Abstract:It is been widely reported that plasmonic effects in metallic nanomaterials can enhance light trapping in organix solar cells (OSCs). However, typical nanoparticles (NP) of high quality (i.e., mono-dispersive) only possess a single resonant absorption peak, which inevitably limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement to a narrow spectral range. Broadband plasmonic absorption is obviously highly desirable. In this paper, a combination of Ag nanomaterials of different shapes, including nanoparticles and nanoprisms, is proposed for this purpose. The nanomaterials are synthesized using a simple wet chemical method. Theoretical and experimental studies show that the origin of the observed PCE enhancement is the simultaneous excitation of many plasmonic low- and high-order resonances modes, which are material-, shape-, size-, and polarization-dependent. Particularly for the Ag nanoprisms studied here, the high-order resonances result in higher contribution than low-order resonances to the absorption enhancement of OSCs through an improved overlap with the active material absorption spectrum. With the incorporation of the mixed nanomaterials into the active layer, a wide-band absorption improvement is demonstrated and the short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) improves by 17.91%. Finally, PCE is enhanced by 19.44% as compared to pre-optimized control OSCs. These results suggest a new approach to achieve higher overall enhancement through improving broadband absorption.
Enhancement of Light Emission from Nanostructured In(2)O(3) Via Surface Plasmons.

Abstract:We report the construction of In(2)O(3)/Ag/In(2)O(3) sandwich nanostructures and realization of effective coupling with surface plasmon (SP) modes. An enhancement of photoluminescence as large as 278-fold is achieved for the new nanostructures, while only eightfold is obtained from bilayer structures. The advancement of the nanostructures is that both the frequency of incidence photons and the in-plane wavevector of the excited SP modes along each side of the sandwiched nanometer metal layer are identical, thus the momenta mismatch between two SP modes which inevitably occurs in commonly used metal/dielectric bilayer structures is no longer a problem. The fulfillment of the cross coupling and resonance conditions of the two SP modes leads to the tremendous amplification of light emission. Such sandwich nanostructures can be readily extended to other dielectric/metal/dielectric nanomaterial combinations and identified as technologically useful for SP mediated light emitting devices.
Metallic Nanodroplet Induced Coulomb Catalysis for Off-Resonant Plasmonic Enhancement of Photoemission in Semiconductors

Abstract:The enhancement of light from semiconductors due to surface plasmons coupled resonantly to its emission is limited because of dissipation in the metal and is also restricted by the dielectric characteristics and homogeneity of the metal-semiconductor interface. We report a new mechanism based on electrostatic interactions of carriers and their image charges in metals to generate more photons from optical sources at frequencies that are off-resonant to the localized plasmon frequency. Coulomb catalysis of carrier accumulation resulting from the inhomogeneity of metal nanodroplets on a semiconductor's surface can result in an enhancement of light that is nondissipative and does not require resonant coupling of plasmons to the emission wavelength. The enhancement occurs because of an increase in the ratio of radiative to nonradiative recombination in the vicinity of metal nanoparticles. It is equally effective with any type of metal and enhances radiation at any frequency, a property that is of principal importance for the realization of widely tunable semiconductor emitters. This fundamental mechanism provides a new perspective for improving the efficiency of light emitters and controlling carrier concentration on the nanoscale. The structural characteristics of the hybrid metal-semiconductor emitters are studied using electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate the electrostatic mechanism by studying steady-state and transient photoluminescence from two-dimensional semiconductors, such as GaAs/AlGAs quantum wells, and bulk semiconductors, such as ZnO thin films, emitting in the near-IR and UV wavelength regimes, respectively.

Abstract:We report the enhancement of the mid-infrared (MIR) luminescence intensity in a nanoscale metal/semiconductor structure by the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with excitons in a narrow-gap semiconductor. The SPPs are efficiently excited by the total internal reflection photons at a metal/semiconductor interface. The intense electric field induced by SPPs, in turn, greatly changes the radiative recombination rates of the excitons generated by the pumping laser and thus the MIR luminescence intensity. The finding avails the understanding of fundamental science of SPs in narrow-gap semiconductors and the development of novel MIR devices. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2016
Two-scale structure for giant field enhancement: combination of Rayleigh anomaly and colloidal plasmonic resonance

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhancements from oligomers, with feature size of tens of nanometers, with a Rayleigh anomaly caused by a 1-D set of periodic nanorods, having a period on the order of the excitation wavelength, provides a mean to produce enhancement beyond that constrained by losses in near field resonances. Metallic oligomers are chemically assembled in between the periodic set of nanorods that are fabricated using lithographic methods. The nanorod periodicity is investigated to induce the Rayleigh anomaly at the oligomers plasmonic resonance wavelength to further enhance the field in the oligomers hot spots. A thorough study of this structure is carried out by using an effective analytical-numerical model which is also compared to full-wave simulation results. Experimental results comparing enhancements in surface enhanced Raman scattering measurements with and without nanorods demonstrate the effectiveness of a Rayleigh anomaly in boosting the field enhancement. The proposed structure is expected to be beneficial for many applications ranging from medical diagnostics to sensors and solar cells.

