Abstract:By proving an amenable version of Katok's entropy formula and handling the quasi tiling techniques, we establish large deviations bounds for countable discrete amenable group actions. This generalizes the classical results of Lai-Sang Young.

Abstract:We establish an uncountable amenable ergodic Roth theorem, in which the acting group is not assumed to be countable and the space need not be separable. This generalizes a previous result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang, and complements a result of Zorin-Kranich. We establish the following two additional results: First, a combinatorial application about triangular patterns in certain subsets of the Cartesian square of arbitrary amenable groups, extending a result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang for countable amenable groups. Second, a new uniformity aspect in the double recurrence theorem for $\Gamma$-systems for arbitrary uniformly amenable groups $\Gamma$. Our uncountable Roth theorem is crucial in the proof of both of these results.

Abstract:In this article, we consider actions of \mathcal{Z}_+^d, \mathcal{R}_+^d and finitely generated free groups on a von Neumann algebras $M$ and prove a version of maximal ergodic inequality. Additionally, we establish non-commutative analogues of pointwise ergodic theorems for associated actions in the predual when M is finite.

Abstract:In 2022, using methods from ergodic theory, Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson resolved a longstanding conjecture of Erdős about sumsets in large subsets of the natural numbers. In this paper, we extend this result to several important classes of amenable groups, including all finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups, and all abelian groups $(G,+)$ with the property that the subgroup $2G := \{g+g : g\in G\}$ has finite index. We prove that in any group $G$ from the above classes, any $A\subset G$ with positive upper Banach density contains a shifted product set of the form $\{tb_ib_j\colon i<j\}$, for some infinite sequence $(b_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ and some $t\in G$. In fact, we show this result for all amenable groups that posses a property which we call square absolute continuity. Our results provide answers to several questions and conjectures posed in a recent survey of Kra, Moreira, Richter and Robertson.

Abstract:We establish two ergodic theorems which have among their corollaries numerous classical results from multiplicative number theory, including the Prime Number Theorem, a theorem of Pillai-Selberg, a theorem of Erdős-Delange, the mean value theorem of Wirsing, and special cases of the mean value theorem of Halász. By building on the ideas behind our ergodic results, we recast Sarnak's Möbius disjointness conjecture in a new dynamical framework. This naturally leads to an extension of Sarnak's conjecture which focuses on the disjointness of additive and multiplicative semigroup actions. We substantiate this extension by providing proofs of several special cases.

Abstract:We establish a connection between two variants of van der Corput's Difference Theorem (vdCDT) for countably infinite amenable groups G and the ergodic hierarchy of mixing properties of a unitary representation U of G . In particular, we show that one variant of vdCDT corresponds to subrepresentations of the left regular representation, and another variant of vdCDT corresponds to the absence of finite dimensional subrepresentations. We then obtain applications for measure preserving actions of countably infinite abelian groups.

Entropy of group actions beyond uniform lattices

Abstract:Entropy of measure preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are the ones given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein-Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein-Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

Abstract:We obtain the following embedding theorem for symbolic dynamical systems. Let G be a countable amenable group with the comparison property. Let X be a strongly aperiodic subshift over G. Let Y be a strongly irreducible shift of finite type over G that has no global period, meaning that the shift action is faithful on Y. If the topological entropy of X is strictly less than that of Y and Y contains at least one factor of X, then X embeds into Y. This result partially extends the classical result of Krieger when and the results of Lightwood when for . The proof relies on recent developments in the theory of tilings and quasi-tilings of amenable groups.

Abstract:In this paper we study chaotic behavior of actions of a countable discrete group acting on a compact metric space by self-homeomorphisms.For actions of a countable discrete group G, we introduce local weak mixing and Li-Yorke chaos; and prove that if G is infinite then local weak mixing implies Li-Yorke chaos, and if G is an infinite countable discrete amenable group then positive topological entropy implies local weak mixing. Moreover, when considering a shift of finite type for actions of an infinite countable amenable group G, if the action has positive topological entropy then its homoclinic equivalence relation is non-trivial, and if additionally G is residually finite and the action contains a dense set of periodic points then the converse holds true.

