Abstract:To resolve the serious breakage and leakage problems for the cast iron water mains buried in the early years in the water-supply system, pipe stresses were firstly calculated based on the pipe soil interaction model, and the failure prediction model for the cast iron pipe was developed, based on the corrosion model, the residual strength evaluation method and the failure criterion. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to perform the probabilistic analysis, and the influence parameters analysis was given. Results show that pipes in large diameters are often broken because of circumferential stresses, and pipes in small diameters are prone to fail due to longitudinal stresses. The influence on the failure probability is large due to soil bedding lost induced by the breakage or uneven settlement when the corrosion depth reaches a certain depth. The corrosion model parameters, unsupported bedding length, and the residual strength parameters have large influence on the distribution of the safety factors for the cast iron pipe. The corrosion is one of the most important factors leading to the pipe failure. Reducing corrosion pit depth growth by using corrosion control technique can be the most effective way to decelerate the breakage growth rate and prolong the service life.
Probabilistic model to predict longitudinal fracture failure of buried pvc pipes

Abstract:To resolve the longitudinal fracture failure problems for the buried PVC pipes with inherent defects under the complex stress induced by loads,the failure prediction model was developed,taking circumferential mechanical characters of pipes and a crack growth model into consideration. Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations were used to perform the probabilistic analysis,because of the uncertainty of the model and parameters. Results show that it is suitable to adopting the failure prediction model to calculate the failure rates,because the calculated values agreed well with the measured data. The crack growth rate increased with time under constant external stresses. The pipes with larger defect sizes had shorter lifetimes. The failure rate when considering all of random variables was two times that of only considering the initial defect as a random variable,and it reached the maximum within 20 years,then slowed down gradually. The initial defect sizes,internal pressure,residual stresses and pipe thickness have large influence on the lifetime of PVC pipes. Increased internal pressure and residual stresses lead to increase failure rates. An accurate probability distribution of the initial defect is most important to calculate the failure rates. Reducing initial defect sizes by using suitable production process and installation technology can effectively extend the service life.
Failure Prediction and Reliability Analysis of Buried Grey Cast Iron Water Mains Considering Corrosion

Then, the residual strength associated with corrosion was evaluated, and a failure prediction model was given by using the failure crite-rion for the cast iron. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to perform the probabilistic analysis. The given model fully considers the influences of corrosion, external loads and uncertainties on the pipe failure. Results show that the pipes will not be failed when only considering the external loads. The corrosion is one of the very important factors contributing to the pipe failure. The probability density distribution of the safety factor of the pipe appears a lognormal distribution. The hazard of the pipe failure is large in 20-50 years, and it becomes small after 80 years and decreases with the time. The influence on the failure probability is large for considering soil bedding lost induced by the breakage or uneven settlement when the corrosion depth reaches a certain depth.
A Comprehensive Framework to Evaluate Hydraulic and Water Quality Impacts of Pipe Breaks on Water Distribution Systems

Abstract:Pipe breaks have significant impacts on the hydraulic and water quality performance of water distribution systems (WDSs). Therefore, it is important to evaluate these impacts for developing effective strategies to ultimately minimize the consequences of these events. However, there has been surprisingly limited research focusing on impact evaluation for pipe breaks so far. To address this gap, this paper proposes a framework to comprehensively evaluate hydraulic and water quality impacts of pipe breaks on a WDS using six quantitative metrics. These metrics primarily focus on identifying (i) break outflow volume, (ii) water shortage, (iii) nodes with reduced service quality, (iv) pipes with affected pressures, (v) pipes with reversed flow directions, and (vi) pipes with significantly increased velocities, for each breaking event within a WDS. Statistical behaviors, spatial properties, and pipe rankings of metric results are analyzed to reveal the underlying characteristics of impacts induced by pipe breaks. We illustrate the proposed framework using three WDSs with different properties. Results show that impacts of pipe breaks not only vary with pipe diameters but are also significantly influenced by pipe locations, when the break occurs, and the specific metric considered. The proposed framework greatly enhances the fundamental understanding of the underlying properties of breaking impacts on the hydraulic and water quality of WDSs, as well as the ranking of pipes based on the consequences of breaks. Such understanding offers important guidance to develop effective pipe management, resource planning, and break restoration strategies to minimize the impacts of breaking events on WDSs.

