Abstract:We demonstrate that the silver nanoplate-based macroscopically periodic (macro-periodic) and microscopically random (micro-random) structure has a broadband near-field enhancement as compared to conventional silver gratings. The specific field enhancement in a wide spectral range (from UV to near-infrared) originates from the abundance of localized surface-plasmonic (LSP) modes in the microscopically random distributed silver nanoplates and propagating Bloch-plasmonic (PBP) modes from the macroscopically periodic pattern. The characterization of polarization dependent spectral absorption, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), as well as theoretical simulation was conducted to comprehensively understand the features of the broadband spectrum and highly concentrated near-field. The reported macro-periodic and micro-random structure may offer a new route for the design of plasmonic systems for photonic and optoelectronic applications.
Two-scale structure for giant field enhancement: combination of Rayleigh anomaly and colloidal plasmonic resonance

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhancements from oligomers, with feature size of tens of nanometers, with a Rayleigh anomaly caused by a 1-D set of periodic nanorods, having a period on the order of the excitation wavelength, provides a mean to produce enhancement beyond that constrained by losses in near field resonances. Metallic oligomers are chemically assembled in between the periodic set of nanorods that are fabricated using lithographic methods. The nanorod periodicity is investigated to induce the Rayleigh anomaly at the oligomers plasmonic resonance wavelength to further enhance the field in the oligomers hot spots. A thorough study of this structure is carried out by using an effective analytical-numerical model which is also compared to full-wave simulation results. Experimental results comparing enhancements in surface enhanced Raman scattering measurements with and without nanorods demonstrate the effectiveness of a Rayleigh anomaly in boosting the field enhancement. The proposed structure is expected to be beneficial for many applications ranging from medical diagnostics to sensors and solar cells.

Abstract:Sub-wavelength strongly confined electromagnetic field induced by surface plasmon resonance offers a promising method to enhance the light-matter interactions, which has wide applications in the fields of enhanced spectroscopy, photovoltaic conversion, and photocatalysis. For periodic metal nanostructures, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can couple with the long-range diffractive interaction, causing a narrow linewidth. Here, we report a new family of plasmonic nanostructure fabricated through nanoimprint lithograph, which enables completely uniform, reproducible, and low-cost Au nanofinger multimer arrays with high aspect ratio at the manufacturing scale. Through adjusting the lattice spacing and the angle of incident light, the different collective coupling strengths between the diffraction modes and the LSPR of trimer or pentamer Au nanofingers arrays are observed experimentally by angle-resolved reflection spectroscopy. According to the numerical simulation based on the finite element method, the dynamic evolution of collective coupled modes is demonstrated. The typical surface charge distribution and electric field distribution of the coupled dipole resonance show a significant electromagnetic field enhancement. By adjusting the height of nanofingers, lattice spacing and gap size of adjacent nanofingers, the feasibility of the coupled modes is further investigated. This work provides an excellent candidate for the localization of light as chip-scale plasmonic devices.

Abstract:We report the enhancement of the mid-infrared (MIR) luminescence intensity in a nanoscale metal/semiconductor structure by the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with excitons in a narrow-gap semiconductor. The SPPs are efficiently excited by the total internal reflection photons at a metal/semiconductor interface. The intense electric field induced by SPPs, in turn, greatly changes the radiative recombination rates of the excitons generated by the pumping laser and thus the MIR luminescence intensity. The finding avails the understanding of fundamental science of SPs in narrow-gap semiconductors and the development of novel MIR devices. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2016
High Electric Field Enhancement Induced by Modal Coupling for a Plasmonic Dimer Array on a Metallic Film

Abstract:A giant electric field on a subwavelength scale is highly beneficial for boosting the light–matter interaction. In this paper, we investigated a hybrid structure consisting of a hemispheric dimer array and a gold film and realized resonant mode coupling of the surface lattice resonance (SLR) and surface plasmon polariton (SPP). Mode coupling is demonstrated by observing anti-crossing in reflection spectra, which corresponds to Rabi splitting. Although the resonance coupling does not enter the strong coupling regime, an improved quality factor (Q~350) and stronger electric field enhancement in the gap region of the dimer (i.e., hot spot) in our hybrid structure are obtained compared to those of the single dimer or dimer array only. Remarkably, the magnitude of electric field enhancement over 500 can be accessible. Such high field enhancement makes our hybridized structure a versatile platform for the realization of ultra-sensitive biosensing, low-threshold nanolasing, low-power nonlinear optical devices, etc.

