Abstract:Plasmonic nanoantennas (PNs) comprised of film-coupled or in-plane coupled nanoparticles have been exploited for light confinement or field enhancement. However, achieving strong local electric field enhancements (vertical bar E-1oc vertical bar/vertical bar E-0 vertical bar > 100) and near-perfect absorption (>95%) simultaneously remains a challenge, although it will benefit a wide range of applications. Here Ag/A1203/Au PNs are proposed by introducing high-density triangular nanodisks into film-coupled systems, which can produce dense "hot spots" with a large vertical bar E-1oc vertical bar/vertical bar E-0 vertical bar of 211 and a near-unity absorbance. Due to the combination of the strong lightning rod effect and the out-of-plane, coupling, the MIM structure combined with the trian effectively,enhances the coupling, strength and thereby the electric field confinements along the x-, y-, and z-directions in film coupled PNs, showing a lateral resolution as small as 4 nm. The highest vertical bar E-1oc vertical bar/vertical bar E-0 vertical bar is more than three times higher than for their Circular and square counterparts and more than four times higher than for isolated triangular nanodisks. The near-perfect absorption results from the magnetic resonance induced by plasmonic coupling. Compared to the bowtie-shaped PNs based on the in-plane coupling, the developed PNs here offer more desired advantages including the polarization-independent near-perfect absorption, much larger field' enhancements, and greater potential' for large-scale production.

Abstract:We report the enhancement of the mid-infrared (MIR) luminescence intensity in a nanoscale metal/semiconductor structure by the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with excitons in a narrow-gap semiconductor. The SPPs are efficiently excited by the total internal reflection photons at a metal/semiconductor interface. The intense electric field induced by SPPs, in turn, greatly changes the radiative recombination rates of the excitons generated by the pumping laser and thus the MIR luminescence intensity. The finding avails the understanding of fundamental science of SPs in narrow-gap semiconductors and the development of novel MIR devices. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2016
Two-scale structure for giant field enhancement: combination of Rayleigh anomaly and colloidal plasmonic resonance

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhancements from oligomers, with feature size of tens of nanometers, with a Rayleigh anomaly caused by a 1-D set of periodic nanorods, having a period on the order of the excitation wavelength, provides a mean to produce enhancement beyond that constrained by losses in near field resonances. Metallic oligomers are chemically assembled in between the periodic set of nanorods that are fabricated using lithographic methods. The nanorod periodicity is investigated to induce the Rayleigh anomaly at the oligomers plasmonic resonance wavelength to further enhance the field in the oligomers hot spots. A thorough study of this structure is carried out by using an effective analytical-numerical model which is also compared to full-wave simulation results. Experimental results comparing enhancements in surface enhanced Raman scattering measurements with and without nanorods demonstrate the effectiveness of a Rayleigh anomaly in boosting the field enhancement. The proposed structure is expected to be beneficial for many applications ranging from medical diagnostics to sensors and solar cells.

Hybridization of electromagnetic multipoles in a nanoscatterer in the presence of another nanoscatterer

Abstract:Coupling between multipolar modes of different orders has not been investigated in depth, despite its fundamental and practical relevance in the context of optical metamaterials and metasurfaces. Here, we use an electromagnetic multipole expansion of both the scattered fields and the oscillating electric currents to reveal the multipolar excitations in a nanoparticle positioned close to another nanoparticle. The considered single-particle multipoles radically differ from multipoles excited in a pair of nanoparticles. Using the expansion, we reveal the multipole character of the electric currents and the contributions of the multipole moments to the scattering cross section of each particle, including the effect of their interaction. We find that light scattered by the particles plays the role of an inhomogeneous incident field for each of the particles, leading to hybridization of the originally independent orthogonal multipole resonances. For an incident plane wave polarized along the nanoparticle pair, the hybridization of the dipole and quadrupolar resonances gives rise to a significant narrowband resonance in the spectrum of the dipole scattering, which can be of interest for various applications, e.g., in surface-enhanced fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. In general, this work shows that the multipole-multipole interaction between nanoparticles must be treated by taking into account also such hybridized multipole resonances.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the effects of interaction between an optical dipole (semiconductor quantum dot or molecule) and metal nanoparticles. The calculated absorption spectra of hybrid structures demonstrate strong effects of interference coming from the exciton-plasmon coupling. In particular, the absorption spectra acquire characteristic asymmetric lineshapes and strong anti-resonances. We present here an exact solution of the problem beyond the dipole approximation and find that the multipole treatment of the interaction is crucial for the understanding of strongly-interacting exciton-plasmon nano-systems. Interestingly, the visibility of the exciton resonance becomes greatly enhanced for small inter-particle distances due to the interference phenomenon, multipole effects, and electromagnetic enhancement. We find that the destructive interference is particularly strong. Using our exact theory, we show that the interference effects can be observed experimentally even in the exciting systems at room temperature.