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology for evaluating fitness-for-service (i.e., safety, serviceability, and reliability) of corroded metal pipelines. A model for predicting pipe failure pressure is developed from a series of nonlinear finite-element analyses of metal pipes of different diameters and wall thicknesses with corrosion defects of different sizes and depths. The strength limit state (burst) and service limit states (yield and leakage) both are investigated in the pipe fitness-for-service analyses. Uncertainties associated with in situ measurement of flaw size, pipe geometry, pipe material properties, operating pressures, and corrosion in exposure environments are considered in a time-dependent reliability analysis of pipe performance over a service life of 50 years. Engineering variables that have the most significant impact on the reliability of a corroded pipe are identified through Monte Carlo-based sensitivity studies. Finally, a set of simple reliability-based evaluation tools are presented for assessing pipeline safety. The procedure and the results presented in this paper can be used to support decisions related to continued safe operation of pipes, optimal pipe inspection intervals, and maintenance schedules. Elastoplastic Pipe-Soil Interaction Analyses of Partially-Supported Jointed Water Mains

Abstract:Water distribution networks are essential components of water supply systems. The combination of pipe structural deterioration and mechanics leads to the failure of pipelines. A physical model for estimating the pipe failure must include both the pipe deterioration model and mechanics model. Winkler pipe-soil interaction (WPSI), an analytical mechanics model developed by Rajani and Tesfamariam (2004), takes external and internal loads, temperature changes, loss of bedding support, and the elastoplastic effect of soil into consideration. Based on the WPSI model, a method to evaluate the elastic and plastic areas was proposed in the present study. An FEM model based on pipe-soil interaction (PSI) element was used to verify the analytical model. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the soft soil, long pipe and high temperature induced the axial plastic deformation more likely, which, however, may not occur in normal scenarios. The soft soil, pipes in small diameters, long unsupported bedding are prone to form flexural plastic area. The results show that the pipes subjected to the same loads have smaller stresses in the elastoplastic analysis than elastic analysis. The difference, however, is slight.
Mechanical model and probability analysis of buried pipelines failure under uniform corrosion

Abstract:To resolve the failure problems for the buried oil and gas pipelines under the combined effect of soil corrosion and complex stress induced by external loads, a failure prediction model was developed by combining longitudinal and circumferential mechanical characteristics of pipes with the corrosion model. First order second moment (FOSM) was used to perform the probabilistic analysis, taking the uncertainty of the model and parameters into consideration. Then the sensitivity analysis of the important parameters such as inner pressure, residual stresses and corrosion parameters were given. Results showed that it was suitable to adopting the FOSM to calculate the failure probability, because the value by the FOSM agreed well with the one by the Monte-Carlo method (MC). The reliability decreased with the increased mean values and variances of the inner pressure and residual stresses. The residual stresses, which were released with corrosion, had smaller influence on the pipe failure in the late stage. The failure probability of pipes increased fast when used 10-20 years, but slowed down after then because of the self inhibition of corrosion process. The inner pressure, residual stresses, pipe thickness and corrosion parameters have large influence on the failure probability for the buried oil and gas pipes. The corrosion is one of the most important factors contributing to the pipe failure. Reducing corrosion pit depth growth by using the corrosion control technique can be the most effective way to decelerate the breakage growth rate and extend the service life.

Abstract:Pipe failure often occurs in water distribution networks (WDNs) and results in high levels of water loss and socio-economic damage. Physical-based, statistical and data-driven models have been developed to estimate pipe failure rates (failures per km of pipe per year) to efficiently manage water losses from WDNs and to ensure safe operations. Due to the complexities of pipe failure patterns, we develop a superposed statistical model to depict the relationship between pipe failure rate and pipe age. The model’s level of uncertainty was then quantified by simulating pipe failures as Poisson numbers. Part of Beijing’s WDN is taken as a study case, and pipe failure data for a 4-year period, as well as pipe properties, are collected to develop the pipe failure model. The case study results show that the pipe failure rates vary with time in a non-monotonic manner and that the proposed model captures pipe failure behaviour with an R2 value of 0.95. A 95% confidence interval of modelled pipe failures for each pipe age group is used to describe the uncertainty level of the model. We find that 88% of the observations fall under the 95% confidence interval. The established model could be applied to prioritize pipes with higher failure rates to optimize pipe replacement/rehabilitation strategies. Our uncertainty analysis of this model can help utility managers understand the model’s reliability and formulate reasonable WDN management plans.