Abstract:We study how the collective effects of nanoparticles arranged in rectangular arrays influence their temporal plasmon response and field enhancement property. By systematically changing the lattice constant for arrays containing identical metal nanorods, we experimentally demonstrate how grating induced effects affect the position and, more importantly, the broadening of extinction spectra. We correlate these effects with the achievable field enhancement and the temporal duration of plasmon transients and formulate criteria for the generation of enhanced few-cycle localized plasmon oscillations.

Abstract:Excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) of metal nanoparticles (NPs) residing on a flat metal film has attracted great attentions recently due to the enhanced electromagnetic (EM) fields found to be higher than the case of NPs on a dielectric substrate. In the present work, it is shown that even much higher enhancement of EM fields is obtained by exciting the LSPs through extended surface plasmons (ESPs) generated at the metallic film surface using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration. We show that the largest EM field enhancement and the highest surface-enhanced fluorescence intensity are obtained when the incidence angle is the ESP resonance angle of the underlying metal film. The finite-difference time-domain simulations indicate that excitation of LSPs using ESPs can generate 1-3 orders higher EM field intensity than direct excitation of the LSPs using incidence from free space. The ultrahigh enhancement is attributed to the strong confinement of the ESP waves in the vertical direction. The drastically intensified EM fields are significant for highly-sensitive refractive index sensing, surface-enhanced spectroscopies, and enhancing the efficiency of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the electromagnetic enhancement by a T-shaped nanogroove in a metallic substrate. Compared with a single bare groove without the top trench, a T-shaped groove can achieve a much higher enhancement factor of electric field by more than two times. To explain this improved field enhancement, we build up an intuitive model that explicitly incorporates the mode resonance in the central groove and the excitation and collection of surface waves by the top trench. The model can accurately reproduce the fully vectorial data and thus allows an in-depth analysis of the physics of the field enhancement. Analysis of the model shows that the resonance in the groove can be further enhanced by the excited surface waves that are collected by the top trench and further coupled into the groove. Surface plasmon polariton is shown to be not the unique surface wave that enhances the groove resonance and taking into account another so-called quasi-cylindrical wave will give the full contribution. Our results are helpful for intuitively designing field-enhancement devices that employ surface waves to further enhance the field concentration or resonance.

Abstract:Surface plasmons（SPs） generated in nano metallic gratings on medium layer can greatly enhance the transmission field through the metallic gratings. The enhancement effect is achieved from λ=500 nm to near-infrared domain. The enhancement rate is about 110% at the wavelength of about 610 nm and about 180% at λ=700 nm and 740 nm where most kinds of thin film solar cells have a high spectral response. These structures should provide a promising way to increase the coupling efficiency of thin film solar cells and optical detectors of different wavelength response.

Abstract:Local field surface plasmon excitation of pair arrays of silver nanospheres was studied using three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The near-field enhancement was associated with the radius of nanosphere and the incident wavelength, the highest of which always appeared in the penultimate gaps, regardless of the number of the pairs. The surface plasmon resonance could be controlled and tuned by radius of nanosphere and incident wavelength.

Abstract:This study investigates the enhancement and nanofocusing of a radially polarized electric field by a conical plasmonic structure (CPS). The CPS is a dielectric cone with nanometer metal cladding on a dielectric substrate. Concentric circular slanted grooves are etched on the surface of the dielectric substrate. These grooves converge the incident field on the structure. Angled periodic gratings are engraved on the CPS metal surface near the tip, creating a plasmonic momentum and contributing to the field enhancement above the apex. The symmetry of the incident radially polarized light and the structure significantly boosts nanofocusing and field enhancement. The optimal width of the nanofocusing and the electric field enhancement factor obtained are approximately 9 nm and 30000, respectively. Because of its impressive effects, this scheme is a valuable tool for plasmonic, optics, and laser applications.

