Abstract:Let Xn be a standard real symmetric (complex Hermitian) Wigner matrix, y1, y2, . . . , yn a sequence of independent real random variables independent of Xn. Consider the deformed Wigner matrix Hn,α = n-1/2Xn + n-α/2 diag (y1, . . . , yn), where 0<α<1. It is well known that the average spectral distribution is the classical Wigner semicircle law, i.e., the Stieltjes transform mn,α(z) converges in probability to the corresponding Stieltjes transform m(z). In this paper, we shall give the asymptotic estimate for the expectation Emn,α(z) and varianceVar(mn,α(z)), and establish the central limit theorem for linear statistics with sufficiently regular test function. A basic tool in the study is Stein’s equation and its generalization which naturally leads to a certain recursive equation.
Local Semicircle Law and Gaussian Fluctuation for Hermite Β Ensemble

Abstract:Let $\beta>0$ and consider an $n$-point process $\lambda_1, \lambda_2,..., \lambda_n$ from Hermite $\beta$ ensemble on the real line $\mathbb{R}$. Dumitriu and Edelman discovered a tri-diagonal matrix model and established the global Wigner semicircle law for normalized empirical measures. In this paper we prove that the average number of states in a small interval in the bulk converges in probability when the length of the interval is larger than $\sqrt {\log n}$, i.e., local semicircle law holds. And the number of positive states in $(0,\infty)$ is proved to fluctuate normally around its mean $n/2$ with variance like $\log n/\pi^2\beta$. The proofs rely largely on the way invented by Valk$\acute{o}$ and Vir$\acute{a}$g of counting states in any interval and the classical martingale argument.

Abstract:In this paper, we improve known results on the convergence rates of spectral distributions of large-dimensional sample covariance matrices of size p × n. Using the Stieltjes transform, we first prove that the expected spectral distribution converges to the limiting Marcenko--Pastur distribution with the dimension sample size ratio y=yn=p/n at a rate of O(n- 1/2) if y keeps away from 0 and 1, under the assumption that the entries have a finite eighth moment. Furthermore, the rates for both the convergence in probability and the almost sure convergence are shown to be Op(n-2/5) and oa.s.(n-2/5+\eta), respectively, when y is away from 1. It is interesting that the rate in all senses is O(n-1/8) when y is close to 1.

Abstract:In this note, we improve the convergence rates of spectral distributions that large-dimensional sample covariance matrices of size p×n tend to the Marenko-Pastur distribution, under the assumption that the entries have a finite eighth moment. Especially, we show that the expected spectral distributions of large-dimensional sample covariance matrices of size p×n tends to the limiting distribution with the dimension sample size ratio y=y_n=p/n at the rate of O(n~ -1/6 ) if y is close to 1 . Similar results for both the convergence in probability and the almost sure convergence are shown to be O_p(n~ -1/6 ) and O_ a.s. (n~ -1/6 ), under the condition that y is close to 1.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the convergence rates of empirical spectral distribution of large dimensional quaternion sample covariance matrix. Assume that the entries of $\mathbf X_n$ ($p\times n$) are independent quaternion random variables with mean zero, variance 1 and uniformly bounded sixth moments. Denote $\mathbf S_n=\frac{1}{n}\mathbf X_n\mathbf X_n^*$. Using Bai inequality, we prove that the expected empirical spectral distribution (ESD) converges to the limiting Mar${\rm \check{c}}$enko-Pastur distribution with the ratio of the dimension to sample size $y_p=p/n$ at a rate of $O\left(n^{-1/2}a_n^{-3/4}\right)$ when $a_n>n^{-2/5}$ or $O\left(n^{-1/5}\right)$ when $a_n\le n^{-2/5}$, where $a_n=(1-\sqrt{y_p})^2$ is the lower bound for the M-P law. Moreover, the rates for both the convergence in probability and the almost sure convergence are also established. The weak convergence rate of the ESD is $O\left(n^{-2/5}a_n^{-2/5}\right)$ when $a_n>n^{-2/5}$ or $O\left(n^{-1/5}\right)$ when $a_n\le n^{-2/5}$. The strong convergence rate of the ESD is $O\left(n^{-2/5+\eta}a_n^{-2/5}\right)$ when $a_n>n^{-2/5}$ or $O\left(n^{-1/5}\right)$ when $a_n\le n^{-2/5}$ for any $\eta>0$.

