Abstract:On the basis of comparing Maxwell equation for a light wave to Schrodinger equation for a photon, we conclude that the former solution that must be a real function is the real part of the latter solution that must be a complex function. Using the state-vector function that is the general solution of Schrodinger equation for a photon, we solve some true but strange optical problems including the simple demonstration of Malus's Law and the orthogonal decomposition of a natural light.

Abstract:We look at the foundations of electromagnetism in this chapter of the "eletromagnetism" book. For doing this, after some review (constraints on photon mass etc.), we use two approaches. The first one is to formulate a Parametrized Post-Maxwellian framework to include QED corrections and a pseudoscalar photon interaction. We discuss various vacuum birefringence experiments - ongoing and proposed - to measure these parameters. The second approach is to look at electromagnetism in gravity and various experiments and observations to determine its empirical foundation. We found that the foundation is solid with the only exception of a potentially possible pseudoscalar-photon interaction. We discussed its experimental constraints and look forward to more future experiments.

Abstract:A photon, according to modern quantum field theory, is a minimal change in the wave function for the electromagnetic field or, less formally, in the probability distribution for what detectors of electromagnetic radiation will sense. Here I explain that strange formulation, by building up to it through the general concept of quantum censorship. From this perspective, the resolution of blackbody radiation catastrophe has much in common with Feynman’s theory of superfluid He. The resolution, in quantum theory, of the ultraviolet catastrophe of black-body radiation theory can be viewed in various ways. Here I discuss it as a manifestation of quantum censorship – that is, lifting of energy degeneracy among classical modes through their re-organization into coherent superpositions. The difficulty of classical physics that initiated the quantum revolution was its (catastrophic) prediction of infinite energy for blackbody radiation at any non-zero temperature. The catastrophe arises because of the great abundance of high-frequency modes. In thermal equilibrium the average amplitudes for these modes are small, individually, but add up to infinite energy, contrary to observation. It is interesting to revisit that problem, in those concrete terms, in the context of modern, mature quantum theory. Of course, there is no question of deriving essentially new results for this old problem, but it can be entertaining to view things from different points of view, and it may turn out that doing so develops intuition that will prove

Abstract:We study various aspects of the Carroll limit in which the speed of light is sent to zero. A large part of this paper is devoted to the quantization of Carroll field theories. We show that these exhibit infinite degeneracies in the spectrum and may suffer from non-normalizable ground states. As a consequence, partition functions of Carroll systems are ill-defined and do not lead to sensible thermodynamics. These seemingly pathological properties might actually be a virtue in the context of flat space holography. Better defined is the Carroll $\textit{regime}$, in which we consider the leading order term in an expansion around vanishing speed of light without taking the strict Carroll limit. Such an expansion may lead to sensible notions of Carroll thermodynamics. An interesting example is a gas of massless particles with an imaginary chemical potential conjugate to the momentum. In the Carroll regime we show that the partition function of such a gas leads to an equation of state with $w=-1$. As a separate story, we study aspects of Carroll gravity and couplings to Carrollian energy-momentum tensors. We discuss many examples of solutions to Carroll gravity, including wormholes, Maxwell fields, solutions with a cosmological constant, and discuss the structure of geodesics in a Carroll geometry. The coupling of matter to Carroll gravity also allows us to derive energy-momentum tensors for hypothetical Carroll fluids from expanding relativistic fluids as well as directly from hydrostatic partition functions.

Abstract:In this paper, I introduce two new concepts (Minkowski quasi-photon and invariance of physical definitions) to elucidate the theory developed in my previous work [Can. J. Phys. 93 (2015) 1510], and to clarify the criticisms by Partanen and coworkers [Phys. Rev. A 95 (2017) 063850]. Minkowski quasi-photon is the carrier of the momentum and energy of light in a medium under the sense of macroscopic averages of light-matter microscopic interactions. I firmly argue that required by the principle of relativity, the definitions of all physical quantities are invariant. I shed a new light on the significance of the symmetry of physical laws for resolution of the Abraham–Minkowski debate on the momentum of light in a medium. I illustrate by relativistic analysis why the momentums and energies of the electromagnetic subsystem and the material subsystem form Lorentz four-vectors separately for a closed system of light-matter interactions, and why the momentum and energy of a non-radiation field are owned by the material subsystem, and they are not measurable experimentally. Finally, I also provide an elegant proof for the invariance of physical definitions, and a clear definition of the Lorentz covariance for general physical quantities and tensors.

