Abstract:The nature of light is studied by comparison between the real and digital worlds. Combining the theoretical results obtained from a relative quantum mechanical equation which is suited for a particle with zero rest mass, spin quantum number 1/2 with experiments analysis results, we discuss the possibility that a photon could have structure. A possible photon model with internal structure is proposed and discussed. A photon could consist of a pair particles named particle x(+) and antiparticle x(-). x(+) and x(-) both have zero rest masses, and spin quantum number 1/2. x(+) and x(-) oscillate in opposite directions but spin in the same direction, which means there is an internal oscillation. The frequency of light is the frequency of the oscillation. The model can be used to explain not only all of the experiment phenomena, but also the wave particle dualism of light. It can provide clear pictures of both polarization and coherency of light. It can also explain that there are two spin states of 1 and -1. The possible experiments that could be used to prove the model are addressed too.

Abstract:This chapter derives the properties of light from the properties of processing, including its ability to be both a wave and a particle, to respond to objects it doesn't physically touch, to take all paths to a destination, to choose a route after it arrives, and to spin both ways at once as it moves. Here a photon is an entity program spreading as a processing wave of instances. It becomes a "particle" if any part of it overloads the grid network that runs it, causing the photon program to reboot and restart at a new node. The "collapse of the wave function" is how quantum processing creates what we call a physical photon. This informational approach gives insights into issues like the law of least action, entanglement, superposition, counterfactuals, the holographic principle and the measurement problem. The conceptual cost is that physical reality is a quantum processing output, i.e. virtual.

Artificial light and quantum order in systems of screened dipoles

Abstract:The origin of light is a unsolved mystery in nature. Recently, it was suggested that light may originate from a new kind of order - quantum order. To test this idea in experiments, we study systems of screened magnetic/electric dipoles in 2D and 3D lattices. We show that our models contain an artificial light -- a photon-like collective excitation. We discuss how to design realistic devices that realize our models. We show that the ``speed of light'' and the ``fine structure constant'' of the artificial light can be tuned in our models. The properties of artificial atoms (bound states of pairs of artificial charges) are also discussed. The existence of artificial light (as well as artificial electron) in condensed matter systems suggests that elementary particles, such as light and electron, may not be elementary. They may be collective excitations of quantum order in our vacuum. Our models further suggest that a gauge theory is a string-net theory in disguise. Light is a fluctuation of nets of large closed strings and charge is the end of open strings.

Abstract:This is a brief history of photons, both soft and hard, real and virtual. About 150-100 years ago, Maxwell and Einstein discovered intriguing properties of electromagnetic fields and how to understand them both macroscopically and microscopically. Decades later, physicists developed the theory of renormalized quantum electrodynamics (QED), an incredibly accurate theory describing interactions of photons and other particles. Photons are used everywhere in academia and technological devices, from supermarket lasers and doors to academic studies in atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. In this article, I attempt to convey how the field of relativistic heavy ions rediscovered ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC) as a source of intense, almost real photons, and how it permits the study of a plethora of phenomena in the aforementioned academic fields. These phenomena are not always accessible by other means.

Abstract:The written version of my lecture is a personal reflection on decades of research on electron-light interactions, culminating in their control and observation in real time at the turn of the millennium. Electrons and light attracted my attention when attending the lectures of György Marx on quantum mechanics and Károly Simonyi on electrodynamics during the 1980s in Budapest. This interest was solidified by my mentor, Arnold Schmidt, and deepened by Paul Corkum, during the 1990s in Vienna. They have influenced my path most profoundly. It has been a tremendous privilege to stand on the shoulders of scientists, including many Nobel laureates, who made seminal contributions to our understanding of electrons and light, when walking the path to exploring sub-atomic motions. Light-Light scattering in Very Special Relativity Quantum Electrodynamics and Cosmic Anisotropies

Abstract:We consider scattering of light by light in Very Special Relativity (VSR) Quantum Electrodynamics(QED) with a non-zero photon mass. In order to preserve gauge invariance and Sim(2) symmetry we made use of a recently introduced infrared regularization of VSR theories. Additionally we show that all one loop diagrams with any number of photon external legs and zero fermion legs reduce to the standard QED result with the effective electron mass, as required by unitarity. It follows that the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian is the same as in QED. The total cross section of scattering of light by light exhibits tiny anisotropies that could be detected at cosmological scales. In particular they should be looked at the Cosmic Microwave Background(CMB) Radiation for low photon frequencies.

Abstract:We review the literature on possible violations of the superposition principle for electromagnetic fields in vacuum from the earliest studies until the emergence of renormalized QED at the end of the 1940's. The exposition covers experimental work on photon-photon scattering and the propagation of light in external electromagnetic fields and relevant theoretical work on nonlinear electrodynamic theories (Born-Infeld theory and QED) until the year 1949. To enrich the picture, pieces of reminiscences from a number of (theoretical) physicists on their work in this field are collected and included or appended.