Enhanced Intrinsic Luminescence of Metal Nanostructures During Plasmon Enhanced Spectroscopy

Abstract:Metal nanostructures have intrinsic light emission after photon or electron excitations. We demonstrate that this intrinsic luminescence can be enhanced by plasmon enhanced spectroscopy including surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF). The interaction between the metal nanostructures and the molecule was modeled based on the concept of quantized optical cavity. We revealed that the intrinsic luminescence enhancement is ascribed mainly to the increase in local field felt by the metal nanostructures. These findings contribute to the deeper understanding of SERS and SEF, and suggest that the metal nanostructures and molecules are considered as a hybrid entity to analyze and optimize surface enhanced spectroscopy.We found that the plasmonic nanostructures can enhance the excitation rate of the molecule and elastically scatter the energy coupling from the molecules with larger radiative rate, as expected, those resulting in significantly enhanced molecule Raman scattering. Meanwhile, part of the coupling energy was inelastically radiated through plasmonic resonator emission, resulting in a slight enhancement of the intrinsic luminescence of the metal due to very small dipole momentum of the molecules with compared to that of the metal.Furthermore, by comparing single nanoparticle experiment and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the intrinsic luminescence enhancement from the metal nanostructures is ascribed mainly to the increase in local field felt by the metal nanostructures. Because the “hot spot” owing to the nanostructures can strongly polarize the molecules within it, then, the induced field of the polarized molecules influences the local field felt by the metal nanostructures in turn. These findings contribute to the deeper understanding of SERS and suggest that the metal nanostructures and molecules are considered as a hybrid entity to analyze and optimize surface enhanced spectroscopy.
Enhancing the Light Transmission of Plasmonic Metamaterials Through Polygonal Aperture Arrays

Abstract:While plasmonic metamaterials find numerous applications in the field of nanophotonic devices, a device may work as a normal or plasmonic device, depending on whether it operates at the resonance mode. In this paper, the extraordinary light transmission through coaxial polygonal aperture arrays, including circle, hexagon, square, and triangle geometries, is studied using FDTD simulation. Circular, hexagonal and squared aperture arrays have similar high transmission rate, while triangular aperture array has considerably lower transmission rate. It is found that the transmission peaks reflect the resonance modes propagating along the direction of neighboring apertures. We hence rearrange the apertures from square lattice to triangle lattice to obtain a uniform resonance mode along the neighboring apertures. This leads to enhanced light transmission. The study gains understanding of new properties of the metamaterials based on plasmonic resonance.
Plasmonic engineering of metal nanoparticles for enhanced fluorescence and Raman scattering

Abstract:We have investigated the effects of tuning the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of silver nanoparticles on the fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and Raman signal from nearby fluorophores. The presence of a metallic structure can alter the optical properties of a molecule by increasing the excitation field, and by modifying radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. By careful choice of experimental parameters we have been able to decouple these effects. We observe a four-fold increase in fluorescence enhancement and an almost 30-fold increase in decay rate from arrays of Ag nanoparticles, when the LSPR is tuned to the emission wavelength of a locally situated fluorophore. This is consistent with a greatly increased efficiency for energy transfer from fluorescence to surface plasmons. Additionally, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements show a maximum enhancement occurs when both the incident laser light and the Raman signal are near resonance with the plasmon energy. Spatial mapping of the SERS signal from a nanoparticle array reveals highly localized differences in the excitation field resulting from small differences in the LSPR energy.