Strong Anapole-Plasmon Coupling in Dielectric-Metallic Hybrid Nanostructures

Abstract:The nanoscale ampification of light-matter interactions exhibits profound potential in multiple scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, surface science, materials science, and nanophotonics. Nonetheless, achieving robust optical mode coupling within cavities faces significant hurdles due to modal dispersion and weak optical field confinement. In this theoretical investigation, we demonstrate the viability of strong coupling between the anapole mode of a slotted silicon nanodisk and the plasmonic modes of an Ag nanodisk dimer at visible light frequencies. By introducing anapole modes, we successfully confine light to subwavelength volumes, suppressing radiative losses and achieving a remarkable Rabi splitting of 468 meV. This substantial coupling is facilitated by the large spatial overlap of intense optical fields. Capitalizing on this strong mode coupling, we generate novel hybrid energy states with significant electromagnetic field enhancement. Our study serves as a valuable blueprint for designing platforms based on strong anapole mode coupling at visible frequencies and paves the way for deeper explorations into nanoscale light-matter interactions.

Near-field enhancement by waveguide-plasmon polaritons in a nonlocal metasurface

Abstract:Localized surface plasmons in metal nanoparticles are widely used in nano-optics to confine and enhance optical fields. It has been previously shown that, if the nanoparticles are distributed periodically, an additional enhancement can be achieved by coupling the localized surface plasmons to the diffraction orders of the lattice, forming surface lattice resonances. In this work, we study an even further improvement of the near-field enhancement by placing a metal-dielectric slab waveguide beneath the lattice of the particles to excite coupled waveguide-plasmon polaritons. These excitations can extend over many periods of the lattice, making the metasurface highly nonlocal. We numerically demonstrate that the approach can provide a significant extra increase in the near-field intensity -- by a factor of 80 over that produced by a single-particle plasmon resonance and by 7 over the lattice-resonance enhancement. The described enhancement mechanism can be used to design extraordinarily efficient nonlocal optical metasurfaces for many applications, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:The enhancement of light from semiconductors due to surface plasmons coupled resonantly to its emission is limited because of dissipation in the metal and is also restricted by the dielectric characteristics and homogeneity of the metal-semiconductor interface. We report a new mechanism based on electrostatic interactions of carriers and their image charges in metals to generate more photons from optical sources at frequencies that are off-resonant to the localized plasmon frequency. Coulomb catalysis of carrier accumulation resulting from the inhomogeneity of metal nanodroplets on a semiconductor's surface can result in an enhancement of light that is nondissipative and does not require resonant coupling of plasmons to the emission wavelength. The enhancement occurs because of an increase in the ratio of radiative to nonradiative recombination in the vicinity of metal nanoparticles. It is equally effective with any type of metal and enhances radiation at any frequency, a property that is of principal importance for the realization of widely tunable semiconductor emitters. This fundamental mechanism provides a new perspective for improving the efficiency of light emitters and controlling carrier concentration on the nanoscale. The structural characteristics of the hybrid metal-semiconductor emitters are studied using electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate the electrostatic mechanism by studying steady-state and transient photoluminescence from two-dimensional semiconductors, such as GaAs/AlGAs quantum wells, and bulk semiconductors, such as ZnO thin films, emitting in the near-IR and UV wavelength regimes, respectively.

Abstract:The design of many promising, newly emerging classes of photonic metamaterials and subwavelength confinement structures requires detailed knowledge and understanding of the electromagnetic near-field interactions between their building blocks. While the electric field distributions and, respectively, the electric interactions of different nanostructures can be routinely measured, for example, by scattering near-field microscopy, only recently experimental methods for imaging the magnetic field distributions became available. In this paper, we provide direct experimental maps of the lateral magnetic near-field distributions of variously shaped plasmonic nanoantennas by using hollow-pyramid aperture scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). We study both simple plasmonic nanoresonators, such as bars, disks, rings and more complex antennas. For the studied structures, the magnetic near-field distributions of the complex resonators have been found to be a superposition of the magnetic near-fields of the individual constituting elements. These experimental results, explained and validated by numerical simulations, open new possibilities for engineering and characterization of complex plasmonic antennas with increased functionality.
Double-ring-disk hybrid nanostructures with slits for electric field enhancement

