Geometry of Complex Bounded Domains with Finite-Volume Quotients

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:Suppose you have a nonorientable Lagrangian surface L in a symplectic 4-manifold. How far can you deform the symplectic form before the smooth isotopy class of L contains no Lagrangians? I solve this question for a particular Lagrangian Klein bottle. I also discuss some related conjectures.

Abstract:Recently Davis initiated the study of an $n$-dimensional analogue of the Klein bottle. This generalized Klein bottle occurs as a moduli space of planar polygons for a certain choice of side lengths. Davis determined many topological invariants and manifold-theoretic properties of this space. The main aim of this short note is to show that the $n$-Klein bottle is a real Bott manifold and determine the corresponding Bott matrix. We also determine two other classes of polygon spaces that are total spaces of an iterated $S^1$ bundle. In all these cases we compute the Betti numbers using a formula, due to Suciu and Trevisan.

Abstract:The standard Klein bottle coefficient in the construction of open descendants is shown to equal the Frobenius-Schur indicator of a conformal field theory. Other consistent Klein bottle projections are shown to correspond to simple currents. These observations enable us to generalize the standard open string construction from C-diagonal parent theories to include non-standard Klein bottles. Using (generalizations of) the Frobenius-Schur indicator we prove positivity and integrality of the resulting open and closed string state multiplicities for standard as well as non-standard Klein bottles.

Abstract:Abstract A Brillouin zone is the unit for the momentum space of a crystal. It is topologically a torus, and distinguishing whether a set of wave functions over the Brillouin torus can be smoothly deformed to another leads to the classification of various topological states of matter. Here, we show that under $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 gauge fields, i.e., hopping amplitudes with phases ±1, the fundamental domain of momentum space can assume the topology of a Klein bottle. This drastic change of the Brillouin zone theory is due to the projective symmetry algebra enforced by the gauge field. Remarkably, the non-orientability of the Brillouin Klein bottle corresponds to the topological classification by a $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 invariant, in contrast to the Chern number valued in $${\mathbb{Z}}$$ Z for the usual Brillouin torus. The result is a novel Klein bottle insulator featuring topological modes at two edges related by a nonlocal twist, radically distinct from all previous topological insulators. Our prediction can be readily achieved in various artificial crystals, and the discovery opens a new direction to explore topological physics by gauge-field-modified fundamental structures of physics.

Algebraic fundamental groups of fake projective planes

Abstract:Fundamental groups of fake projective planes fall into fifty distinct isomorphism classes, one for each complex conjugate pair. We prove that this is not the case for their algebraic fundamental groups: there are only forty-six isomorphism classes. We show that there are four pairs of complex conjugate pairs of fake projective planes that are \operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb{C}) -equivalent and hence have mutually isomorphic algebraic fundamental groups. All other pairs of algebraic fundamental groups are shown to be distinct through explicit finite étale covers. As a by-product, this provides the first examples of commensurable but nonisomorphic lattices in a rank one semisimple Lie group that have isomorphic profinite completions.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a classification of fundamental group elements representing simple closed curves on the punctured Klein bottle, Similar to the Birman-Series classification of curves on the punctured torus[1]. In the process, an explicit description of the mapping class group is given. We then apply this to give a counterexample the simple loop conjecture for representations from the Klein bottle group to PGL(2,R).

Abstract:We show that φ∘τ˜3,1:K→R4×{0}n−4 is the unique minimizer among immersed Klein bottles in its conformal class, where φ:S4→R4 is a stereographic projection and τ˜3,1 is the bipolar surface of Lawson's τ3,1-surface [11]. We conjecture that φ∘τ˜3,1 is the unique minimizer among immersed Klein bottles into Rn, n≥4, whose existence the authors and P. Breuning proved in [2].

Abstract:We propose a high dimensional generalisation of the standard Klein bottle, going beyond those considered previously. We address the problem of generating continuous scalar fields (distributions) and dynamical systems (flows) on such state spaces, which can provide a rich source of examples for future investigations. We consider a class of high dimensional dynamical systems that model distributed information processing within the human cortex, which may be capable of exhibiting some Klein bottle symmetries. We deploy topological data analytic methods in order to analyse their resulting dynamical behaviour, and suggesting future challenges.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

Abstract:We consider the question of how many essential Seifert Klein bottles with common boundary slope a knot in S^3 can bound, up to ambient isotopy. We prove that any hyperbolic knot in S^3 bounds at most six Seifert Klein bottles with a given boundary slope. The Seifert Klein bottles in a minimal projection of hyperbolic pretzel knots of length 3 are shown to be unique and pi_1-injective, with surgery along their boundary slope producing irreducible toroidal manifolds. The cable knots which bound essential Seifert Klein bottles are classified; their Seifert Klein bottles are shown to be non-pi_1-injective, and unique in the case of torus knots. For satellite knots we show that, in general, there is no upper bound for the number of distinct Seifert Klein bottles a knot can bound.

Abstract:Klein foams are analogues of Riemann surfaces for surfaces with one-dimensional singularities. They first appeared in mathematical physics (string theory etc.). By definition a Klein foam is constructed from Klein surfaces by gluing segments on their boundaries. We show that, a Klein foam is equivalent to a family of real forms of a complex algebraic curve with some structures. This correspondence reduces investigations of Klein foams to investigations of real forms of Riemann surfaces. We use known properties of real forms of Riemann surfaces to describe some topological and analytic properties of Klein foams.