Aether Theory and the Principle of Relativity

Abstract:This paper completes and comments on some aspects of our previous publications. In ref [1], we have derived a set of space-time transformations referred to as the extended space-time transformations. These transformations, which assume the existence of a preferred aether frame and the variability of the one-way speed of light in the other frames, are compared to the Lorentz-Poincare transformations. We demonstrate that the extended transformations can be converted into a set of equations that have a similar mathematical form to the Lorentz-Poincare transformations, but which differ from them in that they connect reference frames whose co-ordinates are altered by the systematic unavoidable measurement distortions due to length contraction and clock retardation and by the usual synchronization procedures, a fact that the conventional approaches of relativity do not show. As a result, we confirm that the relativity principle is not a fundamental principle of physics [i.e, it does not rigorously apply in the physical world when the true co-ordinates are used]. It is contingent but seems to apply provided that the distorted coordinates are used. The apparent invariance of the speed of light also results from the measurement distortions. The space-time transformations relating experimental data, therefore, conceal hidden variables which deserved to be disclosed for a deeper understanding of physics.

Abstract:Carroll symmetry arises from Poincaré symmetry upon taking the limit of vanishing speed of light. We determine the constraints on the energy-momentum tensor implied by Carroll symmetry and show that for energy-momentum tensors of perfect fluid form, these imply an equation of state E + P = 0 for energy density plus pressure. Therefore Carroll symmetry might be relevant for dark energy and inflation. In the Carroll limit, the Hubble radius goes to zero and outside it recessional velocities are naturally large compared to the speed of light. The de Sitter group of isometries, after the limit, becomes the conformal group in Euclidean flat space. We also study the Carroll limit of chaotic inflation, and show that the scalar field is naturally driven to have an equation of state with w = − 1. Finally we show that the freeze-out of scalar perturbations in the two point function at horizon crossing is a consequence of Carroll symmetry. To make the paper self-contained, we include a brief pedagogical review of Carroll symmetry, Carroll particles and Carroll field theories that contains some new material as well. In particular we show, using an expansion around speed of light going to zero, that for scalar and Maxwell type theories one can take two different Carroll limits at the level of the action. In the Maxwell case these correspond to the electric and magnetic limit. For point particles we show that there are two types of Carroll particles: those that cannot move in space and particles that cannot stand still.

A Study of the Nature of Light by Comparing Real and Digital Universes

Abstract:The nature of light is studied by comparison between the real and digital worlds. Combining the theoretical results obtained from a relative quantum mechanical equation which is suited for a particle with zero rest mass, spin quantum number 1/2 with experiments analysis results, we discuss the possibility that a photon could have structure. A possible photon model with internal structure is proposed and discussed. A photon could consist of a pair particles named particle x(+) and antiparticle x(-). x(+) and x(-) both have zero rest masses, and spin quantum number 1/2. x(+) and x(-) oscillate in opposite directions but spin in the same direction, which means there is an internal oscillation. The frequency of light is the frequency of the oscillation. The model can be used to explain not only all of the experiment phenomena, but also the wave particle dualism of light. It can provide clear pictures of both polarization and coherency of light. It can also explain that there are two spin states of 1 and -1. The possible experiments that could be used to prove the model are addressed too.
On aether terms in a space-time with a compact extra dimension

Abstract:In this paper, we explicitly calculate the aether-like corrections for the electromagnetic field in the case when the space-time involves an extra compact spatial dimension besides of usual four dimensions. Our methodology is based on an explicit summation over the Kaluza-Klein tower of fields which turns out to be no more difficult than the finite-temperature calculations. We found some new terms which can be treated as certain five-dimensional generalizations of the aether-like terms $\kappa^{mnpq}F_{mn}F_{pq}$ and $\bar{\psi}c^{mn}\gamma_m\partial_n\psi$ which in four dimensions are treated as important ingredients of the Lorentz-breaking extension of the standard model. We have shown that these new terms become to dominate in the limit where the extra dimension is very small, allowing us to suggest that there will be essential modifications of quantum corrections if our space indeed has a small extra spatial dimension. Moreover, we have shown that in the CPT-even case we have extra new particles as a consequence of the extra dimension.

