Abstract:We show uniform convergence of Wiener-Wintner ergodic averages for ergodic actions of (not necessarily countable) locally compact, second countable, abelian (LCA) groups. As a by-product, we obtain a finitary version of the van der Corput inequality for such groups.

Abstract:Given a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $\tau$, we prove that the spaces $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$ and $\mathcal R_\tau$ are complete with respect to pointwise, almost uniform and bilaterally almost uniform, convergences in $L^0(\mathcal M,\tau)$. Then we show that the pointwise Cauchy property for a special class of nets of linear operators in the space $L^1(\mathcal M,\tau)$ can be extended to pointwise convergence of such nets in any fully symmetric space $E\subset\mathcal R_\tau$, in particular, in any space $L^p(\mathcal M,\tau)$, $1\leq p<\infty$. Some applications of these results in the noncommutative ergodic theory are discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we obtain a version of the noncommutative Banach Principle suitable to prove Wiener-Wintner type results for weights in W1-space. This is used to obtain noncommutative Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorems for various types of weights for certain types of positive Dunford-Schwartz operators. We also study the b.a.u. Abstract:Let $(X,\mu)$ be an arbitrary measure space equipped with a family of pairwise commuting measure preserving transformations $T_1, \dotsc, T_m$. We prove that the ergodic averages \[ A_{N;X}^{P_1, \dotsc, P_m}f = \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N T_1^{\lfloor P_1(n) \rfloor} \dotsm T_m^{\lfloor P_m(n) \rfloor} f \] converge pointwise $\mu$-almost everywhere as $N \to \infty$ for any $f \in L^p(X)$ with $p>1$, where $P_1, \dotsc, P_m$ are Hardy field functions which are "non-polynomial" and have distinct growth rates. To establish pointwise convergence we will prove a long-variational inequality, which will in turn prove that a maximal inequality holds for our averages. Additionally, by restricting the class of Hardy field functions to those with the same growth rate as $t^c$ for $c>0$ non-integer, we also prove full variational estimates. We are therefore able to provide quantitative bounds on the rate of convergence of exponential sums of the form \[ \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N e(\xi_1 \lfloor n^{c_1} \rfloor + \dotsb + \lfloor n^{c_m} \rfloor) \] where $0<c_1<\dotsb<c_m$ are non-integer.

Abstract: The well-known Jewett-Krieger's Theorem states that each ergodic system has a strictly ergodic model. Strengthening the model by requiring that it is strictly ergodic under some group actions, and building the connection of the new model with the convergence of pointwise non-conventional ergodic averages we prove that for an ergodic system $(X,\X,\mu, T)$, $d\in\N$, $f_1, \ldots, f_d \in L^{\infty}(\mu)$, %and any tempered F{\rm ${\o}$}lner sequence $F_n$ of $\Z^2$, the averages \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{(n,m)\in F_N} f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^{n+m}x)\ldots f_d(T^{n+(d-1)m}x) \end{equation*} converge $\mu$ a.e. Abstract:We study the almost sure convergence of bilateral ergodic averages for not necessarily integrable functions and relate it to the ones of the forward and backward averages, hence complementing results of Woś and the second named author. In the case of convergence, using results of Furstenberg on double recurrence, we prove oscillations of the bilateral ergodic averages around the limit.

Abstract:A joint measure-preserving system is $(X, \mathcal{B}, \mu_{1}, \dots, \mu_{k}, T_{1}, \dots, T_{k})$, where each $(X, \mathcal{B}, \mu_{i}, T_{i})$ is a measure-preserving system and any $\mu_{i}$ and $\mu_{j}$ are mutually absolutely continuous probability measures. Such a system is called pointwise jointly ergodic if, for any set of bounded measurable functions $f_{1}, \dots, f_{k}$ on $X$, the multilinear ergodic average of their joint action under the transformations $T_{1}, \dots, T_{k}$ converges almost everywhere to the product of their integrals with respect to the corresponding measures. In this paper, we extend the classical Wiener-Wintner ergodic theorem to the setting of pointwise jointly ergodic systems with nilsequences weight. Additionally, we provide applications that include results on the mean convergence of weighted ergodic averages and the almost everywhere convergence of ergodic averages taken along subsequences of the form $\lfloor \alpha n \rfloor$, where $\alpha \geq 1$.

