nanofibers. In this case, the combination results in a fluffy membrane with higher porosity, which could achieve the airflow passing through the membrane without the air pressure drop. The effects of the composite manner of thick nanofibers and thin nanofibers are investigated, in order to optimize the air filtration performance of the 3D composite nanofibrous membrane. As a result, the maximum quality factor for air filtration could reach up to 0.398 Pa −1 . The particle-fiber interaction model was used to simulate the air filtration process as well, and the simulation results were fairly consistent with the experimental results, providing a guidance method for the optimization of composite nanofibrous membrane for high-efficiency air filtration. More interestingly, a cationic poly[2-(N,N-dimethyl amino) ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) was added in the PVDF solution to obtain a composite air filtration membrane with excellent antibiosis performance, which achieved the highest inhibition rate of approximately 90%. In short, this work provides an effective way to promote antibiosis air filtration performance by using an electrospun nanofibrous membrane, and might also effectively accelerate the biological protection application of current air filtration membranes.

Abstract:Particulate matter and airborne microorganisms are two of the most severe indoor air problems due to their significant risks to human health. Comprehensive research on air filtration with good filtration performance for fine particles and antibacterial function is essential. In this study, after some experimentations and optimization of conditions, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) 10–1% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) membranes with suitable morphology and uniform diameter distribution are fabricated by an electrospinning method. These electrospun mats exhibited antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria). With its small pore size, high porosity, the high specific surface area of 42 m 2 /g, and robust mechanical strength of 7.14 MPa properties, the resultant PAN10%-1%Ag membranes exhibit high filtration efficiency of 99.27%, the low pressure drop of 33 Pa, and higher quality factor compared to the two standard commercial masks including, the three-ply surgical mask and the respirator face mask. After 24 h of the filtration process in a simulated living environment, the obtained air filter still displayed a high filtration efficiency and a less pressure drop variation. In addition, the R 2 value was 0.99, which indicates that the calculation results are in good agreement with the measured results. The fabrication of PAN-Ag membranes will have broad applications, including face masks, indoor air filtration and clean room.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. To address the issue of viral and bacterial contamination in air filtration materials, specifically focusing on the accumulation of viruses on aerogels and long-term bacterial growth, a hydrophobic and antimicrobial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/tea polyphenols (TPs) nanofibers membrane was prepared by electrospinning technique with natural antimicrobial TPs and ferroelectric PVDF as raw materials. By scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and testing on contact angle and antimicrobial properties, the performances of the nanofiber membranes were characterized. It was verified by XRD and FTIR analyses that the TPs facilitated the transition of PVDF from α-crystalline phase to the β-crystalline phase, thereby enhancing the polarization effect of PVDF nanofiber membranes and fortifying the electrostatic adsorption filtration capacity of the material's trapped charges. Therefore, the incorporation of TPs not only bolstered the material's antimicrobial efficacy but also reinforced the in-situ polarized electret effect of PVDF, consequently augmenting the high filtration efficiency and low filtration resistance capabilities of the PVDF/TPs membrane. The research found that filter membranes containing TPs exhibit exceptional filtration performance, effectively maintaining filtration resistance in 20–25 Pa while achieving a filtration efficiency of over 90% for aerosols with diameters of 2.5 μm. Notably, the PVDF/TPs membrane containing 20% TPs demonstrated outstanding filtration efficiency against 1.5 μm aerosol particles, reaching 99.98% with a filtration resistance of only 23.26 Pa, and a high inhibition rate against Staphylococcus aureus of 96.5%. The PVDF/TPs nanofiber air filtration material developed in this study presents a novel approach for high-efficiency, low-resistance, antibacterial filtration for diverse applications in antibacterial air filtration fields.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to fabricate a high-performance filtration electrospun nanofiber membrane with antibacterial function. The Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) gotten by reducing AgNO 3 act as antimicrobial agent. Then the AgNPs/Polyacrylonitrile (AgNPs/PAN) composite nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning. Design/methodology/approach The electrospun Ag/PAN composite membrane was prepared by one step, in which the Ag particles were acting as antibacterial agent and PAN nanofiber as the upholder of the composite mat. AgNPs were obtained by reducing AgNO3 in N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution at high temperature. Meanwhile, the PAN particles were added to DMF solution and dissolved. Then the Ag/PAN nanofiber was obtained by electrospinning. Findings The thinner nanofiber can be produced with PAN concentration of 12 per cent and AgNPs concentration of 10 per cent. Finally, the filtration resistance of the composite membrane with antibacterial property is as high as 99.1 per cent, and the filtration efficiency is only 83 Pa. Therefore, the AgNPs/PAN composite membrane is the ideal choice for air filtration with antibacterial property. Originality/value The AgNPs/PAN composite nanofiber membrane has high filtration performance for particulate matter (PM)25 and outstanding antibacterial property to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , which can be used with masks, air-conditioning filters (including car air-conditioning filters), window screening and other similar objects.