Abstract:Although noble metal nanoantennas have distinctive optical properties and local electric field enhancement, considerable non-radiative ohmic losses occur at the optical frequencies, consequently creating significant absorption and unwanted heating. Combining the plasmon mode of metal nanoantennas with the anapole mode of high refractive index dielectric materials offers a promising alternative to increase the electric field strength with minimal loss. Herein, a silicon disk with slots and two Au rings with a coupling mechanism are described. To elucidate the field enhancement mechanism, the near-field enhancement features and near-field electric field distributions are explored by a numerical simulation and multipole decomposition analysis. By opening the slit to generate high-intensity hot spots inside the disk, the electric field can be enhanced significantly, and nearby molecules can directly contact these hot spots. The resulting large field enhancement suggests significant applications to strong photon-exciton coupling and nonlinear photonics.
Increasing the electric field amplification in the metal-insulator-metal structure with a grating hybrid of bowtie nanotriangle and cylindrical nanodisc

Abstract:In this paper, the strong electromagnetic coupling between an integrated grating of an array of periodic gold nanodiscs and an array of bowtie nanotriangles placed on layers of a dielectric and a metal has been investigated. The upper layer is periodically created by removing each nanodisk in the array of nanodisks and replacing it with bowtie nanotriangles. The structure for near field radiation with linear polarization at 800 nm wavelength is optimized so that it has the highest amount of amplification in the gap space between the tips of the nanotriangle with a minimum value of 188 times and a maximum of 320 times. The simulation results confirm that the huge field enhancement obtained is due to the strong coupling between the LSPR formed in the grating of bowties nano triangle and nanodiscs and the SPPs formed in the metal film. The amount of amplification compared to the array of only nanodiscs (about 32 times) or only bowtie nano triangles (about 120 times) is not only higher, but also the anti-crossing behavior is observed. The high amplification obtained at the mentioned wavelength can be used for laser oscillators with a central wavelength of 800 nm, such as titanium sapphire, etc., which has many applications in near-field physics, SERS, and ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Optical nanoantennas can efficiently harvest electromagnetic energy from nanoscale space and boost the local radiation to the far field. The dielectric-metal nanogap is a novel design that can help to overcome the core issue of optical loss in all-metal nanostructures while enabling photon density of states larger than that in all-dielectric counterparts. This article reports that a crystalline spherical silicon nanoparticle on metal film (SiNPoM) nanoantenna can largely enhance the spontaneous emission intensity of quantum dots by an area-normalized factor of 69 and the decay rate by 42-fold compared with quantum dots on glass. A high total quantum efficiency of over 80%, including ~20% for far-field radiation and ~60% for surface plasmon polaritons, is obtained in simulation. Thanks to not only the low optical loss in dielectric nanoparticles but also the appropriate gap thickness which weakens the non-radiative decay due to the quenching from metal. Mie resonant modes additionally provide the flexible control of far-field emission patterns. Such a simple optical nanoantenna can be combined with various nanoscale optical emitters and easily extended to form large area metasurfaces functioning as active regions in light-emitting devices in applications such as advanced display, wireless optical communication, and quantum technology.
Enhanced excitation and emission from 2D transition metal dichalcogenides with all-dielectric nanoantennas

Abstract:The recently emerged concept of all-dielectric nanophotonics based on optical Mie resonances in high-index dielectric nanoparticles has proven to be a promising pathway to boost light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. In this work, we discuss the opportunities enabled by the interaction of dielectric nanoresonators with 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs), leading to weak and strong coupling regimes. We perform a comprehensive analysis of bright exciton photoluminescence (PL) enhancement from various 2D TMDCs, including WS2, MoS2, WSe2, and MoSe2 via their coupling to Mie resonances of a silicon nanoparticle. For each case, we find the system parameters corresponding to maximal PL enhancement taking into account excitation rate, Purcell factor and radiation efficiency. We demonstrate numerically that all-dielectric Si nanoantennas can significantly enhance the PL intensity from 2D TMDC by a factor of hundred through precise optimization of the geometrical and material parameters. Our results may be useful for high-efficiency 2D TMDC-based optoelectronic, nanophotonic, and quantum optical devices.