Abstract:We report modifications to the optical properties of fluorophores in the vicinity of noble metal nanotips. The fluorescence from small clusters of quantum dots has been imaged using an apertureless scanning near-field optical microscope. When a sharp gold tip is brought close to the sample surface, a strong distance-dependent enhancement of the quantum dot fluorescence is observed, leading to a simultaneous increase in optical resolution. These results are consistent with simulations of the electric field and fluorescence enhancement near plasmonic nanostructures. Highly ordered periodic arrays of silver nanotips have been fabricated by nanosphere lithography. Using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we have created high resolution spatial maps of the lifetime components of vicinal fluorophores; these show an order of magnitude increase in decay rate from a localized volume around the nanotips, resulting in a commensurate enhancement in the fluorescence emission intensity. Spatial maps of the Raman scattering signal from molecules on the nanotips shows an enhancement of more than 5 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new strategy for efficiently enhancing fluorescence, based on the coupling of surface plasmons of metal particles with optical properties of colloidal photonic crystals. It is found that such coupling can effectively improve the near-field effect and induced plasmon effect of metal particles but also be favorable for the extraction of the emission, collectively leading to a further significant enhancement of metal-enhanced fluorescence. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation proved the related enhancement mechanism for the designed hybrid system. As a proof of concept, an enhancement factor up to 260-fold has been experimentally achieved by using rhodamine B as test molecule, which greatly transcends those of two individual plasmonic and photonic components and is also much larger than the simple plus effects of the two components.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes can be dramatically enhanced via the use of localized surface plasmon modes in metal nanoparticles. Here we show how more elaborate structures, based on shape-controlled Au/Cu2O core/shell nanostructures, enable further enhancement of the nanoparticle third-harmonic scattering cross-section. The semiconducting component takes a twofold role in this structure, both providing a knob to tune the resonant frequency of the gold plasmon and providing resonant enhancement by virtue of its excitonic states. The advantages and deficiencies of using such core/shell metal/semiconductor structures are discussed.

Abstract:The nanoscale ampification of light-matter interactions exhibits profound potential in multiple scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, surface science, materials science, and nanophotonics. Nonetheless, achieving robust optical mode coupling within cavities faces significant hurdles due to modal dispersion and weak optical field confinement. In this theoretical investigation, we demonstrate the viability of strong coupling between the anapole mode of a slotted silicon nanodisk and the plasmonic modes of an Ag nanodisk dimer at visible light frequencies. By introducing anapole modes, we successfully confine light to subwavelength volumes, suppressing radiative losses and achieving a remarkable Rabi splitting of 468 meV. This substantial coupling is facilitated by the large spatial overlap of intense optical fields. Capitalizing on this strong mode coupling, we generate novel hybrid energy states with significant electromagnetic field enhancement. Our study serves as a valuable blueprint for designing platforms based on strong anapole mode coupling at visible frequencies and paves the way for deeper explorations into nanoscale light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Carbon dots can be used for the fabrication of colloidal multi-purpose complexes for sensing and bio-visualization due to their easy and scalable synthesis, control of their spectral responses over a wide spectral range, and possibility of surface functionalization to meet the application task. Here, we developed a chemical protocol of colloidal complex formation via covalent bonding between carbon dots and plasmonic metal nanoparticles in order to influence and improve their fluorescence. We demonstrate how interactions between carbon dots and metal nanoparticles in the formed complexes, and thus their optical responses, depend on the type of bonds between particles, the architecture of the complexes, and the degree of overlapping of absorption and emission of carbon dots with the plasmon resonance of metals. For the most optimized architecture, emission enhancement reaching up to 5.4- and 4.9-fold for complexes with silver and gold nanoparticles has been achieved, respectively. Our study expands the toolkit of functional materials based on carbon dots for applications in photonics and biomedicine to photonics.

Surface Plasmon Polariton–enhanced Photoluminescence of Monolayer MoS2 on Suspended Periodic Metallic Structures

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have garnered tremendous interest in enhanced light-matter interaction because of their unique capability of extreme field confinement in nanoscale, especially beneficial for boosting the photoluminescence (PL) signals of weak light-matter interaction materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides atomic crystals. Here we report the surface plasmon polariton (SPP)-assisted PL enhancement of MoS2 monolayer via a suspended periodic metallic (SPM) structure. Without involving metallic nanoparticle-based plasmonic geometries, the SPM structure can enable more than two orders of magnitude PL enhancement. Systematic analysis unravels the underlying physics of the pronounced enhancement to two primary plasmonic effects: concentrated local field of SPP enabled excitation rate increment (45.2) as well as the quantum yield amplification (5.4 times) by the SPM nanostructure, overwhelming most of the nanoparticle-based geometries reported thus far. Our results provide a powerful way to boost two-dimensional exciton emission by plasmonic effects which may shed light on the on-chip photonic integration of 2D materials.
Greatly Amplified Spontaneous Emission of Colloidal Quantum Dots Mediated by a Dielectric-Plasmonic Hybrid Nanoantenna