Abstract:To enhance the mechanical and antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticle impregnated cellulosic fibers, carboxy-cellulose nanocrystals(CCNs) were grafted with chitooligosaccharide(COS), which was used as a stabilizer for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Nanofibrous membranes reinforced with silver nanoparticle impregnated cellulosic fibers(CCN-COS-AgNP) were prepared via electrospinning using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) as a matrix. The effects of CCN-COS-AgNP contents on the morphology, surface composition, mechanical properties, and antibacterial performances of the prepared CCN-COS-AgNP/PVA membranes were examined. The addition of CCN-COS-AgNP certainly improved the mechanical properties and antibacterial performances of the PVA nanofibers. The tensile strength was significantly increased from 4.40 MPa to 8.60 MPa when 8% CCN-COS-AgNP(mass ratio) was introduced. When 10%(mass ratio) CCN-COS-AgNP was added, the nanofibers showed an excellent antibacterial activity for S. aureus(Staphylococcus aureus) and E. coli(Escherichia coli), with the maximum inhibition zones of 2.30 and 1.60 cm, respectively. Moreover, the 2%(mass ratio) CCN-COS-AgNP/PVA fibrous membrane showed 126% cell viability for mg63 human osteoblasts. The electrospun PVA membrane has great potential application in biomedical field.

Abstract:Schematic of antibacterial and filtration mechanism of PA6&Ag MSNMs. Oily particulate matter pollution and bacteria pose a serious threat to human health and have drawn widespread attention. Herein, an Ag‐doped nylon 6 multi‐stage structured antibacterial nanofiber membrane (PA6&Ag MSNM) for effective air filtration of fine oily particulate matters was fabricated by adding a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAHP) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) into PA6 solution via one‐step electrospinning. The fabricated PA6&Ag MSNM is composed of coarse trunk fibers and fine branching fibers, which exhibits high filtration efficiency for oily particulate matters and low pressure drop, with an average filtration efficiency of 99.92% for oily particles of 0.20 ~ 4.59 μm and a low pressure drop of 386 Pa. In addition, the fiber membranes possesses excellent antibacterial properties due to the doping of Ag. The prepared multi‐stage electrospun nanofiber membrane may provide a versatile strategy for designing new antibacterial air filtration materials, which would have broad application prospects.

Abstract:Antibacterial fiber mats play a crucial role in inhibiting the spread of bacteria and preventing bacterial transmission. While polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) exhibits excellent biological inertness, the lack of antibacterial properties in pure PTFE fiber mats has diminished their competitiveness. In this study, we developed an antibacterial fiber mat with high breathability and moisture permeability by introducing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into a PTFE emulsion through electrospinning. In this study, five sets of concentration gradients from 1% to 5% were set up, and the comparison revealed that the best PTFE/Ag NPs composite fiber mat (PA fiber mat) performance was achieved at 3% Ag NPs concentration. Compared to PTFE fiber mats without Ag NPs loading and conventional expanded membranes (ePTFE), it demonstrated antibacterial rates of 97.1% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and 97.0% against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), a moisture permeability performance of 15,500 ± 304 g(m 2 ·12h) −1 , and excellent breathability. The fiber mat exhibited not only outstanding antibacterial capabilities but also a water contact angle of 137.6°, an elongation at break of approximately 260.92%, and a tensile strength of about 1.84 MPa. These properties offer great promise for PA fiber mats in antibacterial fabric applications including medical masks and protective clothing.