Abstract:Let {X-ij}, i, j = .... be a double array of i.i.d. complex random variables with EX11 =0, E vertical bar X-11 vertical bar(2) = 1 and E vertical bar X-11 vertical bar(4) < infinity, and let A(n) = 1/N T-n(1/2) X-n (XnTn1/2)-T-*, where T-n(1/2) is the square root of a nonnegative definite matrix T-n and X-n is the n x N matrix of the upper-left corner of the double array. The matrix A(n) can be considered as a sample covariance matrix of an i.i.d. sample from a population with mean zero and covariance matrix T-n, or as a multivariate F matrix if T-n is the inverse of another sample covariance matrix. To investigate the limiting behavior of the eigenvectors of A(n), a new form of empirical spectral distribution is defined with weights defined by eigenvectors and it is then shown that this has the same limiting spectral distribution as the empirical spectral distribution defined by equal weights. Moreover, if {X-ij} and T-n are either real or complex and some additional moment assumptions are made then linear spectral statistics defined by the eigenvectors of A(n) are proved to have Gaussian limits, which suggests that the eigenvector matrix of A(n) is nearly Haar distributed when T-n is a multiple of the identity matrix, an easy consequence for a Wishart matrix.

Abstract:Abstract We show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix of size N converge to the Tracy–Widom laws at a rate $$O(N^{-1/3+\omega })$$ O ( N - 1 / 3 + ω ) , as N tends to infinity. For Wigner matrices this improves the previous rate $$O(N^{-2/9+\omega })$$ O ( N - 2 / 9 + ω ) obtained by Bourgade (J Eur Math Soc, 2021) for generalized Wigner matrices. Our result follows from a Green function comparison theorem, originally introduced by Erdős et al. (Adv Math 229(3):1435–1515, 2012) to prove edge universality, on a finer spectral parameter scale with improved error estimates. The proof relies on the continuous Green function flow induced by a matrix-valued Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. Precise estimates on leading contributions from the third and fourth order moments of the matrix entries are obtained using iterative cumulant expansions and recursive comparisons for correlation functions, along with uniform convergence estimates for correlation kernels of the Gaussian invariant ensembles.

Norm Convergence Rate for Multivariate Quadratic Polynomials of Wigner Matrices

Abstract:We study Hermitian non-commutative quadratic polynomials of multiple independent Wigner matrices. We prove that, with the exception of some specific reducible cases, the limiting spectral density of the polynomials always has a square root growth at its edges and prove an optimal local law around these edges. Combining these two results, we establish that, as the dimension $N$ of the matrices grows to infinity, the operator norm of such polynomials $q$ converges to a deterministic limit with a rate of convergence of $N^{-2/3+o(1)}$. Here, the exponent in the rate of convergence is optimal. For the specific reducible cases, we also provide a classification of all possible edge behaviours.

Abstract:Consider a square random matrix with independent and identically distributed entries of mean zero and unit variance. We show that as the dimension tends to infinity, the spectral radius is equivalent to the square root of the dimension in probability. This result can also be seen as the convergence of the support in the circular law theorem under optimal moment conditions. In the proof we establish the convergence in law of the reciprocal characteristic polynomial to a random analytic function outside the unit disc, related to a hyperbolic Gaussian analytic function. The proof is short and differs from the usual approaches for the spectral radius. It relies on a tightness argument and a joint central limit phenomenon for traces of fixed powers.