Abstract:Optical nanoantennas can efficiently harvest electromagnetic energy from nanoscale space and boost the local radiation to the far field. The dielectric-metal nanogap is a novel design that can help to overcome the core issue of optical loss in all-metal nanostructures while enabling photon density of states larger than that in all-dielectric counterparts. This article reports that a crystalline spherical silicon nanoparticle on metal film (SiNPoM) nanoantenna can largely enhance the spontaneous emission intensity of quantum dots by an area-normalized factor of 69 and the decay rate by 42-fold compared with quantum dots on glass. A high total quantum efficiency of over 80%, including ~20% for far-field radiation and ~60% for surface plasmon polaritons, is obtained in simulation. Thanks to not only the low optical loss in dielectric nanoparticles but also the appropriate gap thickness which weakens the non-radiative decay due to the quenching from metal. Mie resonant modes additionally provide the flexible control of far-field emission patterns. Such a simple optical nanoantenna can be combined with various nanoscale optical emitters and easily extended to form large area metasurfaces functioning as active regions in light-emitting devices in applications such as advanced display, wireless optical communication, and quantum technology.
Augmenting Photoluminescence of Monolayer MoS2 Using High Order Modes in a Metal Dimer-on-film Nanocavity

Abstract:Plasmonic particle-on-film nanocavities, supporting gap modes with ultra-small volume, provide a great solution to boost light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. In this work, we report on the photoluminescence (PL) enhancement of monolayer MoS 2 using high order modes of an Au nanosphere dimer-on-film nanocavity (DoFN). The high order plasmon modes, consisting of two bonding quadrupoles in the dimer and their images in the Au film, are revealed by combining the polarization-resolved scattering spectra with the numerical simulations. Further integrating the monolayer MoS 2 into the DoFN, these high order modes are used to enhance PL intensity through simultaneously boosting the absorption and emission processes, producing a 1350-fold enhancement factor. It opens an avenue to enhance the light–matter interaction with high order plasmon modes and may find applications in future optoelectronics and nanophotonics devices.
Enhanced Control of Quantum Dot Photoluminescence in Hybrid Assemblies

Abstract:The distance-dependent interaction of an emitter with a plasmonic nanoparticle or surface forms the basis of the field of plexitonics. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are robust emitters due to their photostability, and offer the possibility of understanding the fundamental photophysics between one emitter and one metal nanoparticle. A key enabling challenge is the formation of systems containing both QDs and plasmonic nanoparticles in high purity. We present the translation of DNA-based self-assembly techniques to assemble metal and semiconductor nanocrystals into discrete hybrid structures, including dimers, of high purity. This method gives control over the interparticle separation, geometry, and ratio of QD:metal nanoparticle, as well as the spectral properties of the metal/QD components in the assembly to allow investigation of plasmon-exciton interaction. The hybrid assemblies show the expected enhancement in steady-state photoluminescence accompanied by an increase in the QD emission rate for assemblies with a strong overlap between the QD emission and localised surface plasmon resonance. In contrast, lengthening of the QD emission lifetime (a reduction of the emission rate) of up to 1.7-fold, along with an enhancement in steady-state PL of 15-75% is observed upon detuning of the QD and metal nanoparticle spectral properties. This understood in terms of the Purcell effect, where the gold nanoparticle acts as a damped, nanoscale cavity. Considering the metal nanoparticle using generalised nonlocal optical response theory (GNOR) and the QD as an open quantum system, the response is driven by the interference experienced by the emitter for parallel and perpendicular field orientations. This provides a mechanism for control of the emission rate of a QD by a metal nanoparticle across a much wider range of lifetimes than previously understood.

Mutually Enhanced Emission Between Metal Nanoparticle and Nanodiamond

Abstract:We demonstrate that not only plasmonic nanostructures can enhance light emission of fluorescent emitters but also the emitters can increase light emission from the plasmonic nanostructures in turn. With the help of atomic force microscope, hybrid system consisting of a fluorescent nanodiamond and a gold nanoparticle was assembled step-by-step for in-situ optical measurements. We found that the direct emission from the gold nanoparticle and nanodiamond both increased with comparison to that before coupling. The interaction of the hybrid system was understood as an entity based on the concept of quantized optical cavity by considering the nanodiamond and nanoparticle as a two-level atom and a nano-resonator separately. Tuning Gold Nanorod-Nanoparticle Hybrids into Plasmonic Fano Resonance for Dramatically Enhanced Light Emission and Transmission

Abstract:We investigate the optical response of a gold nanorod array coupled with a semicontinuous nanoparticle film. We find that, as the gold nanoparticle film is adjusted to the percolating regime, the nanorod-film hybrids are tuned into plasmonic Fano resonance, characterized by the coherent coupling of discrete plasmonic modes of the nanorod array with the continuum band of the percolating film, Consequently, optical transmission of the percolating film is substantially enhanced. Even more strikingly, electromagnetic fields around the nanorod array become much stronger, as reflected by 2 orders of magnitude enhancement in the avalanche multiphoton luminescence. These findings may prove instrumental in the design of various plasmonic nanodevices.
