Abstract:
The cleanliness of the final optics assemblies (FOAs) has become the lynchpin of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). The two-phase flow method is applied to study the motion trajectory of moving aerosol particles in the FOAs. One of efficient clean technology, named purging system with the coupling of low-speed laminar wind and high-speed gas knife to remove particulate pollutants and achieve cleanness of atmospheric environment are designed and analyzed by means of experiments and simulations. Our studies demonstrate that when the exit wind speed of gas knife is more than 40 m/s, the surface temperature unevenness of optical components will certainly exceed 0.2 degrees Celsius badly reducing the conversion efficiency of FOAs. Investigation of the distance between the outlet of gas knife and the edge of optical lens indicates that the obvious deformation will almost disappear in the region near the outlet of the gas knife when the longitudinal distance is not less than 18 mm. The relationship between the attenuation distance of aerosol particles and the efficiency of purging system is studied in detail. The minimum distance between optical components is elaborately determined to be 170 mm, which realizes the full protection and thorough removal of particulate pollutants on the surface of optical components. Besides, it is thoughtfully settled that backflow at the outlet can be effectively restrained when the height of the backflow chamber is more than 100 mm.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main issue discussed in this paper is how to optimize cleaning technology to mitigate the problem of particle contamination on Final Optics Assemblies (FOAs). Specifically, the research focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Background Introduction**: The paper first introduces the basic principles of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and its demand for high-energy laser systems, pointing out that the cleanliness of FOAs is one of the key factors for achieving efficient energy conversion in ICF. 2. **Problem Description**: When high-energy lasers pass through the optical elements in FOAs, it may cause surface damage to the elements, thereby generating tiny aerosol particles. These contaminants can reattach to the surface of the optical elements during subsequent laser pulses, causing further damage and reducing the performance of the entire device. 3. **Solution**: To address the above issues, the paper proposes a cleaning technology that combines low-speed laminar flow with a high-speed gas knife. The effectiveness of this technology is validated through experimental and simulation analysis. 4. **Specific Research Content**: - **Gas Knife Parameter Analysis and Design**: The study examines the impact of the gas knife outlet wind speed on the surface temperature uniformity of the optical elements, determining the optimal wind speed value (40 m/s) to avoid reduced conversion efficiency of FOAs due to temperature non-uniformity. - **Attenuation Distance and Element Spacing Study**: The concept of "attenuation distance" of particles is defined, which is the distance over which particles decelerate from their initial speed to zero. Numerical simulations provide the attenuation distances for particles of different diameters and initial speeds, based on which the minimum spacing between adjacent optical elements (170 mm) is determined to ensure the effective operation of the cleaning system. - **Design of the Distance Between Gas Knife and Optical Elements**: The study investigates the optimal distance (18 mm) between the gas knife outlet and the edge of the optical elements to reduce surface pressure fluctuations and avoid deformation of the optical elements. - **Reflux Suppression**: The paper discusses how to effectively suppress the reflux phenomenon at the gas knife outlet by increasing the height of the reflux chamber, thereby maintaining a clean environment inside the equipment. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to develop an effective cleaning technology solution to reduce particle contaminants in FOAs, thereby improving the stability and efficiency of inertial confinement fusion devices.