Abstract:These notes provide an introduction to the local semicircle law from random matrix theory, as well as some of its applications. We focus on Wigner matrices, Hermitian random matrices with independent upper-triangular entries with zero expectation and constant variance. We state and prove the local semicircle law, which says that the eigenvalue distribution of a Wigner matrix is close to Wigner's semicircle distribution, down to spectral scales containing slightly more than one eigenvalue. This local semicircle law is formulated using the Green function, whose individual entries are controlled by large deviation bounds. We then discuss three applications of the local semicircle law: first, complete delocalization of the eigenvectors, stating that with high probability the eigenvectors are approximately flat; second, rigidity of the eigenvalues, giving large deviation bounds on the locations of the individual eigenvalues; third, a comparison argument for the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk spectrum, showing that the local eigenvalue statistics of two Wigner matrices coincide provided the first four moments of their entries coincide. We also sketch further applications to eigenvalues near the spectral edge, and to the distribution of eigenvectors.

Abstract:Traces of large powers of real-valued Wigner matrices are known to have Gaussian fluctuations: for $A=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i,j \leq n}\in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}, A=A^T$ with $(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i \leq j \leq n}$ i.i.d., symmetric, subgaussian, $\mathbb{E}[a^{2}_{11}]=1,$ and $p=o(n^{2/3}),$ as $n,p \to \infty,$ $\frac{\sqrt{\pi}}{2^{p}}(tr(A^p)-\mathbb{E}[tr(A^p)]) \Rightarrow N(0,1).$ This work shows the entries of $A^{2p},$ properly scaled, also have normal limiting laws when $n \to \infty, p=n^{o(1)}:$ some normalizations depend on $\mathbb{E}[a_{11}^4],$ contributions that become negligible as $p \to \infty,$ whereas the behavior of the diagonal entries of $A^{2p+1}$ depends substantially on all the moments of $a_{11}$ when $p$ is bounded or the moments of $a_{11}$ grow relatively fast compared to it. This result demonstrates large powers of Wigner matrices are roughly Wigner matrices with normal entries when $a_{11} \overset{d}{=} -a_{11},\mathbb{E}[a^{2}_{11}]=1, \mathbb{E}[|a_{11}|^{8+\epsilon_0}] \leq C(\epsilon_0),$ providing another perspective on eigenvector universality, which until now has been justified exclusively using local laws. The last part of this paper finds the first-order terms of traces of Wishart matrices in the random matrix theory regime, rendering yet another connection between Wigner and Wishart ensembles as well as an avenue to extend the results herein for the former to the latter. The primary tools employed are the method of moments and a simple identity the Catalan numbers satisfy.

Large deviations of the empirical spectral measure of supercritical sparse Wigner matrices

Abstract:Let $\Xi$ be the adjacency matrix of an Erdős-Rényi graph on $n$ vertices and with parameter $p$ and consider $A$ a $n\times n$ centered random symmetric matrix with bounded i.i.d. entries above the diagonal. When the mean degree $np$ diverges, the empirical spectral measure of the normalized Hadamard product $(A \circ \Xi)/\sqrt{np}$ converges weakly in probability to the semicircle law. In the regime where $p\ll 1$ and $ np \gg \log n$, we prove a large deviations principle for the empirical spectral measure with speed $n^2p$ and with a good rate function solution of a certain variational problem. The rate function reveals in particular that the only possible deviations at the exponential scale $n^2p$ are around measures coming from Quadratic Vector Equations. As a byproduct, we obtain a large deviations principle for the empirical spectral measure of supercritical Erdős-Rényi graphs.

