Abstract:Basing on two approaches, we survey the results about convergence rates in the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem. The first approach concerns almost everywhere pointwise estimates of ergodic averages, whereas the second relies upon the estimates of the measures of maximal deviations.

Abstract:We firstly construct generalized Baskakov operators Vn,α,q(f;x) and their truncated sum Bn,α,q(f;γn,x). Secondly, we study the pointwise convergence and the uniform convergence of the operators Vn,α,q(f;x), respectively, and estimate that the rate of convergence by the operators Vn,α,q(f;x) is 1/nq/2. Finally, we study the convergence by the truncated operators Bn,α,q(f;γn,x) and state that the finite truncated sum Bn,α,q(f;γn,x) can replace the operators Vn,α,q(f;x) in the computational point of view provided that limn→∞nγn=∞.

Abstract:We study the almost sure convergence of bilateral ergodic averages for not necessarily integrable functions and relate it to the ones of the forward and backward averages, hence complementing results of Woś and the second named author. In the case of convergence, using results of Furstenberg on double recurrence, we prove oscillations of the bilateral ergodic averages around the limit.

Abstract:We show that the power-law decay exponents in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem (for discrete systems) are the pointwise scaling exponents of a spectral measure at the spectral value~$1$. In this work we also prove that, under an assumption of weak convergence, in the absence of a spectral gap, the convergence rates of the time-average in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem depend on sequences of time going to infinity.

Abstract:Abstract A sequence ( s n ) of integers is good for the mean ergodic theorem if for each invertible measure-preserving system ( X ,B, μ , T ) and any bounded measurable function f , the averages (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f ( T s n x ) converge in the L 2 ( μ ) norm. We construct a sequence ( s n ) which is good for the mean ergodic theorem but such that the sequence ( s 2 n ) is not. Furthermore, we show that for any set of bad exponents B , there is a sequence ( s n ) where ( s k n ) is good for the mean ergodic theorem exactly when k is not in B . We then extend this result to multiple ergodic averages of the form (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f 1 ( T s n x ) f 2 ( T 2 s n x )⋯ f l ( T ls n x ). We also prove a similar result for pointwise convergence of single ergodic averages.

Abstract:In this paper, we improve known results on the convergence rates of spectral distributions of large-dimensional sample covariance matrices of size p × n. Using the Stieltjes transform, we first prove that the expected spectral distribution converges to the limiting Marcenko--Pastur distribution with the dimension sample size ratio y=yn=p/n at a rate of O(n- 1/2) if y keeps away from 0 and 1, under the assumption that the entries have a finite eighth moment. Furthermore, the rates for both the convergence in probability and the almost sure convergence are shown to be Op(n-2/5) and oa.s.(n-2/5+\eta), respectively, when y is away from 1. It is interesting that the rate in all senses is O(n-1/8) when y is close to 1.

Abstract:Let $(X,\mu)$ be an arbitrary measure space equipped with a family of pairwise commuting measure preserving transformations $T_1, \dotsc, T_m$. We prove that the ergodic averages \[ A_{N;X}^{P_1, \dotsc, P_m}f = \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N T_1^{\lfloor P_1(n) \rfloor} \dotsm T_m^{\lfloor P_m(n) \rfloor} f \] converge pointwise $\mu$-almost everywhere as $N \to \infty$ for any $f \in L^p(X)$ with $p>1$, where $P_1, \dotsc, P_m$ are Hardy field functions which are "non-polynomial" and have distinct growth rates. To establish pointwise convergence we will prove a long-variational inequality, which will in turn prove that a maximal inequality holds for our averages. Additionally, by restricting the class of Hardy field functions to those with the same growth rate as $t^c$ for $c>0$ non-integer, we also prove full variational estimates. We are therefore able to provide quantitative bounds on the rate of convergence of exponential sums of the form \[ \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N e(\xi_1 \lfloor n^{c_1} \rfloor + \dotsb + \lfloor n^{c_m} \rfloor) \] where $0<c_1<\dotsb<c_m$ are non-integer.

Abstract:Given a probability space $(X,\mu)$, a square integrable function $f$ on such space and a (unilateral or bilateral) shift operator $T$, we prove under suitable assumptions that the ergodic means $N^{-1}\sum_{n=0}^{N-1} T^nf$ converge pointwise almost everywhere to zero with a speed of convergence which, up to a small logarithmic transgression, is essentially of the order of $N^{-1/2}$. We also provide a few applications of our results, especially in the case of shifts associated with toral endomorphisms.