Abstract:Point source excitation and point detection in the near field provides new perspective to study the near-field optical phenomena of plasmonic nanostructures. Using the automated dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), we have measured the optical near-field response of a dipolar emission near the edge of a monocrystalline gold platelet. The image dipole method was used to analytically calculate the interference pattern due to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited at the position of aperture tip and those reflected from edges of the gold platelet. The near-field enhancement was observed on the edges of the gold platelet. Our results verify that automated dual-tip SNOM is an intriguing technique for quantum plasmonic studies where deterministic coupling of quantum emitters and the detection of the near-field enhancement are of great interest.

Abstract:Considering the nanogap and lattice effects, there is an attractive structure in plasmonics: closely spaced metallic nanoarrays. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the lattice coupling of multipole plasmon modes for closely spaced gold nanorod arrays, offering a new insight into the higher order cavity modes coupled with each other in the lattice. The resonances can be greatly tuned by changes in inter-rod gaps and nanorod heights while the influence of the nanorod diameter is relatively insignificant. Experimentally, pronounced suppressions of the reflectance are observed. Meanwhile, the near-field enhancement can be further enhanced, as demonstrated through surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We then confirm the correlation between the near-field and far-field plasmonic responses, which is significantly important for maximizing the near-field enhancement at a specific excitation wavelength. This lattice coupling of multipole plasmon modes is of broad interest not only for SERS but also for other plasmonic applications, such as subwavelength imaging or metamaterials.
Strong Coupling of Two-Dimensional Excitons and Plasmonic Photonic Crystals: Microscopic Theory Reveals Triplet Spectra

Abstract:Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are direct-gap semiconductors with strong light-matter interactions featuring tightly bound excitons, while plasmonic crystals (PCs), consisting of metal nanoparticles that act as meta-atoms, exhibit collective plasmon modes and allow one to tailor electric fields on the nanoscale. Recent experiments show that TMDC-PC hybrids can reach the strong-coupling limit between excitons and plasmons forming new quasiparticles, so-called plexcitons. To describe this coupling theoretically, we develop a self-consistent Maxwell-Bloch theory for TMDC-PC hybrid structures, which allows us to compute the scattered light in the near- and far-field explicitly and provide guidance for experimental studies. Our calculations reveal a spectral splitting signature of strong coupling of more than $100\,$meV in gold-MoSe$_2$ structures with $30\,$nm nanoparticles, manifesting in a hybridization of exciton and plasmon into two effective plexcitonic bands. In addition to the hybridized states, we find a remaining excitonic mode with significantly smaller coupling to the plasmonic near-field, emitting directly into the far-field. Thus, hybrid spectra in the strong coupling regime can contain three emission peaks.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanocavities form very robust sub-nanometer gaps between nanometallic structures and confine light in deep subwavelength volumes to enable unprecedented control on light-matter interactions. However, spherical nanoparticles acquire various polyhedral shapes during their synthesis, which has defining impact on controlling many light-matter interactions, such as photocatalytic reactions. Here, we focus on nanocavities made of three polyhedral nanoparticles (cuboctahedron, rhombicuboctahedron, decahedron) that commonly occur during the synthesis of spherical nanoparticles. Their photonic modes have a very intricate and rich optical behaviour, both in the near- and far-field. Through a recombination technique, we obtain the total far-field produced by a molecule placed within these nanocavities, to reveal how energy couples in and out of the system. This work paves the way towards understanding and controlling light-matter interactions, such as photocatalytic reactions and non-linear vibrational pumping, in such extreme environments.

Abstract:Plasmonic nano-objects have shown great potential in enhancing applications like biological/chemical sensing, light harvesting and energy transfer, and optical/quantum computing. Therefore, an extensive effort has been vested in optimizing plasmonic systems and exploiting their field enhancement properties. Super-resolution imaging with quantum dots (QDs) is a promising method to probe plasmonic near-fields but is hindered by the distortion of the QD radiation pattern. Here, we investigate the interaction between QDs and "L-shaped" gold nanoantennas and demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that this strong interaction can induce polarization-dependent modifications to the apparent QD emission intensity, polarization, and localization. Based on FDTD simulations and polarization-modulated single-molecule microscopy, we show that the displacement of the emitter's localization is due to the position-dependent interference between the emitter and the induced dipole, and can be up to 100 nm. Our results help pave a pathway for higher precision plasmonic near-field mapping and its underlying applications.
