Abstract:Quantum integrable systems and their classical counterparts are considered. We show that the symplectic structure and invariant tori of the classical system can be deformed by a quantization parameter $\hbar$ to produce a new (classical) integrable system. The new tori selected by the $\hbar$-equidistance rule represent the spectrum of the quantum system up to $O(\hbar^\infty)$ and are invariant under quantum dynamics in the long-time range $O(\hbar^{-\infty})$. The quantum diffusion over the deformed tori is described. The analytic apparatus uses quantum action-angle coordinates explicitly constructed by an $\hbar$-deformation of the classical action-angles.

Abstract:We propose in this work a concept of integrability for quantum systems, which corresponds to the concept of noncommutative integrability for systems in classical mechanics. We determine a condition for quantum operators which can be a suitable replacement for the condition of functional independence for functions on the classical phase space. This condition is based on the properties of the main parts of the operators with respect to the momenta. We are led in this way to the definition of what we call a "quasi-integrable quantum system". This concept will be further developed in a series of following papers.

Abstract:Various aspects of the theory of quantum integrable systems are reviewed. Basic ideas behind the construction of integrable ultralocal and nonultralocal quantum models are explored by exploiting the underlying algebraic structures related to the Yang-Baxter equations. Physical meaning of abstract mathematical notions like universal R-matrix, quantized algebras, Sklyanin algebra, braided algebra, Hopf algebra etc. and the role played by them in integrable systems are highlighted. Systematic construction of quantum integrable lattice as well as field models and their exact excitation spectra are presented through examples. The coordinate and algebraic formulations of the Bethe ansatz are illustrated with comparison, along with the description of nested and functional Bethe ansatzes. The techniques for deriving quantum Hamiltonians from the Lax operators are demonstrated on concrete models. The exposition of this review is kept in a fairly elementary level with emphasis on the physical contents.

Abstract:In these lecture notes we aim for a pedagogical introduction to both classical and quantum integrability. Starting from Liouville integrability and passing through Lax pair and r-matrix we discuss the construction of the conserved charges for classical integrable models taking as example the harmonic oscillator. The construction of these charges for 2D integrable field theories is also discussed using a Lax connection and the Sine-Gordon model as example. On the quantum side, the XXZ spin chain is used to explain the systematic construction of the conserved charges starting from a quantum R-matrix, solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. The diagonalization of these charges is performed using the algebraic Bethe ansatz. At the end, the interpretation of the R-matrix as an S-matrix in a scattering process is also presented. These notes were written for the lectures delivered at the school "Integrability, Dualities and Deformations", that ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually.

Abstract:Carrollian field theories have recently emerged as a candidate dual to flat space quantum gravity. We carefully quantize simple two-derivative Carrollian theories, revealing a strong sensitivity to the ultraviolet. They can be regulated upon being placed on a spatial lattice and working at finite inverse temperature. Unlike in conventional field theories, the details of the lattice-regulated Carrollian theories remain important at long distances even in the limit that the lattice spacing is sent to zero. We use that limit to define interacting continuum models with a tractable perturbative expansion. The ensuing theories are those of generalized free fields, with non-Gaussian correlations suppressed by positive powers of the lattice spacing, and an unbroken supertranslation symmetry.

Structure and Strength of Dislocation Junctions: An Atomic Level Analysis

Abstract:The quasicontinuum method is used to simulate three-dimensional Lomer-Cottrell junctions both in the absence and in the presence of an applied stress. The simulations show that this type of junction is destroyed by an unzipping mechanism in which the dislocations that form the junction are gradually pulled apart along the junction segment. The calculated critical stress needed for breaking the junction is comparable to that predicted by line tension models. The simulations also demonstrate a strong influence of the initial dislocation line directions on the breaking mechanism, an effect that is neglected in the macroscopic treatment of the hardening effect of junctions.