Abstract:The data processing inequality is central to information theory and motivates the study of monotonic divergences. However, it is not clear operationally we need to consider all such divergences. We establish a simple method for Pinsker inequalities as well as general bounds in terms of $\chi^{2}$-divergences for twice-differentiable $f$-divergences. These tools imply new relations for input-dependent contraction coefficients. We use these relations to show for many $f$-divergences the rate of contraction of a time homogeneous Markov chain is characterized by the input-dependent contraction coefficient of the $\chi^{2}$-divergence. This is efficient to compute and the fastest it could converge for a class of divergences. We show similar ideas hold for mixing times. Moreover, we extend these results to the Petz $f$-divergences in quantum information theory, albeit without any guarantee of efficient computation. These tools may have applications in other settings where iterative data processing is relevant.

Abstract:For a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^m$, we have two indexes given under simple parameters of the set $K$ (these parameters go back to Besicovitch and Taylor in the late 50's). In the present paper we prove that with the exception of a single extreme value for each index, we have the following elementary estimate on how fast the ratio in the strong density theorem of Saks will tend to one \[ \frac{|R\cap K|}{|R|}>1-o\bigg(\frac{1}{|\log d(R)|}\bigg) \qquad \text{for a.e.} \ \ x\in K \ \ \text{and for} \ \ d(R)\to 0 \] (provided $x\in R$, where $R$ is an interval in $\mathbb{R}^m$, $d$ stands for the diameter and $|\cdot|$ is the Lebesgue measure). This work is a natural sequence of [3] and constitutes a contribution to Problem 146 of Ulam [5, p. 245] (see also [8, p.78]) and Erdös' Scottish Book `Problems' [5, Chapter 4, pp. 27-33], since it is known that no general statement can be made on how fast the density will tend to one.

Abstract:Given a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $\tau$, we prove that the spaces $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$ and $\mathcal R_\tau$ are complete with respect to pointwise, almost uniform and bilaterally almost uniform, convergences in $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$. Then we show that the pointwise Cauchy property for a special class of nets of linear operators in the space $L^1(\mathcal M,\tau)$ can be extended to pointwise convergence of such nets in any fully symmetric space $E\subset\mathcal R_\tau$, in particular, in any space $L^p(\mathcal M,\tau)$, $1\leq p<\infty$. Some applications of these results in the noncommutative ergodic theory are discussed.

Abstract:Convergence rate to the stationary distribution for continuous-time Markov processes can be studied using Lyapunov functions. Recent work by the author provided explicit rates of convergence in special case of a reflected jump-diffusion on a half-line. These results are proved for total variation distance and its generalizations: measure distances defined by test functions regardless of their continuity. Here we prove similar results for Wasserstein distance, convergence in which is related to convergence for continuou test functions. In some cases, including the reflected Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, we get faster exponential convergence rates for Wasserstein distance than for total variation distance.

Non-convergence of some non-commuting double ergodic averages

Abstract:Let $S$ and $T$ be measure-preserving transformations of a probability space $(X,{\mathcal B},\mu)$. Let $f$ be a bounded measurable functions, and consider the integrals of the corresponding `double' ergodic averages: \[\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=0}^{n-1} \int f(S^ix)f(T^ix)\ d\mu(x) \qquad (n\ge 1).\] We construct examples for which these integrals do not converge as $n\to\infty$. These include examples in which $S$ and $T$ are rigid, and hence have entropy zero, answering a question of Frantzikinakis and Host. Our proof begins with a corresponding construction for orthogonal operators on a Hilbert space, and then obtains transformations of a Gaussian measure space from them.

Abstract:A sharp, distribution free, non-asymptotic result is proved for the concentration of a random function around the mean function, when the randomization is generated by a finite sequence of independent data and the random functions satisfy uniform bounded variation assumptions. The specific motivation for the work comes from the need for inference on the distributional impacts of social policy intervention. However, the family of randomized functions that we study is broad enough to cover wide-ranging applications. For example, we provide a Kolmogorov-Smirnov like test for randomized functions that are almost surely Lipschitz continuous, and novel tools for inference with heterogeneous treatment effects. A Dvoretzky-Kiefer-Wolfowitz like inequality is also provided for the sum of almost surely monotone random functions, extending the famous non-asymptotic work of Massart for empirical cumulative distribution functions generated by i.i.d. data, to settings without micro-clusters proposed by Canay, Santos, and Shaikh. We illustrate the relevance of our theoretical results for applied work via empirical applications. Notably, the proof of our main concentration result relies on a novel stochastic rendition of the fundamental result of Debreu, generally dubbed the "gap lemma," that transforms discontinuous utility representations of preorders into continuous utility representations, and on an envelope theorem of an infinite dimensional optimisation problem that we carefully construct.