Abstract:Abstract Photon sciences and technologies establish the building blocks for myriad scientific and engineering frontiers in life and energy sciences. Because of their overarching functionality, the developmental roadmap and opportunities underpinned by photonics are often semiotically mediated by the delineation of subject areas of application. In this perspective article, we map current and emerging linkages between three intersecting areas of research stewarded by advanced photonics technologies, namely light by design, outlined as (a) quantum and structured photonics, (b) light–matter interactions in accelerators and accelerator-based light sources, and (c) ultrafast sciences and quantum molecular dynamics. In each section, we will concentrate on state-of-the-art achievements and present prospective applications in life sciences, biochemistry, quantum optics and information sciences, and environmental and chemical engineering, all founded on a broad range of photon sources and methodologies. We hope that this interconnected mapping of challenges and opportunities seeds new concepts, theory, and experiments in the advancement of ultrafast photon sciences and light–matter interactions. Through this mapping, we hope to inspire a critically interdisciplinary approach to the science and applications of light by design.

Abstract:This special issue of the European Journal of Physics: Special Topics entitled Topics in Light Quark Physics collects 8 papers with the intention to discuss problems in physical processes involving the particles (mesons and baryons) comprising the lighter part in the spectrum of strong interactions, though some connections to the heavy-quark sector are also discussed. Active and timely problems in this broad field are introduced and covered by experts who root their contributions in the known aspects at the same time that take us to the frontier of knowledge, while introducing in many instances new techniques for present and future further developments. The nature of the lightest scalar resonances, the hunt for the lightest glueballs, the <span class="mathjax-tex">\(\Lambda (1405)\)</span> as a paradigmatic example of two-pole resonances, the pion–nucleon sigma term, two- and three-body scattering amplitudes extracted from lattice QCD, the QCD phase diagram, extrapolations in the number of colors of QCD and their use for addressing properties of its spectrum, and new advances to reach renormalized scattering amplitudes with attractive/repulsive singular potentials are all items covered here.

Abstract:The double-slit experiment has become a classic thought experiment for its clarity in expressing the central puzzle of quantum mechanics-wave-particle complementarity. Such wave-particle duality continues to be challenged and investigated in a broad range of entities with electrons, neutrons, helium atoms, C-60 fullerenes, Bose-Einstein condensates, and biological molecules. In this Rapid Communication, we present a double-slit scenario at Fermi scale with new entities-coherent photon products in heavy-ion collisions. Virtual photons from the electromagnetic fields of relativistic heavy ions can fluctuate to quark-antiquark pairs, scatter off a target nucleus, and emerge as vector mesons. The two colliding nuclei can take turns to act as targets, forming a double-slit interference pattern. Furthermore, the "which-way" information can be partially solved using sufficiently-high multiplicity heavy-ion collisions so that the reaction plane can be determined, which demonstrates the complementary principle, a key concept of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Dark matter, proposed decades ago as a speculative component of the universe, is now known to be the vital ingredient in the cosmos, eight times more abundant than ordinary matter, one quarter of the total energy density and the component which has controlled the growth of structure in the universe. Its nature remains a mystery, but, assuming it is comprised of weakly interacting sub-atomic particles, is consistent with large scale cosmic structure. However, recent analyses of structure on galactic and sub-galactic scales have suggested discrepancies and stimulated numerous alternative proposals. We discuss how studies of the density, demography, history and environment of smaller scale structures may distinguish among these possibilities and shed new light on the nature of dark matter.

Abstract:"Dark Photons", light new vector particles V kinetically mixed with the photon, are a frequently considered extension of the Standard Model. For masses below 10 keV they are emitted from the solar interior. In the limit of small mass m_V the dark photon flux is strongly peaked at low energies and we demonstrate that the constraint on the atomic ionization rate imposed by the results of the XENON10 Dark Matter experiment sets the to-date most stringent limit on the kinetic mixing parameter of this model: κ*m_V < 3*10^-12 eV. The result significantly improves previous experimental bounds and surpasses even the most stringent astrophysical and cosmological limits in a seven-decade-wide interval of m_V.

Abstract:This study highlights a previously unnoticed peculiarity of the relativistic Doppler effect, which arises when considering the indistinguishability of photons that are identical in one reference frame but differ across others. To address this issue, the Light Intrinsic Frame of Reference (LIFOR) is proposed, defined as a specific frame where a photon is observed with its intrinsic properties, including a specific wavelength, period, and energy-equivalent-mass. The proposed theory maintains the constancy of the speed of light, aligns fully with special relativity, and explains frequency shifts via Lorentz transformations. Additionally, it provides a relativistic interpretation for Planck’s radiation energy quantization, and enables experimental quantification of photons' intrinsic properties.

Abstract:The metaphor between physical light and inner light has a long history that permeates diverse languages and cultures. This paper outlines a system for using basic principles from optics to visually represent psychological states and processes such as ideation, enlightenment, mindfulness, and fragmentation versus integrity, as well as situations that occur between people involving phenomena such as honest versus deceptive communication, and understanding versus misunderstanding. The paper summarizes two ongoing projects based on this system: The Light and Enlightenment art installation project, and the Soultracker virtual reality project. These projects enable people to depict their inner lives and external worlds including situations and relationships with others, both as they are and as they could be, and explore alternative paths for navigating challenges and living to their fullest potential. The projects aim to be of clinical value as therapeutic tools, as well as of pedagogical value by providing a concrete language for depicting aspects of human nature that can otherwise seem elusive and intangible.