Abstract:Integrable probability has emerged as an active area of research at the interface of probability/mathematical physics/statistical mechanics on the one hand, and representation theory/integrable systems on the other. Informally, integrable probabilistic systems have two properties: 1) It is possible to write down concise and exact formulas for expectations of a variety of interesting observables (or functions) of the system. 2) Asymptotics of the system and associated exact formulas provide access to exact descriptions of the properties and statistics of large universality classes and universal scaling limits for disordered systems. We focus here on examples of integrable probabilistic systems related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class and explain how their integrability stems from connections with symmetric function theory and quantum integrable systems.
Quantum Thermodynamic Integrability for Foundations of Statistical Physics

Abstract:We extend the Carath´eodory principle of the Second Law to quantum thermodynamics with energy levels depending on macroscopic variables, such as volume and magnetic field. This extension introduces the concept of Quantum Thermodynamic Integrability (QTI), offering an alternative foundation for statistical mechanics. QTI is characterized by the path-independence of work and heat within the thermodynamic manifold, which is locally described by energy levels and specific thermodynamic parameters. Within this framework, temperature naturally emerges as an integrating factor, allowing for the derivation of both canonical and non-canonical distributions from the Entropy Integrable Equations (EIE) based on QTI. Notably, non-canonical states, which become particularly significant outside the thermodynamic limit, reveal the existence of informational correlations in finite-size thermodynamic systems.

Quantum Integrable Systems on a Classical Integrable Background

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the framework for quantum integrable systems on an integrable classical background. We call them hybrid quantum integrable systems (hybrid integrable systems), and we show that they occur naturally in the semiclassical limit of quantum integrable systems. We start with an outline of the concept of hybrid dynamical systems. Then we give several examples of hybrid integrable systems. The first series of examples is a class of hybrid integrable systems that appear in the semiclassical limit of quantum spin chains. Then we look at the semiclassical limit of the quantum spin Calogero--Moser system. The result is a hybrid integrable system driven by usual classical Calogero--Moser (CM) dynamics. This system at the fixed point of the multi-time classical dynamics CM system gives commuting spin Hamiltonians of Haldane--Shastry model.

Abstract:The conventional theory of hydrodynamics describes the evolution in time of chaotic many-particle systems from local to global equilibrium. In a quantum integrable system, local equilibrium is characterized by a local generalized Gibbs ensemble or equivalently a local distribution of pseudomomenta. We study time evolution from local equilibria in such models by solving a certain kinetic equation, the "Bethe-Boltzmann" equation satisfied by the local pseudomomentum density. Explicit comparison with density matrix renormalization group time evolution of a thermal expansion in the XXZ model shows that hydrodynamical predictions from smooth initial conditions can be remarkably accurate, even for small system sizes. Solutions are also obtained in the Lieb-Liniger model for free expansion into vacuum and collisions between clouds of particles, which model experiments on ultracold one-dimensional Bose gases.

Abstract:Recently, a hydrodynamic description of local equilibrium dynamics in quantum integrable systems was discovered. In the diffusionless limit, this is equivalent to a certain 'Bethe–Boltzmann' kinetic equation, which has the form of an integro-differential conservation law in D. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the sense in which the Bethe–Boltzmann equation defines an 'integrable kinetic equation'. To this end, we study a class of N dimensional systems of evolution equations that arise naturally as finite-dimensional approximations to the Bethe–Boltzmann equation. We obtain non-local Poisson brackets and Hamiltonian densities for these equations and derive an infinite family of first integrals, parameterized by N functional degrees of freedom. We find that the conserved charges arising from quantum integrability map to Casimir invariants of the hydrodynamic bracket and their group velocities map to Hamiltonian flows. Some results from the finite-dimensional setting extend to the underlying integro-differential equation, providing evidence for its integrability in the hydrodynamic sense.

