Abstract:We explore a duality between von-Neumann's mean ergodic theorem in von-Neumann algebra and Birkhoff's mean ergodic theorem in the pre-dual Banach space of von-Neumann algebras. Besides improving known mean ergodic theorems on von-Neumann algebras, we prove Birkhoff's mean ergodic theorem for any locally compact second countable amenable group action on the pre-dual Banach space.

Abstract:Recent results concerning the linear dynamics and mean ergodicity of compact operators in Banach spaces, together with additional new results, are employed to investigate various spectral properties of generalized Cesàro operators acting in large classes of classical BK-sequence spaces. Of particular interest is to determine the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of such operators and to decide whether (or not) the operators are power bounded, mean ergodic and supercyclic.

Abstract:We study the almost sure convergence of bilateral ergodic averages for not necessarily integrable functions and relate it to the ones of the forward and backward averages, hence complementing results of Woś and the second named author. In the case of convergence, using results of Furstenberg on double recurrence, we prove oscillations of the bilateral ergodic averages around the limit.

Abstract:Convergence of the differences between operator norm and spectral radius, operator norm and numerical radius, numerical radius and spectral radius, operator norm and Crawford number, operator norm and subspectral radius of complex Hilbert space operator sequences (which are uniformly convergent) has been investigated. Also, an inequality for the difference of Crawford numbers of two linear bounded operators A and B has been obtained. Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space that does not contain any copy of $\ell^1$ and $\A$ be a non commutative $C^*$-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from $\A$ into $E^*$ is compact, thus answering a question of Pe\l czynski. As application, we show that if $G$ is a compact metrizable abelian group and $\Lambda$ is a Riesz subset of its dual then every countably additive $\A^*$-valued measure with bounded variation and whose Fourier transform is supported by $\Lambda$ has relatively compact range. Extensions of the same result to symmetric spaces of measurable operators are also presented.

Abstract:Generalized Cesàro operators $C_t$, for $t\in [0,1)$, are investigated when they act on the disc algebra $A(\mathbb{D})$ and on the Hardy spaces $H^p$, for $1\leq p \leq \infty$. We study the continuity, compactness, spectrum and point spectrum of $C_t$ as well as their linear dynamics and mean ergodicity on these spaces.

Abstract:We study minimizers of the Allen-Cahn system. We consider the $ \varepsilon $-energy functional with Dirichlet values and we establish the $ \Gamma $-limit. The minimizers of the limiting functional are closely related to minimizing partitions of the domain. Finally, utilizing that the triod and the straight line are the only minimal cones in the plane together with regularity results for minimal curves, we determine the precise structure of the minimizers of the limiting functional, and thus the limit of minimizers of the $ \varepsilon $-energy functional as $ \varepsilon \rightarrow 0 $.

Abstract:C*-algebras are widely used in mathematical physics to represent the observables of physical systems, and are sometimes taken as the starting point for rigorous formulations of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, in many cases the naive choice of an algebra of observables does not admit a C*-algebra structure, and some massaging is necessary. In this paper we investigate what properties of C*-algebras carry over to more general algebras and what modifications of the Gelfand theory of normed algebras are necessary. We use category theory as a guide and, by replacing the ordinary definition of the Gelfand spectrum with a manifestly functorial definition, we succeed in generalizing the Gelfand-Naimark theorem to locally convex *-algebras. We also recall a little-known but potentially very useful generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to completely regular, Hausdorff spaces.

Abstract:Abstract A sequence ( s n ) of integers is good for the mean ergodic theorem if for each invertible measure-preserving system ( X ,B, μ , T ) and any bounded measurable function f , the averages (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f ( T s n x ) converge in the L 2 ( μ ) norm. We construct a sequence ( s n ) which is good for the mean ergodic theorem but such that the sequence ( s 2 n ) is not. Furthermore, we show that for any set of bad exponents B , there is a sequence ( s n ) where ( s k n ) is good for the mean ergodic theorem exactly when k is not in B . We then extend this result to multiple ergodic averages of the form (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f 1 ( T s n x ) f 2 ( T 2 s n x )⋯ f l ( T ls n x ). We also prove a similar result for pointwise convergence of single ergodic averages.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the quantitative mean ergodic theorems for two subclasses of power bounded operators on a fixed noncommutative L p space with 1 < p < ∞ , which mainly concerns power bounded invertible operators and Lamperti contractions. Our approach to the quantitative ergodic theorems relies on noncommutative square function inequalities. The establishment of the latter involves several new ingredients such as the almost orthogonality and Calderón-Zygmund arguments for non-smooth kernels from semi-commutative harmonic analysis, the extension properties of the operators under consideration from operator theory, and a noncommutative version of the classical transference method due to Coifman and Weiss.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:Given a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $\tau$, we prove that the spaces $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$ and $\mathcal R_\tau$ are complete with respect to pointwise, almost uniform and bilaterally almost uniform, convergences in $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$. Then we show that the pointwise Cauchy property for a special class of nets of linear operators in the space $L^1(\mathcal M,\tau)$ can be extended to pointwise convergence of such nets in any fully symmetric space $E\subset\mathcal R_\tau$, in particular, in any space $L^p(\mathcal M,\tau)$, $1\leq p<\infty$. Some applications of these results in the noncommutative ergodic theory are discussed.

Abstract:We review and provide simplified proofs related to the Magnus expansion, and improve convergence estimates. Observations and improvements concerning the Baker--Campbell--Hausdorff expansion are also made. In this Part IE, we consider the case of finite dimensional Banach algebras. We show that Magnus expansion is convergent (and works in logarithmic sense) if the cumulative norm $< 2+\varepsilon_{n}$, where $\varepsilon_{n}$ is a positive number depending on the dimension $n$ of the Banach algebra. We also show concrete finite-dimensional counterexamples of multiple Baker--Campbell--Hausdorff type for any cumulative norm $>2$ (necessarily of possibly great dimension).

Abstract:We examine the question of whether the Calkin algebra of a Banach space must have a unique complete algebra norm. We present a survey of known results, and make the observation that a recent Banach space construction of Argyros and Motakis (preprint, 2015) provides the first negative answer. The parallel question for the weak Calkin algebra also has a negative answer; we demonstrate this using a Banach space of Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989).
