Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 33, Issue 01, January 2024. We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of this paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

Abstract:To better understand the fundamental quandle of a knot or link, it can be useful to look at finite quotients of the quandle. One such quotient is the n -quandle (or, when n=2 , the involutory quandle). Hoste and Shanahan [J. Hoste and P. D. Shanahan, Links with finite n -quandles, Algebraic Geom. Topol. 17 (2017) 2807–2823.] gave a complete list of the links which have finite n -quandles; it remained to give explicit descriptions of these quandles. This has been done for several cases in [A. Crans, J. Hoste, B. Mellor and P. D. Shanahan, Finite n -qundles of torus and two-bridge links, J. Knot Theory Ramifications 28 (2019) 1950028; J. Hoste and P. D. Shanahan, Involutory quandles of (2, 2, r )-Montesinos links, J. Knot Theory Ramifications 26 (2017)]; in this work, we continue this project and explicitly describe the Cayley graphs for the finite involutory quandles of two-bridge links with an axis.

Pointed quandles of linkoids

Abstract:In this paper we define the fundamental quandle of knotoids and linkoids and prove that it is invariant under the under forbidden-move and hence encodes only the information of the underclosure of the knotoid. We then introduce $n$-pointed quandles, which generalize quandles by specifying $n$ elements as ordered basepoints. This leads to the notion of fundamental pointed quandles of linkoids, which enhances the fundamental quandle. Using $2$-pointed quandle allows us to distinguish 1-linkoids with equivalent under-closures and leads to a couple of 1-linkoid invariants. We also generalize the notion of homogeneity of quandles to $n$-homogeneity of quandles. We classify all $\infty$-homogeneous, finite quandles.

Planar Equivalence of Knotoids and Quandle Invariants

Abstract:While knotoids on the sphere are well-understood by a variety of invariants, knotoids on the plane have proven more subtle to classify due to their multitude over knotoids on the sphere and a lack of invariants that detect a diagram's planar nature. In this paper, we investigate equivalence of planar knotoids using quandle colorings and cocycle invariants. These quandle invariants are able to detect planarity by considering quandle colorings that are restricted at distinguished points in the diagram, namely the endpoints and the point-at-infinity. After defining these invariants we consider their applications to symmetry properties of planar knotoids such as invertibility and chirality. Furthermore we introduce an invariant called the triangular quandle cocycle invariant and show that it is a stronger invariant than the end specified quandle colorings.

Abstract:Joyce has shown that the fundamental quandle of a classical knot can be derived from consideration of the fundamental group and the peripheral structure of the knot, and also that the group and much of the peripheral structure can be recovered from the quandle. We generalize these results to arbitrary dimensions, and also to virtual and welded knots and arcs.

Abstract:The fundamental quandle is a complete invariant for unoriented tame knots \cite{JO, Ma} and non-split links \cite{FR}. The proof involves proving a relationship between the components of the fundamental quandle and the cosets of the peripheral subgroup(s) in the fundamental group of the knot or link. We extend these relationships to spatial graphs, and to $N$-quandles of links and spatial graphs. As an application, we are able to give a complete list of links with finite $N$-quandles, proving a conjecture from \cite{MS}, and a partial list of spatial graphs with finite $N$-quandles.

Abstract:Biquandles are generalizations of quandles. As well as quandles, biquandles give us many invariants for oriented classical/virtual/surface links. Some invariants derived from biquandles are known to be stronger than those from quandles for virtual links. However, we have not found an essentially refined invariant for classical/surface links so far. In this paper, we give an explicit one-to-one correspondence between biquandle colorings and quandle colorings for classical/surface links. We also show that biquandle homotopy invariants and quandle homotopy invariants are equivalent. As a byproduct, we can interpret biquandle cocycle invariants in terms of shadow quandle cocycle invariants.

Abstract:We define a family of quiver representation-valued invariants of oriented classical and virtual knots and links associated to a choice of finite quandle $X$, abelian group $A$, set of quandle 2-cocycles $C\subset H^2_Q(x;A)$, choice of coefficient ring $k$ and set of quandle endomorphisms $S\subset \mathrm{Hom}(X,X)$. From this representation we define four new polynomial (or ``polynomial'' depending on $A$) invariants. We generalize to the case of biquandles and compute some examples.

