Abstract:We explore a duality between von-Neumann's mean ergodic theorem in von-Neumann algebra and Birkhoff's mean ergodic theorem in the pre-dual Banach space of von-Neumann algebras. Besides improving known mean ergodic theorems on von-Neumann algebras, we prove Birkhoff's mean ergodic theorem for any locally compact second countable amenable group action on the pre-dual Banach space.

Abstract:In this article, we consider actions of \mathcal{Z}_+^d, \mathcal{R}_+^d and finitely generated free groups on a von Neumann algebras $M$ and prove a version of maximal ergodic inequality. Additionally, we establish non-commutative analogues of pointwise ergodic theorems for associated actions in the predual when M is finite.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with the study of additive ergodic averages in multiplicative systems and the investigation of the "pretentious" dynamical behaviour of these systems. We prove a mean ergodic theorem (Theorem A) that generalises Halász's mean value theorem for finitely generated multiplicative functions taking values in the unit circle. In addition, we obtain two structural results concerning the "pretentious" dynamical behaviour of finitely generated multiplicative systems. Moreover, motivated by the independence principle between additive and multiplicative structures of the integers, we explore the joint ergodicity (as a natural notion of independence) of an additive and a finitely generated multiplicative action, both acting on the same probability space. In Theorem B, we show that such actions are jointly ergodic whenever no "local obstructions" arise, and we give a concrete description of these "local obstructions". As an application, we obtain some new combinatorial results regarding arithmetic configurations in large sets of integers including refinements of a special case of Szemerédi's theorem.

Abstract:We establish two ergodic theorems which have among their corollaries numerous classical results from multiplicative number theory, including the Prime Number Theorem, a theorem of Pillai-Selberg, a theorem of Erdős-Delange, the mean value theorem of Wirsing, and special cases of the mean value theorem of Halász. By building on the ideas behind our ergodic results, we recast Sarnak's Möbius disjointness conjecture in a new dynamical framework. This naturally leads to an extension of Sarnak's conjecture which focuses on the disjointness of additive and multiplicative semigroup actions. We substantiate this extension by providing proofs of several special cases.

Abstract:In this paper we study stable ergodicity of the action of groups of diffeomorphisms on smooth manifolds. The existence of such actions is known only on one dimensional manifolds. The aim of this paper is to introduce a geometric method to overcome this restriction and for constructing higher dimensional examples. In particular, we show that every closed manifold admits stably ergodic finitely generated group actions by diffeomorphisms of class $C^{1+\alpha}$. We also prove the stable ergodicity of certain algebraic actions including the natural action of a generic pair of matrices near the identity on a sphere of arbitrary dimension. These are consequences of the quasi-conformal blender, a local and stable mechanism/phenomenon introduced in this paper, which encapsulates our method to prove stable local ergodicity by providing quasi-conformal orbits with fine controlled geometry. The quasi-conformal blender is developed in the context of pseudo-semigroup actions of locally defined smooth diffeomorphisms. This allows for applications in different settings, including for the smooth foliations of arbitrary codimension.

An uncountable ergodic Roth theorem and applications

Abstract:We establish an uncountable amenable ergodic Roth theorem, in which the acting group is not assumed to be countable and the space need not be separable. This generalizes a previous result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang, and complements a result of Zorin-Kranich. We establish the following two additional results: First, a combinatorial application about triangular patterns in certain subsets of the Cartesian square of arbitrary amenable groups, extending a result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang for countable amenable groups. Second, a new uniformity aspect in the double recurrence theorem for $\Gamma$-systems for arbitrary uniformly amenable groups $\Gamma$. Our uncountable Roth theorem is crucial in the proof of both of these results.

As an application we present a proof Wiener's generalization of von Neumann's result in which the group acting on the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is any abelian group of unitary transformations of $\mathcal{H}$.

Abstract:We establish a connection between two variants of van der Corput's Difference Theorem (vdCDT) for countably infinite amenable groups G and the ergodic hierarchy of mixing properties of a unitary representation U of G . In particular, we show that one variant of vdCDT corresponds to subrepresentations of the left regular representation, and another variant of vdCDT corresponds to the absence of finite dimensional subrepresentations. We then obtain applications for measure preserving actions of countably infinite abelian groups.