Abstract:Underground water pipes deteriorate under the influence of various physical, mechanical, environmental, and social factors. Reliable pipe failure prediction is essential for a proactive management strategy of the water supply network (WSN), which is challenging for the conventional physics-based model. This study applied data-driven machine learning (ML) models to predict water pipe failures by leveraging the historical maintenance data heritage of a large water supply network. A multi-source data-aggregation framework was firstly established to integrate various contributing factors to underground pipe deterioration. The framework defined criteria for the integration of various data sources including the historical pipe break dataset, soil type dataset, topographical dataset, census dataset, and climate dataset. Based on the data, five ML algorithms, including LightGBM, Artificial Neural Network, Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Support Vector Classification are developed for pipe failure prediction. LightGBM was found to achieve the best performance. The relative importance of major contributing factors on the water pipe failures was analyzed. Interestingly, the socioeconomic factors of a community are found to affect the probability of pipe failures. This study indicates that data-driven analysis that integrates the Machine Learning (ML) techniques and the proposed data integration framework has the potential to support reliable decision-making in WSN management.

Abstract:Steel pipelines, whether buried in the ground or exposed to the atmosphere, are susceptible to corrosion, which may impact their structural integrity. Pipeline failures can be catastrophic, especially for pipelines that transport hazardous materials. Maintenance actions, however, are often deferred following detection of localized corrosion due to operational requirements and financial constraints. Consequently, pipeline owners are often confronted with decisions as to whether a corroded pipe is still fit for service with an acceptable reliability or what is the remaining service life of the pipe before it poses a serious threat to public safety. The methodology presented in this paper to predict remaining service life of pressurized steel pipelines can be used to support decisions related to continued safe pipe operation and optimal pipe inspection intervals and maintenance schedules.

Abstract:Drinking water pipe and waste water pipe networks are valuable urban infrastructure assets that are responsible for reliable water resource distributions and waste water collection. However, due to fast growing demand and aging assets, water utilities find it increasingly difficult to efficiently maintain their pipe networks. Pipe failures - drinking water pipe breaks and waste water pipe blockages - can cause significant economic and social costs, and hence have become the primary challenge to water utilities. Identifying key influential factors, e.g., pipes' physical attributes, environmental features, is critical for understanding pipe failure behaviours. The domain knowledge plays a significant role in this aspect. In this work, we propose a Bayesian nonparametric machine learning model with the support of domain knowledge for pipe failure prediction. It can forecast future high-risk pipes for physical condition assessment, thereby proactively preventing disastrous failures. Moreover, compared with traditional machine learning approaches, the proposed model considers domain expert knowledge and experience, which helps avoid the limit of traditional machine learning approaches - learning only from what it sees - and improves prediction performance.

Abstract:Abstract History of earthquake’s damages have illustrated the high vulnerability and risks associated with failure of water transfer and distribution systems. Adequate mitigation plans to reduce such seismic risks are required for sustainable development. The first step in developing a mitigation plan is prioritizing the limited available budget to address the most critical mitigation measures. This paper presents an optimization model that can be utilized for financial resource allocation towards earthquake risk mitigation measures for water pipelines. It presents a framework that can be used by decision-makers (authorities, stockholders, owners and contractors) to structure budget allocation strategy for seismic risk mitigation measures such as repair, retrofit, and/or replacement of steel and concrete pipelines. A stochastic model is presented to establish optimal mitigation measures based on minimizing repair and retrofit costs, post-earthquake replacement costs, and especially earthquake-induced large losses. To consider the earthquake induced loss on pipelines, the indirect loss due to water shortage and business interruption in the industries which needs water is also considered. The model is applied to a pilot area to demonstrate the practical application aspects of the proposed model. Pipeline exposure database, built environment occupancy type, pipeline vulnerability functions, and regional seismic hazard characteristics are used to calculate a probabilistic seismic risk for the pilot area. The Global Earthquake Model’s (GEM) OpenQuake software is used to run various seismic risk analysis. Event-based seismic hazard and risk analyses are used to develop the hazard curves and maps in terms of peak ground velocity (PGV) for the study area. The results of this study show the variation of seismic losses and mitigation costs for pipelines located within the study area based on their location and the types of repair. Performing seismic risk analysis analyses using the proposed model provides a valuable tool for determining the risk associated with a network of pipelines in a region, and the costs of repair based on acceptable risk level. It can be used for decision making and to establish type and budgets for most critical repairs for a specific region.