Abstract:Symbolic dynamical theory plays an important role in the research of amenability with a countable group. Motivated by the deep results of Dougall and Sharp, we study the group extensions for topologically mixing random shifts of finite type. For a countable group $G$, we consider the potential connections between relative Gurevič pressure (entropy), the spectral radius of random Perron-Frobenius operator and amenability of $G$. Given $G^{\rm ab}$ by the abelianization of $G$ where $G^{\rm ab}=G/[G,G]$, we consider the random group extensions of random shifts of finite type between $G$ and $G^{\rm ab}$. It can be proved that the relative Gurevič entropy of random group $G$ extensions is equal to the relative Gurevič entropy of random group $G^{\rm ab}$ extensions if and only if $G$ is amenable. Moreover, we establish the relativized variational principle and discuss the unique equilibrium state for random group $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ extensions.

Subgroup mixing and random walks in groups acting on hyperbolic spaces

Abstract:We study the topological dynamics of the action of an acylindrically hyperbolic group on the space of its infinite index convex cocompact subgroups by conjugation. We show that, for any suitable probability measure $\mu$, random walks with respect to $\mu$ will produce elements with strong mixing properties for this action asymptotically almost surely. In particular, when the group has no finite normal subgroups this implies that the action is highly topologically transitive. Along the way, we prove technical results about convex cocompact subgroups which allow us to extend some results on random walks of Abbott and the first author.

Abstract:We approach the study of sub-von Neumann algebras of the group von Neumann algebra $L\Gamma$ for countable groups $\Gamma$ from a dynamical perspective. It is shown that $L(\Gamma)$ admits a maximal invariant amenable subalgebra. The notion of invariant probability measures (IRAs) on the space of sub-algebras is introduced, analogous to the concept of Invariant Random Subgroups. And it is shown that amenable IRAs are supported on the maximal amenable invariant sub-algebra.

Revisiting sums and products in countable and finite fields

Abstract:We establish a polynomial ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field $K$. As an application, we deduce--via a variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle--that for fields of characteristic zero, any "large" set $E\subset K$ contains "many" patterns of the form $\{p(x)+y,xy\}$, for every non-constant polynomial $p(x)\in K[x]$. Our methods are flexible enough that they allow us to recover analogous density results in the setting of finite fields and, with the aid of a new finitistic variant of Bergelson's "colouring trick", show that for $r\in \mathbb{N}$ fixed, any $r-$colouring of a large enough finite field will contain monochromatic patterns of the form $\{x,p(x)+y,xy\}$. In a different direction, we obtain a double ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field. An adaptation of the argument for affine actions of finite fields leads to a generalisation of a theorem of Shkredov. Finally, to highlight the utility of the aforementioned finitistic "colouring trick", we provide a conditional, elementary generalisation of Green and Sanders' $\{x,y,x+y,xy\}$ theorem.

Abstract:The local properties of entropy for a countable discrete amenable group action are studied. For such an action, a local variational principle for a given finite open cover is established, from which the variational relation between the topological and measure-theoretic entropy tuples is deduced. While doing this it is shown that two kinds of measure-theoretic entropy for finite Borel covers coincide. Moreover, two special classes of such an action: systems with uniformly positive entropy and completely positive entropy are investigated.

Abstract:This study delves into the exploration of the limiting shape theorem for subadditive processes on finitely generated groups with polynomial growth, commonly referred to as virtually nilpotent groups. Investigating the algebraic structures underlying these processes, we present a generalized form of the asymptotic shape theorem within this framework. Extending subadditive ergodic theory in this context, we consider processes which exhibit both at most and at least linear random growth. We conclude with applications and illustrative examples.