David Brewster's and William Herschel's experiments on inflection that delivered the coup de gr{â}ce to Thomas Young's ether distribution hypothesis

Abstract:In his Theory of Light and Colours, presented to the Royal Society in November 1801, Thomas Young defended a mechanical explanation of the coloured fringes observed outside of the shadow of an opaque object-the so-called 'colours by inflection'-that was based on the hypothesis of an ethereal density gradient surrounding all material bodies. However, two years later, he publicly rejected that hypothesis, without giving much detail on his reasons. Now, although Geoffrey Cantor demonstrated the crucial role of mechanical and astronomical arguments in explaining the withdrawal of this fundamental hypothesis long ago, the purpose of this article is to draw deeper attention on a set of experiments performed by David Brewster on the inflection of light, described in a letter he addressed to the Royal Society in January 1802, but which kept retained in the hands of William Herschel and never reached its original destination. For the hypothesis that will be evaluated here is that these unpublished experiments of Brewster's were eventually known to Young through the mediation of William Herschel, and eventually played a significant role in his rejection of his own ether distribution hypothesis too.

Maxwell-Dirac isomorphism revisited: from foundations of quantum mechanics to geometrodynamics and cosmology

Abstract:Although electrons (fermions) and photons(bosons) produce the same interference patterns in the two-slit experiments, the description of these patterns is markedly different. Photons are spin one, relativistic and massless while electrons are spin 1/2 massive particles producing the same interference patterns. In spite of these differences, already in early 30ies of 20ieth century the isomorphism between the source-free Maxwell and Dirac equations was established. It permitted us to replace Born probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics with the optical. In 1925 Rainich combined source-free Maxwell equations with Einstein's equations for gravity. His results were rediscovered by Misner and Wheeler in their "geometrodynamics". Absence of sources in it remained a problem until Ranada's work. His results required the existence of null electromagnetic fields absent in geometrodynamics. They were added later on by Geroch. Ranada's solutions of source-free Maxwell's equations came out as knots and links. In this work new proof of knotty nature of the electron is established. The obtained result perfectly blends with the descripion of rotating and charged black hole.

Abstract:This is the first in a series of two articles, the second of which provides an exact electro-magnetic field description of photon emission, absorption, and radiation pattern. Photon energy exchanges are analyzed and shown to be the triggered, regenerative response of a non-local eigenstate electron. This first article presents a model-based, hidden variable analysis of quantum theory that provides the statistical nature of wave functions. The analysis uses the equations of classical electro-magnetism and conservation of energy while modeling an eigenstate electron as a nonlocal entity. Essential to the analysis are physical properties that were discovered and analyzed only after the historical interpretation of quantum mechanics was established: electron non-locality and the standing electro-magnetic energy that accompanies and encompasses an active, electrically small volume. The standing energy produces a driving radiation reaction force that, under certain circumstances, is many orders of magnitude larger than currently accepted values. These properties provide a sufficient basis for the Schrödinger equation as a descriptor of non-relativistic eigenstate electrons in or near equilibrium. The uncertainty principle follows, as does the exclusion principle. The analysis leads to atomic stability and causality in the sense that the status of physical phenomena at any instant specifies the status an instant later.

Abstract:Recent attempts at the construction of holography for asymptotically flat spacetime have taken two different routes. Celestial holography, involving a two dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT) dual to 4D Minkowski spacetime, has generated novel results in asymptotic symmetry and scattering amplitudes. A different formulation, using Carrollian CFTs, has been principally used to provide some evidence for flat holography in lower dimensions. Understanding of flat space scattering has been lacking in the Carroll framework. In this Letter, using ideas from Celestial holography, we show that 3D Carrollian CFTs living on the null boundary of 4D flat space can potentially compute bulk scattering amplitudes. Three-dimensional Carrollian conformal correlators have two different branches, one depending on the null time direction and one independent of it. We propose that it is the time-dependent branch that is related to bulk scattering. Abstract:We consider a class of Lorentz-violating theories of gravity involving a timelike unit vector field (the aether) coupled to a metric, two examples being Einstein-aether theory and Hořava gravity. The action always includes the Ricci scalar of the metric and the invariants quadratic in covariant derivatives of the aether, but the theories differ in how the aether is constructed from other fields, and whether those fields are varied in the action. Fields that are not varied define background structures breaking diffeomorphsim invariance, including threadings, folations, and clocks, which generally produce novel degrees of freedom arising from the violation of what would otherwise be initial value constraints. The principal aims of this paper are to survey the nature of the theories that arise, and to understand the consequences of breaking diffeomorphism invariance in this setting. In a companion paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.03305" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.03305">arXiv:1504.03305</a>], we address some of the phenomenology of the "ponderable aether" case in which the presence of a background clock endows the aether with a variable internal energy density that behaves in some respects like dark matter.