Asymptotic total ergodicity for actions of $\mathbb{F}[t]$ and polynomial configurations over finite fields and rings

Abstract:We obtain new combinatorial results about polynomial configurations in large subsets of finite fields and rings by utilizing the phenomenon of asymptotic total ergodicity (previously studied for actions of $\mathbb{Z}$ on modular rings $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ in [Bergelson--Best, 2023]) in the context of actions of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}[t]$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. Drawing inspiration from the well-understood limiting behavior of polynomial ergodic averages in totally ergodic systems, we show that the natural action of $\mathbb{F}[t]$ on a sequence of quotient rings $\mathbb{F}[t]/Q_n(t)\mathbb{F}[t]$, $Q_n(t) \in \mathbb{F}[t]$, is asymptotically totally ergodic if and only if every polynomial $P(x) \in (\mathbb{F}[t])[x]$ with $P(0) = 0$ asymptotically equidistributes in a subgroup of $\mathbb{F}[t]/Q_n(t)\mathbb{F}[t]$. We then derive several combinatorial consequences: (1) We establish a power saving bound for the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite fields of fixed characteristic, complementing recent work of Li and Sauermann giving power saving bounds using the polynomial method. (2) We prove an enhancement of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem guaranteeing many pairs $(x,y)$ with $x \in A$ and $x + P(y) \in B$ whenever $A$ and $B$ are large subsets of a quotient ring $\mathbb{F}[t]/Q(t)\mathbb{F}[t]$ that exhibits a sufficiently high level of approximate total ergodicity and the polynomial $P$ satisfies a rather general condition related to equidistributional properties studied in [Bergelson--Leibman, 2016]. We also show that, in the absence of asymptotic total ergodicity and an equidistribution condition on P, one cannot hope for such a refinement of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem. (3) We produce new families of examples of partition regular polynomial equations over finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the quantitative mean ergodic theorems for two subclasses of power bounded operators on a fixed noncommutative L p space with 1 < p < ∞ , which mainly concerns power bounded invertible operators and Lamperti contractions. Our approach to the quantitative ergodic theorems relies on noncommutative square function inequalities. The establishment of the latter involves several new ingredients such as the almost orthogonality and Calderón-Zygmund arguments for non-smooth kernels from semi-commutative harmonic analysis, the extension properties of the operators under consideration from operator theory, and a noncommutative version of the classical transference method due to Coifman and Weiss.

We apply symplectic methods developed by Goldman and Xia to prove that the action is ergodic.

Abstract:Let R be a ring, let G be an amenable group and let R∗G$$R{*}G$$ be a crossed product. The goal of this paper is to construct, starting with a suitable additive function L on the category of left modules over R, an additive function on a subcategory of the category of left modules over R∗G$$R{*}G$$, which coincides with the whole category if L(RR)<∞$$L({}_RR) <\infty $$. This construction can be performed using a dynamical invariant associated with the original function L, called algebraic L-entropy. We apply our results to two classical problems on group rings: the stable finiteness and the zero-divisors conjectures.

Abstract:Different notions of amenability on hypergroups and their relations are studied. Developing Leptin's theorem for discrete hypergroups, we characterize the existence of a bounded approximate identity for hypergroup Fourier algebras. We study the Leptin condition for discrete hypergroups derived from the representation theory of some classes of compact groups. Studying amenability of the hypergroup algebras for discrete commutative hypergroups, we obtain some results on amenability properties of some central Banach algebras on compact and discrete groups.

Abstract:In 2022, using methods from ergodic theory, Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson resolved a longstanding conjecture of Erdős about sumsets in large subsets of the natural numbers. In this paper, we extend this result to several important classes of amenable groups, including all finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups, and all abelian groups $(G,+)$ with the property that the subgroup $2G := \{g+g : g\in G\}$ has finite index. We prove that in any group $G$ from the above classes, any $A\subset G$ with positive upper Banach density contains a shifted product set of the form $\{tb_ib_j\colon i<j\}$, for some infinite sequence $(b_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ and some $t\in G$. In fact, we show this result for all amenable groups that posses a property which we call square absolute continuity. Our results provide answers to several questions and conjectures posed in a recent survey of Kra, Moreira, Richter and Robertson.