Bactericidal and antifouling electrospun PVA nanofibers modified with a quaternary ammonium salt and zwitterionic sulfopropylbetaine

Abstract:Bacterial adhesion and colonization on material surfaces have attracted great attention due to their potential threat to human health. Combining bactericidal and antifouling functions has been confirmed as an optimal strategy to prevent microbial infection. In this work, biodegradable electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers were chosen due to its high specific area and abundant reactive hydroxyl groups. A quaternary ammonium salt (IQAS) and zwitterionic sulfopropylbetaine (ISB), both containing isocyanate (NCO) groups, were chemically bonded to the PVA nanofiber surface via a coupling reaction between the OH groups of the PVA nanofibers and the NCO groups of IQAS or ISB. The results indicated that the antimicrobial rates of PVA nanofibers modified by IQAS (0.5%) reached 99.9% against both gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC 6538) and gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli, ATCC 25922). Additionally, the live/dead staining and cytotoxicity test indicated that the dual functional IQAS/ISB/PVA nanofibers exhibited excellent bactericidal and antifouling activities with low cytotoxicity. This work may provide practical guidelines to fabricate bactericidal and antifouling materials for healthcare applications, including but not limited to wound dressings, textile, food packaging and air filtration.

Abstract:In this work, a method for preparing nanofibrous filter membrane by electrospinning with polyglycolic acid (PGA) as raw material was proposed. The cellulose microcrystalline (CMC) and ε-polylysine (ε-EPL) was grafted to produce an antibacterial agent, which was added into the solutions of making composite nanofibrous membranes to investigate its filtration and antibacterial properties. The FTIR showed that the prepared antibacterial agent was effectively crosslinked ε-EPL and successfully introduced into the nanofiber membrane. When the content of the antibacterial agent relative to PGA was 9%, the composite membrane presented higher filtration efficiency and antibacterial agent loading. Furthermore, at this composite ratio, the antimicrobial agent prepared at a molar ratio of 0.24:1 of ε-EPL to aldehyde group resulted in the best filtration efficiency (99.83%) and bacterial inhibition (up to 99.97% and 99.99% for E.coli and S.aureus , respectively) for the composite membranes spun in 55 min. Finally, the degradation performance of the PGA nanofibrous membranes was investigated, reflecting the potential prospect of composite membranes in short-term degradation.
Photodynamic antibacterial micro/nanofiber composite membrane with high efficiency and low resistance filtration performance for medical protective materials