Abstract:<p>To reduce leakage and improve service levels, water companies are increasingly using statistical models of pipe failure using infrastructure, weather and environmental data. However, these models are often built by environmental data scientists with limited in-field experience of either fixing pipes or recording data about network failures. As infrastructure data can be inconsistent, incomplete and incorrect, this disconnect between model builders and field operatives can lead to logical errors in how datasets are interpreted and used to create predictive models. An improved understanding of pipe failure can facilitate improved selection of model inputs and the modelling approach. To enable data scientists to build more accurate predictive models of pipe failure, this paper summarises typical factors influencing failure for 5 common groups of materials for water pipes: 1) cast and spun iron, 2) ductile iron, 3) steel, 4) asbestos cement, 5) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and 6) polyethylene (PE) pipes. With an improved understanding of why and how pipes fail, data scientists can avoid misunderstanding and misusing infrastructure and environmental data, and build more accurate models of infrastructure failure.</p>

Double Circular Arc Model Based on Average Shear Stress Yield Criterion and Its Application in the Corroded Pipe Burst

Abstract:Corrosion is one of the major causes of damage in offshore and onshore pipes. Based on the double circular arc (DCA) model and the average shear stress yield (ASSY) criterion for isotropic hardening materials, a new burst pressure equation for corroded pipes is developed in this paper. The ASSY criterion is a weighted average of the maximum shear stress and the octahedral shear stress and it is adopted to predict the burst pressure of the pipelines with corrosion defects. The accuracy of our predictive equations is validated respectively by both the ideal and corroded pipes. Firstly, the burst pressure equation of a corroded pipe is degraded into an ideal pipe's. Then we compare the calculated results with the full-scale experimental data. The calculated results are consistent with the experimental data for the ideal pipes. Again, we make a comparison of the predicted burst pressures of corroded pipes with the ones from the elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) and the experiment. The calculated results show a good agreement with the numerical calculations and experimental data for the corroded pipes. Our research reveals that the corrosion defects can decrease the burst pressure for a pipe; the yield criterion and the strain hardening exponent are crucial to accurately capture the burst pressure. Our research is beneficial to evaluate the integrity of the corroded pipes.

Abstract:Purpose Owing to the consumption of considerable resources in developing physical pipe prediction models and the fact that the statistical models cannot fit the failure records perfectly, the purpose of this paper is to use data mining method to analyze and predict the risks of water pipe failure via considering attributes and location of pipes in historical failure records. One of the Automatized Machine Learning (AutoML) methods, tree-based pipeline optimization technique (TPOT) was used as the key data mining technique in this research. Design/methodology/approach By considering pipeline attributes, environmental factors and historical pipeline broke/breaks records, a water pipeline failure prediction method is proposed in this research. Regression analysis, genetic algorithm, machine learning, data mining approaches are used to analyze and predict the probability of pipeline failure. TPOT was used as the key data mining technique. A case study was carried out in a specific area in China to investigate the relationships between pipeline broke/breaks and relevant parameters, such as pipeline age, materials, diameter, pipeline density and so on. Findings By integrating the prediction models for individual pipelines and small research regions, a prediction model is developed to describe the probability of water pipe failures and validated by real data. A high fitting degree is achieved, which means a good potential of using the proposed method in reality as a guideline for identifying areas with high risks and taking proactive measures and optimizing the resources allocation for water supply companies. Originality/value Different models are developed to have better prediction on regional or individual pipeline. A comparison between the predicted values with real records has shown that a preliminary model has a good potential in predicting the future failure risks.
Towards Effective Prioritizing Water Pipe Replacement and Rehabilitation.