On Profinite Quandles

Abstract:We undertake the study of profinite quandles. We provide several constructions of profinite quandles from profinite groups, and from other profinite quandle. We characterize which subquandles of profinite quandles are again profinite. Finally, we provide a characterization of algebraically connected profinite quandles in terms of the profinite completion of their inner automorphism groups $\widehat{\Inn(Q)}$. It is anticipated that the results herein will find applications to the étale homotopy theory of number fields. v.2 has been updated to include an example due to Ariel Davis settling in the negative the question of whether all Stone topological quandles are profinite.

Abstract:A quandle is an algebraic system originated in knot theory, and can be regarded as a generalization of symmetric spaces. The inner automorphism group of a quandle is defined as the group generated by the point symmetries (right multiplications). In this paper, starting from any simple graphs, we construct quandles whose inner automorphism groups are abelian. We also prove that the constructed quandle is homogeneous if and only if the graph is vertex-transitive. This shows that there is a wide family of quandles with abelian inner automorphism groups, even if we impose the homogeneity. The key examples of such quandles are realized as subquandles of oriented real Grassmannian manifolds.

Abstract:We give a purely combinatorial proof of a Künneth formula for the minus version of knot Floer homology of connected sums by constructing a quasi-isomorphism of grid chain complexes. The quasi-isomorphism naturally deduces that the Legendrian and transverse invariants behave functorially with respect to the connected sum operation.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that if M K is the complement of a non-fibered twist knot K in [Formula: see text], then M K is not commensurable to a fibered knot complement in a Z/2Z-homology sphere. To prove this result we derive a recursive description of the character variety of twist knots and then prove that a commensurability criterion developed by Calegari and Dunfield is satisfied for these varieties. In addition, we partially extend our results to a second infinite family of 2-bridge knots.

Unlinking symmetric quivers

Abstract:We analyse the structure of equivalence classes of symmetric quivers whose generating series are equal. We consider such classes constructed using the basic operation of unlinking, which increases a size of a quiver. The existence and features of such classes do not depend on a particular quiver but follow from the properties of unlinking. We show that such classes include sets of quivers assembled into permutohedra, and all quivers in a given class are determined by one quiver of the largest size, which we call a universal quiver. These findings generalise the previous ones for permutohedra graphs for knots. We illustrate our results with generic examples, as well as specialisations related to the knots-quivers correspondence.

Abstract:In [3] quandle cohomology is used to produce invariants for particular embeddings of codimension two; 2-cocycles give rise to invariants for (classical) knots and 3-cocycles give rise to invariants for knotted surfaces. This is done by way of a notion of coloring of a diagram. Also, these invariants have the form of the state-sums (or partition functions) used in Statistical Mechanics. By a careful analysis of these colorings of diagrams we are able to come up with new invariants which correspond to calculation of the partition function at finite temperatures.

Abstract:We show that the second bounded cohomology of finitely generated free racks is infinite dimensional by constructing rack quasimorphisms using homogenous group quasimorphisms. Similar construction works in the case of free quandles. We show that Rolli's generalization to free products also works in the case of racks.

Abstract:In this paper we clarify an issue in the knot surgery construction of Fintushel and Stern. Using knot surgery, they construct an infinite number of smooth structures on 4-manifolds satisfying certain conditions, but they do not explicitly work out the circumstances under which two manifolds that arise from their construction will fail to be diffeomorphic on the grounds of Seiberg-Witten theory. This paper fills in that gap.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

On the quandles of isometries of the hyperbolic 3-space

Abstract:A quandle is an algebraic structure whose axioms are related to the Reidemeister moves used in knot theory. In this paper, we investigate the conjugate quandle of the orientation-preserving isometry group $\mathrm{PSL}(2, \mathbb{C})$ of hyperbolic 3-space and its subquandles. We introduce a quandle, denoted by $Q(\Gamma, \gamma)$, associated with a pair $(\Gamma, \gamma)$. Here, $\Gamma$ is a Kleinian group, and $\gamma$ is a non-trivial element of $\Gamma$. This construction can be regarded as a generalization of knot quandles to hyperbolic knots. Moreover, for pairs $(\Gamma, \gamma)$ satisfying certain conditions, we construct the canonical map from $Q(\Gamma, \gamma)$ to the conjugate quandle of $\mathrm{PSL}(2, \mathbb{C})$, which is an injective quandle homomorphism with a discrete image.