Abstract:Bacterial infection is one of the major threats to human health worldwide, posing a great challenge to the development of medical protective materials with efficient filtration and long-lasting antimicrobial properties. In this study, electrospinning technology and non-woven fabrics were combined to construct a micro/nano-structured photodynamic rechargeable and storable antibacterial filtration composite membrane. The filtration efficiency of the composite membrane is as high as 99.99% for 0.5∼5μm particles, and the resistance pressure drop is 85 Pa. In addition, the release of ·OH and H 2 O 2 from the composite film reached 5326.16μg/g and 711.93μg/g, respectively. After 7 cycles of quenching, the charging capacity retains more than 70 % of the original. It showed good antimicrobial properties even when stored under dark conditions for one month. The bactericidal efficiency of the composite membrane against E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 99% under both dark and light conditions. The development of this simple and clean micro/nanofiber membrane provides a new idea for exploring photoactive antimicrobial and filtration materials for medical protection. Abstract:The demand for face masks is increasing exponentially, especially when the coronavirus pandemic and particulate matter (PM) pollution have become serious concerns to public health. However, a lot of pressure is caused by the frequent replacement of traditional masks due to the easy dissipation of electrostatic charge and the accumulation of pathogenic microorganisms. Herein, nanofibrous membranes with efficient inhibition of bacteria, potent air filtration, and reusability performance, consisting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers coated with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC), were successfully manufactured by simple impregnation method and coaxial electrospinning, respectively. The bactericidal rate of the nanofibrous membranes to the attached bacteria was as high as 99.9% due to the excellent bactericidal activity of the quaternary ammonium groups, which could also be proven by the microscopic appearance of the bacterial cell membrane rupture. The permanent dipole charges provided by PAN nanofibers endowed as-prepared nanofibrous membranes the capability to stably capture PM even when the static electricity disappeared. Moreover, the filtration capacity of nanofibrous membranes could still be close to the initial value after a simple washing, which was even unattainable by commercial filters. These nanofibrous membranes are expected to replace traditional disposable filters to achieve long-life and reusability expectations.

Abstract:A novel device named coaxial electro‐spraying/electrospinning was successfully established, which can prepare fibers and particles simultaneously. The PA6 NFs/Ag NPs composite membrane which contains PA6 NFs and Ag NPs simultaneously in a 3D structure was prepared by coaxial electro‐spraying/electrospinning and showed its excellent filtration efficiency and antibacterial properties against Penicillium. Herein, a novel technology named coaxial electro‐spraying/electrospinning was successfully introduced, which can simultaneously prepare nanofibers and nanoparticles. First, the device contains an outer nozzle and an inner nozzle, which combine electrospinning with electro‐spraying technology. Then, the polyamide 6 (PA6) was spun to prepare the nanofibers from the inner nozzle, and the silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the PA6 solution were sprayed to prepare the nanoparticles from the outer nozzle. PA6 nanofibers (NFs)/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) antibacterial composite membranes for the filtration of fine particulate pollutants were successfully prepared using coaxial electro‐spraying/electrospinning. The microstructure, physical properties, and antibacterial properties of the composite membrane were investigated. The results show that Ag NPs are successfully loaded in situ onto PA6 NFs of approximately 100 nm to form a three‐dimensional (3D) structure. The filtration efficiency of the 3D structured filtration membrane reaches 90.98%, compared to only 12.78% for the melt‐blown cloth mask filter material when tested with polystyrene microspheres (PS) of 200 nm. The contact angle of the composite membrane decreased from 145.47° to 44.11°, indicating a significant improvement in the hydrophilicity of the membrane. Furthermore, depositing Ag on the surface fibers resulted in an impressive antibacterial rate of 99.75% against Penicillium.

Abstract:Air pollution is becoming more and more severe, especially in developing countries given the ever-increasing levels of particulate matter, which usually carries viruses and bacteria, has drawn considerable attention as a major threat to public health. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based antibacterial microfiltration hollow fiber membranes are fabricated using the cold-pressing method including paste extrusion, stretching and heating by adding silver-carried zirconium phosphate (AgZrP) into the lubricant and then mixed with PTFE powders. The AgZrP concentration has influences on membrane performance, such as morphology, tensile strength, thermal stability, filtration, and antifouling properties. The PTFE hollow fiber membranes containing 1 wt% AgZrP have a particle filtration efficiency of 97.7324 % for particles (0.3 μm) and 99.9984 % for particles (2.5 μm). The membranes, with AgZrP particles (≥1 wt%), possess high antibacterial activity and are capable of killing all the Escherichia coli (E. coli) and more than 98 % of the Staphylococci aureus (S. aureus) within 24 h of contact. After washing, the fouled filter media retains stable filtration performance and antibacterial property, indicating that AgZrP has a broad-spectrum and long-acting antibacterial activity. The PTFE/AgZrP hollow fiber membranes are supposed to be a candidate for its application in air filtration.