Abstract:Water pipe failures can not only have a great impact on people's daily life but also cause significant waste of water which is an essential and precious resource to human beings. As a result, preventative maintenance for water pipes, particularly in urban-scale networks, is of great importance for a sustainable society. To achieve effective replacement and rehabilitation, failure prediction aims to proactively find those 'most-likely-to-fail' pipes becomes vital and has been attracting more attention from both academia and industry, especially from the civil engineering field. This paper presents an already-deployed industrial computational system for pipe failure prediction. As an alternative to risk matrix methods often depending on ad-hoc domain heuristics, learning based methods are adopted using the attributes with respect to physical, environmental, operational conditions and etc. Further challenge arises in practice when lacking of profile attributes. A dive into the failure records shows that the failure event sequences typically exhibit temporal clustering patterns, which motivates us to use the stochastic process to tackle the failure prediction task. Specifically, the failure sequence is formulated as a self-exciting stochastic process which is, to our best knowledge, a novel formulation for pipe failure prediction. And we show that it outperforms a baseline assuming the failure risk grows linearly with aging. Broad new problems and research points for the machine learning community are also introduced for future work.

Abstract:In petrochemical plant, the in-operation repairing is usually a repairing strategy with pressured inoperation repairing for avoiding huge economic losses caused by unplanned shutdown when some slight local leakage happens in pipes. This paper studies the effects of repairing strategies on the failure probability of the pipe systems in process industries based on the time-average fault tree approach, especially the in-operation repairing strategies including pressured in-operation repairing activities. The fault tree model can predict the effect of different repairing plans on the pipe failure probability, which is significant to the optimization of the repairing plans. At first pipes are distinguished into four states in this model, i.e., successive state, flaw state, leakage state and failure state. Then the fault tree approach, which is usually applied in the studies of dynamic equipment, is adopted to model the pipe failure. Moreover, the effect of pressured in-operation repairing is also considered in the model. In addition, this paper proposes a series of time-average parameters of the fault tree model, all of which are used to calculate node parameters of the fault tree model. At last, a practical case is calculated based on the fault tree model in a repairing activity of pipe thinning.
Data Driven Water Pipe Failure Prediction: A Bayesian Nonparametric Approach.

Abstract:Water pipe failures can cause significant economic and social costs, hence have become the primary challenge to water utilities. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian nonparametric approach, namely the Dirichlet process mixture of hierarchical beta process model, for water pipe failure prediction. It can select high-risk pipes for physical condition assessment, thereby preventing disastrous failures proactively. The proposed method is adaptable to the diversity of failure patterns. Its model structure and complexity can automatically adjust according to observed data. Additionally, the sparse failure data problem that often occurs in real-world data is tackled by the proposed method via flexible pipe grouping and failure data sharing. An approximated yet computational efficient Metropolis-within-Gibbs sampling method is developed with the exploitation of the failure data sparsity for model parameter inference. The proposed method has been applied to a metropolitan water supply network. The details of the application context are also presented for demonstrating its real-life impact. The comparison experiments conducted on the metropolitan water pipe data show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art prediction methods, and it is capable of bringing enormous economic and social savings to water utilities.

Abstract:Polyethylene (PE) pipes are widely used for natural gas distribution due to their good durability and low costs. To ensure the integrity of PE pipelines, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive understanding of pipe failure mechanisms and to recognize the benefits and limitations of different pipeline monitoring strategies. This review provides an overview of different types of pipe failures in the context of their response to operational loads and material degradation. It also covers the details of mechanical tests for predicting the long-term performance of pipes, theoretical models for studying defect growth, examines different defect detection methods, and concludes with an assessment of pipe repair techniques. The findings highlight the importance of investigating the effects of existing defects on the operational performance of the pipeline. This indirectly emphasizes the need to develop time- and cost-efficient strategies to detect defects in the early stages. There is a clear gap in the inclusion of PE aging effects in the lifetime performance models. In addition, given the large number of inspection techniques, a regulated selection of pipeline inspection methods is highly desired, specific to the defect type. Further research in advancing adhesive-based repair of incipient defects is crucial to prevent catastrophic defect growth.