Abstract:Consider the random matrix $\bW_n = \bB_n + n^{-1}\bX_n^*\bA_n\bX_n$, where $\bA_n$ and $\bB_n$ are Hermitian matrices of dimensions $p \times p$ and $n \times n$, respectively, and $\bX_n$ is a $p \times n$ random matrix with independent and identically distributed entries of mean 0 and variance 1. Assume that $p$ and $n$ grow to infinity proportionally, and that the spectral measures of $\bA_n$ and $\bB_n$ converge as $p, n \to \infty$ towards two probability measures $\calA$ and $\calB$. Building on the groundbreaking work of \cite{marchenko1967distribution}, which demonstrated that the empirical spectral distribution of $\bW_n$ converges towards a probability measure $F$ characterized by its Stieltjes transform, this paper investigates the properties of $F$ when $\calB$ is a general measure. We show that $F$ has an analytic density at the region near where the Stieltjes transform of $\calB$ is bounded. The density closely resembles $C\sqrt{|x - x_0|}$ near certain edge points $x_0$ of its support for a wide class of $\calA$ and $\calB$. We provide a complete characterization of the support of $F$. Moreover, we show that $F$ can exhibit discontinuities at points where $\calB$ is discontinuous.

Abstract:Given an symmetric random matrix, with elements above the diagonal given by i.i.d. random variables having mean zero and unit variance. It is known that when , then fluctuation of the largest eigenvalue of follows a Tracy–Widom distribution. When the law of is regularly varying with index , then the largest eigenvalue has a Fréchet distribution. An intermediate regime is recently uncovered in Diaconu (Ann Probab 51(2):774–804, 2023): when , then the law of the largest eigenvalue converges to a deformed Fréchet distribution. In this work we vastly extend the scope where the latter distribution may arise. We show that the same deformed Fréchet distribution arises (1) for sparse Wigner matrices with an average of nonzero entries on each row; (2) for periodically banded Wigner matrices with bandwidth ; and more generally for weighted adjacency matrices of any -regular graphs with . In all these cases, we further prove that the joint distribution of the finitely many largest eigenvalues of converge to a deformed Poisson process, and that eigenvectors of the outlying eigenvalues of are localized, implying a mobility edge phenomenon at the spectral edge 2 for Wigner matrices. The sparser case with average degree is also explored. Our technique extends to sample covariance matrices, proving for the first time that its largest eigenvalue still follows a deformed Fréchet distribution, assuming the matrix entries satisfy . The proof utilizes a universality result recently established by Brailovskaya and Van Handel (Universality and sharp matrix concentration inequalities, 2022).

Abstract:We study the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of products of independent non-Hermitian random matrices to the power of the Circular Law. The distance to the deterministic limit distribution will be measured in terms of a uniform Kolmogorov-like distance. First, we prove that for products of Ginibre matrices, the optimal rate is given by $\mathcal O (1/\sqrt n)$, which is attained with overwhelming probability up to a logarithmic correction. Avoiding the edge, the rate of convergence of the mean empirical spectral distribution is even faster. Second, we show that also products of matrices with independent entries attain this optimal rate in the bulk up to a logarithmic factor. In the case of Ginibre matrices, we apply a saddlepoint approximation to a double contour integral representation of the density and in the case of matrices with independent entries we make use of techniques from local laws.

Abstract:In the present paper we give two alternate proofs of the well known theorem that the empirical distribution of the appropriately normalized roots of the $n^{th}$ monic Hermite polynomial $H_n$ converges weakly to the semicircle law, which is also the weak limit of the empirical distribution of appropriately normalized eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix. In the first proof -- based on the recursion satisfied by the Hermite polynomials -- we show that the generating function of the moments of roots of $H_n$ is convergent and it satisfies a fixed point equation, which is also satisfied by $c(z^2)$, where $c(z)$ is the generating function of the Catalan numbers $C_k$. In the second proof we compute the leading and the second leading term of the $k^{th}$ moments (as a polynomial in $n$) of $H_n$ and show that the first one coincides with $C_{k/2}$, the $(k/2)^{\rm th}$ Catalan number, where $k$ is even and the second one is given by $-(2^{2k-1}-\binom{2k-1}{k})$. We also mention the known result that the expectation of the characteristic polynomial ($p_n$) of a Wigner random matrix is exactly the Hermite polynomial ($H_n$), i.e. $Ep_n(x)=H_n(x)$, which suggest the presence of a deep connection between the Hermite polynomials and Wigner matrices.