Variational Estimates for Bilinear Ergodic Averages Along Sublinear Sequences

Abstract:We prove long variational estimates for the bilinear ergodic averages \[ A_{N;X}(f,g)(x) = \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N f(T^{\lfloor \sqrt{n} \rfloor}x) g(T^nx) \] on an arbitrary measure preserving system $(X,\mu,T)$ for the full expected range, i.e. whenever $f \in L^{p_1}(X)$ and $g \in L^{p_2}(X)$ with $1<p_1,p_2<\infty$. In particular, if $\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}$ we show that the long $r$-variation of $A_{N;X}$ maps $L^{p_1}(X) \times L^{p_2}(X)$ into $L^p(X)$ for any $p>\frac{1}{2}$, which is sharp up to the endpoint. If $p \geq 1$ we obtain long variational estimates for the full expected range $r>2$ and if $p<1$ we obtain a range of $r>2+\varepsilon_{p_1,p_2}$ where $\varepsilon_{p_1,p_2}>0$ depends only on $p_1$ and $p_2$. As a consequence, we obtain bilinear maximal estimates \[ \left\| \sup_{N \in \mathbb{N}} |A_{N;X}(f,g)| \right\|_{L^p(X)} \leq C_{p_1,p_2} \|f\|_{L^{p_1}(X)} \|g\|_{L^{p_2}(X)} \] for any $1<p_1,p_2 \leq \infty$.

Abstract:We prove a pointwise convergence result for additive ergodic averages associated with certain multiplicative actions of the Gaussian integers. We derive several applications in dynamics and number theory, including: (i) Wirsing's theorem for Gaussian integers: if $f\colon \mathbb{G} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a bounded completely multiplicative function, then the following limit exists: $$\lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{1 \leq m, n \leq N} f(m + {\rm i} n).$$ (ii) An answer to a special case of a question of Frantzikinakis and Host: for any completely multiplicative real-valued function $f: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{R}$, the following limit exists: $$\lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{1 \leq m, n \leq N} f(m^2 + n^2).$$ (iii) A variant of a theorem of Bergelson and Richter on ergodic averages along the $\Omega$ function: if $(X,T)$ is a uniquely ergodic system with unique invariant measure $\mu$, then for any $x\in X$ and $f\in C(X)$, $$\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N^2}\sum_{1 \leq m, n \leq N} f(T^{\Omega(m^2 + n^2)}x)=\int_Xf \ d\mu.$$

Abstract:Abstract A sequence ( s n ) of integers is good for the mean ergodic theorem if for each invertible measure-preserving system ( X ,B, μ , T ) and any bounded measurable function f , the averages (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f ( T s n x ) converge in the L 2 ( μ ) norm. We construct a sequence ( s n ) which is good for the mean ergodic theorem but such that the sequence ( s 2 n ) is not. Furthermore, we show that for any set of bad exponents B , there is a sequence ( s n ) where ( s k n ) is good for the mean ergodic theorem exactly when k is not in B . We then extend this result to multiple ergodic averages of the form (1/ N )∑ N n =1 f 1 ( T s n x ) f 2 ( T 2 s n x )⋯ f l ( T ls n x ). We also prove a similar result for pointwise convergence of single ergodic averages.

Convergence of noncommutative spherical averages for actions of free groups

Abstract:In this article, we extend the Bufetov pointwise ergodic theorem for spherical averages of even radius for free group actions on noncommutative $L\log L$-space. Indeed, we extend it to more general Orlicz space $L^\Phi(M, \tau)$ (noncommutative/classical), where $M$ is the semifinite von Neumann algebra with faithful normal semifinite trace $\tau$ and $\Phi: [0, \infty ) $ is a Orlicz function such that $ [0, \infty ) \ni t \rightarrow \left({\Phi(t)}\right)^{ \frac{1}{p}}$ is convex for some $p >1$. To establish this convergence we follow similar approach as Bufetov and Anantharaman-Delaroche. Thus, additionally we obtain Rota theorem on the same noncommutative Orlicz space by extending the earlier work of Anantharaman-Delaroche. Anantharaman-Delaroche proved Rota theorem for noncommutative $L^p$-spaces for $p >1$, and mentioned as ``interesting open problem'' to extend it to noncommutative $L\log L$-space as classical case. In the end we also look at the convergence of averages of spherical averages associated to free group and free semigroup actions on noncommutative spaces.

Abstract:For stochastic $C_0$-semigroups on $L^1$-spaces there is wealth of results that show strong convergence to an equilibrium as $t \to \infty$, given that the semigroup contains a partial integral operator. This has plenty of applications to transport equations and in mathematical biology. However, up to now partial integral operators do not play a prominent role in theorems which yield uniform convergence of the semigroup rather than only strong convergence. In this article we prove that, for irreducible stochastic semigroups, uniform convergence to an equilibrium is actually equivalent to being partially integral and uniformly mean ergodic. In addition to this Tauberian theorem, we also show that our semigroup is uniformly convergent if and only if it is partially integral and the dual semigroup satisfies a certain irreducibility condition. Our proof is based on a uniform version of a lower bound theorem of Lasota and Yorke, which we combine with various techniques from Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:We prove a uniform vector-valued Wiener-Wintner Theorem for a class of operators that includes compositions of ergodic Koopman operators with contractive multiplication operators. Our results are new even in the case of complex-valued functions, as they also apply to some non-positive non-contractive operators, and they give new uniform pointwise theorems for ergodic, weakly mixing, and mildly mixing Koopman operators.