Abstract:The enhancement and confinement characteristics of the local field in the two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength-size series cavities structure are investigated numerically by using the boundary integral method. The series cavities are built of two pieces of finite silver thin slabs with subwavelength corrugations on their inner boundaries, set in a face-to-face arrangement with a separating space, and the central part is a narrow channel (NC). We calculate the average amplitude of the local field in the NC as a function of the wavelength for exploring the influence of the structural parameters and demonstrate the amplitude distribution of the magnetic field in the structure and the cross-section distributions of the local field in the NC region along both the longitudinal axis direction and the transverse directions. The simulations show that the local field in the NC has significant enhancement, up to 2 orders of magnitude, of the incident light field, and the local light field is confined to a small region less than one fifth of the resonant wavelength in the longitudinal direction and one twentieth of the resonant wavelength in the lateral direction. Replacing the metallic material of the cavity walls with the semiconductor germanium leads to the complete disappearance of the enhancement of the local field. It is clearly shown that surface plasmon polaritons on the metal play a critical role for this enhancement phenomenon. The influences of various geometric parameters on the resonant wavelength and the peak value of the average amplitude of the local field are extensively investigated. Abstract:Enhancements up to four orders of magnitude for electric intensity and three orders of magnitude for magnetic intensity are realized in a novel 2D L-shaped nanocavity. This structure makes full use of the dimension confinement, cavity resonance and tip enhancement to increase the electromagnetic intensity. An impedance matching model is developed to design this cavity by regarding the cavity as a load impedance where electromagnetic fields are maximally enhanced when maximum electromagnetic energy is delivered to the load impedance. Our L-shaped nanocavity promises a variety of useful functionalities in sensing, nonlinear spectroscopy and signal processing.

Abstract:We study the impact of optical field-enhancement effects on the optoelectronic properties of metal nanoparticle arrays. Applying a focused ion beam lithography in combination with an electron beam deposition technique we can pattern electrical contacts in a way to give rise to an electromagnetic field-enhancement. A further field-enhancement is achieved by the plasmon resonance of the particles. Both effects are directly observed in the photoconductance of the arrays.
Near-field enhancement by waveguide-plasmon polaritons in a nonlocal metasurface

Abstract:Localized surface plasmons in metal nanoparticles are widely used in nano-optics to confine and enhance optical fields. It has been previously shown that, if the nanoparticles are distributed periodically, an additional enhancement can be achieved by coupling the localized surface plasmons to the diffraction orders of the lattice, forming surface lattice resonances. In this work, we study an even further improvement of the near-field enhancement by placing a metal-dielectric slab waveguide beneath the lattice of the particles to excite coupled waveguide-plasmon polaritons. These excitations can extend over many periods of the lattice, making the metasurface highly nonlocal. We numerically demonstrate that the approach can provide a significant extra increase in the near-field intensity -- by a factor of 80 over that produced by a single-particle plasmon resonance and by 7 over the lattice-resonance enhancement. The described enhancement mechanism can be used to design extraordinarily efficient nonlocal optical metasurfaces for many applications, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and solar energy harvesting.

Optically Thin Metallic Films for High-radiative-efficiency Plasmonics

Abstract:Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin metallic films as an ideal platform for high-radiative-efficiency plasmonics. For far-field scattering, adding a thin high-quality metallic substrate enables a higher quality factor while maintaining the localization and tunability that the nanoparticle provides. For near-field spontaneous emission, a thin metallic substrate, of high quality or not, greatly improves the field overlap between the emitter environment and propagating surface plasmons, enabling high-Purcell (total enhancement > $10^4$), high-quantum-yield (> 50 %) spontaneous emission, even as the gap size vanishes (3$\sim$5 nm). The enhancement has almost spatially independent efficiency and does not suffer from quenching effects that commonly exist in previous structures.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed new designs for plasmonic nanostructure and its nanofocusing, coupling, resonance, and waveguide characterizations. With in-plane Fresnel zone plates, a 15 times field enhancement was achieved for the plasmonic nanofocusing. Plasmonic antennas placed at both ends of a single nanowire, consisting of a nanooptical circuit, was successfully realized in an enhanced plasmon coupling and emission. Plasmonic Fano resonance was also observed in a single sliced Ag nanodisk with the structure symmetry breaking. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a CdS nanoribbon placed on Ag surface showed an excellent mode confinement and energy low dissipation. More potential applications based on these plasmonic configurations are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:At the zigzag edge of a magnetic photonic crystal with honeycomb lattice, the nonreciprocal surface modes (NSMs) could appear below the magnetic surface plasmon (MSP) frequency. The NSMs possess very flat slopes outside the light line, which is strikingly different from the nearly linear dispersion curve just above the MSP frequency and results in strong confinement and enhancement of the electromagnetic field. Particularly, an enhancement over 100 times in magnetic field is achieved because of the strong magnetic response arising from the MSP resonance. In addition, the branch of double-valued NSM dispersion curve provides zero group velocity away from the Brillouin zone boundary.