Abstract:Recent developments in the theory of quantum integrable particle systems in one-dimension with inverse square interactions are reviewed. First the Yangian symmetry is introduced and the energy spectra of the related spin models are discussed. The character of the su(n)1 WZNW theory is shown to be closely related with the Rogers–Szegö polynomial. Second, the infinite dimensional representation for solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation and the reflection equation is given. Based on the representation, the Dunkl operators associated with the classical root systems are constructed. The Macdonald polynomial and its generalization are discussed in connection with the eigenstates for the trigonometric case. Finally, some results on short-range interacting systems are mentioned.

A quantum pseudo-integrable Hamiltonian impact system

Abstract:Quantization of a toy model of a pseudointegrable Hamiltonian impact system is introduced, including EBK quantization conditions, a verification of Weyl's law, the study of their wavefunctions and a study of their energy levels properties. It is demonstrated that the energy levels statistics are similar to those of pseudointegrable billiards. Yet, here, the density of wavefunctions which concentrate on projections of classical level sets to the configuration space does not disappear at large energies, suggesting that there is no equidistribution in the configuration space in the large energy limit; this is shown analytically for some limit symmetric cases and is demonstrated numerically for some nonsymmetric cases.

Towards Carrollian quantization: renormalization of Carrollian electrodynamics

Abstract:Field-theoretic description of Carrollian theories has largely remained classical so far. In this paper, we attempt to study the renormalization of Carrollian gauge field theories via path integral techniques. The case of Carrollian electrodynamics minimally coupled to a massive Carrollian scalar is considered. We report potential problems such as IR divergences and mass shell singularity cropping up at the first order in the perturbation. Perhaps, the most important result that we report is how conventional arguments for gauge independence for mass and coupling are invalidated for a gauge theory in a Carrollian setting. As of now, the renormalization of Carrollian gauge field theories seems to suffer from unphysical ramifications. Possible cures to resolve these issues are suggested.

Abstract:Some quantum integrable finite-dimensional systems related to Lie algebras are considered. This review continues the previous review of the same authors [83] devoted to the classical aspects of these systems. The dynamics of some of these systems is closely related to free motion in symmetric spaces. Using this connection with the theory of symmetric spaces some results such as the forms of spectra, wave functions, S-matrices, quantum integrals of motion are derived. In specific cases the considered systems describe the one-dimensional n-body systems interacting pairwise via potentials g2 v(q) of the following 5 types: vI(q) = q−2, vII(q) = sinh−2 q, vIII(q) = sin−2 q, vIV(q) = P(q), vV(q) = q−2 + ω2q2. Here P(q) is the Weierstrass function, so that the first three cases are merely subcases of the fourth. The system characterized by the Toda nearest-neighbour potential exp(qjqj+ 1) is moreover considered.This review presents from a general and universal point of view results obtained mainly over the past fifteen years. Besides, it contains some new results both of physical and mathematical interest.
From classical to quantum models: the regularising role of integrals, symmetry and probabilities

Abstract:In physics, one is often misled in thinking that the mathematical model of a system is part of or is that system itself. Think of expressions commonly used in physics like "point" particle, motion "on the line", "smooth" observables, wave function, and even "going to infinity", without forgetting perplexing phrases like "classical world" versus "quantum world".... On the other hand, when a mathematical model becomes really inoperative with regard to correct predictions, one is forced to replace it with a new one. It is precisely what happened with the emergence of quantum physics. Classical models were (progressively) superseded by quantum ones through quantization prescriptions. These procedures appear often as ad hoc recipes. In the present paper, well defined quantizations, based on integral calculus and Weyl-Heisenberg symmetry, are described in simple terms through one of the most basic examples of mechanics. Starting from (quasi-) probability distribution(s) on the Euclidean plane viewed as the phase space for the motion of a point particle on the line, i.e., its classical model, we will show how to build corresponding quantum model(s) and associated probabilities (e.g. Husimi) or quasi-probabilities (e.g. Wigner) distributions. We highlight the regularizing role of such procedures with the familiar example of the motion of a particle with a variable mass and submitted to a step potential.