Abstract:We extend the Malliavin theory for $L^2$-functionals on product probability spaces that has recently been developed by Decreusefond and Halconruy (2019) and by Duerinckx (2021), by characterizing the domains and investigating the actions of the three Malliavin operators in terms of the infinite Hoeffding decomposition in $L^2$, which we identify as the natural analogue of the famous Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition on Gaussian and Poisson spaces. We further combine this theory with Stein's method for normal approximation in order to provide three different types of abstract Berry-Esseen and Wasserstein bounds: a) Malliavin-Stein bounds involving the Malliavin gradient $D$ and the pseudo-inverse of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck generator $L$, b) bounds featuring the carré-du-champ operator $\Gamma$ and c) bounds making use of a Clark-Ocone type integration-by-parts formula. To demonstrate the flexibility of these abstract bounds, we derive quantitative central limit theorems for the number of monochromatic edges in a uniform random coloring of a graph sequence as well as for random sums and prove an infinite version of the quantitative de Jong CLT that has recently been proved by G. Peccati and the author (2017) and by the author (2023). As a further theoretical application, we deduce new abstract Berry-Esseen and Wasserstein bounds for functionals of a general independent Rademacher sequence.

Abstract:We establish in this paper a new form of Plünnecke-type inequalities for ergodic probability measure-preserving actions of any countable abelian group. Using a correspondence principle for product sets, this allows us to deduce lower bounds on the upper and lower Banach densities of any product set in terms of the upper Banach density of an iterated product set of one of its addends. These bounds are new already in the case of the integers. We also introduce the notion of an ergodic basis, which is parallel, but significantly weaker than the analogous notion of an additive basis, and deduce Plünnecke bounds on their impact functions with respect to both the upper and lower Banach densities on any countable abelian group.

Pointwise ergodic theorems along fractional powers of primes

Abstract:We establish pointwise convergence for nonconventional ergodic averages taken along $\lfloor p^c\rfloor$, where $p$ is a prime number and $c\in(1,4/3)$ on $L^r$, $r\in(1,\infty)$. In fact, we consider averages along more general sequences $\lfloor h(p)\rfloor$, where $h$ belongs in a wide class of functions, the so-called $c$-regularly varying functions. We also establish uniform multiparameter oscillation estimates for our ergodic averages and the corresponding multiparameter pointwise ergodic theorem in the spirit of Dunford and Zygmund. A key ingredient of our approach are certain exponential sum estimates, which we also use for establishing a Waring-type result. Assuming that the Riemann zeta function has any zero-free strip upgrades our exponential sum estimates to polynomially saving ones and this makes a conditional result regarding the behavior of our ergodic averages on $L^1$ to not seem entirely out of reach.

Non-convergence of some non-commuting double ergodic averages

Abstract:Let $S$ and $T$ be measure-preserving transformations of a probability space $(X,{\mathcal B},\mu)$. Let $f$ be a bounded measurable functions, and consider the integrals of the corresponding `double' ergodic averages: \[\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=0}^{n-1} \int f(S^ix)f(T^ix)\ d\mu(x) \qquad (n\ge 1).\] We construct examples for which these integrals do not converge as $n\to\infty$. These include examples in which $S$ and $T$ are rigid, and hence have entropy zero, answering a question of Frantzikinakis and Host. Our proof begins with a corresponding construction for orthogonal operators on a Hilbert space, and then obtains transformations of a Gaussian measure space from them.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a non-commutative analogue of Calderón’s transference principle, which allows us to deduce the non-commutative maximal ergodic inequalities from the special case—operator-valued maximal inequalities. As applications, we deduce the non-commutative Stein–Calderón maximal ergodic inequality and the dimension-free estimates of the non-commutative Wiener maximal ergodic inequality over Euclidean spaces. We also show the corresponding individual ergodic theorems. To show Wiener’s pointwise ergodic theorem, following a somewhat standard way we construct a dense subset on which pointwise convergence holds. To show Jones’ pointwise ergodic theorem, we use again the transference principle together with the Littlewood–Paley method, which is different from Jones’ original variational method that is still unavailable in the non-commutative setting.
